The real problem is that there is no consistency from umpires across the board in decisionmaking regarding serves.

Try throwing the ball with an open or flat palm. By open, I mean palm should be horizontal to the ground. See how much spin it generates - close to none. That’s the rule your holy ML broke. If you don’t believe me, watch Samsonov’s high toss serves (example of perfectly legal serves).

I'm a huge proponent of fair play and I hate pro players that try to go as close to the rules as possible or worse go over the line. That said ML's high toss spin doesn't change the spin meaningful and you should know that, if you play on an amateur+ level. The rule is there so that players don't intentionally flick the ball with A LOT of spin to meaningfully change the spin of the serve. Try to be more good faith. It's the first time I see an imparting-spin-in-service call. I'm kinda confused. This type of fault is not in the match official's handbook nor is it in the umpire's training videos, but effectively this fault exists per rule 2.6.2. I saw the service on slow motion and Ma Long turns his hand sideways when tossing the ball, which gives spin, but I don't know how big deal is this. I think the Umpires and Referees Committee should specify in the handbook the purpose of this rule, as it's clearly not specified anywhere (Example: Match official's handbook specifies that the purpose of the open palm is for the ball to not be gripped, so the precise curvature of the hand is no big deal). I used to think that "imparting spin" would mean to deliberately spin the ball with your fingers, but apparently the ball can also be spinned like Ma Long did. I'd like the URC to clarify this.

I support any umpire actively trying to cut this practice out though. The second serve is difficult to tell from this distance. I could not detect any active attempt to impart spin but the umpire is closer. Almost all high tosses will have a little spin on them due to difficulty of throwing a pure knuckleball, so I hope it was not this that influenced the decision. He certainly does place the ball on the outside of his hand and bring the inside of the hand up first so it would not surprise me in the least if some additional spin was imparted. This is again not an uncommon technique and one that can often be called for obscuring the ball as well as imparting spin.
It is allowed if the throw does not exceed a specific angle, i think it is 30° (there has to be a tolerance range, because it is not realistic to throw the ball perfectly vertical). That is controlled by the cameras. Dimas throw is legal, it just looks thrown sideways, because he throws it really high. So the long way up leads into a longer way to the side. But considered relatively he throws it straight. If you think of throwing the ball up with just a little angle of 5°, but 100m high, the ball will come down many meters away from where you thrown it. It is the same with Dima, who throws it 2m+ high for the tomahawk serve while others just lift it up a few centimenters. There are many other pros who do not do that as legal as Dima.

He should be, because that's exactly the kind of angle you need to impart more spin on a tomahawk serve. The reason is simple: Not many umpires have the balls to do their job right according to the rulebook, although there are video cameras everywhere that make their job easier.

I went and researched some other videos and as people have said below if they created a rule book with videos how to explain the rules Samsonov is a perfect example of the proper way to toss the ball for a serve. Ma Long's second serve it's easy to identify the purposeful illegal serve by watching the palm of his hand. The toss should have a flat palm for the whole toss, where as his toss here he goes from flat (horizontal) to a vertical hand position to increase the spin for the serve. Also looking at the Ma Long vs Samsonov 2019 World Championship almost every Ma Long toss was an improper serve. He doesn't toss the ball straight up, he tosses from the center of the table and receives the ball towards the corner where he makes contact for the serve. I've haven't played in a long time and never got over 1800, but it's unfortunate that you have World Class players that try to bend the rules for an advantage.

It will be said that Ma Long won the 2020 Olympics in spite of the calls and the judges' actions didn't matter but we all can't boast the ability to spot our opponents 8 points and still win the match like Ma Long. If every pro and amateur player worldwide were held to that level of scrutiny Table tennis wouldn't be enjoyable. I hate to say it but perhaps it's time to standardize the serve if this is what players will be facing, because point outcomes should not be determined by any bystander. Great judging. Its hard to pick up but he is clearly right,. The rules are as following. Hold the ball in your open palm, behind your end of the table. Toss at least 6” straight up, and strike it on the way down. Ma long starts with an open palm then he toss it vertically. clearly falls even if he dident add/apply any spin to the ball. And the first behind hes head is obvious.
First is fair and again repeating second one his 2 point got deducted and increased 1 point to opponent, he gave him warning but again he does at least he could change his position 🤷🏼♂️
Contrary to what most people are saying as if it was kind of blasphemous of the umpire to call against Ma Long, I would like to appreciate that at least he is trying to enforce the serve rules which many top players (except good old Vladi probably) violate regularly. There is no proof in this video that he didn’t call Dima’s serves, so no point raising that question.

당연히 기계를 통해서 얼마만큼 공이 회전했는지가 입증되어야 함.
그것이 입증되지 않으면, 심판의 이중잣대가 문제임.

Great judging. Its hard to pick up but he is clearly right,. The rules are as following. Hold the ball in your open palm, behind your end of the table. Toss at least 6” straight up, and strike it on the way down. Ma long starts with an open palm then he toss it vertically. clearly falls even if he dident add/apply any spin to the ball. And the first behind hes head is obvious.

Contrary to what most people are saying as if it was kind of blasphemous of the umpire to call against Ma Long, I would like to appreciate that at least he is trying to enforce the serve rules which many top players (except good old Vladi probably) violate regularly. There is no proof in this video that he didn’t call Dima’s serves, so no point raising that question.
