I want to talk about things you need to avoid in your diet. But before I do lets touch on what the ideal diet is for a person suffering from anxiety as that is a common question that comes up.
The ideal diet for recovery from any anxiety be it panic attacks or general anxiety is a low glycemic diet. That basically means a diet that keeps your blood sugar levels constant throughout the day. The reason for this is that symptoms of panic and anxiety can often be very similar to the symptoms of low blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar levels fluctuate too much your body ends up releasing more adrenaline into your system making you feel more on edge.
Often a persons first panic attack can be caused by a sudden drop in blood sugar levels -for example after a night out of excessive drinking or eating. That initial panic attacks triggers a fear of fear and the person gets caught in vicious cycle of anxiety.
Now because foods with a low glycemic index take longer to digest they maintain blood sugar (glucose) levels at a relatively constant state throughout the day and you dont get any of those highs and lows.
There is ton of information on low Low-glycemic diet I don’t however recommend that people doing this coaching program change their diet too much because its is just too much effort and won’t be sustained by the majority of people.
What I therefore now recommend is to cut out the worst offenders from your diet. That can be enough to have a beneficial impact. Here are the things that absolutely must go in order for you to speed up your recovery.

In the winter of 2011, I completely changed my eating (from pizza, ice cream and cookies) to all whole foods. I have not had a panic attack or high anxiety since. All the cognitive behavioral therapy techniques I read were a lot easier to implement and I am back to work. I was agoraphobic and panicked frequently. I don't consume processed foods, sugar, gluten, caffeine, alcohol, or any animal products (because I am vegan). Here's what I eat in a typical day:
breakfast- homemade trail mix (almonds, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, sunflower seeds & raisins) with an orange and banana
lunch- beans or lentils with veggies (usually kale, spinach, cauliflower, broccoli combo) and a sweet potato, with 1/4 sliced avocado and turmeric, cumin, garlic, pepper, sea salt, and cinnamon and ginger for the sweet potato
    dinner- same as lunch
snack- apple with peanut butter (Teddie's all natural PB has no added sugar) and dates
I also eat fruit throughout the day. Fruit does not spike your blood sugar, not even dates, which are a very sticky, sweet, dried fruit.
Incidentally, my diet is very low glycemic and has resulted in much reduced anxiety. I have experienced a life-changing reduction in anxiety by changing my eating habits. I was literally a shut-in, nearly always on the verge pf panic. I had no friends and did not work. I also didn't drive. I was scared to go to the grocery store. My life has completely changed by changing my eating.

DeLayne Pratt That's a great idea! I think my healthy lifestyle makes my mind and body a more difficult place for anxiety to settle in, which makes it so much easier to adopt the necessary attitude to deal with anxiety.
Changing the way you think is hugely important, no matter what your lifestyle is. I used to be terrified of my anxious thoughts and/or feelings. My response was dramatic and tense. When I respond reasonably, by accepting the anxious thoughts and sensations and knowing they'll pass without causing a catastrophe, life is easy peasy. The worst things that ever happen to us are the things we imagine will happen!
I imagine my anxiety as Professor Trelawney from the Harry Potter series. She is a phony fortune teller, with glasses that comically magnify her eyes, beaded shawls around her neck, and a misty little voice. I imagine her predicting terrible things like, "What if you get do anxious you go insane? I see it all here, in my crystal gazing ball!" I think, "No offense, but you're a crummy fortune teller. You make outlandish predictions that don't come true. Let's just see what happens."
Don't let anxiety, a false alarm, rob you of your peace. I've been there. You don't have to stay on that path. I spent YEARS hiding away, agoraphobic. It's a prison your responses create and different responses are the key out of that place.

here's a few tips to try
Find the reasons why you are anxious - the first step to solving an issue is understanding why it is there.
Be comfortable about yourself - this makes it easier when you meet others.
Challenge youself - you will gain confidence by doing things - especially by doing things which stretch your limits.

Barry you have saved my life! I truely mean this! When I first started having anxiety/panic attacks I was so depressed and got to the point I felt so alone and had suicidal thoughts no matter how many Drs and counselors I had seen I was convinced I was going to suffer from those for the rest of my life. I had nothing to look forward to at that point. I had daily attacks no matter where I went I had them. I stopped eating and sleeping was down to 45mins a night! Then somehow I stumbled across your program and videos. They have changed my life forever! I am better now than ever before! I am really loving my live to the fullest. Thank you so much for all of this! If I could hug you I would. Thank you for helping me and so many others.

Had my first ever panic attack. I’ve never been anxious this whole year and booom out of nowhere I had one. That day I had coffee, Diet Coke, an energy drink, woke up at 6am and slept at 3am. I’m guessing that’s what caused it. Changed my diet and more sleep and feeling a lot better.

I only have one cup of coffee in and t he size is small. No sugar or anything, just black coffee. I got anxiety from COVID and sleeping late while also not getting out of bed since I had no routine. My weekly routine was wake up, shower, eat breakfast, and drive to college but with COVID making me do online classes it sucked. I only had two panic attacks so far and the only thing kicking my butt is sleep. I am scared and I learned I have sleep apnea but thankfully is minor. I got a CPAP and it makes my anxiety harder since my insurance says i have to use it.
Also I am doing a diet three weeks ago and been eating my fiber foods, protein, and vegetables. Since January 11 I have lost 13 pounds. Exercises helps too.
For some reason its just my sleep that is the issue and it makes me sacred thinking if I will sleep or I may die in my sleep when I had three days of palpations at night and end in the morning.
I want to get over this.

I have been feeling panic over the last few months but things are improving as I am educating myself with videos such as this. I have completely ditched coffee and changed my eating habits a little and its amazing what improvements can be made. I have a green tea for breakfast, I have a chamomile tea at night and a magnesium supplement at night. I also have an Epsom salts bath at least one night a week. I have a drink of Apple Cider Vinegar before before bed as I was having stomach problems (caused by stress). I am on blood pressure medication (beta blockers) at the moment but I hope to come off it at some point and am also starting a CBT course soon. I am of course not completely cured and I expect I will always have episodes or relapses but I am trying to do something about it. The biggest thing with me is my sleep at the moment and lack of it - last night I had a good night but the previous nights I was only sleeping a couple of hours and lack of sleep causes a lot of issues, its like a vicious circle. I am trying different techniques to sleep better. Finally I would say meditation is a good idea - I try and do it at least once a day, usually at night when I am in bed to help me sleep - there are plenty of free apps out there which help you relax.

My trigger is going out for jobs and having to commit to a job, the day in and day out of it all. Having to keep going back. To add to that, bartending is the type of job I'd be looking for. How do I avoid alcohol if it's part of the culture (craft cocktail movement) and an important passion in my life? I mean even while making the drinks I have to taste for balance. I must add that I always do my best to avoid drinking too much to the hangover point because I know what that does to my anxiety and I hate vomiting with a passion, and I also impose a 1-3 drink limit that I almost always adhere to.

    Hello Barry.
I am going to buy your DARE book in the next couple of days, but I have a couple of questions. I hope that's okay. I don't know if you will get back to me or not but it's worth a shot.
First off I am kinda curious, if the panic away programme was so effective, why did the DARE book get made? And, is the DARE book effective on it's own, or does it need to be used in conjunction with the panic away programme?
I have been housebound for most of the last 10 years, I have chronic anxiety and have anxiety symptoms all day every day, I feel awful every day, I feel scared every day, and I spend a good portion of every day laid in my bed on my laptop :( I also have ocd's. I have read a lot of stuff about anxiety, I know the basics of what anxiety is and how it works. And I know the basics of how you're supposed to face it (graded exposure, accepting the feelings instead of fearing them, facing the fear, putting yourself in the situations that scare you etc) but I've never felt able to do them. I feel awful all the time so putting myself in situations that are gonna make me feel worse just feel impossible at the moment, I don't feel brave enough to do it, I feel too scared to do it cos I'm already scared every day as it is. Do you think there is a chance your book can help me? Does it teach you HOW to ''accept'' it, how to put yourself in situations that cause you anxiety, or are you just supposed to push yourself yourself? Thank you, and sorry for the long comment.

here's a few suggestions you can try
Do Not have stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine
      Try to relax
      Exercise often
      Join a self-help group
(I learned these and more ideas from Trevs Panic Fixer website )

Caffeine is used for those who have ADHD. It actually helps to calm the brain so that thoughts can be organized. Studies show those who drink coffee live longer and healthier lives. 4 cups might be too much for sure. Too much alcohol, sugar or anything is probably not good.

I'm I coffee becaue i fail to sleep and the coffee keeps me awake. I have one in the very morning so I generally crash during my last period of high school. Sugar and salt are a massive problem for me. The only food that I can eat when anxious are always sweet or salty and I eat a lot. Makes me anxious thinking about my own habits. ☹

I quit drinking caffeine drinks because I had this energy drink “Bang” I only had one and I have the jitters and I took a hot shower and it made my heart rate go higher and I started having anxiety and then I went through a panic attack. I think I traumatize myself because I’m still going through my panic attack and I’m scared to drink caffeine or any sugary stuff. I’m went to the hospital and they said I was dehydrated and I got a fever or the flu I forgot which one they said. I’m still going through it but it’s not that bad as in the beginning.
