this is actually quite genius! The way that the added percussion makes you actually focus on a single rhythm while the other one supports it, really makes you understand how theyre supposed to sound!
@@leif1075 i have absolutely no idea what the purpose of this "subjectivity" is for what youre talking about. Nor that i see any. the percussion makes you focus on a single rhythm because the percussion is literally *made* for that rhythm, hence how it sounds more pronounced for the rhythm its accompanied with. 2 + 3 and 4 + 3 are my favorites. 2 + 3 sounds like something you would hear in a visual novel 4 + 3 sounds like something you’d hear in an action movie trailer
@ElectroX7 Series 4 + 3 sounds like a Terminator trailer to be more specific. Imagine the beeps being those metallic “thumps” from the main theme from that movie
3 over 2: Nice cup of tea, nice cup of tea... where "nice, cup, tea" are the 3 beats. 4 over 3: Pass the goddamn butter! (Pass, the, damn, -ter are the 4, god/but- are our other beats of 3. :)
I'd love to see a version where the shapes don't separate side by side - the overlay was a really cool and easy to follow visual to see where the beats coincide.
The first sequence of 2:3 through 4:5 is the same as it happens in the intro of "Fanfare for Effective Freedom" by Horse Lords, much recommended listen if you're into polyrhythms and odd meters.
I love how adding the beat and then moving it from the fewer subdivisions to greater subdivisions doesn't actually change the speed of the beat, but certainly feels like it does.
I just saw one of these that just kept increasing, never actually becoming music and I thought this was gonna be the same. When it started adding rhythms I was pleasantly surprised and I actually got excited when the beats showed up.
i was so confused on what "poly rhythms" actually was, and this video explained it, without words, and perfectly well for someone who doesn't understand music theory AT ALL. i actually understand it! thank you!!
This is a fantastic representation. As a novice piano player, having to play triplet notes with the right hand while playing quavers in my left makes me brain hurt quite a lot.
Thank you for this! I’ve been looking for a way of better understanding the way different types of traditional African percussion rhythms are layered together. This helps a lot.
Whats really crazy about this is, if you play drums and just kinda know how to do it, this is how drumbeats are constructed, like some of us just do this polyrhythm shit without even knowing
For one you can vary the circumference of the polygons and the speed of traversal through them to obtain probably every combination possible, also you can use different geometric shapes.
Polyrhythms can difficult for me to try on piano because I have to balance at least two rhythms at once. But this is a very helpful representation thank you
If my music teachers were able to use an animation like these to explain polyrhythms to me, I'd have understood the music theory side much better and earlier. I could play polyrhythms easily, but it took me many years to grasp _what_ I was playing or be able to read some sheet music and play it back. A very cool video for sure.
I'm imagining a little V-Tuber or X-tan type avatar called "Polly Rhythm" who explains these things to people. Her outfit is covered in all the little geometric shapes and timing bars.

4 + 3 and drum beats based on 3 had a pretty nice sound.
