The fact that he just automatically knew when to stop is just impressive.
I mean, he's a drummer.
He'd clearly heard it before playing it. How else would he have known when the chorus kids came in?
Other than the song being one of the most famous in the repertoire, the actual stop is displayed on top of the video - wait 63 measures and stop 1.5beats in.
@@chersegems2315 its still far easier to count to 63 than memorize every beat.
As a drummer, I intuitively know each time I play a chunk of 8 bars, so i just play 7 sets of 8 bars, a set of 4 bars, then manually count the last 4
Louie has truly captured the plight of the concert percussionist.
God, that OG recording is one of the most important jazz records off all time, but I can totally imagine Tommy Flanagan wanting to Alan Smithee his piano playing on that; I'd be demanding another recording after John called that ungodly fast tempo!
The cow has a NAME?
@@haydenhart1194 Not that I know of. I was referring to Louie Zhong, the original creator of the song and video.
I once had a piece with a 254 measure rest
Ngl, with the drums accompanying, this sounds like a bop
sounds like a bill wurtz song
@@kingkaydengaming2786
I was thinking more like some sort of jazzy shit post but that sounds accurate
That assumes that it wasn’t a bop already
@@catthatlooksatyoufunny7377 idk you are joking or not, but if you aren’t it’s Giant Steps which is kind of meme status/notorious among jazz players
Mother 2 vibes. Tbh
Welp, that's one Giant Step to rhythm purgatory.
I see what you did there
Giant step to rhythm purgatory
But tiny step for humanity
One giant leap into the pits of hell
Best comment
Nice
Lots of ghost taps for this note.
It's a freestyle system, we good
I'm disappointed he didn't just sit there staring at the camera
This particular video is what waiting in line at the DMV feels like.
I went there once to get my State ID and to tell you how many times I lost my patience is an understatement.
Given the fast tempo I propose we rename the song from "Giant Steps" to "Hurry Up and Wait"
Waiting at the DMV would be significantly less aggravating if I had a jazz drummer playing while I waited.
Painfully familiar sort of purgatory for anyone who's played in the low section of an orchestra.
purgatory? you're lucky if you get to play this much in the perc section in a symphony orchestra (concert bands are better about it but it's still.. not great)
Timpanists, unite
@@undesiradudeMy highschool concert where i had a 46 measure break before a solid 45 second timpani solo to cap off the entire song might still be my favorite band memory looking back
Violin privilege >:)
Violin privilege >:)
the pure concentration leading up to the stop was incredible
Dang he failed the heck out of this one
He was just spamming
?
don't you just hate it when ghost notes aren't allowed
all he wanted to do was jam along
nah only his left most cymbal was connected to the controller, the rest was ghost-tapping
Aww, it's not the clip of him first encountering that video. Him and chat lost their minds a little when they saw what it's going to be.
do you have a twitch link?
Now where’s Rhythm Limbo?
Akschually, according to Dante's Inferno, Limbo is part of Hell, often considered to be the First Circle, where- [a drum kit falls on top of me, crushing my fragile nerd bones, and killing me instantly]
@@imthecoolestguyalive 1d4 context damage
@@martymcloud1908 Sorry, I don't know what that means. :-(
@@imthecoolestguyalive it is a reference to DnD (or some other tabletop RPGs), where you roll dice to determine damage taken from attacks and hazards, as well as state a damage type to account for resistances and weaknesses. In this case you would be rolling a 4 sided die, also referred to a d4. The joke is that the context given by the explanation has dealt a d4 (1-4) points of damage. This now concludes my contextualization, dealing a d6 of context damage.
@@williamsmith6921 I see, thank you.
I expected either elevator music or an eternal buildup with no drop, but this is good too I guess
I thought he would just play one note
I just saw the video today. Perfect timing.
63 measures of solo, and a single hit.
As always.... Its AMAZING 🤩
That drum solo actually slaps tho
This is just what it's like playing Brass in an orchestra...
I've seen the music.
Louie took giant steps to bring us this chaos. And I love it.
Bro didn't went for the P 💀
This one bangs
Aaaaa I was waiting for you to play this!! It's even better than I could have ever imagined~
Giant Steps. An amazing song
Congratulations you helped the third soloist tap to shut his yap
i would actually love to see him play the rhythm hell game
He actually got it im impressed
I am genuinely scared
Bro remixed like he was Parappa
i stumbled upon your videos on my recommended and i saw you had two vaporeon plushies and i instantly subscribed
He is now one with the Chorus Kids.
take it chat
Ok, that was very cool !
0:46 SING IT CHAT!!!
Okay but like actually how many times did you practice this?
its pretty easy actually!!!
if you know giant steps, look at the remaining time in the video and anticipate the stop on the first bar.
@@doofs or if you know giant steps you know that a loop is 16 bars
so you can just count 4 repeats minus the last bar and time that
@@Temulgeh yeah exactly
Once
The snare backbeat is very messing with my head lmao
.............
yea cause this guy cant play jazz for shit
I've never been this coincidentally early to an 8bitdrummer's video
I think he made a feeeew more inputs than intended
I feel like it would have been better if he just did a cymbal tap after the 58 beat pause lol
63 bars, actually. This is a jazz standard called Giant Steps. Each chorus is 16 bars long. You start with the head (16 bars total), then you have a solo chorus (32 bars total), then another solo chorus (48 bars total) and you end with the head again for a total of 64 bars. You play in the last bar, so that’s not included in the multi-measure rest. So that rest is 63 bars long. I can see how 63 looks like 58 at a glance, though. Especially in the weird music font.
Hmmm… hell, purgatory… what comes next?
Rhythm queue at the motor registry office?
😂😢😮😅😊as numberblock 1 I can confirm I do this all day long
Fully expected him to just... Not play.
I can tell that he mostly plays rock beats
Peak. Subbed.
It was a great April fools joke
He sounds like a metal drummer trying to play jazz
I think he may have come in a few beats early
Now play it perfectly
i actually thought he was gonna sit there waiting for a single cow bell
I love how he finished in time...
The stop on first try is the only thing I am here for
You're not getting out of rhythm purgatory!
Damnit the drummer called for giant steps again
Woot woot
Next time: Rhythm Heaven!
Oh... wait....
Can we get any deeper than this?
I kid you not I had a part where I had a 81 measure rest.
Lol he's impatient also
Now countdown
Needs more cowbell
I think you were 0.0002718 frames off. Failed.
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🔥
The normal people who thought of an exciting song that’d be accompanied by some drums.
Nope f you we got you waiting 63.375 measures.
But we got The 8-Bit Drummer’s solo
HOW DID HE ACTUALLY COUNT THAT
The tune is 64 bars long. It’s a power of two, meaning it cleanly divides into 2-bar, 4-bar, 8-bar, 16-bar and 32-bar sections. It’s a very intuitive song length. Also, the same chord progression repeats every 16 bars, so he may be keeping track in clumps of 16. Also, this thing follows a common convention in jazz where you play the head, then do solos over the head’s chord progression, then wrap up with the head. He probably heard the head coming back, and knew that meant the song was about to finish. This is one of those situations where most people don’t actually count the rests one by one because jazz-specific context clues help them know where they are more efficiently.
Drumming to Giant Steps
rad
Reverse purgatory
Smh he failed not even 10 seconds in
As a percussionist, fuck this song
He failed very early on by playing when he clearly wasn't supposed to.
i misread that as drugs, help me :sob:
Hi
music
Btw any decaying winter enjoyers here? Just curious
Ok, what was that?
*_No, seriously, Jerod, WHAT IN THE F was that?_*
This video scares me
this song be like: ua-cam.com/video/46w1YWTD0DQ/v-deo.html
That swing was painful to watch, he had way too of a rock feel instead of a chick from the hihat on the backbeats, the dynamics and balance were very questionable, I'll give him slack since it was probably on the fly and it's an ekit, coordination seemed fine for the most part, just not the style
first
I’m sorry but you did it wrong. Not that it’s bad, this is a great giant steps drum cover. But you didn’t even have a cowbell!
Again, no malice meant and this is mostly tongue-in-cheek but you did it wrong!
From the Mysterious Rhythm League
Too many redundant inputs.
Try Again
God I hate it.
