Only really discovered TalkTalk/Mark Hollis when his passing was announced. Listen to them all the time. I'm 72 this year, but luckily for me, my taste of music changes. I have friends who still only listen to music from late fifties/sixties. Sad really, missing out on some brilliant music. Still listen to new music. If my ears like it, and it moves me inside, I'll listen to anything.

Mark had a high IQ, bad for creavtivity in the sense of structure (pop/rock), the guy was a maverick and he was never given the credit he deserved. He could have done great things in later years but he chose family as being far more important and for that alone it just showed how he viewed the authenticity for which his art was being portrayed against the values of his children being reared. He will have my respect forever.... r.i.p. Mark.

@@m.a.gallardo2050 You're right and it was a common pattern in early interviews when he was still with the band. I remember interviews in France when they kept talking nonsense, not answering the questions, saying things like they dreamed of creating clothes made out of vegetables that people could wear all day and eat in the evening, that sort of crazy things! The '80s are currently romanticized and yes, there was some great music but there was also Reagan and an appalling and savage epidemic going on that killed 100% of those who became infected. It was a more brutal decade than people want to admit. Talk Talk's music actually symbolizes the '80s better than most of the pop of that time, although bands like Romeo Void and Shriekback also reflected the darkness of that party-hearty decade.

Maybe Mark Hollis wasn't just joking when he said that actually he himself is all the animals we see in the video of 'It's My Life'? As being so concerned with the environment and nature, I think he saw things in a holistic, spiritual way: everything connected. The animals and Nature is 'his life' that 'never ends'.
He and Pope sure loved each other; Mark's surprised, happy smile after Pope kissed him on the head at the end of the Dum Dum video, so sweet.
And what fun they must have had together, both so sensitive, creative and full of whit!

    • @saskiakneulman7275

@@jojaxy9528 Hallo Jo, To my regret I think it has been removed: 'Dum Dum Girl [take 1]', for I can't find it anymore, and I discovered that in my YT 'library' with Talk Talk video's now already 5 video's have gone. Such a shame! For 'Take 1' was to my opinion even nicer than 'Take 2'! At the end Tim Pope walks up to Mark, puts his hands around his head and kisses him on the hair. You can see Mark is very (happily) surprised, as shows his lovely smile, whilst saying something to Lee. A picture of that moment is shown in some fan made 'tributes', maybe you recognize it.
A good wintertime to you too!

You're right, I think Mark knew so much about what life is really, he knew about our holistic nature and our interconnection with all that lives and tried to explain it in simple words. He spent this life explaining to people how so simple things are actually.
Pope and him seemed so glad to work together, two soul mates I guess.
Speak your truth and bright your light. Life is as simple as that really.

It reminded me so much of Pete & Dud (the much more innocent and less crude version of Derek & Clive)

Hi Dovie, sorry 2 B a bore .......born 4 January 1955, 58. Check out the wiki.
Will always be my all time fav band ... though at 59 was around at the time. Biggest regret, never got to see them live! Check out 'Live at Montreux' Classic Mark Hollis. Cheers.

I love this video, I spent a lot of time trying to understand what they are saying, managed to understand in spite of the not perfect sound. They are both hilarious!
We learn a lot in this.

Thank you for your offer, but I barely have the time to read... I'm still on the Dice Man and I have a ton of books waiting for me.
      Thank you though.

You can, in the settings under subtitles. It's not a great translation, but it would help you.

Talk Talk is one of few '80s bands whose music resonates with equal or greater relevancy now (in pandemic-traumatized 2021) than it did in the '80s. I like their pop stuff better than the slow bubbling, jazzy- melancholic artiness of their latter day albums but all their work is fascinating. Here is my top 5 list by Talk Talk: 5. Desire 4. Living In Another World 3. Give it Up 2. It's My Life 1. Life's What You Make It
