Chord Progression Gold Mine!

- You’ve heard me use this progression many times, but I keep going back to it because there is so much great stuff in it.
It’s a simple progression, but has a few things that are so much fun and I think will help you visualize and hear some things that will really open up the fretboard and your ear.
E / Ab7 / C#- / E7 / A / B7

Guthrie Trapp
if you can't hang dont watch...and for sure dont post shitty comments about his teaching style. Dude is a pro and just on another level than 99% of players out there. Guthrie thanks for putting this stuff out there - love it.
Nobody has to listen to you
Idiot doing Idiot stuff. Losers always love to troll great content...
Right , I just love it when someone I’ve never met wants to tell me what to do . How about you do what you want to and everybody else can do whatever they want to ? Just a crazy thought .
Doing great! Nobody quite like this on YT. Grow this channel & us with it.
Guthrie, thank you for your generosity, sincerity, humility, and passion for just playing good music. I know you have so much going on and so am always grateful that you take the time to sit down with us and share your brilliance. Thanks, man!
Thanks a bunch, man! Means a lot to me. It’s helping me learn and how to explain and communicate these concepts also.
Took Guthrie’s course on Artistworks, for a year, and learned ALOT. The major sticking point for me is I need to learn the caged system, after that, will be signing up for another year.
There is more info/knowledge in this video that in whole other UA-cam channels straight
Just in case anyone is wondering, a secondary dominant is a dominant chord of the next chord. Ab7 is the dominant chord in Cm. It sounds good because the dominant chord (the V chord) always leads your ear back to the I chord.
Another example is E7 to A. In the key of A, E7 is the dominant, or the V chord. You can do this for any chord, just insert the V of the next chord you’re going to play before it and you’re in business.
Thanks you, I know you meant Ab7 is the dominant chord in C#m*
@@Channel-io1diYes, you’re right! My mistake.
really awesome concept - why everyone love the hook in Santeria
I have been avidly following GT since the first Brett Papa video that I was introduced to him, and it took me a year or two to realize that if I want to understand his improv, I had to learn what he said to learn....knowing the chord shapes of CAGED is only the basic foundation, you have to dive into the arpeggios found in the shape, triads/pentatonics/major scale....but if you havent really studied triads and the major scale the way you should alot of info will fly over your head. Once you dive into those topics as well as relative minors....it all starts to make sense, It just doesnt happen all at once from a free video or three....I would love to afford some one on ones with Guthrie, but im good at taking what I get and knowing what I need to learn, and I use GT videos to that extent....and now im still just intermediate, because the more you learn, the more you realize you dont know.
Guthrie has taught me so much in the last 4 or so years, and I havent been able to pay for it, but hopefully I will some day
Thanks a bunch, man. Keep it up! It works 👍
I relate to being with good folks. No bullshit served here.
Never! 👍
Hey everyone, if you’re into this then I highly recommend checking out Guthries more personalized lessons. I had a one on one Zoom meeting with him in December 2022 and it’s amazing how much he can pack into an hour. You get the recorded lesson to reference from for ever. Do yourself a favor!✌️
Kris
Thanks a bunch for sharing that!
Simple guitar math - the secondary dominant is a dominant chord build off the fifth of whatever chord you want to lead to.
That c shape triad explanation just blew my tiny mind
Free for the taking! Thank you!
Solid gold ❤🙏
Sweet thanks 😎☮️
I greatly appreciate all your content, Guthrie. One thing I think never gets stressed enough for all of us watching these videos is the very simple fact that you need to spend a LOT of time with your guitar if you really want to improve. Most of us are busy with families and just trying to get by in this cruel world, but a person just has to carve out the time and commit to it. I’m trying to put that into practice in this new year. Say “hi” to Billy!😎
That’s exactly right. Thanks man
Frank Vignola has TrueFire lessons showing how to do comping rhythms on just the 3rd and 4th strings with complex chords changing a lot. Remarkable how much the ear hears the chords change with only two notes. Guthrie is showing a variation on this.
Guthrie dropping more guitar gold. If you want a deeper dive get the Artist Works course!
Great progression❤ like Jimi Hendrix, Little Wing❤ I call this one Guthrie Trapp[ big chicken wing]
Coffee is supposed to taste better cold. 🤔
Oh, you're a bloody good player by the way. Class.
Froggin A! Thanks
Hey mate, for a second I thought you were gonna take me to the dock of the bay...
(Thanx for a nifty prog)
Cheerios
Your iPhone records guitar sound extremely well. Good stuff.
This past week I've been playing the triads in the key of D below around
the 5th fret. Each set of three strings has three different triad shapes,
so I'm kinda getting D and E with one shape, F# and G with another and
and A and B with the third, C# with whichever one is handy, then moving
on to the next set of three strings and so on, deriving the shapes as I go
and accounting for minor and diminished. Sounds tedious to write out,
but has been great fun, and watching Guthrie's videos is what makes me
think of doing stuff like that when I'm noodling.
Now, seeing this video, and seeing how he's doing the same thing
with the chords from his progression is very interesting. My buddy
Kent and I used to play "Blues for Dixie" (chords on the Internet),
and its progressions are a lot like the one Guthrie is using here.
I'm motivated to go figure out how to play Blues for Dixie all
over the neck using triads... thanks for another blast of inspiration
Guthrie!
That’s the way to do it!!
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold...and I'm getting old. Cheers Guthrie!
It's basically the same progression as bell bottom blues. Starts out sweet then turns immediately Moody. 1-3(dom7)-6-4 etc. Magical
I heard Guthrie demonstrate that same progression a while back when Brett Papa interviewed him. Been practicing and playing it ever since. It is indeed a gold mine.
Great exercise. Thanks Guthrie.
I think the simple set up with less editing is actually better for us as viewers, because the easier it is to put stuff out the more stuff gets put out, and the more stuff that gets put out the more I learn. Thanks as always
Totally agree!
I would love to have been in the room when Guthrie was a beginner/intermediate player and decided to start memorizing all these triads and linked scales up and down the neck. What was that feeling like - that decision? This is a task! And I'm a pianist who can read notation and knows theory. The fretboard is like pawing around in the dark, to me.
That was at a time when there was much less noise in the world. I was in a sleepy little town on the Gulf Coast, surrounded by music and had time to work all this stuff out when I was a young teenager. But trust me that it works!
Welcome back! Glad you had some time off
Gigantic thanks Sir!
So incredible
Sounds great
Again GT makes it look so easy. Almost effortless. Goldmine.
Love these lessons
So much ear training in this.
Simply mesmerising 😊
Such gold.. have this on loop and seeing progress each day. Thanks GT!
Super helpful content. Thanks
I love everything about the way you explain this stuff … happy new year to you all … gold again Guthrie… all the best to you in the new year ❤
Great stuff and your guitar sounds great. Cheers, James.
Killer lesson Guthrie!!
Thank you!🍻
One thing I learn from GT's videos is patience. Sometimes I think I should watch a 25 minute video with a lot of information and grasp it and apply it immediately. This is funny since I've been playing 35 years and it has taken 20,000 hours to get where I am today as a player. My advice is take a 5 minute "chunk" of material and focus on it for 20 minutes. Then move on to something else like learning a song you've wanted to learn. I've found if I spend too long on one thing I get distracted, bored, and I don't retain what I've learned. Thanks Guthrie. I'm a better player today because of your UA-cam stuff and the 2 courses I've purchased.
Oh, and it is ok to give a "teaser" on UA-cam for free in hopes of selling your videos. I've learned to eat 3 squares a day and like to get paid for my work too.
Thinks G for all that good staff
2 videos in 1 day woot!
If I had one video to take to a deserted island, it'd be this one.
Best lesson ever!
Great changes! Rock on Guthrie 🤟🤟
"I'm Just An Old Chunk of Coal"
What a great exercises. So fun to play. The progression never gets boring when you have so many ways to play it.
Your lessons are so inspiring!! I can't wait to grab my guitar and jump in!! Thanks again!!
Cheers Guthrie, so much to work through here. Great great insights and as you unpack each one, you get the - ‘now I get that’ feeling.
Good stuff Guthrie. Can't wait to re watch it with a guitar in my hands!
Love, love, love you! You are so talented and generous with sharing your knowledge. Thank you.
Good man 👍🏿
Great mini lesson. Your ear and improvisation is off the charts!
Great lesson bud
Love your content brother
Great lesson Guthrie you teach us how it's our job to practice
Been watching mr. Trap since since he went on with Brett papa/ Marty , he is usually way to advanced for myself, but this video breaks it down like no other , when of his best instructional vids, although just sitting back and watching him noodle is awesome too!!!
You’re the man, Guthrie, many thanks for sharing all this great stuff 🤠⚡️🎸🙏
You are the best
Damn. Thats called fretboard fluency.
Can't wait for the record release of the album with Tom Bucovac! when is that coming out ? Is there going to be a tour with the release? Thanks G man , Love everything you do!
Very soon!!
My favorite part of the day, hearing you noodle
Guthrie Guthrie the whole day through.. Just some sweet sweet chords keep Guthrie on my mind.. Amazing stuff!
I have to say your play on the piece made me imagine Andres Segovia rolling in his grave wanting to jump out of there and dance. You speak at least to me, with a big YES. Inner confirmation of truth.. I will be following you. I sorta found you thru Lance Lopez. We have a history and he is a good guy truth teller also.
I wish continued success.
This lesson is guitar gold!!! Thank you sir for what you do.
There is so much good stuff packed in this video it's crazy! I've been working through it for hours now and the lights are starting to turn on for me. I'd consider myself an intermediate player and this came along at the perfect time. It's like ten lessons wrapped into one and it's so much easier to take it all in when it's presented in such a musical context. Thanks for taking the time to do this Guthrie. I'll be working on this one for weeks!!
Such a wonderful lesson! So clear. I finally understand what secondary dominant means and how applied. Great service to all of us guitar learners.
Guthrie over here just giving it all away. So much amazing information in every one of his videos.
Thanks.
Great lesson! 👍🍷
Glad you liked it!
Man… I am so grateful that you take the time to share and show us stuff. I have learned so many useful things. Endless…Thank U’s 😊
I love this progression. I play it all the time .must have learned it from you awhile ago, lol.but it is great, to practice improvising over.
Already commented on this one but I have to post another. I’ve been playing with this chord progression as GT suggested and (a) have been having a blast and (b) it’s opened up something about my soloing that I’ve never experienced. Guthrie, you’re so generous with your lessons and your passion for the joy of the music is so contagious!
Ahhh...my lunch hour is always better with you man... you are phenomenal!
Yes, complexly is a good conjugation of the word complex in this case.
Great lesson as always Guth!
I ❤❤❤ to sound of trains. I miss TN time. I hang on Lookout Mountain
oooo nice close groupings love that! It takes a while for this stuff to stick but it really helps - stick with it. Thanks GT this has been a massive help to my playing. Get your trio over to the UK!!!😍
the Ab was almost the same sound as the train horn, you are a hoot man, thanks for the lesson
Hey Guthrie don't change a thing. You're a great human being and I love getting caught up on your life. Most of us get it. If you want to learn the details sign up for some lessons. Keep the faith and don't stop doing what you do.
I Agree! Keep it up. You’re a generous soul for what you give us on this channel. For anyone who wants to critique your teaching style, I also recommend that they should sign up for your lessons. The only price you pay for these videos is the time you invest. Keep the faith, GT!!
I appreciate that
Guthrie…you are a gold mine! I enjoyed your previous lesson on this progression but this takes it to another level. Thanks for making us all better guitar players!!! -Rich
Thanks for the great content!!!
Glad you enjoy it!
Noodling is essential for exploration of what is possible, training your ear, dialing in your tone, touch, gear, and combining what you already know, with what you’re learning/practicing. Noodle on GT! If you want less noodling, buy a course. Worth every penny and a bag of chips! Appreciate you GT! Happy new year everyone!
To be clear, I’m speaking about my own noodling and how I find it useful
Thanks for understanding how this works!
Your amazing guthrie just playing in a other level i learn so much thanks greatings from Thailand rock band blasting in club next door. Sitting in a small room Practicing
great post Man. i never understood the Ab7 in this progression, but its just setting up the minor 6. awesome
Try dog tag cafe coffee. Best coffee I’ve had. A veteran here in West Virginia makes it. 😊
Your perspective is always interesting. Thanks again Guthrie. Much respect...
Much appreciated
This is just awesome and clearly explained. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I know I commented yesterday, but this is one of the best lessons on playing the guitar that I have come across that is currently on the internet. Call me a fool, but it's true.
Wow, thank you!
Another fantastic lesson. Thank you for being so generous.
My pleasure!
Love these nuggets of guitar knowledge. I love the flow, and easy going vibe, really works for me
Glad to hear it!
Great lesson Guthrie! I have to slow down your videos sometimes to capture all the gold but you are providing the decoder ring for leads. I wish I had seen these videos 20 years ago!
Glad to help!
I talked to you before a concert with John Oats in Texas. We would love to hear you again in Nashville in April or May. Where can we hear you? Best wishes 2024.
Great lesson and demonstration on what's inside this progression Guthrie, thanks a bunch!!
Glad it was helpful!
I have the time to pratice these concepts so that’s what going to do!! Been playing for 27 years but want to prove to myself that an old dog can learn new tricks
Thank you Guthrie for your insight and inspirational playing
Cool dude. Subbed. I have been teaching guitar going on 34 years. The thing I most often say to my students is 'it's all the same thing' and you will be thankful once you get it. 6:00
