Pretty much a toss-up. A lot of it comes down to preference. With Harley, gotta give a huge edge to aftermarket and dealer network. Both great bikes. It’s pretty much a tie.
For some people the whole point of riding is to be away from all that electronic stuff. I’ll just throw my phone on my handlebars if I need navigation. I do think Harley should make a nice digital gauge for the big bikes and make it an option. Harley is behind on some things that it is really time for them to catch up on, and the new sportster are a good start. That RevMax can compete with or beat anything that’s out there in that class of bikes. So HD can for sure do it if they want!
I love my dyna but Indian has knocked this bike out of the park for a stock factory bike. Personally, I'm glad that the chief doesn't have the 90-degree air filter and the bigger mini fairing. As far as dealerships go, I've been broken down twice on my Harley and there wasn't a dealership around for miles and Harley is shutting down their smaller dealerships all over. There isn't a single Harley dealership between Denver and Kansas City now. Now the bike that I am super excited about is the new Buell Super Crusier. If they produce that bike similar to what they built as a demo it will be my next bike. Nice video!
The SC may get a slight edge on suspension with that Fox setup, but the mono shock on the 18-up Softail is really good. One of the best frames HD has ever put out. The screen is cool and I wish HD would at least make that an option but not everyone wants digital, for some the idea of riding is get away from all that and HD always rides a fine line respecting what it’s customers want and getting caught up to others as far as tech.
I was all set to buy a Lowrider S in 2021.....and then Indian came out with the Chief DarkHorse. I bought the Indian because it was a newer design, had that awesome TFT display with navigation, was less common, handled like a dream, had ride modes and was cheaper+ I got a $500 loyalty bonus, etc etc etc. I would have been happy with the Lowrider S too, but I didn't want to be held hostage by the warranty, have to deal with corny salesmen and ring a bell for their web page and so on. The bike itself is amazing though.
Thanks Chad. Just FYI: you're under the same restrictions with a Indian warranty as you are with an HD warranty. RIde safe. That's why I don't get any extended warranties.
@@RyanUrlacher On October 2022 The FTC sued Harley-Davidson LLC for illegally restricting customers’ right to repair their purchased products. The complaints charge that the companies’ warranties included terms that conveyed the warranty is void if customers use independent dealers for parts or repairs. The FTC ordered the company to fix warranties by removing illegal terms and recognizing the right to repair......I don't think this should be "news" to any of us in the motorcycle community. They are also known to trash $300 optima batteries in customers bikes and replace them with HD branded generic batteries at premium prices in order to "stay in compliance" with the warranty. They do the same with spark plugs. It's just a sleazy way to overcharge the customer. I have a brother who had catastrophic engine failure on his 2018 Street Glide that was 3 weeks out of warranty and HD wouldn't work with him at all, even though they KNEW about the oil sumping issue. HD loyalists have a form of Stockholm Syndrome, where they continuously get taxed, penalized, berated and insulted but just keep coming back for more. 🤔
I would argue that the screen on the Sport Chief is a great bonus. As someone who has destroyed 2 cameras on two phone due to vibration on my HD (with dampeners) and who as installed a small wireless Android Auto/CarPlay unit now, I much prefer not to have to even have to take my phone out of my pocket. If they come up with a way to mount the screen to the top of the risers, that's even better. Ride modes are extremely useful for someone like me who is an every day rider. I live in Texas and unless there is snow or ice on the road, I ride. Having a way to lessen throttle response ala tour mode in the rain is extremely beneficial. That being said, I would be hard pressed to buy another Indian. I was not happy with fit and finish on my Challenger. If looked like a 5 year old painted it in some parts and a toddler assembled it. Just overall not happy. The dealer support would be the second issue. I know I can usually find a dealer no matter where I am in the US within 50-100 miles, even in the sticks. Just not the case with Indian. What I would like to see with next years Low Rider S and ST is the Sportster S gauge option. I can't imaging it would be difficult to set up for other HD's, especially the softail line. I'd gladly pay 800-1000 for that gauge.
You’re right, a digital gauge should at least be an option. Not everyone wants it because for some the idea of riding is to get away from all that. And you are right, nothing looks like a Harley. I’ve heard several talk about lackluster paint and other things on Indians. HD does need to catch up on things like ride modes, though they do have that optional RDRS I think they call it that sorta does the same thing.
@@mickeygaines007 exactly. Options would be great. I'd love to see something like what you can do with 4 wheels, where you can get packages ordered through the dealer. An option to swap the stock suspension with upgraded suspension. I want to order an FXLRS with a 117/124/128/131/135, upgraded suspension, 6/8/10 inch risers, digital gauge with navigation and ride modes etc and I'm only paying the difference in price and not on top of new.
@@Jermz1979 yeah be able to get your bike the way you want it right away without paying straight price for the upgrade and having stock parts all over your garage!
@@mickeygaines007 all covered under warranty. I'd be less apt to break my warranty if I could get a 124/128 for $500 more rather than a 114/117 and have to go with a non OEM stage 2 to get the performance I want stock. Similar to cars that have the 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder option.
Enjoyed the review and comments. I too wouldn't kick an Indian out of my garage but have not had the opportunity to own one yet. You did say one thing though that hit me like a slap in the face. Claiming Jochen Zeitz is hitting the mark as CEO of Harley is utterly laughable. Nothing could be further from the truth. Proof? Sure... BRONX. A true cutting edge bike that goes head to head with every other motorcycle manufacturer out there and would pull thousands into the Harley fold, yet, under Jochen Zeitz leadership they sit on the release. This is not only a clear cut gaff and a perfect example of tone deaf leadership but nothing short of fiduciary suicide. As so many Harley owners age out of the market Harley does not open up the brand to a new group of riders, instead opting to double down on trikes and touring bikes that are far too expensive for young riders. Truly sad and nothing but a short sighted focus on profits in the here and now at the expense of the companies long term future.
Exactly how CEO Alan Joyce drove Australia’s premier airline, qantas, into the ground. Overcharging the remaining loyal customers, delaying fleet modernisation, and outsourcing maintenance, to create a short term profit boom to go out on. Same behaviour which has near on ruined two internationally huge and once proud companies…. :-(
Too bad HD doesn’t sell at MSRP. They want $26,000 for a 2023 fat Bob at the Pensacola HD dealer and MSRP is under $19,000. The Indian dealer across the street will go below MSRP. Indian makes a better product, less accessories unfortunately, but not so bad that buying a Harley would be worth it
I am with you on this method. I just knew I was going to love the HD Lowrider S, but 1.5 seconds into a demo ride and I knew it was not a fit for me. I rode the Indian Chief Bobber Dark Horse and didn't want to get off of it. I thought I would like the Sportster S but one demo ride later I would rather ride the Indian Scout. Let your tailbone tell you what you love, not specs or talking heads.
You have good points Ryan. When I want information that isn't apparent from a gun manufacturer I can browse different firearm channels. I'm not watching a gun channel that only showcases H&K or S&W, I am watching channels that have their hands on everything and can give me perspectives like "the grip angle is identical to Glock 19, but it feels more natural and less boxy in your hand". Those are the kind of 2wheel channels that I try to watch as well, but with only a few exceptions one manufacturer gets behind a channel and the other cant touch it. (I am sure its due to some closed door contracts like "we will give you some free parts and give you a long term loaner but you commit not to accept similar offers from any other manufacturer")
What I like about Indian is there colors, specifically the matte ones. There will be bikes I see online that don’t catch my eye, but when I see them in person, I’m blown away. An example would be the ‘24 Chief dark horse in “sandstone smoke.” Overall, I want to see more matte color options from both
As an Indian owner.. I would love to see them use guys like you to do more reviews and promotions.. You are honest and pull no punches.. on EITHER brand. BTW.. looking forward to seeing you here in Milwaukee for the rally.. PLEASE try and make to the West Bend dealer over the weekend, I will be there with the American Legion Riders raffling off a 2023 street glide. Stay safe and ride free.
I saw the Chief last Thursday that a guy was riding the demo from the dealership he works at. He had one for himself on the way. Definitely a nice bike. Accessories will be coming soon. In comparison to the H-D it’s a contender but here’s my take, You can’t beat H-D’s massive dealer network. Having that in my back pocket if I’m wherever with my Harley is just plain peace of mind. Indian is coming up but there not the dealer network that H-D is. On the flip side as far as products, The Indian Scout nails the sporty segment where H-D made a big boo-boo with dropping the Sportster. The new H-D SportsterS and nightster looks way too plastic for my tastes. Different strokes, different folks I guess.
There’s absolutely no reason for either manufacturer to skimp on LED lighting. They’re cheaper and much more appealing overall. The lack of a dedicated, large brake light is definitely a safety concern. Minor thing’s really but that’s what separates each.
On a chief bobber dark horse. Not the exact same model but has some of the same features as the sport chief. Love it. Low center of gravity makes it easy to throw around and maneuver; pretty standard across cruisers but there's something about the dimensions of the bike that fit better to my frame. The ride modes are interesting; definite differences in throttle response between tour, standard, and sport modes. Not sure how much it changes actual performance numbers. Might be more of an individual preference thing. Definitely noticed difference in fuel consumption between the different ride modes. The 4 inch ride command provides good information on the vehicle itself during the ride. I found it user friendly and easy to connect to my phone and headphones. The navigation feature works well. However, I've noticed on longer rides, depending on region and coverage, it may take longer for the GPS to acquire the satellite and provide navigation service. All in all, great bike, super smooth, and in the past 10,000 miles has been very reliable and enjoyable.
at The One Show I test rode the Indian Sport Chief and the Indian Scout Rogue and it was an easy choice between those two for me. To use football analogies the Chief was a linebacker and the Scout was a quarterback. If motorcycles are about the thump the sport chief has it and if it's about nimble performance the Scout's the ride. I was surprised at how much heat came off the engine at stops on the chief, in late April (Portland Oregon), making me think it'd be torturous in the heat of summer for any kind of stop and go or slow speed travel. My impression of the Scout was that in the show room it seems like a tiny bike but on the road it fits like a glove and does exactly what I ask of it at every command. I also test rode the Yamaha Bolt because I thought those were interesting and comparing the Bolt to the Scout I'd say that the Bolt feels much more like a beginners bike and in order to even consider it over the Scout it'd have to be less than half the cost of the Scout, which could lead me into a decision based on money that I'd always regret.
Why does Harley persist with chain primary drive ? Is it just for the aesthetic appearance of the chain case ? Surely, no maintenance gears like Indian uses has to be the better choice. Both use hydraulic tappets, which is good.
Just came across your channel, very Detailed review and honest 👍. Your spot on, competition is good for everyone, havin riden nearly 170.000klms on 2 different Indians but still love to see all brands. Look forward to your vids.. Cheers from downunder.
Great job Ryan. Looking at both of theses bikes for a near future purchase and this was certainly helpful and informative. On the Indian option for a passenger seat and foot pegs, according to Indian's web site they are available. If you select the Sport Chief and then go into the build section they are there. The pegs are $199 and there are several seat options with the price varying depending on what type you choose. Indian really needs to step up the availability of their bikes at the dealer level. I have been looking for a chief dark horse for almost two months now and no luck. I have been to four different Indian dealers within a hundred miles and nothing. Lots of scouts but zero chief dark horses, I know the sport chief has just been released but if it follows in the current chief availability pattern...well it may be a Harley instead of the Indian. Keep em coming!
I have always thought the Low Rider S was ugly and never understood the allure. The Sport Cheif looks great and that 116 with the better suspension and changes has my dollars.
The low rider s was one of my fav bikes. I truly regret getting rid of it. However, after the pan am, they started marking up bikes like crazy. A low rider s started at 25k and Harley interest at 7%. This led me to Indian. I now own a Ftr carbon 1200 and omg that bike is fun and a rogue which I consider a low rider s mini. This bike here maybe next in the saddle as I have moved on to Indian from Harley.
I have a ISB twenty, with just intake, exhaust and tune it whoops up on my buddies LRS with the same. Unfortunately the lean angle with low exhaust and stock pirelli dual sport tires kills it's handling compared to the LRS. Seems the MSRP is what the Indians are selling at vs Harley has definitely marked up their bikes. One good thing is all the dealers you can haggle to get a better deal on your purchase.
I know this is a year old, but just showed up on my feed, and wow have to say that Indian motorcycle is so gorgeous, beautiful motorcycle. Those Indians are some great looking bikes.
I have to give Indian a lot of props for the upgrades. Indian wins in almost every way compared to the Low Rider S just based on what we can see at this point. Once we can ride the Sport Chief it might be a different story
Nah it’s a toss up depending on what you like. The LRS already has an air cleaner that is ready for any upgrade you want to do. Dealer network and aftermarket. Overall finish and build quality. I like the Fox shocks on the SC but that 2018-present Softail mono shock frame is really good. The gauge and ride modes are the only decisive win I’ll give the SC.
Yes and no.. it does pick up on that market, but Harley guys will just go soft tail..all kinds of bikes could be called Dyna knock offs... Even if they were around before the Dyna and it predecessor the FXR
@Truckin Biker yah but there's only two options that will cut it for a dyna replacement...this indian sport chief and the buell super cruiser that won't hit the street till 25'. I honestly don't think pure dyna guys want to switch to.the softail as it can't serve as a stunt bike like most of them guys build out dynas to be. I stick w my flhx. I just see indian saying we got a dyna for you guys that hatley abandoned. And buell super cruiser 170+hp
@@TheReal-Sloaner yeah I can definitely see your point there, I think the Buell is gonna be the better option there.. but at the same time, can't blame either company for seeing a niche in the market and going after it..
By the way Harley Davidson is not nailing it at anything. The company has repeatedly seen losses every quarter and is dying a slow death by failing to attract any new customers.
@@RyanUrlacher you’re probably right. I just didn’t expect to hear that because it seems like HD are really struggling to get things right. As far as new designs go, and getting new customers.
As far as the price go's I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and can tell you that no Harley dealer is selling any bikes at or below MSRP. The Harley dealers have dealer mark ups over MSRP from 5K and up depending on the model. The near by Indian dealer said they will not have mark ups over MSRP. I saw a low rider ST at a local dealer and the price tag was 32k before tax and license, WFT?
G'day Ryan. Thanks for this particular comparison discussion regarding the Indian Sport Chief and the Harley Davidson Low Rider S. I was hoping to buy a Sport Glide for my 65th birthday (first ever Harley), but Harley has deemed that it should go the way of the Dodo!! Why? I may be lucky here in Australia to be able to grab one, but we will see. If that does not eventuate, I will be looking at either the Sport Chief, or the Low Rider ST. Next video I will be watching is your "real world review" of the LR ST. Thanks again brother, really appreciate it and am impressed with your channel.
I just rode the Indian sport chief at the Daytona, international Speedway, demo rides and bike week. It’s a fun little bike but the FTR 1200 is really fun and the Challenger is a great bagger so is the roadmaster.

I think harley has a huge stockpile of incandescent bulbs they are trying to use up. When they run out sometime in 2045 they will finally upgrade to LED turn signals! 😂😂😂
@@RyanUrlacher if you go on the Indian site and build the bike there, the 2-up and passenger pegs have been there for at least a week. Not sure why it wouldn't show up on the digital catalog. It's the same parts and part numbers for the rest of the Chiefs. Kinda like how you can swap a Street Bob seat with a Softail Standard and Slim, you can do that with the Chief line as well
I can’t get any information on why the 116 in the Roadmaster is rated at 126tq and the Chief is rated at 120tq. Anyone have any idea or information on why this is?
I'd love to buy an Indian sport chief but dealer stores are like a 4 day ride from where I'm from (southern Philippines mindanao to northern Philippines Luzon) while harley davidson dealership stores are roughly a 6 hour ride, but imho both are super nice looking
Im just not an hd fan at all, im a triumph guy and i would choose the indian cuz i dont care for hd style but hd culture is another reason ide choose the indian. Otherwise they are really close
If Indian really wanted to make the decision difficult, they should have brought all this to the game at $17k, $17,500. I don’t see them hurting LRS sells to any appreciable level when coming in at the exact same price point. Not the best move, imo. At this rate, it just looks like a LRS “chief” option for Indian riders.
Don’t forget the $750 surcharge that Harley adds. This was supposed to be temporary to offset supply chain issues but is not going away. I also thinks it’s a bit of a sneaky way to keep msrp numbers lower than what they actually are.
As far as the advertising and audience. You’re right and to further that point, I own a 2023 HD Fat Bob and I’m looking for a bagger also. And I want an Indian so reviews, lots of reviews, would be nice on this channel and across the UA-cam platform.
Most real bikers are tolerant of all brands and types of bikes. Indian motorcycles worry me a lot as they come and go like the wind. They also claim a heritage that is very questionable at best. Given how quickly Polaris dumped their last brand of motorcycles and started Indian, I wonder if things get tough just how long Indian will be around. If I am going to put down that kind of money, I want a company with a track record. Service parts and accessories are important. I am going home with the motorcycle that bought me to the dance!!!
You bring up a good point on a question I had with whether or not they would be around long enough when I was making my purchase decisions on new bikes three years ago. I put my money on Polaris keeping the brand alive and have purchased to Indian motorcycles😎. As a rider that started on Harleys over 20 years ago and still owns three, I am a Harley guy that puts credit into the heritage of Indian Motorcycle and the 1901 stamped into every bike; I don't think I am alone in that regard--- As for the revieq on the Sport Chief, it's a good review, although I would expect any objective observer to be able to see the Harley bias despite the, as someone put it, sanctimonious disclaimer🤷♂. That in the end doesn't really matter as to whether the reviewer was bias or not---it was a good video and consumers that both watch and don't watch this can make up their own minds on preference. I think both are good bike and good-looking bikes---if I had the money, I would probably go with the Sport Chief...
Once Polaris owned the Indian brand it only made sense to drop Victory in favor of a brand name most everyone has heard of. No sense in competing with yourself. An awful lot of bikers never heard of Victory in the early years or if the did they didn't pay much attention to the brand. Indian was a well known rival to Harley since the early 1900's and that rivalry has been renewed today with American Flattrack & Battle of the baggers racing, As we are seeing Indian is introducing new models squarely aimed at Harley to keep the rivalry going on the showroom floor. BTW, Polaris didn't leave Victory owners high and dry, your can get Victory parts and service at any Indian dealer.
@Amazing Red Kitty not to mention victory had a super reliable and good engine, the thing that didn't quite catch on was their thinking outside the norm styling. Indian has more of a classic style and will catch on much better than victory ever did. There are alot of people that would've owned a victory had they not been a little too far detached from that classic style look and feel. Harley has also stabbed themselves in the foot many many times by releasing new bikes only to be recalled for major issues...if they're recalled at all and not left for the customer to deal with on their own. ie...07-09 compensator and the milwaukee 8 oil sumping. Not to mention the lawsuit over them denying warranty coverage which was completely illegal to do so. It left quite a sour taste for many many people. It's different when you don't have much competition in your segment but with Indian joining them in the ring...it makes the move away from Harley that much more palatable
@@PitbullSoco All you've said about Harley is true and I'm glad you posted it. Harley tends to make engines with some sort of problem that appears after the warranty has expired then they offer an "up grade kit" to cure their mistake at the owners expense. I had a Sportster a couple of bikes ago, when my Heritage got too big for me I bought an Indian Scout. The Scout is 10 times more fun that the Sportster ever was, don't get me wrong is a good bike, but its 30 years behind the times. I took 2 of my Harley owning friends to an Indian Demo ride, 3 hours later 2 new Indian Challengers rolled out the door and two more Harleys were added to the 15 other Harleys in the used bike section.
I think the Indian Sport Chief has the proportions and silhouette over Harley's LR S . However, only a back to back extensive test ride on various roads (plu a closed circuit) will give a better reflection on the differences rather than a spec sheet. You can gauge so much by numbers but it's the seat of the pants impression that sells bikes. I ride a Street Bob 114 and absolutely love the thing. Coming from all types of performance bikes I still don't think it "need" any enhancing or upgrading. Sure you can knit pick just about anything but essentially, for road use it's more than enough in every area... The only bike I feel could have me (foolishly) trade or sell would be Buell's very desirable and very cool Super Cruiser 😬.
Good video. But I think you may want to look into Indian's 4" ride command display. You said it was useless due to limited capabilities. I disagree. It has GPS map, Bluetooth for phone, music, headset, all the bikes functions are accessible and easy to manipulate such as switching ride modes etc. I have the same display on my Super Chief Limited and feel spoiled compared to what all of my old bikes had to offer. Ride safe and enjoy the ride.✌️
I have a 2015 HD xg750 I really want a bigger bike specially for touring long and short distances and these two bikes intrigued me but would the air cooled engine be any trouble specially in busy city ?
1. Regarding that “severe” shock angle! Am I wrong by thinking that the shocks instead of compressing are just ( well, compressing to some degree) “pivoting” just like swing arm ! ( that’s what it appears like, looking at shock angle) 🤔 2. Of all the reviews, nobody ever mentioned that front brakes are ( not just dual calipers, but …) radial mount ! 🧐☝️ ( even though it’s not a sport bike, doesn’t it still matter?! ) Advantage Indian 🤔
There is no increase in braking power with a radial setup versus a conventional rig. Rather, the lack of torsional flexing (lateral movement) means crisper-feeling brakes at the lever. Not sure most riders would be able to tell if they didn't know. IMO
I think it’s a great comparison that you did as the bikes are so very similar from two different manufactures. I actually really like the Indian sport chief, however, the aftermarket doesn’t support chief nowhere near as much as it does Harley Davison. That’s one of the main things stopping me from purchasing an Indian over a Harley is the aftermarket support such as exhaust systems, the factory exhaust system on the Indian sport, chief, and other bikes, or not aesthetically pleasing.
Hey Ryan, I just found your channel. I'm hopefully going to be in the market for a cruiser within the next year or two. So I wanted to compare both bikes. And I do agree with you on most things when it comes to Harley vs Indian. However, there's one thing you forgot to mention unless I missed it, and that's the cruise control. The Low Rider S does come with it. However, for $252.00, you can get that feature. On the Indian sport chief, the cruise control is standard. Just wanted to point out that. I also agree with you on the lights as well. How is it that Harley charges you that much money yet doesn't give cruise control Standard or LED lights all around. I also agree that the high flow intake Indian should include that as standard. It just comes down to both brands. I want to nickel and dime you to get more $$$ out of you. As for more dealerships, please, that's a no-brainer. Harley easily wins there. However, I have noticed that Harley has started to shut down some of their low performer dealerships along with dealerships that have corruption in there. ( If you can't be honest with the customers about products you're selling, then you shouldn't be allowed to sell their products simply put). I really hope that in the future, Polaris steps up and starts building more dealerships. For me, I'm still split on which bike I like the most. However, I'm leaning more towards Indian. It seems like they offer a bit more bang for your buck in a way. Also, my local Harley dealership while the guys are awesome they do come off a bit pushy, which I'm not a fan of. Meanwhile, the Indian dealership, which is literally across the street from Harley they seem a bit more chill and won't nag you. I will say that if I had to consider a Indian Scout vs. the new Nightster S no competition there the Nightster S is in my opinion a better option. It's got more features it has more rider aids than Scout, and for a new rider like me who is still learning, that's a boon. Also, Nightster S has one thing that Scout doesn't have. A freaking fuel Guage. Come on Indian you sell your bikes at about the same price as a Nightster S, and yet they don't have a fuel Guage. 😔😔. So, the Nightster S is my top pick. However, the other 2 are a toss-up. Only time will tell which one I pick. Ok, I'm done with my rant. Peace out, Ryan. I look forward to seeing more of your videos
As you say Ryan, competition is good. Personally I believe that Indian are kicking arse .Fresh ideas can't be a bad thing.. Obviously victims of the Harry Davidson clothing company propaganda machine will never remove their blinkers.luvlee jublee
Nice comparison.. can u do an eval of the 2022 street glide st? And a similar other maker bike? I had a 2016 low rider s and it was a great looking and riding bike ... but I traded in for a 2022 street glide st an have only 450 miles on it as I got it in June and I live in New England and have to store it in the cold and inclement weather we have hear and am anxiously awaited better weather soon to get back on it
I truly enjoyed the video and information. Do you have a comparison of the baggers? I almost bought an Indian instead of my 2021 Street Glide Special but I could not get a demo ride on an Indian. Totally opposite at any Harley dealership. This year at Arizona bike week I will be trying out all the Indian models. They look awesome. Thx for making content for us motorcycle riders and enthusiast. God bless 🇺🇲 🌵🏜️ I just subscribed great channel
Doesn’t the Harley have two-piston, axial mounted calipers up front on smaller rotors? Because you said they were neck-and-neck on braking? The Indian, afaik has four-piston, radial mounted Brembos on bigger discs. I don’t know about the feel of the two irl, but on paper that is no contest.
I like the indian bikes, probably the ftr the most. But theres something intangible about harleys that makes them more attractive to me overall. I could point out individual things on both brands that I think are cooler or better than the other, but for some reason when you put it all together, the harleys just have an x factor that i dont get from the Indians.
Excellent review, Ryan, as is your custom. I could live with either bike but I give the H-D the nod here because fit and finish is better (IMO), better chassis and more powerful engine (however slight). Plus there is a vast Harley dealer network in North America. I'm not ready to ditch my RGS yet though:) I hope Indain continues to pressure H-D and that H-D continues to rise to the occasion. Competition is good for us!
I guess you're right. Must be the case the Indian Sport Chief has more power and handles better than the low rider s. If you say so. I've not ridden either
Both motorcycles are Amazing, but I stand with The Awesome Harley Davidson Softail Low Rider S because my favorite motorcycle has always been The Spectacular Harley Davidson motorcycles, Great video And explanation as well Thanks for sharing!!!
Ive ridden both and the seating position is definitely more comfortable on the Indian. The Indian sport chief I rode had the optional 10” risers which I highly recommend and likely has something to do with the comfort level. The biggest difference was the seat-to-peg distance. I felt like my knees and hips were at too tight of an angle to be comfortable for a long ride. The Indian kept my hips and knees at a more relaxed angle which I really enjoyed and would be more comfortable for a longer time. I did not like the “lag time” in the fly-by-wire throttle on the Indian. It seemed somewhat disconnected from the engine and didn’t have that immediate response that a cable would have. I’ve ridden other bikes with fly-by-wire throttles but the Indian sport seemed the most disconnected I’ve experienced.
I like Indian bikes, but I am mostly a Harley-Davidson guy…. I do wish Harley would step up the tech .. I have the lowrider st , I love it, but I wish the fairing had all the tech that the RG and SG have.. so you get those benefits yet a Softail frame… And I agree about lighting
I Must admit that I’d love the rider traction and Advanced ABS features. The features „leaked“ of the new CVO model where they’ve added the rev max electronics to them makes me curious. Will they filter down to all Milwaukee 8 models?
I'm always coming back to South Park with Harley riders! Indian does not have a stock super load exhaust. I'm guessing many just go buy Harley for the sound ;) I'm leaning hard towards New Super Chief, over a RoadKing Special. Honestly, the Chief offers a better engine IMHO, Looks better and 2k-3k less!!! In all cases, man, 21-25k a new cruiser? Neither are really touring bikes, and unlikely I'm going to ride more than 2 hours in any given day. It's funny, because honestly, you go look at the Honda Rebel 1100 Limited at 11,500 BRAND NEW automatic trans, Abs, If you didn't mind the lack of impressive exhaust sound, it really is hard to justify the two big American bike prices! We pay so much more for the American Classic bike look! We all know Honda will outlast both these bikes at half the price! Heck, I have a 2001 Vstar 1100. Only thing it needs for this riding season will be new tires and oil change, LOL. I paid 2k for it and it's showroom new looking!
I've got no experience with Indian as far as dealers or prices. But I will say this. I've priced out a few Harleys that I'm interested in and have always been turned off by the out the door price. I currently ride a small motorcycle, Moto Guzzi V7 850. The motorcycle MSRP was $9199. When I bought it I was charged a destination fee and nothing else. No dealer markup, no assembly fee, no motorcycle diagnostic fee and no fee for add on parts I didn't like. I was also given a $500 veteran discount. The MSRPs on a Low Rider S, Pan America and Low Rider ST at the three local dealerships I went to were not even an option. The amount of fees Harley dealerships tack on is outrageous. I love the dealer network thst Harley has, but if you can't get the bike for a reasonable price what does it matter?
Thank you for this video. I deduced in your first segment that your decision came from your loyalty to HD; you declared HD a winner by having virtually the same power and torque as the Indian, but when Indian had greater travel distance than HD (albeit an insignificant amount), you merely ignored that and repeated the technique regarding the braking rotors. You concluded by noting the availability of locations: HD is now closing places as their stock is taking a hit, perhaps due to their DEI focus. Sean Strickland & others are beginning to publicize HD CEO, Jochen Zeitz's foreign, globalist agenda.
Never seen one of your videos. Thanks for the information, my only constructive criticism would be less shilling your own channel, merch, podcast, asking for comments/likes etc. so hard during your video reviews. Let your content speak for itself and people will naturally flock to these things. Also, maybe consider a less script heavy video. Comes off a bit robotic and even rushed. Just my worthless $0.02 cents. Still a good video.
Nice vid and comparison. The Indian is an absolute beauty. Dont get me wrong I love my 01' Heritage Springer but Harley to me seems to be a tad bit stale in the styling dept. Where as Indian is taking old school design and giving it a modern flavor that just sets it apart. But what do I know.
Indian needs a bigger tank and the performance air intake. Harley needs led and abs standard. Both bikes are nice but performance upgrades are more limited on the indian, lloydz which is awesome. Harley has a number of build options zippers being my first choice probably. I’m riding a Chieftain and the bike is awesome! The only change I would make is a cam or 121 big bore😎
Less Tech Low Rider S wins for me. that is if can can find a dealer that has one because most load up on that . 2018 I bought a Kawasaki zed 900 naked it was 14 pounds leass than the 2019 and beyond. it was hard to find back then, and she is a keeper. on month untill I finally have the cash for a life time dream of a NEW HD , I had 4 older used Sportsers because that was all I could afford. still I will will rider a chief the dark horse... the Harley I really want the Break out but, I think its about 3 thousand more than I have and I refuse to trade my Zed or finance. Thank you for the comparison.👍
i just purchased my first Harley Street Glide i almost went for the Indian scout then the Lowrider s but ended up getting the Street Glide Harley has a better name but my opinion Indian motorcycles are not bad i would consider maybe purchasing one laterdown the line
Can’t really give a decisive win to either. Both are great and it just comes down to what is important to you. The 1 CI more the LRS has isn’t going to be noticeable, so can’t call that a win. I’ll give the Harley the nod on the air cleaner, ability to customize, and dealer network. The SC gets a decisive win in tech, but not everyone wants a digital gauge so that isn’t a win to some. SC does have the Fox shocks but that 2018-present Softail mono shock frame is no joke either. Tough to call a winner there. Both awesome bikes and about the same price if you make everything more less the same.
I blew my Indian scout sixty transmission 3rd gear ⚙️ in 3500mi been in the shop 2 mos. I do ride it like a dirtbike I ride almost allll bikes like a dirt bike. I grew up on them.
As a 22 chief owner with custom ohlins shocks, I’m still having regrets buying a chief because of the low rider S mono shock. My buddy has one and we swapped bikes riding around the salton sea and my suspension can’t compete 😢
The biggest difference is sport chief can be ridden right out the factory without handlebar / riser , footpegs , suspension and seat upgrades. Straight away you save 1000s . There is no Harley-Davidson bike that can be ridden more than 30-45mins in factory setup.
Harley crap shocks vs Fox shocks...no comparison there lol. Weights are never what they claim anyway so that's mute. Ride modes vs none. Standard ABS vs optional. If you want better shocks...chock up another $1000 on the sticker of the Lowrider.
Why f you want race track brakes is street riding out of your league! Riding in wet weather knowing which gear to use and how much throttle is needed beyond your capabilities. Obviously that's why you need ride mode's!
@@alancrane4693 I've been riding for 25 years. I am an every day rider in Texas except for the rare occasions we get ice. For you to sit there and say ride modes aren't beneficial to literally everyone in rough weather is disingenuous AF. I own multiple Harleys and I have tunes on my power visions just to lessen throttle response when I'm traveling for extended amounts of time in the rain. Better brakes aren't a crutch either, only a wannabe would ever complain about increased braking capabilities.

Hey man I like any unbiased review.
I have ridden HD. All my life, and I do know that the are not the the only quality bikes out there.
The Indian wins on almost everything. I love the frame tube design too. They crush it with tech and better Brembos. FYI, I own a harley.
It's a really nice bike, I'm having a tough time deciding between this and the Low Rider as my next bike lol
Pretty much a toss-up. A lot of it comes down to preference. With Harley, gotta give a huge edge to aftermarket and dealer network. Both great bikes. It’s pretty much a tie.
@@tomoates8568 if you want a smartphone with wheels then Indian for you
Stick a stage 4 and carburettor in your Harley and don't like that then yeah get smartphone on wheels 🥱
Love those Indian motorcycles!
They just keep getting better and better 👍
Yes they are!
Nice video!
Great review! I'm a Harley guy, but prefer the twin shocks of the Indian and that info screen is damn cool!
@@mickeygaines007 good points!
Wouldn’t the twin shocks give you a ‘Dyna death wobble?’
@@dylancoric1194 I've owned my 2015 Dyna for 3+ years and never experienced that.
@@RJSerp what type of Dyna do you have? A streetbob? Lowrider S?
I was all set to buy a Lowrider S in 2021.....and then Indian came out with the Chief DarkHorse. I bought the Indian because it was a newer design, had that awesome TFT display with navigation, was less common, handled like a dream, had ride modes and was cheaper+ I got a $500 loyalty bonus, etc etc etc.
I would have been happy with the Lowrider S too, but I didn't want to be held hostage by the warranty, have to deal with corny salesmen and ring a bell for their web page and so on. The bike itself is amazing though.
Why is the Indian warranty different from the HD warranty?
@@billh4301 my thoughts also
Thanks Chad.
@@BlackbirdSSREasy. Switch to Indian or Triumph and never look back ! :-)
Thanks for the comments.
I dig the Indian a lot more than I ever thought I would. Both great looking bikes. Love to ride them both.
You and me both!
Indian makes a better product, less accessories unfortunately, but not so bad that buying a Harley would be worth it
Ride them both and see which one fits you. That's how I chose my road glide limited over the roadmaster limited.
Roadmaster doesn't compete with the road glide the pursuit does and it murders the road glide!
@@MikeMFnJones1 they did not have the pursuit in 21. I did ride the challenger and liked the roadmaster better.
The 2016 Lowrider S is a much more pleasing design than the later softail versions.
Thanks for the comments. Ride safe
Awesome. Thanks so much! I will always point out pros and cons of any brand. Very cool!! Milwaukee, here we come!!
I did a test drive on the Indian and it was just perfect.
Gotta be stupid to pass on ABS, life saver many times for many people. Wanna ride hard and fast ,get ABS or go home.
The Sport Chief looks awesome, l ike it better than the Lower Rider S. And, that’s coming from an HD guy.
Best move I ever made moving to Indian. I never thought I would be able to ride anything but a Harley and I finally broke away. Love my Indian.
Basically harley discontinued the dyna and Indian said hey we got a dyna for you
Yes and no.. it does pick up on that market, but Harley guys will just go soft tail..all kinds of bikes could be called Dyna knock offs... Even if they were around before the Dyna and it predecessor the FXR
good point
Indian is ride by wire so no
By the way Harley Davidson is not nailing it at anything. The company has repeatedly seen losses every quarter and is dying a slow death by failing to attract any new customers.
Jason, I was speaking specifically about current marketing strategies. Thanks for watching. Ride safe.
I would love to test ride the Indian. I have a 2020 Low Rider to just have my own honest opinion
I like both bikes but dealing with the primary transmission of the Harley in a pain in the butt and I liked the old Dyna frame.
I just rode the Indian sport chief at the Daytona, international Speedway, demo rides and bike week. It’s a fun little bike but the FTR 1200 is really fun and the Challenger is a great bagger so is the roadmaster.
The Challenger is a good bike. I have a buddy that has a 2020. I rode it and liked it.

Good video gas tank knowledge, there are some two up seats available from indian with sissy bar
We could find NO passenger peg setup at all in the Indian Parts Catalog at the time of this video.
Likely detuned is all. A proper tune on a Dyno and they are neck and neck
The Indian is appealing and will definitely sway a lot of riders. like you, I enjoy the look and ride of the fxdls.
Good comparison! I wasn’t aware of the lean angle difference
The difference is you can haggle at an Indian dealership, where at a Harley dealer they want to add dealer markup.
Don’t forget the $750 surcharge that Harley adds. This was supposed to be temporary to offset supply chain issues but is not going away. I also thinks it’s a bit of a sneaky way to keep msrp numbers lower than what they actually are.
Your style is great I am reminded a lot to the Channel ProjectFarm though, I wonder why 😉
Indian will gain even more ground if Harley keeps the momentum going towards all electric
When riding in a group ride, fuel stops are set to the smallest tank anyway. IRT tank size.
Sure the 10 years is expiring that’s mandatory
Indian is a way better power train
No issues with air cooled. been around a very long time
Indian does work with a lot of influencers but cough cough. They’re the younger ones. Sorry lol
👍 Maybe, I'm too old? LOL~~
@@RyanUrlacher I hope you get a test ride as you provide good comparative reviews.
Excellent review, I agree with everything you said so far. Great Job!
1. Regarding that “severe” shock angle!
Am I wrong by thinking that the shocks instead of compressing are just ( well, compressing to some degree) “pivoting” just like swing arm !
( that’s what it appears like, looking at shock angle) 🤔
2. Of all the reviews, nobody ever mentioned that front brakes are ( not just dual calipers, but …) radial mount ! 🧐☝️
( even though it’s not a sport bike, doesn’t it still matter?! )
Advantage Indian 🤔
Thx for the comments
Freedom exhausts combat 2 - 1. Problem solved !!! 😁👍🏻
competition is always great for the market and the consumer but, I will always love my harley.
My grandfather had an Indian scout back in the 1930’s I think he liked it and even rode it in the snow sometimes he ha said
very cool
Where did you get the 86 hp rating on the harley Everywhere else I read its 103
I saw the bike in Daytona. It's a great looking bike.
Indian wins on technology alone. Love all bikes, but HD motors are designed for people who like wrenching, not people who want modernism.
Just stick wheels on smartphone and be done with it
Rode both bikes. Went for the lowrider s, better dealer network, better access to parts, and it handled better. The Indian is a heck of a bike though.
Fortunately I got my Low Rider S in '22 when the 117 was out and ABS was standard.
It's a very cool and detailed video. Thanks.
I dont understand this right from the get go. The FXLRS is 103 hp...where you get your numbers?
Nice comparison.. can u do an eval of the 2022 street glide st? And a similar other maker bike? I had a 2016 low rider s and it was a great looking and riding bike ... but I traded in for a 2022 street glide st an have only 450 miles on it as I got it in June and I live in New England and have to store it in the cold and inclement weather we have hear and am anxiously awaited better weather soon to get back on it
I didn't do a comparison, but here is my review of the Street Glide St: ua-cam.com/video/Ua1FNxk7PbY/v-deo.html
God bless 🇺🇲
🌵🏜️
I just subscribed great channel
Doesn’t the Harley have two-piston, axial mounted calipers up front on smaller rotors? Because you said they were neck-and-neck on braking? The Indian, afaik has four-piston, radial mounted Brembos on bigger discs. I don’t know about the feel of the two irl, but on paper that is no contest.
My 22 Low Rider S came with ABS, I put model specific LED turn signals for less than $150 from Eagle Lights in less than 10 minutes. That easy
Do your home work Harley motor does not have more power than the Indian. And the chassis the bike handles a lot better and I'm a Harley guy.
A flash retune / patch ? Might fix it …
Thanks for taking the time to review the bikes👍
No problem 👍
I like Indian bikes, but I am mostly a Harley-Davidson guy…. I do wish Harley would step up the tech .. I have the lowrider st , I love it, but I wish the fairing had all the tech that the RG and SG have.. so you get those benefits yet a Softail frame… And I agree about lighting
Indian is making a better motorcycle than HD nowadays.
I Must admit that I’d love the rider traction and Advanced ABS features.
The features „leaked“ of the new CVO model where they’ve added the rev max electronics to them makes me curious. Will they filter down to all Milwaukee 8 models?
Love my Indian Scout Bobber
Low Rider in my opinion is the better bike! Love your views and respect what you have to say. Thank you
Decisions decisions🤔
Both great American cruisers.
🇨🇦✌️😎
One semi American the other Canadian semi , sorry but i will not support Canada’s infringement on their citizens
👍
Indian is twice the bike of the Harley…so much more modern and way better style
Cool channel.
Does the the Indian have the engine oil sump problem?
Nope, that's a Milwaukee 8 exclusive
No issues with this motor for me and I have put 100,000 miles on two different bikes 16 Springfield and 19 chieftain
Thanks for the comments, Michael.
I blew my Indian scout sixty transmission 3rd gear ⚙️ in 3500mi been in the shop 2 mos. I do ride it like a dirtbike I ride almost allll bikes like a dirt bike. I grew up on them.
I like looking at a physical needle on my display unlike the chiefs digital one.
Good comparison. I guess your not in Indians favor. Other channels I watch that ride Harleys were given 1st rides with the Indian.
Maybe I'm too honest with my reviews and give pros and CONS.
If Indian want to damage Harley Davidson then lower price and longer warranty!
That’s a incorrect statement !
@@talkingrock7011 out of curiosity please pick one Harley soft tail model with ok rider triangle.
@@xtreme4stringbass good that at least for some people it fits.
Harley crap shocks vs Fox shocks...no comparison there lol. Weights are never what they claim anyway so that's mute. Ride modes vs none. Standard ABS vs optional. If you want better shocks...chock up another $1000 on the sticker of the Lowrider.
More than that if you don't install it yourself
Plus adding LEDs, Brembo, inverted front end and the left primary and right side belt keeps the Indians tracking straight as an arrow
@@Jermz1979 well said !
