- ORBITAL - "P.E.T.R.O.L" from the IN SIDES album
Written by Paul and Phil Hartnoll
Drums : Clune
Some facts about this track:-
Commissioned for one of the first PlayStation games - Wipeout. Orbital were sent a VHS of someone playing the game for 5 minutes. They then used this to create the track, as if they were creating a score.
All the weird percussion sounds and odd FX was made on the ARP 2600. This was then sampled so it could be played like a drum machine. Clune breaks were also used.
The whining stereo drone is from one of Paul's favourite synths. The Oberheim Xpander
I asked Paul about the title, to see if the letters meant something. He explained:-
"Sadly it doesn’t mean anything, we wanted to call it "Petrol" to go along with the dirty fuel feel of the game but one of my favourites , Severed Heads had a track which I love called "Petrol" . So as a kind of tribute to the heads and to make it different, we put the dots in giving it a bit of a future retro feel. Like a Gerry Anderson show... Captain Scarlet and U.F.O."
First time I heard this tune was playing Wipeout on the PlayStation. I’ve been a Orbital fan ever since
same here lol
The whole album is a masterpiece. Already 25years part of my musical dna!
Heck yeah dude
Absolutely 👍

間違いなくオービタルの最高傑作
I want to see this track live before i die !
Old school forever - Forever Old School
I wasn’t into video games like most of my friends, and they weren’t into electronic music like me. So, when I’d hear a tune that I recognized; it would give each of us a different appreciation for the other. In Sides is one of the best albums to this day.
This is probably my favorite track from the album. Can't believe it's been 25 years.
This album is flawless and timeless. A perfect progression from Snivlization. Unsurpassed.
Epic track that has amazing layers. It sounds so dirty and love the last section from 4:40
Makes me want to go to a massive live show again! 😷👍
It's funny, this definitely has the feel of a post-urban decay dystopia, slightly manic and sinister - perfect for the game I guess; also great for the ears!
Powerful nostalgia!
Yes !!!!
I guess 148bpm is the universally accepted bpm for excitement......
Wipeout and this track. Perfection. Sounds just as epic now as it did when I first heard it 25 years ago playing that game. PS1 launch day
Was actually in the sequel 2097
@@AC_Milan1899 This Orbital tune ‘Wipeout (P.E.T.R.O.L.)’ was in the original Wipeout game. It was written and recorded specifically for the game and was included on their Insides album. It wasn’t used in the PAL version of Wipeout 2097. The tune is included on the Wipeout 2097 soundtrack CD. What a great piece of music
Just love it
This album was my entrance into Ambient
No one ever came up with anything even close
One of the best Electronic Acts, legendary.
That sound at the beginning and throughout is so awesome. It's like youve angered a robot wasps nest, its so menancing.
I used to have it on cassette. It still sounds phenomenal to this day!
Top 3 best tune of all time, irrespective of genre, imo. Played this at full blast at my mate's house soon soon-ish after release and I just could not believe what a banger of a track it is! Those geiger counter sounds and synth riffs, pwhoar!
Always loved it. 😍 So well produced. 🎧
Loved your tracks too. Wipeout disc into the CD player. Skip track 1 and off we go.
(Paul Watt) Another iconic Orbital track and contender to blow your bass speakers.. Love the gong sound in the intro. A very danceable piece but will take it out of your legs big time. Thank goodness for the slight respite at 4.10 :-) Fab spacey closeout Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Wipeout!
One of the best Orbital songs of all time...
a masterpiece
Awesome every time.
One of the sickest tunes ever. Also, best Orbital album for easily for me
Of course #weloveit since 1996 🍀🥁👁🎁🎶🌍🌻✌🏼🌞💓🦋
Dark, powerful, insightful!
Absolutely awesome track, still giving me goosebumps 25 years later!
Spring 97. On the way back from a party about 3am, the back road from Brittas to Bohernabreena over the mountain, a fast car ie. not mine, and a good stereo. Belting this out as loud as possible and with my right foot nailed to the floor. I can still feel the rush now.
That’s such a dark road too, I can imagine the feeling, nothing like it
Feels like I'm playing Wipeout :)
Love the way this sounds
And there it is. Music and game perfection.
Legendary Track!
Nice
requires extreme volume levels to properly enjoy.
Genius track! Love that thumpy res bass drum!
Love the menacing quality of this tr
Love this track so hard..literally got me into dance music. Remember going under the tent at a capacity crowd at Phoenix 97 first festival I think into this and it was magic. On druids dream and all the little sounds in this song made it seem like there was little green fire flies every where. There wasnt of course but it was true magic ha
Proper banger of a tune , great album
♥ My Youth ♥ ...LOVE THIS ALBUM
Wow this gonna be great!!
Lots of love for this album 🌈
Timeless banger!
I remember wipeout well ! It may be why I race drones nowadays, closest thing to wipeout in real life !
thank you
Still gives me good chills and some tears after all these years! Auditory bliss!
Fantastish!
Been looking for the name of this track for years haha, had no idea it was by orbital. In the mid to late 90s this was used in a couple robot documentaries my parents taped for me, and it always stuck out as sorta creepy and intriguing, brings to mind being operated on by a trustworthy but menacing looking robotic surgeon
25 years is a milestone!! Perfect time to re-issue the release? no?
Tells a tale of humanity this track for me and sure it will be looked back in future generations times. Industrial systematic obliteration of the planet.... with undertones of hope and belief of the sacred few
I would love to see this audio paired with that video clip they scored it to.
Still one of the darkest songs i ever had the privilege of listening to.
I remember in the late 1990s as a kid, walking into a record store searching for new electronic music, and finding this new CD in the Electronica section. Orbital. Sounds interesting, I thought. I had no idea what to expect when I bought it, but this track is a shining, inspiring example of Orbital's classic and unique album, Thanks, Orbital! Great to see you're still going in 2023 with a new album!
Just 😊
Damn love it...😍👌

Thank you for the nice facts!

This album is just amazing and timeless, as all classic are. I want it on vinyl though: just because I want the artwork to be big!
Il brano migliore di Wipeout 👍🏼 da allora fan degli orbital. Mi dispiace non averli scoperti prima 😩
Been a while...
Are we ever gonna get a Rerelease or Streaming options for the Time Fly and Box Singles, or even rarer the First American Release on Insides that has those singles as the second disc?
ин сайдс мой любимый альбом в нём много жизни
Cheers to WIPEOUT 2097 .
awesome soundtrack
@@panchosanz I didnt even care about music before that.
Orbital rules!
The WipEout 2048 remix is equally as good as the original P.E.T.R.O.L; perfect that is!
I can't hear this without hearing someone say 'shockwave', 'missiles', 'mines'...
Was this the cd in a sort of blue and yellow hazard stripe box ?
At least I think it was, and had a insert that was talking about a lorry with solar panels?
Great stuff !
So glad I saw them at their last Hammersmith show, my mrs who's from the Philippines see people dancing and thought we'd stumbled into some weird cult lol
By the end of the show she said that was superb
Soy fan hacen buena musicauwu
3,1415 ...... Pi
Did Sasha use that one for his track on Wipeout 3 Xpander?
Please repress the LP of INSIDES !
05:58.
also known by Aronofsky's Phi OST
Right movie, wrong letter - it's Pi, not Phi. Great movie with a lot of good tracks on the OST, I advise people to check it out.
Streets of Rage
i think theme was taken from early 82 chris and cosey track "the giant's feet " from album "trance" ua-cam.com/video/eR0Ki-JFLFo/v-deo.html
I like the 'Arabian/Egypt' feeling
and it could be used for the game 'Exhumed/Powerslave' too.
Never stop to make something and
have nice days and fun 🍹
And if you like 'Orbital' listen my Song 'SCIFU7E - 5Y2'
The year is 2097
This song was on the first game though 😊
It's a past of electronic music.
