    Coppicing is the term for cutting willow back to encourage growth of straight shoots. Great video again 👍

    Few years back, the family went on camping trip to the Colorado River. Plenty of fishing and swimming. I got a hair up and wove a fish trap out of tall grass. It did catch lots of small fish. If it were a survival thing, we would have been good to go.
    The kids now want to make a woven crab trap and use it in the pacific on our annual California vacation.

      Its worth a try. When I was a small child I made my first pot using some bamboo, string and old pea net it looked impressive. Unfortunately it did not catch a lot apart from a few green crabs. However it was one of those happy memories that has stuck in my mind.

    As a retired Finnish carpenter, must say it's a thing of beauty. As my old Dad would say. I would score the wood working as two thumbs up and one missing finger 👍👍

    A few old people in our village still weave willow traps for eel fishing in our River Ems. A great craft! I hope that everything has remained intact with you during the storms last weekend! Greetings from East Frisia Germany!

    Like that, well done 👍 I shared before in Facebook but just got round to watching it, very cool. I’m far from expert but I heard that the scent of the willow attracts crayfish….. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ so interesting if you do catch them. Looked well solid, good luck 💪💪👊👊

    Hi Troy, another enjoyable video. When I used to use willow pots, some 40 years ago, I would soak the pots for two or three days on a neap tide before baiting them and moving to the fishing area. It was not unusual to find one or two lobsters and a rockfish or two in the unbaited pots and as the pots had willow bases they would catch lots of lady crabs, but at the time nobody wanted them. Good luck and stay safe.

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 роки тому +1

      I will probably add a couple of rocks to the pots first day or two just to soak. It would be great if they could catch lobster without baiting all the time that would solve bait problems :)

      @@Trojwaterman I think it's because they are so dark inside that the lobsters think it's a nice place to live?

    Hi Troy 😁 studying your attempt to make a wicker pot it looks brilliant but the ends of the willow seem as if they need whipping to stop them moving and sliding off the hoop at the ends , just an observation mate

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 роки тому

      all the loops have been braced to each other to prevent that. We did think of whipping the ends and may add extra reinforcement before we drop it in the water I will look at it again once its dried.

    Hello watching this video reminded me of my long passed Granada in jersey he use to make his own baskets , I remember him using them when he used to set his trotts/longlines on the big springs , he used to take me when I was only a nipper to collect and re bait . Do you set trotts or is it not allowed any more ?

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 роки тому +1

      I used to set some 8 hook lines from the shore for bass but I don't anymore, you still can in the winter I believe but there are so many people dogs and horses on the beaches these days its just not worth it. I also have a few in the shed for the boat only with about 20 hooks on each , I may drop them from the boat sometime when the conditions are right.

    Looking forward to the launch....or sinking........ ceremony and how it performs.
    Do fishermen have any traditions or superstitions to bring them good luck before using new gear? Traditional wooden boat builders had/have their idiosyncrasies.

      The only two I know of is its bad luck to paint the boat green or change a boats name.

    Why not drill holes in the wooden base and slot willow into holes

    • @Trojwaterman
      @Trojwaterman  2 роки тому

      I did think about it but it weakens the base especially when the marine worms start to eat into the wood base, also screws on the ends would get in the way and a few other minor reasons.
