      Suggestion for this channel: What would be the effect of rescaling some biblical durations by 25/40? The motivation is the observation that some numbers are symbolic such as "40 years" really meaning "a generation" (i.e about 25 years). For example, if you try to reconcile the timelines of Jacob and his son Joseph according to a literal reading of Genesis, it does not work. But if you rescale, then it does.
      P.S. H.H. Ben Sassoon, in his history of Israel points out how similar rescaling would work in the period of the Judges to reconcile the story of Jephthah ("300 years" after the conquest of the Amorite lands in Transjordan following the exodus) and the Temple dating from "480 years" after the exodus.

      I think there are a couple, one on how the NT books were selected (there is a decent Penguin edition of other early christian writings (NOT THE "Apocraphal New Testatment"- which is a muddle of oddments, nor Dead Sea Scrolls Book of Darkness and Light and similar , nor Ayrain view of Christ ), and one covering the Apocrypha - which is part covered here, being the - mainly Greek Jewish writings, which are useful for poetry , wisdom and history, other 2nd Temple writings appear lost, though there are allusions in NT of rabbi (oral?) considerations , mostly Hillai and Gamaiel which Matt has not covered, to my knowledge ( the point being that Jesus taught as one with authority , rather than making just a commentrary )

      I regret to inform you that it is mostly a matter of those works being fraudulently attributed to authors, containing contrary theology, and/or containing historical inaccuracies.
      I mean, by all means, please dig in. There's a lot of pop culture objections to the Canon because those works exist. It's just not all that amazing to me as a believer that the early church wouldn't have included them except as apocrypha. and then go on to affirm as much in councils to settle the matters publicly. But the more people who actually know the history of it all the better! Let us know what ya dig up!

      @@avr2fp4 Be careful. Apocrypha is mainly from the Jewish (non)acceptance of what was first probably written in Greek, the books and addendum to a couple of other bibilical books are accepted by the Roman Catholic (not certain about the Orthodox churches) and are as about reliable as history/interpretation and understanding of God as the rest of the OT and a little bit of them is quoted by NT writers. Apocryphal books/writings - a good few have been gathered up and published in english, dont have the beauty of Christ as seen in the NT, they are quoted (against general christian belief) by many Islamic writers but just dont ring true, even though the dating of some is very close to the time of Jesus, and some have African origins (dont forget Horn of Africa just a short boat ride from Arabia and other middle eastern views pre christian and not directly Jewish influence so one can see corruption via mis-transmission. These books dont seem to appear or be quoted in the Dead Sea Scrolls (probably as those predate the Apocraphal writings) , and the DSS manuscripts that dont appear in the NT or OT (mostly the battle of Darkness vs Light) at least give understanding of that community's thought and do make interesting reading in how communities from a Jewish Background saw religion developing in a Roman oppressive to people political landscape.

      @avr2fp4 2 роки тому +31

      @@highpath4776 As a devout Christian, I have to respectfully but strongly disagree that the apocryphal works carry equal theological or historical weight - this idea is almost exclusively embraced by the Romanist church (Roman 'Catholic') because it gave her leaders a way of justifying doctrines and practices which are otherwise foreign to an orthodox systematic theology. A good example would be paying penance (money for forgiveness) and another is purgatory (a lot to be said there). I grieve you are right on it impotent point, however: The apocryphal writings are a great literary resource for understanding the cultural character of the people from which it came. This might seem debated from a casual look on the outside of Christianity, but this is an oversimplification of the issue, often reserved for those too busy to study the theological nuances of Biblical theology. Perhaps I sound too sure of my stance, or even partisan about it, but I am in very good scholastic and academic company. Cheers 🍻

I’ve seen many of those “10 flaws in the Bible” videos, with a little bit of thinking and a quick google search most of it’s easily dismissed, the rest usually lies in historical context and original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. What do you recommend then for supporting material to study the Bible?

      @@EurekaYoga no problem, I was worried I came of snobbish or something haha. What’s helped me is a indulging in media (mostly videos as they keep me entertained) related to things like Christian commentary on Islam and other religion, Christian commentated history, secular commentated history in relation to Christianity, and as a (currently) non denominational I like to watch a lot about denominations as they each have slightly different interpretations of parts of the Bible but still a basic agreed groundwork of Christianity, this analysis of each denomination and their respective interpretations on certain passages helps me significantly with my understanding. And though I haven’t found a denomination yet, that too could possibly help a Christian study the Bible, with a more set perspective on things. Philosophy plays a role as well, I dabble in stoicism but it’s mostly just Christianity but as a philosophy. I’ve also heard great things about studying the literature and works of saints, especially early saints. The preacher Cliffe Knetchtle is really great and “Redeemed zoomer” has some interesting videos along with the UA-camr Kyle, who makes orthodox Christian content. Anyway, I’m still learning a ton, I love to see such enthusiasm about God, bless you and your journey with God!

      Well said indeed. A great amount of work was put into this presentation and what makes it even more special is a timeline to help guide us through this very rich and detailed information.
      What would be mind blowing is if we put this timeline of information up against all of the archeological discoveries that have been confirmed within those timelines. Most importantly the most recent archeological dig of King David and the Tel Dan Inscription.
      I am a firm believer that with proper access to very particular areas to establish biblical archeological digs would uncover a multitude of information that would clarify so much. The sad part is the particular areas needed to access for these important digs will not happen as they are under a different jurisdiction which would give a hard no for any exploration.

      The Gospel of Jesus was originally one book, written by Lazarus in consultation with the Apostles [John 21:24] and published soon after Jesus left them on their own. The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Later four of those adulterated gospels were canonized with falsely ascribed authorship and a Gnosticism cover-story. It was the finding of an original Gospel of Jesus scroll in Jerusalem that gained the Knights Templar power over the Church and their eventual undoing when the church finally retaliated against them.

    this series is incredible. with a clear narration and sleek graphs you make a really complicated topic accessible to ppl who don’t have the background to understand all the primary sources and the various theories around them plus their implications. it’s particularly interesting to hear it from someone who is neither christian or a culturally christian atheist. your transparency and your respect for material, factual history, as well as for faith, is as close to neutral as one can get when it comes to religious studies.
    I would love to see you dive deeper into the origins of Judaism, the two kingdoms with two origin story theory sounds really interesting and dare I say promising when it comes to the origins of the Israelites and Judaism in general.

      He was very clear about that thesis and the reasons why is it increasingly supported. I wouldn't mind a footnote to the archeology and historical studies that support this theory, but he did explain it in the video earlier on.
      Personally, I also find it very difficult to put any faith in the Torah's description of one kingdom splitting into two. After all, all the historical research is very clearly pointing to the early Jews simply being a group that emerged out of bronze age Canaan. That includes genomic research. When the bronze age collapse disrupted the region, the iron age gave up the division of Canaan into an array of small kingdoms. The Torah c I'm aims that the Jews slaughtered the Canaanites, but there's no evidence of that. It's way more likely that this story of a unified kingdom beung divided is a literary retelling of that history (the breakup of Canaan art the start of the iron age) probably passed down orally and modified through many retellings.

      I would say this video is very unhelpful for you, it does accurately give the modern liberal consesus on issues of authorship. But all of these have come with the pre assumption that God either doesn't exist, or is limp and can't do the stuff written in the book. For example. With the moses authorship of the pentateuch. They will start, "knowing" that Moses didn't exist, and therefore couldn't have written the pentateuch, so with that assumption other ideas abound to discuss it's authorship. (and can't be agreed upon!)

      @@seaman5705 An almighty God existing has a large amount of evidence. The universe's existence, the fine-tuning of the universe. Our appreciation of beauty, the general human conception of the spiritual. The vastness, complexity at both the large and minute scales, yet order at all levels. The understandability of physics. Human's many emotions and actions which go beyond evolutionary needs.
      Yahweh's existance: The cohesiveness of the bible. The fact that the largest religion in the world started from a poor dude getting killed. (and eye witness accounts that he rose from the dead- who were willing to be murdered for what they saw) the history of the Israelites, and the scriptures that have been meticulously preserved and passed on. The prophecies that have come true. (although every time there's one of these the liberals just assume it was written after the fact). Or even the surprise appearing of monotheism in Egyptian belief, just before the estimated time of Moses' life.
      Even if some are disputed, there is definitely a lot of evidence to discuss/look into. Modern people think they're so enlightened not to believe in God. and yet 2000/3000 years ago, people had the same brains we had. the same experiences of the world. Perhaps something mental did happen?

    • @seaman5705
      @seaman5705 Рік тому

      @@lierox9 Nothing form what you say prove the existence of a god . I would quote Stephen Hawking who said that the Universe was not created by God (and many other enlightened minds) and BigBang does not need a god to happen . This need of attributing creation to an almighty entity is because ordinary humans could not understand many things . Same brain , does not mean same knowledge . Not much happened to the brain since 2-3000 years , but some people refused to give up and "blame" a god for everything ( and knowledge accumulated) . Those were exceptions . 99% or more of humans could not understand the concept of gravity as space-time curvature - do you think they could understand the complex quantum mechanics involved in Universe ? No, the information did not exist by that time and the brains were not "prepared " to understand it .
      Second aspect is "bombardment" of every human mind with "god talk and threats" from the very beginning of it's existence , by the surrounding society, family and so on. The ones that escape this indoctrination might have a chance to study to understand irrelevance of a god .
      About almighty god - this god of yours could not convince almost half of humanity about him being "the only one" . And then there is Satan , who was invented to "excuse" all the "failures" of god .
      Also , keep in mind , never to bring Bible as an argument . We are combating here the shit written in the bible , which is taken for granted without any demonstration by people like you . Useless to talk about that Moses guy and receiving of "god's word" . It is just a religious metaphor copied from one religion to another , like many other aspects of religion , including the egyptian "one only god" .
      And about Christianity as the biggest religion - it's chance was Constantine (and Theodosius) and the power of Roman Empire at the moment . Without this factors , Christianity might have been a niche religion (like Judaism) or would have disappeared like Amenhotep's religion .

      It makes total sense in context, if you know Hebrew. The grammar makes it clear that the woman is already with child, which means that she's not a virgin. Also, Hebrew has another word for virgin but it is not used here. If the whole point is to make it clear that there will be a miraculous virgin birth, you'd they would have used that word, no?

      @@UsefulCharts oh that’s so cool! I can’t wait for it! Also, you mentioned in the Torah section that you consider the dual origins hypothesis to be the most probable. I was a bit confused while listening to that hypothesis though. It wasn’t anything you did; it was just my head lol. Does it basically say that the Abraham story and the Moses story were originally two competing origin stories for Israel? I know I read somewhere that prophets like Isaiah and Ezekiel mention that certain post exilic Jews had controversies over who owned the land of Judah because some say that Israel’s history began with the Exodus and Moses, while others said that it began with Abraham and the Patriarchs. Is this correct? Also, in the gospels section, you mentioned the Q+ Papias hypothesis. What do you think of The quote from Eusebius about Papias saying that Matthew and Mark both wrote a gospel? And he also associated Mark with the authority of Peter. Do you think this is further evidence that the gospels were written by a “school” of followers associated with the disciples (Matthew, John etc.)?

The religion was hijacked by Rome, the Gospel was broken up scrambled adulterated into a bunch of competing narratives. Very nicely done, and very fair to the material as well. It can interesting to approach the books of the Bible from a form-critical position. I've heard the theory that the Epistle to the Hebrews is actually somewhat older, and that references to Jesus were added later to 'baptize' it, so to speak. Martin Luther disliked it and considered removing it (along with James, Jude, and Revelation) from his cut of the New Testment (but ultimately did not). Imagine how different Protestantism would be today without Revelation!

    As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, one of the things we believe is that truths essential for salvation and exaltation were lost from the Bible, and that the Book of Mormon was needed to restore some of those truths. Having watched this video, and now having an understanding of where the books of Bible (likely) came from, I feel I have more of an understanding of how those truths could be lost. Many of the books we have aren’t primary sources, but quote older texts; most weren’t written by the people in the books themselves; and many were written years or hundreds of years later. Combine that with the Apocrypha and the New Testament Apocrypha, and it’s a wonder anyone with this historical literacy can seriously believe in a closed canon.
    Anyway, loved the video, thank you for sharing.

    When I was 16-18 I studied these OT and NT books for my Advanced Level Exams. This was in 1959-1962 My teacher Mr Cledwyn Jones taught us very much a similar explanation of the origins of these books. While this history may only be known to a few then it is now being exposed to many more folk. JEP and D were taught then though without modern refinement. What we young men were taught was that the Bible was a construct of various sources and the NT was NOT written by the disciples. Curious what is now pushed as new knowledge was kown to 16-18 year old schoolboys in Wales in the early 1960s.

      Notice how scholars (people in long robes) basically teach that the scriptures are lies and not what they claim to be. JEPD is a ridiculous theory that people who don’t understand the scriptures use to try and justify their lack of understanding, because it is only by God that you come to understanding. There are places where the theory breaks a single verse in to all four parts and does so after only one or two words. The JEPD theory makes no logical sense once you understand the purpose of the three patriarchs (Abram/Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob/Israel) and the Moses, Aaron, Joshua characters. Even the two Creation Stories make sense as a single writing when God gives you understanding.
      Does not the scriptures state God gives Understanding, God gives Wisdom, and God gives Knowledge?

How many churches provide actual academic history of this book? Many would rather their members rest on the supernatural theory. And God will open your eyes. I was blind but now I see!!

    The funny thing about other cultures influencing the Israelites; those that you either fail to realize or exclude tacitly, is that the Israelite culture could have easily influenced the other cultures they were subject to (or a part of). Therefore, just because the flood myth was propagated in Babylon doesn’t mean that it originated with them. Conversely, just because the Israelites had a flood myth doesn’t mean it was, at all, influenced by Mesopotamian myths. This logic can, and should, be applied to all other aspects of our understanding. I know it’s frustrating, because it means we know less than we think we do, but it is more accurate to think this way.
    I love your videos for the honesty and geniality you bring. Just so you know this is a friendly digareement and not an attack 😊
