I learned in high school that if I wanted any meat I had to get a "men's" Bible and not to bother with one marketed to my gender.

It's worse than that...some of the women's Bibles have truly terrible stuff in them...much worse than the questionable stuff in the average general purpose study Bible, or frankly, in every study bible.

Well said! I completely agree. I personally ordered the He Reads Truth version as a reader Bible because it had more 'meat'. I have nothing against the other version, but I already own several devotionals and don't need that in a Bible. I prefer Study Bibles for the 'real' work. With those, you don't just get the meat. You get the whole buffet. 😊

Thanks so much for calling out the patronization of women. I've always been studious by nature, and I bring that to Biblical studies as well. And I also like devotionals if they are quality, and are about intimacy with God, not aimed at gender stereotypes. There's very few that I like, lol. I also totally understand that not everyone is super studious, and they have other gifts. A decent single column Bible with margin space is probably a great thing to be available. But in a Christian world where Bible study is exalted over everything else (even over treating others with basic decency, sadly), it's pretty telling that either fluffy or truly terrible offerings become bestsellers and hang around forever, while the really good meaty stuff seems to go quickly out of print.
You should totally review a "meatier" devotional Bible that's full color, handy size, not marketed to a single gender, has some cultural background material, and has devotional/application notes written by a woman. No wide margins though. I know that you are prejudiced against the NKJV, lol, but I think otherwise you might like it.
    Apply the Word study bible.

That's really sad that this is the case. Can you imagine Crossway doing a video with Jen Wilkin teaching women to not worry about exegesis or historical background, just about how did this passage, "Make you feel?" I am just using her as an illustration that women in the Evangelical community do actually study the Bible for a better theological understanding of the text so making a Woman's "study" Bible that completely avoids that approach seems very misguided and a little bit sexist.

The very fact that they felt the need for different Bibles for different genders was really a turn off for me, so I didn't even look at the He Reads Truth Bible. Also, I'm not the typical man who likes sports and does outdoorsy stuff and Bibles geared towards men are typically aimed at those sorts of men. Anyway, looks like I didn't miss much.

There's nothing wrong with a devotional, but both bibles are marketed as study bibles. I agree with the patronizing tone. As a woman, I want meat, not just fluffy, feel good stuff. There's a time for feelings, and a time for intellect. Unfortunately, meaty, intellectual theology materials don't seem to sell.

I am no longer interested in either one of those Bibles because of the review you gave them. I think I would go elsewhere. For example, I like the csb Chronological Bible, :which I've been using for about 4 years. But I'm thinking about going to the New Living Translation Chronological Bible. Do you have a review on chronological bibles? Either one of these the NLT or the csb?

Great point about how this Bible is completely lacking in devotionals for men -- I was so annoyed at the women's version lacking all the extra features the men's version had that I hadn't considered that the men's version had absolutely no devotionals at all: very odd choice considering the branding. Again this makes me think these two Bibles should've always been separate products as they're such mismatched "companions": taken as a set, they're needlessly and unintentionally insulting to both men and women.
I've often thought of purchasing a He Reads Bible (and adding an S to the title if I really felt the need) because I like it very much, but can't bring myself to financially support such a book. Maybe I'll find one while thrifting sometime. Or maybe they'll come out with a We Read Truth Bible. 😂

I agree! I usually dislike devotional segments within Bibles, but considering how these particular men's and women's Bibles were marketed, it's odd that there is so little overlap between the editions (that entire features are completely absent from an edition). If a husband and wife were to purchase these two Bibles and try to create a couple's Bible study for themselves with them, it would be apparent very quickly that the two editions are incredibly dissimilar.

JM once again you have hit it out of the park .This shows the weak point in some of the evangelical community that is stereotyping.of men and women and how they study the bible. As a teacher of the Bethal bible series I have found that men and women study best depending on their study style regardless of their sex.Bethal is a multi style Bible overview study in two years combining visual aids memorization and reading and studying specific sections of the bible.teaching biblical concepts and laying out the whole story of the bible in both the old and new testaments. And I find that men and women enjoy it equally.

    In sum:
    * She Reads Truth = a devotional Bible
    * He Reads Truth = closer to a study Bible
    * Regardless of whoever "reads truth", truth is truth, so one would hope both genders would like to know truth. Hence He Reads Truth would benefit a woman too.

I would take a "man's" Bible over a "women's" any day. I love the meat of God's word and the archeological context of the Bible, and find it helps me grow in my faith and knowledge of the truth of who God is. Unfortunately, I find most resources targeted to women are often flowery and lean toward a suprficial understanding of the Bible.
I was gifted the She Reads Truth Bible, and I like it for a reading Bible. It has lots of space for writing notes from your own study. I find texture and color of the pages and word font are easy on the eyes, making it a pleasant reading experience. I did notice my version of the She Reads Truth isn't as colorful as the one shown by the Discipleship Dojo. Mine is a little more like the mens version in that sense.

I’m loving your channel. I have a question..what would be a good counterpart to the “He reads truth” besides the “She reads truth”? I got my son the HRT last Christmas because it seemed like a good balance for him getting back into God’s Word without being overwhelming. Now his wife accepted Jesus (praise God) and she wants a Bible to read together along with him. I was going to order her the SRT because the reviews online are so high and every other video reviewer I’ve seen seemed to love it. Now I think it’s not the best choice. I know any CSB will have identical text but she wants Bibles they can sit and read together that are similar. I thought the SRT would be the obvious choice but clearly it’s not. I don’t think she wants a girlie dumbed down version of his Bible. 😬 She wants to learn too.

I was saved after meeting my believing husband. We studied together through a Devo, over the phone (we're so old). I have been teaching Bible to young people at church for about 30 years now. If they are reading together (side-by-side or discussing together) I would argue that having a different translation than him can actually be beneficial. The differences can color each other and help to flesh out the meaning and nuance in the text. If they made the ESV study Bible (or any really good study bible) with exactly the same content but used pretty colors to highlight text boxes etc, I’d throw my hard earned money at it so fast. 😂 I want to keep the meat and potatoes content but I wouldn’t hate it presented in a pretty way. That would be my ideal women’s Bible-not one that tries to give me whatever they think women want-which sometimes seems quite gimmicky. Sometimes women’s Bible’s or Christian books aimed at women even give off “new age vibes” because it’s all about your feelings instead of what God is saying. I’m here for God’s Word. I don’t ever want anecdotal stories from some contributor’s life on the pages of my Bible. I may be the odd one out but it doesn’t feel like it belongs there and is even disrespectful. Commentary or devotion that reflects scripture is one thing but I’m not reading the Bible to learn about what happened in the life of a contributor. That’s something that you see a lot in “women’s” Bibles. Put that in a separate book and I’ll respect it.
