  • ORBITAL - "Dŵr Budr" from the IN SIDES album
Written by Paul and Phil Hartnoll
    Vocals :Alison Goldfrapp.
The day before mastering the album, Paul felt it wasn't complete, so wanted to fill the gap. He wrote Dŵr Budr the day before the cut!
This was another quick creation. Completed in one day with the first part on the morning and second part later in the day.
The vocals are from another recording session but at the time they didn't work out. In a frantic search to complete the track, they played around with these. The final version was pitched differently and also reversed.
Hardware used, Xpander, Wave Station, SH 101 and E-mu Emulator III sampler, 808 and Arp 2600
The title is welsh for dirty water and influenced by the oil spill just off Pembrokeshire coast, which was caused by the Sea Empress.

I can't explain the joy this song gives me. I remember trying to play this for people back in high school. This whole album seemed so much more organic than the other electronic music of the 90's, and this song here was like this strange uplifting daydream that mutates into a weird playful funk before landing. It's a full 10 min journey for sure.

Maybe Paul Hartnoll got teached how to deliver things quickly working in a Pizza restaurant? It is just amazing that this masterpiece of a song was made in a day! I think I also have read that the Peel Sessions "Lush Euro Tunnel Disaster '94" and "Walk About" was done in a day, Lush before lunch and Walk About after lunch.

I'd like to see theses guys hide away nowadays with a studio of gear Elektron provided... & not come out until they discovered making a 'Other Sides' lp from the Elektron vs Orbital experiment. Love this so much & finally finding my 'In Sides' influences coming thru more & more so, as I expand & explore producing music outside the box... With Elektrons & other assorted grooveboxs or xoxbox things of more modern times... How they did this then prior to real DAWS & make things sync, sound & behave well as technology in the OG days & lps... Both live or in a studio then, was highly inspiring but near impossible for the common techno geek on the street to level there own humble techno tickerings by 4 sure.

I can feel the mdma more so from a memory of it... When I listen back thru my favourite music like this again... To trigger the memory now of it. We would save a extra half or whole 12hr MDA/MDMA mixed pill, common in our town in those times... For after the raves, & from sun up till sun down the day afterwards... We would usually be with a group of 6-12 close or new found friends, that spent the next day coming back up as a common chill out routine. If we happened to be playing, dj'ing or helping with some participating of putting on small raves through out that decade too... Then often my best mates had helped hire & work lighting rigs for those party's. & we could take the lights back to a home & use them for a extra day... The PA hire places close Sundays so it was a excuse to kick on & get the extra time using the lighting system more. But we got to hear the music we chose to experience while being in the E experience too... That for me was a very important balance of the time as it was living in the experience of that shift & times...
