I can still remember the day I came home and that ep was on. I just decided to start watching when it aired. It really just realize how many more layers there are to her
"Do It For Her" is one of the best Pearl songs, genuinely disarming in how the melody is so soft and smooth, yet the subject matter is sneakily tragic.
When I first watched this show I thought that Connie’s part of Do it For Her would make a great reprise, she’s kneeling on a battlefield and Steven’s in danger and the music changes and she starts singing, and poofs the gem that was gonna stab Steven.
Fans have argued whether Pearl was brainwashing Connie to become some kind of bushido-coded mindless blood warrior. For myself, I'm reminded how we've seen how Connie mostly keeps away from frivolity when she isn't with Steven, and not just because of her parents jealous helicoptering. In her free time she became a devoted fan of what seems to be a fairly serious YA fantasy series, one that apparently contains strong opinions against authoritarianism and promoting self-sacrifice for the greater good and the protection of loved ones. So, I submit that Connie agreed overall with Pearl's words, at least in terms of practicality...combat is inherently dangerous and taking too much concern for personal safety over successfully completing the mission (i.e. protecting Steven and/or Earth) will ironically likely just get you killed sooner and fail the mission. Connie has also had long experience with dealing with overbearing authority figures, and she may have simply figured that agreeing with everything Pearl said would make acquiring her sword-fighting skills so much faster and easier.
This episode has the clearest foreshadowing for onion being yellow diamond, it’s actually really impressive that so many fans predicted it while it was airing because I was none the wiser
"Why won't you just let me do this for you Rose!?" One of the most tragic moments in the entire show. Combined with how worried Steven gets at Connie's intense training and Pearl pushing her to such great sacrifice, this was a pretty disturbing episode.
"Why won't you let me do this for you Rose?!" The line puts me into tears every single time I hear it. I knew it was going to wreck me this afternoon, and I still walked into it. It's so beautiful and horrible at the same time. All that from a 'kids' cartoon.
Sadie's scar never goes away, she just gets more and more badass until she's leading a crew of gem ninjas. Also, unfortunately, Ronaldo does end up becoming an interstellar diplomat.
"Do It For Her" is such a disarming song. Such a soft melody with lyrics that are pretty tragic when you stop to dissect them. The song writing in this show is incredible.
Pearl's story and her relationship with Rose starts to unfold more and more. I can't wait for the reveal Pearl was the Queen of Gemlands and grew tired of being mindlessly worshipped by gems like Rose
I've never see anyone defend Pearl as much as Mosco, especially through "Do It For Her." I love Pearl, but if there were ever a wake-up call that she needs therapy, it's this.
Like I said with Rose's Scabbard: You know it's a banger Pearl episode, beloved by the fandom, whenever she almost gets Steven killed. We can extend that to Connie too, or count Steven getting targeted by her training holograms; either way Sworn to the Sword is undeniably one of those top tier Pearl episodes. WHY WON'T YOU JUST LET ME DO THIS FOR YOU, ROSE?!
Well yeah i just kinda thought it's common sense?? Maybe it's because I grew up in a really rough neighbourhood with gangs and watched my best friend getting stabbed and stuff but anytime we got into a fight there was always a chance one of us wouldn't walk away. Isn't that the point of a fight? Especially when blades are involved? 😅
@warriorcatkitty that would explain it!! So glad you've never had to experience that so could totally see what that line was a big deal for you compared to me
@ I'm sorry you had that happen around you. I'm fortunate enough to not have had it happen... though "rough neighborhoods" has happened. Anyway! Looking forward to the next one.
Love that you had that double take in the "I don't matter" scene, because yeah that was the moment I fully understood the urgency. The episode teaches a good lesson to kids about throwing yourself into something without worrying about one's physical or mental state.
The Pregnant Steven thing was a reference to the episode "Steven's Lion." Steven was ordering pizza & said he was "ordering for two" (meaning him and Lion), Ronaldo overheard & was like "Steven's PREGNANT?!"
Now I will admit, this is a good Pearl song. But you've really got to wait a bit longer to hear her break out a magical rendition of "Baby Got Back." It explains a lot about Pearl's background and we get to see Amethyst twerk. One of the high points of the show really.
once more, this show is so good at relationships....shining a spotlight on how easy it is to build up this idea of someone in your head as precious and all-important, how easy it is to think you're giving selfless love and devotion but instead just martyring yourself for someone who would rather see you happy and unharmed. that what's healthy is self-worth and communication, with mutual respect being the foundaton for true teamwork. and the show turns it into fist-pump hype moments so smoothly, it's insane
god i remember how disappointed people were when rising tides/crashing skies came out 😭 fortunately it was part of a stevenbomb, so we didn't have to wait more than like a day for another episode. i am however one of the people who liked the episode. i know the entire fandom hates ronaldo but honestly i find him funny sometimes.
@@nessie-from-earthbound1601 If i watched the show for the first time after it was done i probably wouldn't mind him, but watching as the episodes came out, with all the hiatuses, realizing an episode was going to be about Ronaldo was always very disappointing, it felt like a waste of an episode
I once had a dream where that was an actual plot twist in the show. …I mean, that wasn’t a dream, it totally actually happens that way in the show. Aren’t I a horrible commenter for spoiling things that will 100% happen?
They waited to do the new intro until right here because Amethyst finally got her new form in the previous episode, following Pearl in "Steven the Sword Fighter" and Garnet in "Jailbreak"
Love how much Ronaldo foreshadows. That cryogenic frozen pets arc in season 3 goes hard fr. Don't worry, Ronaldo doesn't end up being a diplomat... but he does become a space samurai.
This is the start of a trend with the episode titles where they suggest the something really big is happening, and then the episode is more chill. I never found out if it was intentional, but when the show was releasing the episode names would drop significantly before the actual episode drop. So when we all saw an episode titled "Rising Tides, Crashing Skies" we all assumed this would be about Lapis in the fusion. And then we got hit with the Ronaldo
God its so funny how they do that. Like, an episode called Steven Literally Dies would be about him dying in a video game and an episode called Bongo 2, The Bongoning would be about Steven trying to initiate peace between the homeworld and crystal gems, then having to quickly learn to play the traditional Gem anthem on bongos because Jasper smashed his guitar
This series actually made me rewatch the entire series with a friend from start to finish, it was his first time ever watching SU and we finished it today, he absolutely loved it.
Sworn to the Sword is actually the first episode of Steven Universe I saw, I watched it with my then-roommate who's a big fan. Genuinely think that I wouldn't have gotten through the early episodes without knowing that something like this was on the way.
Connie: I've been taught that my purpose is to protect, that whether I live or die doesn't matter. She-Ra: Oh...oh, *no.* You have to break that habit immediately.
[MOD] Hey everyone! Remember to keep the comments free of any spoilers of future episodes for Mosco. Have fun & be creative with fake spoilers! Also, make sure we’re keeping the comments cool & comfortable for everyone here. Enjoy the reaction y’all!!!
I blathered about this on the Patreon, but in short, "Do It for Her" is what pulled me in to this show, so Sworn to the Sword is a really significant episode for me. When I was rewatching it this time, when Pearl said "why won't you let me do this for you, Rose" I involunarily let out a howl of despair. Poor Pearl, she gets so lost sometimes.
if you liked pearl's song in this episode, you'll love the episode "pearl's secret rap career" in which we find out about pearl's secret rap career. it's a shame it aired right before "steven's knife" and got overshadowed
It's eventually revealed that Garnet saved Ronaldo 's mom when she was pregnant with him and accidentally imbued him with a fragment of her foresight, which is why all his ridiculous theories eventually prove to be true - sort of.
Peak era of Steven universe right here. I LOVE watching peoples reactions to this show especially when it's their first time seeing it. This show is so special to SO many of us and getting to see other people enjoying it so many years later, is so so special 🥹🫶
Ronaldo's "Baby maybe?" is in reference to when we first met lion Steven went into Fish-Stew Pizza and said "I'm ordering for two!" to which Ronaldo exclaimed "Steven's pregnant!?"
Just a tiny tiny note about Onion being able to speak because of the breath sound : being able to breathe/air passing through the mouth doesn't necessarily mean someone can speak, many other things come into play in order for speech to happen (not spoiling anything about Onion btw, I just mean that as general info)
Pearl screaming "Just let me do this for you Rose!"... Pearl has always thought, that she didn't matter. So she gave everything to the woman she loved. Even when it wasn't reciprocated.
I recommend the extended version of the opening! She adds a few more lyrics to the song and a really cute montage accompanied by a recap of the last season! Plus, there's a moment in the extended version that hints at future plots!
XD seagulls being like "FOOOOOOOD!! GIMMMME!" that brought back bad memories of when i was a baby and a seagull took a hotdog literally out of my mouth.
3:15 "I wonder if that's, like, implying that she's going to be even bigger and more involved in the show in some way" SWORN. TO. THE SWORD. LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
In Fusion Cuisine when Alexandrite unfuses, you can actually se ruby and sapphire for a frame while she's unfusing, but they're both holding hands so they end up becoming garnet before anyone can notice.
I really enjoyed the episode with Connie and Steven learning how two sword fight and also this intro is going to be the main intro up until season 5 just give you the heads up now
about fusion. Fusions give the gems extra enhancements, not specifically limbs. For garnet, it's the eyes. Two from Ruby, one from Sapphire, this gives garnet heightened perception. Stevonnie is more vauge, but conformed to be their age, both looking, acting, and is an actual adult (their age combines pretty much)
“Why won’t you let me do this for you Rose” I know I was late to the party but for a while I always questioned What If Steven is actually a Clone of Rose but with no memory of who he was or used to be And then I heard that line like the pin just dropped and I FREAKING SCREAMED SAYING “OMG THAT WAS CONFIRMATION 😱😱😱😱”
The thing that I love more than anything (fastest way to get me emotional in a movie) is someone going into a fight knowing they're fighting for something bigger than themselves and knowing there's a real chance they're not surviving. The way that Pearl has that dedication in the song breaks my heart. Similar vibe to "in it for love."
The thing about Ruby and Sapphire always holding hands was more ment in like a joking kind of way. The multiple limbs thing is more of a stylistic choice I think
It's not necessarily a reference so much as both shows drawing on the same real-world cultural motif in this instance, but Connie's outfit is very much like what Gohan wore during his training with Piccolo in DBZ.
So the jam song is actually really hard to play on the uke, I remember wanting to play it for my sis and was immediately humbled by the chord progressions 😂 Steven is really that guy hahaha
I started watching your reactions last week, and now I have catch up. I've been enjoying revisiting the series with you, your enthusiasm is contagious. Also, English is not my first language and I just got the jam pun because you pointed it out
I love the episode where Steven gets to visit a coral zoo run by some gems. To think Renaldo thought gems would want a stupid human zoo when effectively living rock creatures exists and are amazing to look at. Though the zookeepers didn't like steven touching the coral, that nearly gets the crystal gems incarcerated for 3 centuries.
There's some very good show, don't tell here that I don't see a lot of people talk about. After their fusion there's a subtle shift in how the gems treat Connie. From Steven's friend to being part of the family. So much so that it doesn't even occur to Pearl to clear the training with Connie's parents and that Connie wanting to essentially be "Steven's pearl" was the most normal progression of their relationship in her eyes. You can see it a little more in future episodes but no one ever even implies that Connie shouldn't be involved in whatever is going on.
Rising tides and crashing skies is actually one of my all time favorite episodes of Steven universe, I just LOVE the in universe UA-cam video format, and how it’s edited, it’s just so funny. I love Ronaldo and how funny he is (he’s overhated)
again, if Steven hadn't come back from Steven Universe Future shapeshifted as a Lion and given Connie the sword, this would never have happened, and then Connie would have gotten killed by Jasper trying to defend Steven with a tennis racket
Ranaldo has some interesting ideas. Once you find out the role of pearls on home world things will make more sense. You have no idea how unique steven is
I dont know if this is spoilers but since Connie and Steven are kids at the moment, you won’t see a relationship like owl house or anything, it’s obvious that they are as you’ve seen, but they just refer to themselves as friends through most or all of their childhood right now since they have child minds i suppose
God I love Do It For Her. It perfectly encapsulates how Pearl felt for Rose, and how her feelings affect how she thinks of others. And it also shows how much Steven doesn't want anyone to sacrifice themselves for him.
The song Steven and Connie was singing in "Sworn to the Sword" and some other songs from Steven Universe can be heard on SiriusXM's children's music station called Kids Place Live (formerly XM Kids)!
do it for her is one of my favourite songs in the whole show. most of pearls songs are my favourites. they suite my voice so well and i love singing them

"Did Rose make you feel like you were nothing?" "Rose made me feel like I was _everything."_

That line really cut deep. 😭😭😭

Connie caught a case of pearlness for a second there 💀

Even now, after having watched the show years in the past, I STILL got baited by the title of the second episode into thinking it was Lapis based.
Good ol SU with the happy cheery music while indoctrinating a child soldier lmao
about fusion.
People have been saying it's related to how in-sync they are, which really makes sense for Stevonnie
@jlilley73 but I feel like that falls appart later on.
I can't share more bc SPOILERS.
I think it's mainly maybe a sign of power
@ I think I know who you mean...
@@jlilley73 Eh.
It can work in a lot of ways tbh
Cool, now she can watch the extended intro.
she recorded it yesterday ! it will be on patreon very soon and then UA-cam a bit later (heavily edited sadly, 'cause copyright and musics and all)
It's not necessarily a reference so much as both shows drawing on the same real-world cultural motif in this instance, but Connie's outfit is very much like what Gohan wore during his training with Piccolo in DBZ.
So the jam song is actually really hard to play on the uke, I remember wanting to play it for my sis and was immediately humbled by the chord progressions 😂 Steven is really that guy hahaha
Pearl definitely has a samurai mentality. All about the liege, nothing else matters.
Do It For Her is so genuinely disturbing and sad, in such a sweet and casual way that only Steven Universe can pull off.
There was foreshadowing, but not where you think, hehehe….
Oh no! She's realized how important Ronaldo will be to the plot moving forward!
Your energy is so infectious! Never change.
Ronaldo is smarter than people think
Ranaldo has some interesting ideas. Once you find out the role of pearls on home world things will make more sense. You have no idea how unique steven is
I dont know if this is spoilers but since Connie and Steven are kids at the moment, you won’t see a relationship like owl house or anything, it’s obvious that they are as you’ve seen, but they just refer to themselves as friends through most or all of their childhood right now since they have child minds i suppose
I may be wrong, but I suspect Pearl may have been projecting her own hang ups during Connie's training.
God I love Do It For Her. It perfectly encapsulates how Pearl felt for Rose, and how her feelings affect how she thinks of others. And it also shows how much Steven doesn't want anyone to sacrifice themselves for him.
I choose to believe that the little "hi" there at the beginning was inspired by Elijah's intros.
Looking forward to more "Chair Reacts To" episodes! 😆
The song Steven and Connie was singing in "Sworn to the Sword" and some other songs from Steven Universe can be heard on SiriusXM's children's music station called Kids Place Live (formerly XM Kids)!
@18:05 Ronaldo knows all..
do it for her is one of my favourite songs in the whole show. most of pearls songs are my favourites. they suite my voice so well and i love singing them
