Congrats on the new place! It's always great to move into a larger garage.
I feel you with having a shop do sub par work and having to go back and do it yourself. I'm spending this weekend redoing some work on my Volvo that I should have just done myself in the first place.

Hey, AR, good to see you again. Congrats on your move to Murrieta. I'm in South OC just over the mountains from there.
Good to see Das Boot is back in your hands, and it sounds like the TCG job worked out fine other than the VC bolts and coil pack mounts. Those are really touchy torque points on the M62tu motor as far as stripping threads. There are a few on my motor that are holding but I only torque to finger-tight because you can feel the metal giving way. I can't blame either the mechanic for those if he doesn't do a lot of M62tus. The front 6 bolts are somewhat expensive from BMW (I don't think there are aftermarket choices) but I used those and they bit into the Upper TC covers good enough up there.
There are still a lot of salvage yards here in SoCal that have e38s (personal visits) so I would go there to get a new valve cover. I have my e38 valve covers powder coated, but they also coated the bottom flanges so the seal with the rubber gasket isn't entirely perfect so every 2-3k miles or so I take of the plastic vanity covers and swab out the couple mLs of oil in there gathering but not yet in the spark plug wells.
Re the upper engine covers, its been over four years since I did my last a full TCG job on the M62TU so I don't quite remember where the trouble spots are only for the upper TC covers that will be that require special tools, but if you're doing the driver's side IIRC you will not need to un-tension the timing chain through removal and re-install of the main tensioner on the RH (passenger) side. Most of it will be removing the stuff in front of it. Not really a big deal but it takes time.

Congrats on the move. I can relate on the timing procedure...i did the guides on my project e38 but then 3 of those same bolts stripped. Luckily i messed up the timing procedure so i gotta take it back apart anyways LOL

    Hey man,
Just a suggestion - Maybe you could get a set of valve covers from LKQ at 35$ a piece and get them professionally powder coated? That might be cheaper than repairing your valve covers. Do you know if anyone has aluminum valve covers for M62?
Would love to see E38 back on the road!

Wow, so sorry to hear about the lack of quality work they did on your E38.... There's no excuse for their subpar work, they should be called out! I hope you get your E38 back in working order, I've put well over $16,000 into mine to almost fully mechanically restore it. It's well worth it, awesome to have a like new 01' 740iL!! 🤙🏻

It's all good, she is up and running again with no upper leaks, now I gotta take care of some transmission pan leaks and some other things here and there but she is still chugging along.
I agree that there's no excuse and I'll never use them again, but it happened and now it's in the past.
$16k is a chunk of money, wow, I bet she rides smooth
PS: I looked at some of the video on your profile, so cool that you're a pilot, I'm currently in the process of doing my ground school!

@@ARPerez I'm glad to hear that. Yeah, it handles the bumps well with a sporty ride.
Wow, that's awesome man, keep after it!
I'm currently an airline pilot right now with a regional airline. I'll have to post a video of my E38 sometime.
Are you looking to be a professional pilot?

    • @ARPerez

Do some time as a corporate pilot, see how I like it, then possibly transition to airline.
