  • Hello everyone! It's been a while since I’ve released a Suikoden video. Too long if you ask me. But with the upcoming release of both the Suikoden 1 and 2 Remaster, and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred heroes, what better time to release one, than now?
    This video is going to be a countdown, ranking all of the mainline Suikoden games from my least favorite, to my favorite. And just remember, this is just my list. I know there are many out there who will have different opinions, and I’d love to hear them, so let me know how you rank the series in the comments below.
    Also, who is looking forward to Eiyuden Chronicle Hundred Heroes? And also the Suikoden 1 and 2 Remaster? Can't wait!!!

    It's good to see someone really appreciate Suikoden 3. It's my second favorite Suikoden as well. I think the characters just have so many more moments in it. I am currently streaming it for a friend and we have been having a lot of fun with it.

    My ranking from worst to best would have to be *4, 1, 3, 5,* and finally *2.* I really can't wait for the remaster, Suikoden 2 has arguably the best plot of any game I've ever played, so being able to play it again with an actually _good_ translation this time sounds so awesome.

    I have to go with 2, 5, 1, 3 and 4 as my list. When it comes to 3 I like the little things about it, like how each character has small animations that give them their own character. Take Geddoe's group and how they all sit down differently when in a discussion. The big problem I have is that you have to walk through every single map every single time you want to go somewhere. Maybe if you got the Vikis sooner in the story or something it would've helped a bit. 4 and Tactics together does at least make for a full story, but it's kind of bad how little there is when it's on its own.

    I'm personally thrilled about the remasters and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes. It's like reliving the magic all over again while waiting for the new chapters to unfold. Can't wait to see where they rank on my list once they're out!
    Keep the Suikoden spirit alive! 🔥🎮

    Great to see some love for Suikoden 3! As the last one chronologically, it teased future events and really put an intriguing spin on the True Runes. Sadly, everything that came after was a prequel or spinoff that didn't really advance the greater story. And that's why, despite it being a technically solid game and story, even S5 didn't really float my boat (haha.) Nor would I necessarily applaud the transition to real time war battles. I kept dreaming of a real sequel and someday seeing a grand clash of all the True Runes and Runebearers, but alas that never happened. Perhaps Eiyuden will pull that off, but I'll be an old man by then!

    Fascinating with 3 being 2nd. I tried to play 3 about 4 years ago and it just wasn't doing much for me. The premise wasn't half bad, but the combat and progression felt unnaturally slow and I dropped it after about 5 hours
    I don't know if it's because I was spoiled by how fast 1 and 2 were, but seeing this ranking I should take time to give it another shot

      I strongly recommend it, it has personally been my favorite of the series since like 2003. It does start off a little slow but it picks up immensely as you progress. P.s. I strongly recommend making use of the skill tutor very early in the game. Mastering the skills can let you customize your party to an insane degree.

    2, 1, 5, 3, and 4. 5 and 3 are really close and 1 is so high up due to my love of the game. My only big problem with 4 is that the overworld map traversal is terribly slow, not only with combat frequency but movement. You made a good point about how a party of 4 makes it really hard to try a diverse amount of the large cast.

    when Suikoden 5 came up i got chills. There's something about the stories, Georg Prime at the center, and how it's a perfect swan song for the series.
    It's hard even to say worst, since its more like, which one am I more likely to replay. By replay value (least like to more likely to replay), I would vote: 4, 1, 3, 5, 2

  • @zulium

    I didn't like Suikoden 3 when it first came out because it felt so different. Changed the graphical style, the combat, the story telling (with the trinity system) and general feel of the series. It wasn't as "anime-y" as the other ones and felt more western inspired, which at the time, I was 100% into the anime-y aesthetic so I didn't really like it. But years laterwhen I went back and played it again, I really fell in love with everything about it. It feels more mature and tells a really interesting story with lots of twists and little details that can be easily missed if you're not paying attention. Honestly, it would be number 1 on my list if Suikoden 2 didn't exist because it's so great.
    My overall ranking would have to be 2, 3, 1, 5, and 4. 5 is great too, but something about the simplistic nature of 1 always wins me over. Plus the high up camera in 5 always bothered me. And the outfit for the main character is just atrocious imo. So lame looking. If he wore a Queen's Knight garb like does in the epilogue throughout the game then maybe I'd rank it higher lol.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Рік тому +3

      One of the things I love about 3 is how expressive the characters could be even with their polygons. The models weren't high detail but they had more than enough details to convey emotion and evocate movement really well. It helped sell them as distinct characters which a lot of polygonal models in games have a hard time doing. Also, there's just something about the various clans and how they're represented and the setting that jives so well together. It's one of the games that really feels like there's a bunch of different people living in a specific area, interacting with each other day to day.
      Just seeing NPCs and recruits pop up in other places and being able to track their movements over time adds so much to making that part of the world feel alive.

    • @missingLEGACY

      I respect the fact that you went back and gave 3 another shot, it totally deserves it. Way too many people are willing to die on the suikoden 3 sucks hill, and I hate it, because they keep spreading the word that it's a terrible game and so nobody gives it the time of day.

  • @fancywaffles
    @fancywaffles Рік тому +4

    Mine would probably be 2, 5, 1, 3, and 4 with 2 being the best. I really liked the story for 3, but the constant backtracking and going over the same areas is really frustrating sometimes. I would love, if the remaster of 1&2 does well, a remaster of 3, 4, and 5 with QoL improvements.

    2, 5, 3 = 1, 4
    2 is just my favourite game ever. I've played it about 20 times (not a joke, I went through a ...phase) and I will always love this game.
    5 is just a gem. Sure, it had a few issues with loading but the story telling, the characterisation... the setting. It's so great.
    3 I love so much. I put it above 1 just a little bit. The only real issue I have with it is the back and forth travelling, otherwise it'd rank 2nd.
    1 is the first I played but our disk was broken, but I love it.
    4... I like some of the characters, but it was just missing so much of the charm.

      I feel that is one of the best aspects of 3, you are able to see this huge conflict from multiple different perspectives. On your first play through, you can actually grow to hate some of the other main characters before you see the story from their point of view. I started as Hugo, I wanted Chris's head on a pike by the end of chapter one, but grew to understand her better after playing her part of the story.

      @grahf4215 Рік тому +3

      Yes you can. While the games are connected and all take place in the same world and sometimes with some characters and minor storylines being in multiple games, they're all stand alone games.
      They each take place in different regions of the world and at different points in time.
      The fourth game takes place 150 years before the first and is far to the South geographically in an archipelago. It's just South of the country to the South of the first game's country if that makes sense. So the islands in between the Northern continent where the first three games take place and the Southern continent where the fifth game takes place. This game will be the most secluded due to it being set so many years away from the rest. There will still be some things that connect and some characters that are shared. In particular they go into some detail of the backstory of a character that also appears in the first game here. This game also has a direct prequel/sidestory/sequel game that is actually translated called Suikoden Tactics. It follows another new protag and his small group but you will also recruit a bunch of characters from the fourth game. You really should play both games with S4 before Tactics in order to get the full story though. The second game also has some extra games associated with it but they haven't been officially translated.
      The fifth takes place 7 years before the first and takes place even more South than the fourth game. This game is geographically the furthest away from the rest and really only ties into the fourth game somewhat in that regard as the Island Nations are to the North but are also blocked off as the North end of the continent is extremely mountainous and so you only really visit one or two Islands for some minor stuff. There will be a good handful of characters in this one though that are from the first two games in the series. They ended up taking very minor background characters in those games and gave them quite a bit of backstory for their younger years. This game also provides a bunch of backstory for an ancient group of people that often spoken about in all the games but never seen as they're supposedly gone.
      The second game takes place one to two years after the first and is directly to the North/Northwest of the first game. The two areas were even at war during the events of the first game. These are the closest the games get to one another but they're still separate entries entirely. I actually played Suikoden 2 first and I thought the first game was going to be about a war that was often mentioned and seen in flashbacks but the first game wound up being something different entirely.
      The third game takes place 15 years after the second game and is again, to the Northwest of that area. So the first three games all take place on the same continent. Each game being to the Northwest of the previous. And all three having been at war with the previous game's country in the previous game in some way. This one also fleshes out the story of another country that's often spoken about in all the games but is rarely seen outside of their armies in the other games.
      There's plenty of Easter eggs involved if you go through them all, especially in numeric order but it's not necessary to do so. It's also fun to go through them chronologically too. It's similar to the Ys series in a way. Each one of those games can be played independently but are all part of a single narrative. It's just that with Suikoden, it's the world's narrative and not a single character's as it is with Ys and Adol being the protag of all the main entries.

      @@grahf4215 thank you very much.

    • @7thlittleleopard7
      @7thlittleleopard7 Рік тому +2

      @@grahf4215 Another thing to mention is that the first three games could have their save files interact with each other, at least in their original forms. The first game's save file would unlock stuff in the second game, and the second game's save file would unlock stuff in the the third game (if you had a save file that also had stuff unlocked from the first game, it would unlock more in the third game, too).
      It's optional stuff only but it was still fun to see - mostly books to read that detail the previous game's story, mentions using the names you used of the previous game's player-named aspects, some characters for the second game and theatre plays of the first two games for the third game.
      Also, while they're very separate story-wise from each game, there's a part of the third that doesn't make as much sense unless you've played at least one of the first two. (A certain character's whole shtick is made deeper if you had met them in the previous games, let's say.) You can certainly play the third first and by itself, but it's not quite as impactful as if you'd played the first and second.

    I've only played numbers 3, 4, and 5, so I can only give a "top 3 games ranked". I put Suikoden 4....... in 6th place. I never finished that one, mainly due to the frustration in not only the number of random encounters, but the intro cinematic to EVERY SINGLE random battle was a few seconds too long for my taste. If the number of encounters had been 1/2 or 1/3 as many, then this wouldn't be a gripe of mine. Don't think I even got to getting the home base set up, it was so frustrating. Then my top 2 would be Suikoden 5. I felt the story was quite good, the naval battles were a nice touch, and the characters were generally fleshed out well. My only nitpicks were (as you said) the beginning is rather slow, like a long tutorial, but I can forgive that. My other problem was the main character had no voice over lines in cutscenes, but all the other characters did. It made me fell like I was playing a mute character (who could still somehow converse without writing his responces down). And my #1 is obviously Suikoden 3. This was the first of the series I'd played (think I also played a couple of "Suikoden tactics" games, but they weren't very memorable), and I instantly fell in love with this game. I actually liked the trinity style of changing out the POV in game play. Sure, the first time I played all of Geddoe's lines before moving on to Hugo and Chris, which caused some confusion on my part, but I replayed that game so many times....... either making sure to get the chapter POV in the most understandable order, to having all 3 heros being the one to get the Flame Rune, even to trying to max out several of the characters (that time, I had Geddoe, Chris, and Hugo maxed at lvl 99 BEFORE finishing last chapters. And I agree: having the 6th POV from the antagonist view was very interesting. My favorite parts actually were the POV of Thomas! Seeing this least favorite son of some noble sent off on some trivial task (from his father's view), slowly gaining the trust and friendship of the castle denizens, learning to be more brave and self-confident, and pulling off some great guerrilla style fighting to defend the castle, yet still never losing his simple sense of kindness....... perfection! And watching the castle grow as more recruits get there was lovely. Even having to search the castle to find where some of them hang out! Even the POV of the dogs was just cute, including seeing how the recruited stars interact differently with the dogs than the main characters. I even got them to be pretty formidable fighters one time. And the oddball bits: the introduction of the detective, the theater shows, quirks of some of the Star characters, the bath scenes (even though it was just dialog), some of the locations like Duck village, Iksay village, and Alma Kinan gave a sense of "home" each in a different way than your main castle did. And there were some of the oddball background characters (that one knight in Brass Castle never got his pickles), all made for a truly wonderful and replayable game. Plus the soundtrack was outstanding, I have it downloaded and still enjoy it, even though I haven't played the game in years.

    My theory regarding Jeane being able to be in every game across the series is that she is the avatar of the true charm rune. In suikogaiden Viki visits the bath house with Jeane and mentions that Jeane doesn't bear the magic marks on her body suggesting possession of a rune or true rune, and also confirms it is the same Jeane she met in Suikoden 4. Along with this it has been shown that men who interact with her become bewitched by her presence, in 3 kidd even repeatedly fails to investigate her due to his head going blank while following her.

    As much as I love 2, I think I give my fav to 3, simply because the dynamic between the R and J in 2 just didn't feel natural. Won't give any spoilers away here, but I never could see what happened as actually happening outside of the idea that it was just fate... and I don't enjoy that kind of plot device in what otherwise is a deep and gripping story.

      Tactics kinda makes the characters from 4 better and less of a waste of awesome. Because 4 did have some awesome characters, and they did get some great scenes, just... unfortunate they got trapped in that game. Thankfully they got a second chance to shine more in 4.

I go to steam and I still have games from early 2000’s I can boot up mostly no issues lol. These games are very important to me, and should not just be lost to time. As the remakes like RE4 and so on have proven. These games need to be preserved and not just fade away when a single console era ends.

    3 is the toughest to rank for me. I really liked the skill development system, though it seems like there is a “best way” to develop almost every character, rather than giving you flexibility to customize them. Not having full control of your team due to the “pairs” battle, though you do get used to it, is just unnecessarily restrictive, which really stinks. And replaying it after the first playthrough highlights how agonizingly show it is.
    As for Jeane, I read a theory once that she is the physical embodiment of a true rune (likely the Charm Rune, though it is never explicitly stated that this is one of the 27). I can definitely get behind that explanation.

    Depends entirely on perspective. If you´re going by how playable thei are by todays standards, or the impact they had on you in the context of that era. The story of Suikoden 1 is in my opinion among the strongest ones emotionally, but one of the roughest to play through today - but that is easily fixed with the remake. Personally, I would rank the games from worst to best from my own experience playing them in the following fashion: 4, 3, 5, 2, 1. If i was going to go by which I would most likely play again today, it would be: 4, 3, 1, 2, 5.

    Mine will be 2 > 3 > 1 > 5 =4, I really wanted to like 5 as much as most fans, but wasnt for me, I thought the game was boring (something I dont like to say about games, but really fit the bill) the characters were forgettable and the civil war was not well estabilish, most because it didnt make me feel conected to any of the places that were involved, "City X was just engulfed in fire" and I was like "Oh okay....moving on..". Not to mentioned the combat, I tried really hard to pick what exactly turned me off, but the only big thing that stand out is how long is the loading times are and how the encounter rate is broken in some dungeons. In retrospective I think I had way more fun with 4

It seems to be most diehard's favorite due to how vast and rich the world is and hints at a lot more going on in the kingdom of Holy Harmonia that sadly was never explored.

    No one cares, but here’s my ranking:
    5. Suikoden IV - The Fog Ship quest and Snowe’s “homecoming” at Razril. These are the highlights of the game for me. Otherwise the bad outweighs the good.
    4. Suikoden III - I love love LOVE the lottery mini game and the theater mini game, but the game’s deceptive nonlinear storytelling is annoying. If you want the full story, you HAVE to play the chapters in a specific order.
    3. Suikoden I - The game that started it all, so obviously it’s great. But other games improved on the faults in this game.
    2. Suikoden V - GREAT storytelling, and I love the changes to the war battles and duels. Taking them from turn-base to real-time really reinvigorated both.
    1. Suikoden II - I spent over $100 getting this game so it’s going to be my number one, lol. But seriously, excellent storytelling and excellent characters both good and bad. Translation was spotty but that’s it.

    My list is:
    1. 5
    2. 2
    3. 3.
    4. 1
    5. 4
    And it's not even that the fourth game is a bad game. It's still better than the vast majority of RPGs out there. It's just that it's a bad Suikoden game. If a game as good as Suikoden 4 is your worst mainline game then you're doing something right.
    While it was great that Ted was in the game, I really was expecting Neclord, Windy, Yuber, Pesmerga and the Star Dragon Sword to also be in it in some way as they're all connected in one way or another. Windy is chasing Ted. Neclord and Yuber help her in her schemes from time to time. Pesmerga is chasing Yuber. The Star Dragon Sword is needed to "deal" with Neclord.
    In hindsight, they could also have put Zerase in as well since S4 set up quite a bit of stuff in S5 anyway and because Falena and the Island Nations have some shared history. Maybe even have had Killey, Lorelai, Nash and a few others too. They all had some teleportation "adventures" with at least one version of Viki in the Suikogaiden games. It would've been pretty cool if they tied a few of those things together in this one. It would've helped make it feel a bit more like a Suikoden game.

    1, 4, 3, 5, 2 (from worst to best). I just didn't feel the first at all. I think it was cause i played 2 before it and 1 just felt like a bad effort in comparison. I have 5 over 3 cause well despite it just being better technically, i was really disappointed by the twist of the flame champion. I was looking forward to playing that character. Nothing wrong with Hugo, i guess, but the flame champion looked so much more like what a suikoden protagonist should look like.
    Shutout to the intro animation of Suikoden 3 though. Absolutely one of the most beautiful things i have ever watched/heard. I guess as a Suiko 2 fan it hits harder.
