  • Hi Guys,
    On this vlog episode we share with you our thoughts on why we feel Real estate in the Azores is a great investment; especially now. We bought a rustic property on Pico Island recently; thought it would be great time to pass forward our positive experience to you.
    All 9 islands of the Azores have been gaining popularity in the last couple of years. This popularity is not only in Tourism, it also carries over to retirement. There is a continues increase in Portuguese immigrants and expats settling down in the Azores
    Why buy now? One very important reason is that these Portuguese islands are not saturated; you can still find variety, quality and value to suit your tastes and budgets. We believe that investing in real estate in the Azores is sound, healthy, rewarding and life changing.
    Azores checks most of the boxes: safe, affordable, peaceful, hospitable, healthy, nature, dramatic landscapes, low crime, very little pollution, well connected to the world and much more.
    In the last part of this episode we will also take you on a tour of a typical rustic home that happens to be for sale. On the video we state the house is 100 years old but in fact it was built in the 80’s! This will give you an idea on what this type of property is like.
    We hope you enjoy it; please click the like button if you do.

    My biggest conflict with the Acores is that I want everyone to know about it and I want nobody to know about it. I want it to be celebrated and recognized but fear that as more people know about it they bring all the bad things that come with increased tourism. I hope that as more people visit and get to know our islands they leave their bad habits behind and respect the islands ... Especially Pico ;)

      I live in Hawaii. I understand your conflict since it's already happened here. We share a special relationship with the Azores. I few came here from the Azores and Madeira to work on the pineapple and sugar cane plantations. Though few, the had a huge impact on our culture and helped shape what it is today. From one islander to another, I hope you stay well.

    For me, Pre-covid, Sao Miguel was already at that tipping point of being spoiled by tourism. I really hope the islands stay as beautiful as they are.

      We see that as well Brendan. I think the other islands like Pico, Faial, Sao Jorge etc see what is happening in Sao Miguel and they don't want any of that. We believe that the healthy tourism will have the most long term success, not only for the environment but also in business. More and more people look to spend time in an all around healthy environment and they will invest in that($$$). Azores is this kind of place; lets keep it that way. Sorry for the lengthy response! Take care! Saude!

    I love the Azores too. Like Carlos I was born in the Azores (Sao Miguel) and have lived in Canada since childhood. I have travelled the world and to me there is no comparison to the natural beauty,, warmness of the people, and the peace and tranquillity that the Azores offers with all the amenities one could want. I returned many years later and now plan to spend my winters there as I enter retirement. These islands really are magical!

Also , have you heard of international shippers delivering containers with personal household items to Pico. I know it’s through the roof right now. ( pricewise) butcthst it will come down to reasonable prices next year( hopefully we‘ll be post- covid then). I am researching shipping. Another portugal expat youtube’s advised against shipping stuff, but she lives in Lisbon. I do understand the perspective of starting anew, but I have a full house and am trying to understand how things work on an island , since we never lived on an island...especially re shipping things getting things. Just ran across your video while searching for videos of the Triangle Islands which my wife and I will be visiting in May including another visit to Sao Miguel. We've been fortunate to travel fairly extensively and agreed that based on our one week-long visit to Sao Miguel, the Azores definitely rate as one of our favorite places. I thoroughly enjoyed your very informative video and look forward to visiting Pico and the other islands and maybe even look at some properties.

Just like you, we have been in lots of Islands and different countries but hands down Azores is where our hearts belong, its hard to explain the feeling if you don't get to go there. The smell and taste of the salt gets to your blood stream LOL,the food and drinks is something else that we enjoy so much there and like you said, the people are so welcoming , We look at everyone there as a big family.

It is more affordable to find regular long stay or yearly renters. I have seen average long stay monthly rates average between 300 to 800 euros per month, depending on the size of property, island and area on the chosen island. I hope this helps. It's a huge problem in Portugal (maybe the Azores / Pico especially??) with properties inherited by multiple owners, which is the norm when there is no will (which seems to be the norm also). Makes it worse when the heirs are scattered across the globe, which is also common.

      @@ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552 One of the houses, a 3 story, a grand house in its day, the house my cousins wife grew up in, the walls are still standing. The roof, and two floors have caved in. But the walls are straight. there is a mother in law type house next door, that is up. 2 houses on one lot. The city put a new roof on it for the Mother that was still living there about 15 years ago. If nothing happens there, it too will cave in as the supports to the tile are wood. The house next door (other side, shares a wall with the 3 story house), was for sale. Complete with everything in it for E49k four years ago. I don't know if it sold, I was going to use the offer from Pico for them to pay 75% of the cost of the rebuild if I turn it over to the Island to rent out to tourist for 5 years. Thanks for another great video. I think if I were a native, it would be hard to imagine the changes. Yes, change is good but finding the balance is important. It’s like what happened in Hawaii. Yes they’ve benefited from added infrastructure and $$ from tourism, but at what expense? I imagine for retirees, having access to healthcare is important. How is it there? Is there even a hospital? Also, where do you all get your water?

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 роки тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Finding that balance will be crucial. Change will happen; must have controls in place. Another good thing is that Azores is different than Hawaii, Bermuda etc... climate, location etc. It will never be like these type of islands; in my opinion. Like I mentioned in the video ; there will never be perfection . These islands have various water sources. Take care! Saude!

      Yes, each of the islands has a small hospital plus three large hospitals with more services on Fial, Terceira, & São Miguel, and the Portuguese Air Force has a medivac service in case you have to be transferred from one island to another or the mainland.

    I’m trying to convince my husband to retire in Portugal. I have dual citizenship with US and Portugal. May mother was born in São Jorge and my father was born in Faial, but spent much of his childhood in Lajes do Pico. I still have family there. Aside from teaching my husband to drive a stick shift my concern about healthcare. I have MS. Will I have to go to the mainland often for care or is there more advanced healthcare on the islands?

      Hi Maria, appreciate your comment. I was born in Lajes on Pico island, small world. A lot of Immigrants & Expats are choosing Portugal to retire or semi retire. Overall; the healthcare in Portugal is pretty good from what I've heard. You just have to keep in mind that the best hospitals are in larger areas, like Lisbon, Porto etc. As far the Azores; the main hospitals would be in Sao Miguel and Terceira. If you are in one of the smaller islands and you need a higher form of care, they would either fly you the 2 main islands or in some cases even to Lisbon. As for MS; I'm not sure, my guess would be that the best care is in Lisbon. I hope this helps. Take care!

    Some people are unable to sell and therefore they can't buy. Offer permanent property swop (swap, troca, permuta), a swop of ownership for good, so to speak. I did an international swop (US to PT) and it was a triple swap involving three properties and it was surprisingly easy to achieve and it was abut 10 times cheaper in terms of attorney, notary etc. costs involved in the transaction (about €600 total cost on one side). Swop property for property, with or without any cash involved for the differences in property values. I did a swop approximately, lose or win a bit. Or you can live where you are stuck for decades being unable to sell or lose or even win a little but even if you lose 20%, still it's better than being stuck in the place you no longer want to live at. Or move to a place where you want to live now ad not decades later.

    Conssider it well before u invest there. It may be green and sunny in the summertime +-2 months but most of the time its foggy, rainy and so on

      We love these nature elements, not a good reason for us not to invest. We spent a whole year in the Azores , a special place. The perfect investment and lifestyle for us. Take care!

    We have a place in Lagos in the Algarve which we haven't been able to get to since Feb last year! We are trying to learn Portuguese but the pronunciation is the most difficult thing. I am surprised that you pronounce Azores as it looks phonetically? I say this as euros is pronounced "eurosh" so why is it not Azworesh? #confused

      Your Portuguese sounds like Laura's. Just keep at it; practice makes perfect. lol Algarve is another great region of Portugal; still have to visit Lagos. Take care! Saude!

    Terceira has my heart as my parents were born there. Even tho I was born in the US my connection is strong when I’m on the island. My hope is to move there for part of the year in about 4 yrs.

    But tourist's are potential buyers so why differentiate?

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 роки тому

      Appreciate your comment James. The ones who are buying or building the most are either tourists or the Azoreans or descendants, from what I'm noticing. You also have people who came to work through a company or based in the US army. Hopefully .Cheers

    Not too much REAL info. Music kinda annoying. More importantly: How is the place Heated? Cooled? Mean temp. of island? What are the BAD things? Are they very Green over there- what do they do with the trash? How do they make their electricity and do houses have their own WATER? Sewage or septic system? How much are utilities on avg? What are the worst weather months? What is the FOOD like? Is it expensive? Or do you need to grow your OWN? How IS the soil for growing? It look fairly rocky, hence the stone houses (which are SO beautiful). Admittedly a nice place, but we need more 'nuts & bolts' info and living costs. Thanks.

    As a Canadian can I buy real estate in Portugal?

    • @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552
      @ourjourneyonpicoisland-car552  3 роки тому

      Yes you can! You will need to fulfill a few conditions. You need a Portuguese tax#, in order to get one you need to have a representative in Portugal(could be a friend, lawyer etc). Then you need a bank account, maybe a few other simple conditions...that is it! I hope this helps!
