Amethyst cracked her gem and almost died. The fact that Lapis was able to lift the entire ocean, and create mirror gems to fight the Crystal Gems at the same time WITH A CRACKED GEM really goes to show how scarily powerful she is.
@_crow_moon_ I love the subtle world building that someone says in later on that Lapis comes from the strongest Era of gems. The more recent ones are "Not made like they're used to, so essentially, Lapis was among the last of the other gems that were from a very strong Era. So that's terrifying to think about...BTW Ik who said that, but spoilers

that reveal dramatically changed the show for me, I'd had an inkling something was off, but a bunch of pieces fell into place here. (though I was very wrong about the reasons for them...afaik, i'm early season 4 atm)
Mirror Gem and Ocean Gem mark the mid-season one finale, but they were also intended to be the series finale if SU was cancelled suddenly before the end of that season, which was a distinct possibility considering the slow world-building and lack of plug-in-anywhere stories. Prepare for a steep learning curve about Gems from now to the end of S1, with further spurts through the rest of the series. SU is part morality play (i.e. Steven learning lessons about life and maturing) and part mystery; the mystery is now starting, and like all mysteries you have to pay attention to little things that may not have seemed important at the time but become vital later on. Steven's saving Lapis encouraged her to follow her dream of becoming a professional baseball player.
Steven is one of a kind, the only known hybrid of a Gem. And Gems don't need to breath to survive, being why they can be inside of water and in space and survive. Lapis didn't know Steven needed to breath to survive, so she just drop the entire ocean on him because she thought it would do him no harm.
Heck yeah, what else have we got so far? "I learned to be true to myself by watching myself die," "a boy on the cusp of manhood can't spend the whole day whackering," "well the important thing is honesty family friendship values and no one got arrested," and what else am I forgetting?

The pacing of Mirror Gem is insane. And the way the tone switches to pure DREAD the second that Steven says "you never told me it's like a person!" is insane. I'm lazy, but in these two episodes, which were originally meant to be a season finale before things got moved around, there are references to every single episode that's come before. It's really great. But yeah, I can't wait for Lapis to come back with the entirety of the ocean of Europa and just utterly annihilate the Earth.
I paused for a LONG while at that moment watching my first time. It was so clear their reaction was one of panic, that they knew EXACTLY what steven had stumbled across.
I can believe you guessed the series twist! You're right, the gems are manifestations of earth. Some are elements, some are values, but if they leave, they take their parts of earth with them. The Blowfish was wind, Centipeedle was acid, Amethyst is fun, Pearl is honor, and Garnet is strength, which is why Pearl and Amethyst wanted to fuse with her. I probably shouldn't spoil why the Gems disobeyed orders and kept the experiment going though, that's a few season ahead.
Pearl gets all the best facial expressions, throughout the show, she just gets the best. And yeah, this pair of episodes recontextualises so much of what we assumed from prior episodes. And raises questions about if what we've been doing so far in the show is entirely good.
Ahhhh you finally met my favourite character! She also happens to be the most debated character in the fandom for reasons you will find out, BUT, put that aside, she is great, she is insanely strong. She fucking created a water tower with the whole ocean!
the water bouncing off cause of his shield was actually just what happens when you bang something against a domed surface, like a shield lol it creates sound reverb, which is perfect for displacing water.
So the thing to realize about this double feature is that while S1 was released as 52 episodes, it was originally produced as two seasons of 26 episodes. That's why Mirror Gem / Ocean Gem is structured as and functions as a season finale for what's sometimes referred to as "season 1A".
that explains a lot actually...also why the start of the actual season two is a such a fillery mess with delayed season 1 episodes thrown in at random (which mosco plans to address by watching the intended order, not the broadcast order) ...and we can hopefully get her to jettison say uncle into the sun, where it belongs.

So if i remember correctly, this was conceived as a potential season finale if the show didnt get renewed. It introduces a mysterious new character, gives us some lore revelations, has our whole main cast come together, with steven especially getting to demonstrate his character growth, and It leaves on not even really a cliffhanger, just a mystery. Makes you wonder just how big this storys universe is. Lucky for us, it did get renewed, and that mystery wont remain a mystery.
Lapis Lazuli has insane Hydro kinetic powers. It makes you wonder what other gems out there are capable of doing. Anyways, moving on to Lapis’s grudge against the crystal gems. I’m glad she eventually got past it later down the road and became friends with Steven. Hanging out at his dad’s car wash, where she works as an employee. It’s also where she lives, since she doesn’t have a room back at the temple. She helps Greg clean cars in exchange for residence in the car wash.
Garnet's first name is cotton candy i love garnet, episodes from now on show bits and pieces of her personality instead of just making her the cold silent and mature one
Spoiler Alert: All the gems actually come from inside of a star, the nearest star system to earth. They’re each made to mimic organic life from different planets. The crystal gems are all earth animals. Pearl is actually an earth bird, Amethyst is a hedgehog, and Garnet is a mantis shrimp. Steven’s mom was actually made after a lion, hence the pet lion she kept.

Not exactly, the vibration itself destroyed the clone. It’s common in fiction to have liquid beings being practically indestructible against physical attacks, but being highly vulnerable to elemental ones, or noise.
And so you met Lapis Lazuli. And you now also know the truth of the monster gems; I wonder what you think of the Crystal Gems' encounters with them in hindsight... Given how season one is twice the length of the other seasons, and that this pair of episodes occurs halfway through the season, you could, in practice, consider this the season one finale, with the rest of season one as season two. Not really any particularly important information, but I consider it a neat observation.
I mean, this episode was meant as a finale since the show was expected to get canceled if I'm not wrong, but this episode managed to catch people's attention and get more views and that's how the show kept going So yeah, I guess it makes sense if you think about it as a finale of sorts

Like a lot of folks, Mirror Gem is the moment I was fully invested in the series. Lapis appears, turns around, and with a couple of cryptic phrases, completely upends the narrative. Buckle up, that's something that can happen now.
I’m watching the reaction right now. I had to laugh at Mosco thinking the explanation of what ‘Bob’ means is a patreon exclusive. 😂 Oh, Mosco; every Steven Universe fan knows way Bob means.
And here we are...nothing will be the same from this point on. Such a crazy back-to-back series of episodes that really turned everything we know on its head! And yes, it is VERY frustrating to not know everything yet...but the answers will come eventually!
Once lapis gets back to her home, she’ll send the crystal gems a message that consists of mostly in-distinct screaming, but if you listen closely, she mentions green Doritos.
I love how beautiful this show will subtly introduce pieces bit by bit. You can't watch this episode without understanding so many things from previous ones. Gems can reform their bodies from Pearl, they can get cracked like Amethyst, objects with gems can be magical like the pillow, Steven's healing spit with Connie and can work on gems like we see with the Centipeetle, etc etc All those tiny bits of info merge in your head for you to understand this entire encounter with Lapis. It's such a genius way to dripfeed information without you thinking too hard about it in the moment but make it more impactful for moments that do matter.
These two episodes mark a major progression in the series. During the first half of the first season you can tell that the series is trying to find its footing and cement its identity. The quality and tone are very uneven. But this is where the show really establishes itself. From this point the quality continues to get steadily better and better, and everything feels more polished and well-developed.
19:30 "He healed you and you just left him to fall and die?" This ties into a headcanon/pattern I noticed about the gems; they're a lot more physical than humans. And I mean, why not? When they take physical damage, they poof, unless it's to the gem directly, and it's implied those are pretty sturdy to anything but a direct hit. It pops up a lot later in the series, but this thing with Lapis is a good example of it; I think gems in general just don't naturally take physical safety into consideration much. They work out arguments while literally fighting them out, oftentimes the gems do things with Steven that seem reckless from a human perspective, but if severe physical damage is an inconvenience at most 9/10, why would you worry about it?
these two episodes were actually the first episodes of steven universe i ever watched. saw them airing during a SU marathon on cable, recognized the SU name from something my friends mentioned in passing, watched it and became obsessed
I love Lapis. She's one of my favorite Gems. The progression of this story is slow AF but it's so satisfying to see everyone take their time getting to know the characters and Steven's power to grow naturally.
With some of these episodes it's like you have been living in a valley all your life and make it to the top of a mountain. All of a sudden your world is so much larger than you thought but you still can't see over the horizon to what's beyond.
Ahhhhhhh!!!! I'm so happy to see you get to these episodes. I'm pretty sure it was here where I really started loving SU, mainly because I love characters with water based powers as a kid (Like Lapis, Katara from Avatar and Nya from Ninjago) Also fun fact: This episode was at one point meant to be a finale. I forgot if it was finale for the season or the whole show in general. Whatever the case, it ended up getting picked up again for more, so consider this more of a mid-season finale.
I think the reason the water forms stopped after Steven put up his shield was because the reverberations from the water hitting it dispelled them, not that he has any kind of power to dispel others powers (not yet anyway)
I was waiting ALL week with so much anticipation for this reaction! I haven't really commented on a Steven Universe reaction before this, but I felt this milestone required it. Steven Universe was my favorite show for a long while. It started airing when I was in Middle School (about 12 years old), but I only started really getting into it around this point in the series. Some episodes from this first 26 I hadn't seen until I did my rewatch for your reactions because Cartoon Network didn't have the reruns I needed to catch up (not to mention the reruns weren't in series order). I actually never finished the whole series while it was still airing, as I had stopped watching TV for the most part in favor of watching UA-cam creators. But yeah, this shit gets good, and very soon too. Sorry for yapping so long. I look forward to 11 weeks from now!

I'm so glad you finally got to meet Lapis, the anti-hero to Steven. It's crazy how we get a whole season where we switch perspectives to see Lapis' life in the gem dimension before they go to invade the human dimension, insane stuff.
I just want to point out that Lapis was holding the entire earth ocean and matching all the gems in combat at the same time, and she did all that while her gem was cracked so she wasn't even at her max power

Just to clarify. When Steven used activated his shield and made the water gems fall apart. I’m pretty sure they were defeated by the sound/ frequency emitted when the shield was hit. Not any new power.
Pearl and the rest of the Crystal Gems knew another gem was in that mirror but never bothered to let her out for a very long time. Never even bothering to talk to her like a person or even wonder how to help her

Yes, there is a very good reason for Garnet to wear the glasses.

Given how season one is twice the length of the other seasons, and that this pair of episodes occurs halfway through the season, you could, in practice, consider this the season one finale, with the rest of season one as season two. Not really any particularly important information, but I consider it a neat observation.
I mean, this episode was meant as a finale since the show was expected to get canceled if I'm not wrong, but this episode managed to catch people's attention and get more views and that's how the show kept going
So yeah, I guess it makes sense if you think about it as a finale of sorts

Like a lot of folks, Mirror Gem is the moment I was fully invested in the series. Lapis appears, turns around, and with a couple of cryptic phrases, completely upends the narrative. Buckle up, that's something that can happen now.

I love how beautiful this show will subtly introduce pieces bit by bit. You can't watch this episode without understanding so many things from previous ones.
Gems can reform their bodies from Pearl, they can get cracked like Amethyst, objects with gems can be magical like the pillow, Steven's healing spit with Connie and can work on gems like we see with the Centipeetle, etc etc
All those tiny bits of info merge in your head for you to understand this entire encounter with Lapis.
It's such a genius way to dripfeed information without you thinking too hard about it in the moment but make it more impactful for moments that do matter.
These two episodes mark a major progression in the series. During the first half of the first season you can tell that the series is trying to find its footing and cement its identity. The quality and tone are very uneven. But this is where the show really establishes itself. From this point the quality continues to get steadily better and better, and everything feels more polished and well-developed.

This ties into a headcanon/pattern I noticed about the gems; they're a lot more physical than humans. And I mean, why not? When they take physical damage, they poof, unless it's to the gem directly, and it's implied those are pretty sturdy to anything but a direct hit. It pops up a lot later in the series, but this thing with Lapis is a good example of it; I think gems in general just don't naturally take physical safety into consideration much. They work out arguments while literally fighting them out, oftentimes the gems do things with Steven that seem reckless from a human perspective, but if severe physical damage is an inconvenience at most 9/10, why would you worry about it?

With some of these episodes it's like you have been living in a valley all your life and make it to the top of a mountain. All of a sudden your world is so much larger than you thought but you still can't see over the horizon to what's beyond.
Ahhhhhhh!!!! I'm so happy to see you get to these episodes. I'm pretty sure it was here where I really started loving SU, mainly because I love characters with water based powers as a kid (Like Lapis, Katara from Avatar and Nya from Ninjago)
Also fun fact: This episode was at one point meant to be a finale. I forgot if it was finale for the season or the whole show in general. Whatever the case, it ended up getting picked up again for more, so consider this more of a mid-season finale.
I think the reason the water forms stopped after Steven put up his shield was because the reverberations from the water hitting it dispelled them, not that he has any kind of power to dispel others powers (not yet anyway)

I was waiting ALL week with so much anticipation for this reaction! I haven't really commented on a Steven Universe reaction before this, but I felt this milestone required it.
Steven Universe was my favorite show for a long while. It started airing when I was in Middle School (about 12 years old), but I only started really getting into it around this point in the series. Some episodes from this first 26 I hadn't seen until I did my rewatch for your reactions because Cartoon Network didn't have the reruns I needed to catch up (not to mention the reruns weren't in series order). I actually never finished the whole series while it was still airing, as I had stopped watching TV for the most part in favor of watching UA-cam creators.
But yeah, this shit gets good, and very soon too. Sorry for yapping so long. I look forward to 11 weeks from now!

It's crazy how we get a whole season where we switch perspectives to see Lapis' life in the gem dimension before they go to invade the human dimension, insane stuff.
I just want to point out that Lapis was holding the entire earth ocean and matching all the gems in combat at the same time, and she did all that while her gem was cracked so she wasn't even at her max power

Just to clarify. When Steven used activated his shield and made the water gems fall apart. I’m pretty sure they were defeated by the sound/ frequency emitted when the shield was hit. Not any new power.
