Mark Hollis and Talk Talk where never given the credit their talent and progressive / forward thinking / vision deserved. Mark Hollis was an absolute genius in my estimation; and a poetic wordsmith in his lyrics and songwriting. Listening today as much as yesterday his voice and their music still thrills my soul. You can't help yourself by not being entranced by listening to " I don't believe in you ". Mark is still; and will always be very much missed; and very much loved also. Rip fella ! xo
My first time watching this interview, and I can see they are uncomfortable with it , they are proper gentle London boys as I am I think they have a north London accent, we don’t produce talent like these anymore, such a shame. I named my daughter after a song of there’s . Rip mark thank you for the spirit.
A deeply thoughtful, fully engaged Mark Hollis. A very rare exchange about his brother Ed, who would become hopelessly addicted to heroin & die a few years later. Mark became far more reticent to talk to the music press in later years & only wanted to make his music....& what a fine body of work he left. Much missed!
Incredible, and so rare to see interviews with the group at its inception. Mark was still "talkative" at the time, so young and already so charismatic and hypnotic. His unique voice is totally captivating whether he speaks or sings. What marvels of sharing, I have tears in my eyes. Thank you so much. Wonderful Mark ... he is missing so much. In my heart for ever .... 💔❤
U would never believe the Mark talking could be the same person singing ..his accent was nothing like i expected at all Such Magnificent vocals !!!!!!!!!!! Not to mention the amazing song writing
I miss this guy so much. I don’t know who loaded this interview that came out of no where but thank u for bringing it on UA-cam. I don’t even know what the lead singers name is but his super cute face and hypnotizing music will live in my heart forever. He made 3 songs that should be at the top out of many other all star hits.
The only time I saw Talk Talk was on this tour, opening for Elvis Costello (Gainesville, FL for me.) I'd never heard a minute of TT music. The next day I bought THE PARTY'S OVER. I still love this band.
One of my favourite songs of all time is Life What You Make It. That guitar riff got me hooked instantly. It's a song that is like no other. It comes from a different place, another world almost.
So incredible and rare to see interview footage from the start. He’s young and he is absolutely adorable. His piercing gaze just holds you spellbound. I know he hated doing interviews and reviewers gave them nothing but grief, still the pessimistic fucks that slagged them off couldn’t take the shine off them. Him cheekily slagging DM is funny. I cannot believe he left us 3 years ago and it’s so unfair. I mourn him the way I mourn Alan Wilder. Underrated geniuses who were under appreciated.
Damn..Mark looks so much like Tim Roth (actor) here....anywho...LOVE THIS BAND...just discovered them last week...now i'm hooked. I love every album they put out and they're all so different from each other...do you know how fucking hard it is for a band to change their sound every album and still maintain quality....most bands..even legendary ones fail...Talk Talk just got better and better.....Dance, New Wave, Adult Contemporary, Modern Classical, Avant- Pop, Soft ballads....they did pretty much everything right...much love from Seattle...RIP MARK HOLLIS
interview reveals a natural humility, and intelligence, a thoughtful person, both of them, who care about quality, and have studied how to make it happen.
It's funny, last night the guitar lick to Life's what you make it popped into my head, I always loved that song but never knew who was responsible for it, and I've since embarked on a talk talk, Mark Hollis binge lol, it's funny but his talking voice is exactly how I imagined it to be, uncanny, I just knew it was London, South by the sounds of it, seemed like a lovely person, reminds me a bit of Tim Roth
That's a bit strange... that you expected his speaking voice to be the way it was after hearing his records. His singing voice used an American accent. His natural speaking voice is totally London English. Totally different!
I have been a fan of this band for many years. Some of their tracks are sonically and musically brilliant. Listen to "Give it Up" on a great sound system and keep your ears tuned to the guitarist. Powerful stuff. Listen to the rhythm track of "Life's What You Make It". Get stoned and listen to "Desire" or "Living in Another World".. this is a band whose music sounds as relevant in a world reeling from a pandemic and economic chaos as it did in the '80s and '90s.
Wow... I did not that about his brother... Only that he was a DJ and helped Mark in the beginning of his carrier... It makes me so sad... now both of them are gone...
This interview demonstrates the intelligence and leadership of Mark Hollis as, at a very young age, he demonstrates a clear vision of what he wants his band to do as opposed to lesser bands that simply jumped on the MTV bandwagon and did well because they looked pretty. Sadly, you rarely hear Talk mention when radio or TV shows put on 1980s retrospective shows. While I admire the longevity of bands like Duran Duran they were never in the same League as Talk Talk. Gwen Stefani did a great cover of "It's my life" probably their greatest commercial success. However, if you listen to the track "Time is Time", from "The colour of Spring£ you will recognise the musical genius of Mark Hollis; legendary vocalist and songwriter. RIP.
If you didn't smock in those days you just sat there and breathed it in, now it's a another story, anyway these blokes were very individual and talented, did their own thing
This was mid August-September 1982 I’m putting them in Ohio or Pennsylvania when they talk about it being bad down there. I’m thinking he means to tour the area.
:56, Funny how it takes him forever to ask a question, it’s what it’s like when your mind is going all over the place and you make an attempt at normalcy.
If you notice members of successful bands are always well connected from a very early age which they tend to downplay, they also appear to be not 'right', they are almost robotic-make no mistake the entertainment industry is elite controlled from top to bottom.
Thinking about Naked Eyes and how they never performed live because they couldn't recreate their album sound on stage... that's doesn't diminish Byrne's vocal ability or Fisher's masterful composition!
I’m going down a rabbit hole of Talk Talk interviews and live performances. It’s marvellous.
Same 😂
Me too 🙂
They were so underrated.
Yep😢

Maybe because he never gave in to the system. He did it his way and that's why their music is cult status living on forever!❤
Gentle London boys from "Hackney"? Are you kidding? Paul and the drummer being from Essex. Neither were middle class areas.
Love his voice, his eyes, his style. The Best and smart band with clever songs from heart...
Yes I Agree .
@Lisa Surlie sure, he wrote all his songs
Yes mate 👍
Idem for me !
Such a gorgeous smile.

Mark is the most English man I have seen lol
Mark Hollis the nicest popstar ever ❤
Which Song?
Just watching Mark sing live it is beyond superb!!! Their songs are moments of magic in your life!
One of the most underrated bands of all time.
The most beautifull and clever band Talk Talk 💕
Fajnie ze masz taka wrażliwość
Mark and this band.......pure brilliance.
They are so down to earth like listening to your brothers talking or friends so sincere and polite as well.
This footage is incredible, thank you. Interview footage with the band is like gold dust. Love Talk Talk and still missing you, Mark.
Rip to a man who had a vision of a greater field of music.

Yes. What a band. So sad he is gone. Sad for his kids.
🥰🥰
@Lisa Surlie Happy Xmas, Lisa. What on earth made you post that on this of all mornings?
he was very talkative in 1998 too (when I interviewed him)
Real and talented musicians, able to write evergreens.
I miss these times, I miss these guys!

When asked about Elvis, Mark Hollis says, “we’ve met him, but we’d never admit it!”, what a great sense of humour he actually had!.
They were so pioneering, musically and with regards to their visuals. I LOVE this band.
What a gem! The intelligence shines through. Thanks for posting.

Alan Wilder of DM fame, who’s still very much alive?

I stopped listening to Depeche Mode when Wilder left.

Paul Weller managed the transition to different types of music very well too.
Pure genius - Mark Hollis was ahead of his time
interview reveals a natural humility, and intelligence, a thoughtful person, both of them, who care about quality, and have studied how to make it happen.
Unlike todays lot who are only obsessed with fame and vulgarity
He was so adorable💖
He is. He really is.
Agreed ❤
His voice, his personality! Amazing!
TALK TALK love them and what a gift to the world RIP Mark
Fabulous underrated band… Marks voice was amazing ❤️
1st interview with Mark Hollis I've seen. He looked very awkward at first but warmed to it. Seems a very genuine bloke. Not surprised at all
40 years ago already, isn't it. Wow, where did time go.
I Love all of Talk Talk Music ,There music is Timeless . Mark would be 65 years old now had he not died last year.
I played Talk Talk constantly... like a soundtrack to the 80s!
Love Mark his voice is unique💗
Grazie per il video👍 🔝👏 Talk Talk intramontabili
Estos grupos ya .no nacen son los únicos recuerdo bello de los 80 música buenazo

British people make an art out of smoking a cigarette. Love them.
Молодцы ребята, Марк светлый человек! Будем помнить❤️
The 80s is the shit better than nowadays especially with music and people
Wow... I did not that about his brother... Only that he was a DJ and helped Mark in the beginning of his carrier...
It makes me so sad... now both of them are gone...
how it came together, with publishing deal, night club performing, then radio, very swift, momentum happened fast with these guys.....
I DID SEE THESE GUYS WHILE WORKING FOR THE PHILADELPHIA SPECTRUM WHEN THEY OPENED FOR ELVIS COSTELLO AT OUR BUILDING.
Adoroooo... Saber mais sobre eles. Mark fala tão bem... Lindooo.. Jaú/SP Brasil, 18/01/2022😘

Molto interessante e Mark Hollis è un angelo 😇

Il est toujours dommage de diffuser des images d'archives qui font tellement plaisir, et de ne pas préciser la date ! Merci !
C'est 1984, au début du groupe

Alguien que traduzca esta joyita lpm
I love his ears❤
Cool to see a long hand interview, rather than a 30 second grab.
Is Webb wearing a hebrwe shirt?
Love this...!
I'm assuming that this is in Atlanta, since Mark mentioned that they still have 4 more gigs to play?
This interview went from shit to very respectable. Well done.
Excellent thanks for posting. Does anyone know what year this is please?
Hi, I've looked into it and think it's 1982 which is very early and before their main albums.
Paul is so cute
They really could deliver live
His hair and eyes are the same color❤...
Was this the only time they toured the States? There seems to be very little information on their history over there.
Back when one could have a ciggie and a Coke! Love them and this interview.
Mark Hollis was almost a caricature of what the Yanks would think an Englishman would look like.
Seemed liked a bunch of working dudes. Kinda nice. Though those bags under his eyes says a lot, maybe also lack of sleep?
Who would’ve guessed what these guys would go on to do.
excellent use of mirrors, unsung cameraperson!
Exactly my thoughts!
Star of David on his t-shirt? Radical Ziionist I take it.
I'd go with that over a radical Mohammedan.
Gold!
What year ws the interview? I can guess mid-80s
Love it!
Saw them in 83 opening for Elvis Costello.
Where is Lee?
Getting a round in...🍻
Any background details on where they’re being interviewed? What city, date, etc?
Apparently not
1983.
Really interesting on their views about playing live. As their last albums they couldn't even play them live and were studio only.
No it don’t bruh hh
Which year was it?

Mark Hollis a class act ❤
Some of the most innovative musicians were also wise enough not to trust the press or the record companies where EVERYTHING is for sale.
Holy Shit I'm pretty sure their accents were real.
HOW DIFFERENT THEY LOOK AND SOUND IN THIS INTERVIEW. DO WE EVEN KNOW WHERE THERE AT HERE DURING THIS AND WHY WAS IT WAS SAID HERE THIS AREA WAS Bad.
When was this fillmed? Around 1984?
1982
