- Lot of folks have hopped on the braided-line bandwagon and never left 👀 but there's a time and place for everything.... Here's my take on mono vs braided line when slinging Rapala Jigging Raps for walleyes.

from a guy who watches lots of UA-cam videos about fishing your videos keep me interested and have lots of helpful tips thanks for the knowledge
Thank YOU. Seriously means a lot!
Great explanation Brett of the differences between the two lines and the rods used. I just learned a lot from watching that. Your videos are really informative and entertaining, well I look forward to watching them and you're an awesome fisherman. I have some of these lures and really never knew how to use them correctly. Thanks for the lesson 👍
Absolutely, Bill! Pumped you're enjoying them and thanks much for watching. 👊
Always informative! Love it. Thanks man
Thx man! 👊
I think its important to run both. Mono will have a slightly different action than braid and that can be the difference. I noticed that this weekend on Mega Live. The fish would spook with the braid (overworking the bait) but the spongy give to mono slowed the action enough to trigger the fish.
*This was my first time using Braided line and I was happy with the product **enjoyable.fishing** recommend it's held up well and I have no complaints. Would buy again.*
Great video, tips and suggestions!
I appreciate it! 👊
Great job man. You make everything so clear. Keep up the good videos.
I never noticed how pumped your jigging arm is compared to the other 💪
Great video. Mono helps with tip wrap also but feels like a rubber band. I use 14 lb fire line for its wiriness and a 12 lb leader after a tiny swivel. Medium lite rod. Works for me. Thanks
Thx! When you find that magic line + rod combo that works best for you = stick with it! 👊
Thanks for the upload! Great vid!
Thank you for watching!
Excellent explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
I use braid all the time. I hardly ever lose a fish. I've tried both and the sensitivity of the braid makes it better in my book. As long as you have the right rod they can't shake the hook! Just pull hard. Can't give em any slack!
Definitely important to match your line with the right rod. And regardless of your preference if they get any slack you're donezo LOL. For sure agree that pulling hard (harder than you'd think) with constant pressure is the best way to get them in the boat. And just hope your buddy doesn't miss with the net job on the first swipe 😂. Thanks for watching!
Gotta find dem Eyes Number One ☝🏻
No doubt!

That G.Loomis Tat THO!!!!!!
😂😂😂 we are all 18 once lol
Just got back from Vermillion and had two rods rigged with jiggin raps after seeing Al's video and your reference to that vid. One setup was 10lb mono on a 6' 10" medium fast and the other 10lb braid on a 7' 2" medium light fast. Both had #9 jiggin raps. The mono with a #9 is not what you want to use, even vertical jigging. Moving down to a #7 with mono was way better and I felt I had much better control of the lure. I didn't get to test the two rigs against each other as the bite was Flicker Shads and Scatter Raps out deep. Still got plenty of soft water time to compare the two as braid really stretches to hook hole in the side of walleye's mouth if you don't finesse them in.
You are a brave, brave man stretching the line so tight while holding a snap rap covered in hooks in your bare hand.
😂😂😂 Have definitely had a few of them in my hand before. Wakes you up pretty quick.
Great info n love the shirt!!
Thx! 👊 That's our Ron Lindner Tribute T!

I bought a fenwick aetos 7'6" med/light extra fast action for ripping jigging raps on braid.
She's a beaut, Clark!
i've eliminated mono on all my rigs, everything is spooled with suffix 832, i've tried all braids, 832 is the best i've come across
It's GREAT braid no doubt! Have 832 spooled on the majority of my walleye setups, besides just 2 really. One of course for Jigging Raps on a stouter rod. The other I keep spooled with 8-lb mono for casting jigs shallow...had my butt kicked by it before and will always have one spooled in case. There's just something special about the way it floats a jig...but of course much more difficult to get a good feel and hookset compared to braid. Thanks for watching!
Great info! Hows the new console boat working with that bite? Have you adjusted from the tiller life :)
I'm in love with that 2025 Impact XS! Running and gunning with Jigging Raps is definitely the hardest adjustment and one of the only times I would say that I would prefer to have a tiller. Not so much when you've found areas holding fish, but when I get into scramble mode and start scanning and hopping spots with a rod in hand and never shutting off the Merc. Still wouldn't trade it tho hahaha. One day when I win the lottery I'll own both 😂. Thanks again, Nicholas!
@@TargetWalleye Awesome man! Glad to hear you are loving it. It is on the short list for me. Looks like a great all around package for family and fishing. Thanks again for all the info!
Awesome video! you describe things very well. Got a new follower! So, if I don't have any fluorocarbon on hand, can I use Mono to match the braided line lb. as a leader?
Right on !! 😎
Hi great video! What about a Medium extra-fast action to run with 10lbs braid? Would that do the trick? Or Am I really better off buying a ML fast?
Newer viewer here. Question... St Croix introduced a dedicated Jig N Rap model on a couple of their lines of rods. It's a mod-fast. Do you see any benefit there vs. fast? Supposedly inceeases hook-up ratio.
I think where a mod-fast would shine would be for keeping fish pinned once they are on, especially if you're running a braided main line with no stretch. I prefer mono for my main line on Jigging Rap setups, so I think mono combined with a mod-fast rod would be too spongy to get hooks into fish when pitching or casting out away from the boat. Vertical jigging or close to the boat would probably be fine. Also it's tough to say without feeling it in the hands. Brands and even different models within the same brand can all be so different. What one company calls a mod-fast might actually fish like a fast in a different one, etc.
@@TargetWalleye I appreciate the detailed response. Thank you, sir
Do you rip on slack line or when theirs tension?
I typically try to rip on slightly slack line because that is going to give the bait its "darty-est" action and allow it to do a 180 and change directions. But there can be days where a slower, more consistent rip might get more bites.
What knot choice do you go with for braid to floro?
I like the double-uni knot simply because I can tie is SO fast and I haven't had it fail me on a fish. But when I'm using a glide bait, I attach the fluoro with a small swivel.
@@TargetWalleye ill have to try that, iv been tying the fg knot but iv been having issues with it not cinching tight when using the smaller diameter lines.
Where you find those t shirt ? Thanks
Do you need a swivel if using braid to mono leader
I always run a small swivel because the way this style of bait darts and changes direction underwater will cause a ton of line twist. Also they'll sometimes spin like a helicopter when pitching 'em straight into stiff winds.
and here I thought you were a bass guy
I am 😂😂😂
G.loomis tattoo with with a Elliots rod in hand.....huh?
Hahaha we were all 18 once 🤷♂️.... I have rods from probably a dozen different manufacturers. All have their pros and cons, and specific situations where I like each. Thx for watching!
There is correct answer, you NEVER use mono when jigging, you lose all feeling. Mono is ass, only useful for ice fishing or trolling.
I've seen days where braid lost to mono 6 to 1 or worse.
@@snipersam204 how come?
@paake3134 cause the jig sinks slower with mono. Gives it a more lethargic action. Definitely takes some getting used to the feel when your used to braid though.
@@snipersam204 you get same effect with thicker braid too though.
Im 56 and have fished for 45 years. Braid is nonsense. Never even considered it. Used trilene xl since day 1. Never had a problem catching fish. The whole fishing line debate is nonsense. Learn how to fish. Most fish are dumb. If you cant catch em, you might be dumber.
Well that sucked...
Thanks Joe! 😂🤷♂️
