- "Our infatuation with the Volvo XC90 luxury utility is well documented, having named it our drivers’ choice “best of the year” in 2016. Indeed, it was the most awarded car of last year. So, how does Volvo follow up such a grand slam? Well, with all-new flagship sedan, the S90. Let’s find out if the Swedes have now gone 2-for-2."

After a two week vacation in Rancho Mirage CA, sadly, I returned home and returned my 2017 Volvo S90 to SIXT rental car at LAX. After swearing to never own anything but a Subaru Outback, such as my 09 3.0R Limited......MotorWeek is right on the money, Swedish Delight. I was so impressed with the base S90 rental, I went last weekend and placed the order for my loaded V90 Cross Country. Whilst driving this S90 around the Palm Springs area for 12 days, yes drivers of the large German sedans asked very often, "How do you like it?"
Great review delivered with legendary polish!!
Still One Of The Best Looking Sedans Out!…💚
I really wish they didn't say that the engine is "Chinese sourced" because it just isn't
It is definitely pure Swedish in design and build. I am not sure why they said that.
he never said about the engine but the 8 speed transmission
Volvo has used Aisin transmissions for years. My 1994 940 has a Japanese made Aisin transmission in it.
Volvo is owned by a Chinese company now. My 850R is actually Scandinavian.
freddieman c Aisin is a Japanese transmission company, the engine is made in China.
The S90 is simply awesome in every way. A feast to my eyes!
the rear looks so nice... reminds me of the 90s
At least they didn't merge with GM. Look what happened to SAAB.
True, Ironically I feel the only thing that will save GM is Peugeot.
Not much really could've saved SAAB, to be honest. We need to remember that SAAB nearly went under twice before GM finally bought them out and thanks to their cred having been based around being different it never really stood much of a chance in a time when the automarket is so saturated with other models. Back in the 60's and 70's, SAAB had the odd car market locked up: with Citroen being the only other true odd car maker of the time SAAB's superior build quality allowed it to thrive. But, as the Japanese began to produce more upmarket products, their marketshare declined sharply and by the late 70's had to be bought out by Scania to avoid bankruptcy. They then were partly sold to GM to avoid it again as they couldn't afford to develop their own platforms anymore and even then, given how independent the company wanted to be couldn't make it. In trying to produce their own line of console controls and electronics they sucked up what should've been money for interior plastics and overall quality control. GM didn't consider SAAB much of an asset by the time the company went bankrupt as a whole as it never really had the appeal needed to keep it going. Volvo by contrast always enjoyed a far larger, more conventional marketshare and is why when it was sold by Ford at roughly the same time GM unloaded SAAB to the only player willing to take it on, Dutch odd ball car maker Spyker, Geely was more than willing to buy it. SAAB simply never had a chance beyond someone dumping far more cash than was sensible into it and firing the whole management team.
They forgot to mention the 4600 lb towing package that's available with the T6 (3700 lb for the T5). It would be supremely cool to see a sedan like that towing a boat or RV trailer or something. I feel it bumps up the overall usability of the vehicle.
thats some amazing fuel economy for the level of power.
Thank you for this review! It helped me make the decision and I just bought a loaded 2017 S90 T6 Inscription. I watch all of your weekly shows on PBS. Great job on this, and every car you guys review.
Volvo > Merceds?
I wish they offered bigger engines with it.
How much horse power and torque do you wish for? You can easily get more of both for at least $10 thousand more in German vehicles.
They need a NA V8 or supercharged V6 this I4 ish is shameful
I love how dramatic the editing is on these reviews. *Jet wooshing noises* "Government fuel economy ratings"
The company's main car production plants are located in sweden, belgium, and china, the engines are manufactured in Sweden and in china, and the body components in Sweden!
With a Japanese transmission.
a Super Turbocharged car? FUCKING AWESOME
Good power from a small engine, but since it's smaller, it has to work harder and will no doubt burn oil much sooner than a 6 or 8 would.
What does Chinese sourced engine mean ? Wtf ?
krazy bzs it means Volvo is building this is China at their new Chinese plant. They are owned by a Chinese company after all (geely)
That engine is built in Sweden.
Crazy, I saw the MW review of the 240 in the 80s and it was over 10 seconds for that and then they said it was sorry. This is half the time.
I find it perplexing how Volvo used to fit the older S80 with a 4.4L V8, now they won't even give you a 6 cylinder option lol.
The S80 got the V8 replaced before 2011 because the T6 was producing more power with better fuel economy.
The T6 was never rated at 311hp as the V8, it only made the same amount of torque. Of course I can't comment if someone would actually dyno the two cars side by side. But yea I imagine though the turbo would get better fuel economy.
I mean 11BHP is pretty close. Thought it was 306BHP so said it was the same, but there may have been later models with turning for 306BHP.
T6 AWD put out 300BHP according to Wikipedia.
That is why the current T6 4-cyl is called that, because 316BHP is pretty close to what the old T6 made.
I've read owners are having issues with the engine. A turbo and supercharger is pushing that four cylinder far too hard. Otherwise, it's a beautiful interior.
Steve Wise what type of issues?
Donte Lindsey I'd seen another review online, though I couldn't find it after you'd asked your question. I'll hunt around online when I have time and post a link.
Steve Wise okay thanks
Steve Wise where?
yamahaevo www.edmunds.com/volvo/xc90/2016/consumer-reviews/pg-1/
Engine has too much going on with four cylinders and a supercharger. Now, go out and read longer-term tests about the engine struggling to pull that huge car, not to mention the seats, although comfortable, are not holding up well even after six months.
How much do they pay him to crap the necessary brand for the camera?
👎 to the back end... front is more inspiring
Miguel Ircontar that seems to be the consensus, but I like that it is distinctive at least
jayfro83
Not exactly. The rear end is almost identical to the facelifted 1st gen Citroën C5.

It's a good car but i don't like the rear design one bit. I would still take the Lexus GS 450h presidential line, E class fully loaded, 5 series fully loaded to this without a doubt. I would even take the Jaguar Xf S as well over this, i like the interior excluding those ugly knobs in the center console.
Samson Okoro Of course more expensive cars will be nicer... The volvo doesn't cost anywhere near as much as a fully loaded 5 series or E class
That is a great looking car.
The XC90architecture is also used under fords Lincoln aviator Ford explorer and Taurus, unless you enjoy spending more $$$$$ than you would for a Lincoln, spending six figures for a glorified 4banger,I wouldn't spend that much loot on a Benz maybe an Audi A3/A4.
You're full of shit. This is a VOLVO made in SWEDEN. Clown ass.
Thumbs up for the car, thumbs down for Motorweek getting basic facts wrong. Engine, and car, is made in Sweden. Owner of the company (Mr Li Shufu) is Chinese.
HB45175 get your facts right. Having to correct everyone here. This S 90 is built in China. Simple Google search will prove it. They have a plant in china. The s90 is built in China among other models then exported. Production was shifted there last year; it was announced in 2016.
Your'e commenting on a two month old comment. And yes, S90 have rolled off the production line in Daqing since November, for China consumtion. The early export versions (like the car in the video) are (up until now in May) built in Sweden. I know, because I've seen these cars and read the tags showing where they are going. Now capacity is needed for XC60 (and the fact that nobody buys sedans here, it's only V90's everywhere) and all S90 production for all markets will shift to Daqing.
And Motorweeks comment that it's "China sourced" is just stupid. It's like saying an Iphone is "China sourced". Technically correct, but irrelevant to the conversation. A Iphone is designed and engineered in the US, a Volvo is designed and engineered in Sweden.
HB45175 so glad you needed paragraphs that I didn't read to explain. I wasn't aware it's unacceptable to comment on a 2 month old comment. If you don't want comments, don't post anything.
Ultimately, HB45175 is right, and you are uninformed about the true time line of the S90, and where the engine was built.
correction the 2017 S90 was built in Sweden. the 2018 forward are LV1 VINs... the 2017s are YV1 vins which are swedish built with Swedish designed and built engines.
Get the wagon love it
Pure beauty Volvo make something for 20 yr olds I can buy a s90 I drive a frs if you catch my drift
How much did they pay you to say that it was "more luxurious" than the 5-Series, E-Class, or the A6? That's a ridiculous statement. It's clearly about the same.
However you parse it, if you try to match, as closely as possible, feature for feature, the Volvo S90 is much less expensive to buy and own. You never pay for a map update/navigation either. And, cars that cost the most, depreciate the most.
cant wait for the T8
I have a 2016 Hyundai Sonata Plug-in Hybrid and was seriously considering the 2018 S90 T8 (to replace my VW Phaeton). After recently renting an S90 during a 9-day vacation, I felt the 2017 was as long as I wanted. So, instead of waiting and ordering a T8 exactly as I wanted, I settled for a T6 Inscription, properly loaded for $67,775. During the Memorial Day sales event, I scored a $10,000 discount on it. I don't get the extra 4.5 inches of leg room, nor the panoramic roof. Then again, I don't get the extra cost of it either. Look for tax credits/rebates/incentives to buy it from the Federal Govt, your state government, and possibly your electrical utility (I scored $4,919, $1,500, and $500 respectively) for my 2016 PHEV. And got a tax credit on the 240V charge plug I installed.
No thanks to any car with Chinese content.
I can see the gaps in the doors even from here. They probably couldn't install them correctly so they made the doors smaller.
Chinese not swedish
Lies
Chinese sourced engine? Can't say I'm impressed with that.
your iphone is made in china as well, how about that?
Assembled in China with parts from all over the world you mean.
The engine is NOT Chinese sourced.
Its Chinese sourced but retuned in Sweden by Volvo
Greetings from Sweden. The engine is developed in the city of Skövde, Sweden. Swedish engineering at its best. Please google "Volvo Skovde Powertrain" and chose pictures.
What ever you do , Don't buy Volvo.
This is an old say, I hope it's changed this day.
I had a Volvo and I absolutely loved it. I know other people who buy Volvos and nothing else. Not sure why people are skeptical of then.
Volvo make fantastic cars. Way better than american cars.
eh. dont know if i the rear lights
Was really starting to like this car (and the XC90) until I heard the phrase "Chinese sourced engine."
H. Ballard They all use engines designed and made in Sweden, not China. I have no idea where they got that from but it is untrue.
myvolvoforlife Hope that is the case. Very nice vehicles, but the prospect of a China sourced engine is troubling.
Its Chinese sourced but retuned in Sweden by Volvo
The cars are built and designed in Sweden, Gotheburg. I work with Volvo so i know. It´s chinese owners, but the cars are pretty pure Swedish all the way.
The Engines are pure Swedish, produced in Skövde.
WOW except for Chinese sourced motor
Its......not.......
Magnus Larsson whole car is built in China. Look it up
All S90s headed to the USA for 2017 model year were made in Sweden. All S90s headed to the USA for 2018 model year are being assembled in China.
chinese delight! - owned by and made in china? :D
V.C. It's not made in China....it's made in Sweden.
KentB27 no. It's actually made in China and exported. Look it up. That change was announced in November of last year
2017 made in Sweden, and 2018 (for USA) made in China.
You guys are stupid? They are still building Volvo cars in Sweden not China
It sounds like a weak vacuum cleaner.
$47,000 for a 4 cylinder fwd volvo, with 'safety' features that could kill you, and a boring driving experiance. this is how you know the automotive industry is in the toilet.
wow, you seriously know nothing about cars at all. the s90 is the safest car in the world, and there is nothing boring about it
LOL. While pretty for a Volvo, it's a turd. Bmw and Mercedes aren't even concerned.
A very beautiful, well put together, luxurious, quality, and safe "turd"... unlike the germs :)
Oh, and sells like butter:)
I assure you it's not selling like butter. Motorweek ooozes about the XC 90 in the beginning of the video. Guess what? It's one of the slowest and lowest volume vehicles sold. The same holds true for this car. www.google.com/amp/s/www.thelocal.se/20170204/volvo-accused-of-manipulating-sales-figures/amp
What is the importance of whether a car sells a lot (Camry) or a little (Rolls Royce)? If it is a great car for the money, and you can afford it, who cares if it does not sell like hot cakes. I like the exclusivity. I am in the process of buying a loaded S90 ($10K off MSRP). I own a 2004 VW Phaeton (for a few more weeks), that I will be soon parting with. It is amazing how many features of the S90 are in my Phaeton.
VW Phaeton... you definitely are into the exclusivity.
Chase, I bought it in 2011 from the original owner, with about 65K miles on the odometer, for $19,500. Or, less than a new Camry. Its new MSRP was just above $72K. I scored a real bargain. It now has 103K miles. Truly, I will hate to sell it.
