I was there. Class of '84-'85. I'm still amazed that these videos made it to UA-cam! There are so many great performances that we as students had access to. P-1 was the best room at the school for these concerts. Maybe we\ll see the video of Frank Gambale and Tim Bogert jamming a blues between songs. AMAZING! Frank playing blues!
I saw this same configuration in 84 with Neil Stubenhaus filling in for Roscoe at the Ice House in Pasadena, reading charts that hung over 2 stands ...A hugely influential night in my young life.
Used to see them around this time, maybe '82 at Blackie's in Santa Monica. Smoked a fatty and got there early and sat right in front of Robben! Killer music and great times!
Similar story in Berkeley at Blakes Rathskeller. Use to see him with his brothers play there and there was a club in the outter Sunset in SF. It was before he got more famous. Could get there right around showtime and even put your feet up on the stage. Inexpensive, first class blues show for not too much money. Still felt lucky to see him in a bigger venue with the Blue line at Slims (Boz Scagg's club, so of market,) but you had to get there earlier to be able to get up front.
Of all the versions of Revelation I’ve heard Robben play , I think this is my favorite .
I was there!! My husband and I were at all his gigs. We worked next door at a gift shop and someone said that Robben was playing that night. We didn't even go home we just finished work and went. This is one of his best lineups, the man is an animal! No one plays like this! 'Love him! 'Love all of them!!
Lucky you! They are all great, Robben, Vinnie, Russel and Roscoe. Did you recorded some shows from that era?
I was there too!!😄
@@ChristoMusic lots of us recorded…wasn’t really discouraged…more so encouraged! In my case, cassette’s just wouldn’t last forever…or lose their way back home after lending…or the dreaded tape spaghetti, unraveled in the player.
Thanks for the answer @@LTJR.
All of these players are monsters; there can be little debate about that. But really, what sets Robben apart, as a writer, a player, a musician and band leader, is that his music has a 'joy' to it; always. That's what I get from being a fan for 3 decades. Thanks Robben. Thanks to all the player he worked with who enabled that, for us to enjoy it. So much love to you all. #robbenford
Peace.
..Yes.. 'joy' sums it up. The search for adventure on the fretboard..without sounding academic...i.e talent!
@@paulwilliams5013 & dedication for this pursuit!
Great interaction between Vinnie and Roscoe. Truly excellent stuff.
Just discovered this. I love Robben's present day playing but there is a youthful fire here that sets it appart. I think its the best I have seen from him, and the band is amazing.
This era of Robben and his band was the perfect blend of blues, jazz, and R&B. The fire of blues and the sophistication of jazz. I was at GIT during that year and I saw all of his concerts. Got to sit in master classes (a 4 guy revolving chair trading licks with Robben in a practice room) and learned so much. I learned as much from watching the way his left hand moved so economically, like a willow branch. He showed us anything we asked about. My guitar sounds like a banjo ahd his sounds like a mountain: "Hear, try mine.." he'd say and you'd switch. Whereupon his guitar/amp in my hands sounded like a banjo and mine sounded like a mountain in his.
@@benrosow7997 THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing this time with him. I hope you sound like a mountain or one climbing one now.
How did I get to see this. I feel blessed.
Thanks so much for posting this - utterly wonderful. Sometimes having this internet thing pays off...
This is gold. Some of the best musical happenings are in small clubs where musical magic happens. What an assembly of talent. Thank you for posting this.
Was there in '81. Saw Robben and Russell at Pasquale's the first day in town - Yellowjackets! Ah those were the days...Robben had his 335 (the one) refinished that year and was using Larry's '60 Tobacco Sunburst. It's still looking brand new here 3 years later...I want this video!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where is Pat Hicks? Howard be gone :-(
I was at this gig. One of the most memorable experiences of my life!
I was there 4 years later, This was in the old building on Hollywood. I saw so much great playing and met people I am still friends with today : )
First of all, I ‘m so surprising about I could meet again to the best moment I ever had. I was there and almost fainted out because of Robben’s blues solos. It was surely most exciting guitar play I ever heard! I’m still digging on Robben’s amaizingly exciting blues style guitar over 35 years. It all started from the show! Thanks so lot for uploading this. If I add one more thing, I had felt fusion kind of tunes are a bit boring comparing to blues gospels tunes. When I found Robben’s albumTALK TO YOUR DAUGHTER was blues direction, I shouted “That’s it!”
By the way the cassette tape TALK TO YOU DAUGHTER was given from Mr. Vinny Colaiuta I happened to sit next to him in the jet plain to Japan. He was on the way to play with Sadao Watanabe. Vinny is so friendly and nice person. Of course I ‘ve been to his concert later in Japan.
Wow! Robben is still great today, but he's on another level here, just sublime. 😃
you have to listen more carefully nowadays to his nuances & songs. There is a lot of great stuff in the 2000's & Robben Ford in his 70's of course will be different than in his younger body. It's his journey in life we enjoy following others he collaborates with.
Roscoe is a beast.

Me too. Where did this ever come from? 1hr 53mins!!
The great Vinnie Colaiuta!
Haven't enjoyed a concert this much in a while.
This would have been about 2 years after I first met Robben when I met him I thought he looked like he was about 14 or 15 years old and to my surprise I think he is actually a couple years older than me he was playing for a Yamaha endorsement at the NAMM show he was on fire that night also a couple of buddy's of mine from the Midwest were attending GIT at the time and they introduced me to him then we all went next door to a really good Mexican restaurant and ate my treat lol...That's when I got to tell Robben that my most favorite song in the world was "North Carolina" and his reply was Really mine too ......and it still remains my favorite all time song
Hi John, thanks for the nice story! Do you have a recording of that Namm show?
i used to have it on cassette cause I recorded it from about the 3rd row in the middle with my Sony Walkman and it came out extremely well but that was a long time ago I will go thru a crate in my garage and see if I can find it
Thank you, that would be great!
john lukehart hi John, did you found this cassette?
I miss how he used to play with so much fire like this, up through the Talk to Your Daughter release !! ♪♫
100% agree
Yup.
I don’t know. I saw him live a couple of weeks ago and he absolutely blew everyone away. He is a fierce player.
@@Elido Indeed Robben is still a badass. Admittedly I'm a bit nostalgic because I still favor the music, tones, and energy Ford created during the Yellowjackets/LA Express/Miles Davis period. That was a special time. But everything must change...
Same feeling here. Now he's arrogant and boring to death!
Class of 87' saw sooooo many great concerts at MI ..& the baked potato!! Good times
This a great band.....first time hearing them
Magic Happens! Dream Show
Great, thanks for posting!! First saw Robben when I attended GIT in 1981- I've been an avid fan ever since! I agree that his style was a little more fiery back then, but I appreciate his evolution over the years into an incredibly refined player, composer, and vocalist (it's amazing to hear what he can sing and play at the same time). Robben and Pat Martino are my top 2, 100 others tied for third.
U said it Rob ... I was back there that year with you .... Robben & Pat were something incredibly amazing (not diminishing any of the other faculty with Ron Eschete Carl Shroeder, Don Mock & the rest) but to find in offices right next to each other where you could go in and ask, listen & play with Pat & then right next door in with Robben ... what a dream for any guitar player to be able to experience ... left an indelible impression as I still am incredibly influenced by Robben ... his growth as a composer & arranger & his Rhythm playing as amazing as his solo playing ... great memories ...
Hey Howard, yes, I remember you from the good ol' wax museum days! It was truly otherworldly to have legendary players just casually hanging out like that (in addition to that incredible staff)- we were really fortunate! Thanks for replying- hope you're still strummin' and having fun!
I was there a couple years before you guys and had the same impression of awe, being able to just go in and play a Yellowjackets tune with Robben in his office hours, then go see Steve Morse or Tommy Tedesco or even Howard Roberts do a set. Larry Carlton was listed as guest instructor but never came my year, tho i was able to see him when he came to do a guest spot at GIT the next year. My continuing love of Robben's playing is what brought me to this page 40 years later. If you guys are not yet hip to 'Jackets tunes of the period Katie, Blondie or Flat Tire, check them out on youtube under the first YJ album (I think they were add-ons to a Japanese reissue). I too have some cassettes I made at Hop Singh's, Ice House and other venues from RF's time with the band, but the quality is bad, sometimes I had to hide the recorder in my shirt pocket and I didn't have a Sony or anything, so...
wow... Robben had the chops even back in the day. saw him at a dive in phila.....starz I believe the club was and it had to be '79 - '80 cause within the same time frame I saw Metheny group at the same venue during 1st tour doin' 1st LP material. have the Metheny show on tape cause it was broadcast on WMMR but kick myself in the ass for not taking a recorder into Robben's show....... lost forever I guess ?
What a team. It was great back then and it is great now !
as a bassist with my owned voice (well earned thru influences along the way), i honor Roscoe for adding his flavor to the ALL TO LARGE SHOES to fill (Jimmy) and the original "Jackets" tunes~~that is one size big-ass gig to fill~~kudos from the foundation~~J,Bruce
And kicking ass on Teen Town too!
Vinnie!!
indeed: VINNIE!!!
Ha! The old building remember it well : )
Caught this lineup with Jimmy Haslip on bass at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano years back - been a Yellowjackets and Robben Ford fan ever since!
I saw this line up around this time at the Ice House in Pasadena with Neil Stubenhaus on
Bass reading a chart that hung over 2 music stands...lol.

I find out them for the first time ... Fantastic musicians !!
I've been a fan of Robben and Russ since RF's "Inside Story" in '79 and Yellowjackets in '80; still have the vinyl!. But watching this generates a whole new level of respect. Robben on Call of the Wild at 1:10:27 mark and the lines on Teen Town omg... just killer.... Makes you want to put your instrument down and dig 4 master craftsmen at work. Awesome to watch and listen to this. Thanks for uploading!
12:43 Vinnie "carving it up" in musicians' parlance.
Omg, great band, great gig!
I think you can safely refer to them as a supergroup of sorts. I saw Robben in '74 or so on tour with Joni Mitchell and now this is roughly 10 years later. I just saw him again this past January so it marks a gap of about 46 years between concerts, hard to believe he has been so great for so long
Thanks for posting this - I saw Robben with Vinnie on drums at Hop Singh's around this time. Not even old enough to drink. Couple of guys calling themselves The Hedgecutters opened. Onen of them told my friend and I to get out of the 'artist's lounge'. Ha. Good times.
I was there!...Can't believe it has been taped.. Wow Thanx a lot guys!

+JJ JJ Yep
this was just before talk to Ur daughter was out. saw this unit in Las Vegas the following year after talk release! was one of the most smoken musical experiences of my life!!!!!!!was in a small club 2 sets blew the roof off and knocked the walls down!!!!!
+Yvan Ackermann Yvan.. Did you take any pictures of Howard Roberts playing at GIT ?
Unfortunately no..
Was there, what an amazing time at GIT. I saw this band multiple times around LA as Robben was trying to secure a deal. Then Miles called. TTYD was 2 years later.
Hi Ian, do you have Robben's recordings from that era?

I loved his music many, many, many years and now that I get to hear it again - I fall in love again straight all over again. Robben you have always been so unique! And the group you put together was also so unique. But most unique is your comment on playing with Kiss: "Glad it was a studio gig otherwise I would had to wear black leather and that' s nothing I am really into
Wow, what a great find. Used to listen to Robben with these guys at At My Place and Hop Singh's in the middle 80's. So much great music, and I agree, Robben has always been great, but his club gigs were the best. I missed that "strat through a compressor" tone he had during that time.
I posted a Hop Singh's audio recording ua-cam.com/video/VLSUr4ezy4o/v-deo.html

Jesus fn mary josef! All onfire. Ford has had the buddhism come into his field. I love this edgy sound though! I'm floored by these players. It's a good place to be standing on their shoulders. Thankyou Brother s

Infidel14? Is it a fender Stratocaster?
@@davidseriff711 I think so. But I don't think its the Strat he used when he worked with the Yellowjackets and Miles Davis. I'd also be curious to know more about the guitars, amps, and effect Robben used, because he was burning on this gig!
@@catboyzee you're right, the strat he used with miles was white. As for his amp on this gig, this was 1984 so I think he has his Dumble by this time, not sure. I read in an interview that before the Dumble he was having trouble finding an amp he really liked, he was trying Yamahas and Mesa Boogies. I also know at this time he used, an Ernie Ball volume pedal and a TC Electronic chorus pedal. I am a Robben expert, any questions, send them my way 😁
@@davidseriff711 That's interesting, because I thought Robben Ford used a sunburst Strat when he was with Miles. I do know that Michael Stern used a White Strat during his tenure with Davis during the early 1980s but it eventually got stolen, and he ended up switching over to using Tele-styled guitars. Thanks for the insight.
@@catboyzee you're right, he did use a sunburst strat with miles, I just looked at the video,, my bad .
I remember seeing Robben’s 1958 dot neck 335 at Torres Guitar Repair in Los Gatos CA back in 92. It was refinished in a 3 tone sunburst (bummer). The owner of the store at the time said his friend bought it from Robben and had the refin done there. Wonder where it is today?
Michael Angel what is the other guitar robben is playing in this video?
@@davidseriff711 Yes, this looks like Robben’s ‘58 335 in this performance before he sold it. It has the longer pick guard. You can see Robben playing this 335 (also on UA-cam) with Yellowjackets Casino Lights Montreux Jazz Festival 1981.:)
