- Pete Seeger performs "If I Had A Hammer (The Hammer Song)" after being introduced by John Mellencamp at the Farm Aid concert in Saratoga Springs, NY on September 21, 2013. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

Farm Aid's performances are donated by the artists in order to raise funds and raise awareness for family farmers. They've raised their voices to help - what can you do?
In 1979 I wrote to Pete as a14 year old, letting him know I was his biggest fan . He wrote back.
I wrote again as a 39 year old, pregnant with my second son, thanking him for his lifelong commitment to social justice.
He wrote back, again.
Such a humble and warm hearted human being he was!!!
lovely, wonderful!!!!! 😍 🥰 😘
Wow, what a wonderful man.
Un grand humain! He is missing to humanite
@@liJK88 honestly he was.
Where are you chatting from
I am crying. RIP Pete Seeger.
I only had a few minutes with him in November 2013. Wanted to know him. Never got the chance. :-( But we all miss him.....
I met the love of my life in a march, remembering Pete
I was there. My husband had died in July, and I was going to sell the tickets, but our sons talked me into keeping them so we could go together. Pete Seeger was a totally unexpected addition. I used to sing this song to my sons, so a lot of tears were shed.
Tears are welling up in my eyes listening to this 94 year old legend.
The same man who refused to say whom he voted for during the Macarthy inquisitiion, the same man who worked and sang and created his whole life long for the betterment of his fellows.
A thousand thanks to Pete. Yours was a life well lived.
telemachus53 A purpose filled life, a positive influence on the collective trajectory of our species, RIP, Pete.
I am a west ham supporter come on the irons today.
I remember singing this in assembly at junior school...find memories..
My only regret is that I am too young to have discovered him earlier. Pete Seeger, a great man playing to the very end.
I heard Pete sing this with the Weavers in 1949 down in Greenwich Village and I have been listening to him ever since. The voice may be weak, but the spirit is still there. A great singer and a great man.
If I can stand at 94 I would be happy let alone perform on stage .. RIP
I can't listen to this man singing without tears in my eyes... RIP Pete Seeger - you remain such a great inspiration!
+don jenkins your sick
Troll
This made me burst into tears. Trying to learn this on ukulele. What a legendary song and man.
I remember him! I remember singing this song when I was a teenager! It’s so true and I’m sobbing just listening to this amazing man. His body may have been weak but his spirit and Love for humanity still rang through. 🙏💖🙌
I sadly discovered you a moment too late,it's hard to believe such a beautiful person ever lived, thank you very much for everything!,you're my new hero!it's because of people like you that me and my people keep struggling on everyday...keep walking while playing your banjo towards Heaven's gates, just follow the glowing light Pete!Rest in Peace!
If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song) was written by Pete Seeger and Lee Hays. God Bless Pete Seeger!!!
Yes, indeed, when they were part of The Weavers, who first recorded the song in 1949.
He just never gave up. Performing and leading the audience in song right up to the end. Yes, a life well lived and well shared. A lesson for us all. RIP my fellow banjo player.
😢 Beautiful! Joyful tears! 😢😢😢
Thank you
Tears. What a wonderful, humble human being Pete was.
WOW !!!! At age 94 not much voice... WHO cares??? Fantastic!!!
Close on a century and Pete still manages a crowd like nobody else. Good on ya man.
Pete should be a role model to us all.
So sad that the human body degrades so awfully to this point. You can tell the guy is full of so much life at 94. His weak body was the only thing keeping him from living for ever (physically)
Even physically he was in Pretty decent shape
Pete sang at my mother's funeral.
The body can only live for so long. Pete was in incredible physical and mental shape right to the end. But decades of bringing happiness to everyone took its toll unfortunately. At his age its hard to know if his passion for music kept him going or wore him out. Living long is almost genetic in his family. His sister lived a long life aswell btw. Either way, we're lucky to have so many recordings of him
Oh... My... God. Thank you so much Pete, The world was a better place with you here :(
This is sooooooooo awesome. The beautiful crowd showing their love for Pete! So cool!
I was privileged to meet Pete for the first time at a concert at Gaelic Park in the Bronx in 1964. God bless you, Pete, with health and joy as you continue to inspire folks for good after so many decades.
Three chords, the truth, and LOVE! God bless Pete Seeger!

Simple words, still applicable today. Long live Pete Seeger!
This great man put so much of his own life into other peoples causes, a real inspiration to generations. A life of music and self belief it doesn't get any more real. Thank you Mr Seeger.
Emocionante Sr. Peter Seeger. Em 1956 voce cantou esta música. Eu tinha apenas 2 anos de idade. Após 57 anos, vejo o Sr. cantando If I had a hammer e assisti com uma emoção contagiante. Parabéns meu amigo. Voce deixa este legado para a música internacional.

Pete was a hero of mine (and of many others). It makes me sad to see him so frail, though it is amazing he was still performing at 94.

This man is so inspiring. I just think he should win some Nobel Peace Prize or something. He would hate it but it might make some on the younger generation think.

The lyrics were written by Lee Hays, and the music by Pete Seeger, when they were both members of The Weavers, in 1949. The first recordings were late that year, by The Weavers. Guthrie had nothing to do with this song.
Thank you Pete we loves you
