Okay. You need to understand one thing.😅 Blushing in this cartoon is not always associated with love. It's more like... embarrassment? Both in a bad and a good sense. Of course, when Pearl is blushing because of Rose, or the whole thing between Steven and Connie, it’s in good way. However, the meaning of blushing depends on the situation. :)
As I see it, Greg and the crystal gems were on good term initially because of Rose. Later Greg and Amethyst formed a legit friendship, but after Steven was born things get awkward between them.
I love that Peridot gets the information that she thought was relevant, then immediately went on to try to kill Steven and Mosco goes and says: "The Gems turned to violence very quickly, I think dialogue was still an option." Saludos desde Chile!!!
I like that they don't spell out what happened between Amethyst and Greg. Anything we come up with will be worse/more interesting than the truth. "We can't keep fighting these things forever. Well we can but I don't want to." Is one of my favorite Garnet lines. Right up there with her phone conversation with Connie's mom and the subsequent "Sorry, I panicked."
the "I panicked" part is I feel a perfect encapsulation of the dynamic between [REDACTED] and [REDACTED], I mean you can just see that conversation playing out.. "The children are playing...WITH SWORDS!!!, [insert future vision] oh no they are bleeding... AH THERE DEAD!!! ... don't call back"
The Maximum capacity shapeshift scene is still seen as one of the most disturbing scenes in the entire show Ngl i imagine a lot of us have been waiting for you to see this ep, specifically this scene
In my eyes it's not that Amethyst and Greg were in any kind of relationship. But Amethyst has a lot of self-hatred. And she has absolutely no problem to strike you where it hurts the most. Her blushing in the beginning is most likely a sense of shame at the person she used to be and she slid back into.
To me it's not so much self hatred as it is feeling left behind. I would compare their relationship to two friends that were in a band together, but one had to leave to start a family, while the other remained playing music and living a punk lifestyle. Amethyst and Greg were really good friends, Amethyst kind of looked up to him, clearly taking a lot of her rocker persona from him. But then Greg had to step up, first because his wife was pregnant and then because he was a father, and Amethyst felt left behind. That's why she said "I bet you would stay if it was for her", because she feels like Greg gave up a lot of the things they had in common due to his increasingly serious relationship with Rose.
@@at5203 I honestly think you're both right on the money. Two things can be true at once. To add to what you what you already said, it seems like Little Butler was Amethysts' way of sneakily, but perhaps unconsciously, getting her friend back. Watching TV is, by nature, a passive and mindless activity, which may easily spiral out of control if you let it consume your life. In a way, Little Butler was a portal to their shared past and the connection they once had. I don't think Amethyst put in the tapes out of malice, but out of loneliness and a sense of longing for the good old days and the friend she shared them with. It was only midway through when she seems to fully grasp what she's doing, supported by her saying "everything's always right with him [Little Butler]". Of course, Greg eventually becomes aware of the familiar path they're both taking on again, to which she initially responds with desperate attempts at making him stay, to outright hurting him after the realization and subsequent pain that he won't - because, as OP said, she lacks self-respect and, thus, does not respect others either, and she knows exactly to hit them where it hurts.
The first episode is a reference (I don't know how literal) for two people coping with their grief for a shared loved one by having an ill-advised romantic fling. The scenes between Greg and Amethyst in the storage unit are darkly lit to give them an intimate atmosphere while a lot of their dialogue is subtly coded. Amethyst's early quip about having "seen [Greg's] junk before" is a wink to the older members of the audience in this regard. The whole thing comes to a head with Steven "walking in" on Greg and Amethyst together while she takes on the shape (and role) of his mother and everyone being mortified by it.
god, maximum capacity was one of my favourite episodes back in the day, a big part of it was because i found amethyst and greg's past relationship so interesting (tbh i still do find it interesting). not necessarily in an "oh i ship it" kind of way, but because their complicated past and how they interact with each other is just so interesting and leaves so many questions.
Mosco wasn't ready for how this show HARDLINES into trauma super fast. I love getting to see small bits of you and Elijah together, it's always so cute. you saw the Redeye in an earlier episode, that's what they used the cannons on. now for my fake spoilers, Garnet is the Queen of Homeworld, that's why she doesn't want to be seen, she's been taking a vacation on earth for several hundred thousand years. ~
I love The Nanny. It's one of my wife's favorites also. It's a nice comfort watch during difficult days. (And with her mother in the hospital and our son dealing with chronic illness, we need all the comfort viewing we can get!)
I still love it to this day myself. Caught it on TV as a kid once and it just really stuck with me for some reason. I think it was the...animated Christmas episode, funnily enough.
There was no romantic implications whatsoever and everyone should've known amethysts comment was just a throwaway dirty joke like every cartoon network show, just like the other commentor said, not all blushing is romantic
@@mar420.74 As far as that joke goes, I wouldn't be surprised if Amethys had to be taught concepts like 'not walking in on humans using the bathroom'. So nothing would have had to have happened romantically for it to be true.
"Maximum Capacity" is my favorite episode of Steven Universe. It may not have any important plot points, but it reveals the emotional core of a lot of the show. The core of INTENSE PAIN.

Understated detail: amethyst still couldn't allow the stuff to be thrown away. It's all in her room now. Greg has let go of the past, but she's still carrying it.
I do love the bond between Amethyst and Greg they have together. Li'l Butler sure looks funny, they do love the show together and Amethyst shapeshifts in to Rose in front of Greg, shocker.
I don't necessarily think Amethyst and Greg had a thing -- I think the first part of the episode is baiting us into thinking that they did, before revealing that the real source of tension between them was that Amethyst blamed him for Rose not being around anymore and they hung out a lot after she passed only for her to blow up at him one night over it. It's up to interpretation of course. But none of their interactions in this episode indicate to me that they have a romantic or sexual history. Amethyst just seems mad at him. (Which is perhaps unfair, but also, given that Rose gave up her form specifically to create Steven as a consequence of meeting Greg, not entirely without a basis in logic.)
Ok so some insight on how Garnet's future vision works. She can predict the future based on what she thinks will happen. She can forsee multiple futures but the one that's going to happen is the one Garnet needs to guess that will happen. This only works if Garmet can correctly predict the actions of other people/gems based of her understanding of them. Let's say Steven wants to eat something and Garnet wants to predict what will happen afterwards. For that to happen Garnet needs to know what Steven would choose to eat and then choose said timeline too look into the future. It's one of the main reasons I like Garnet's future vision because it solely depends on her relationships with the characters around her. I hope this made sense and I'm really sorry for any mistakes grammatical or otherwise
19:58 The specific moment is not in this video, but one interesting thing is that after Pearl’s little speech Peridot just responds with “The Crystal Gems…?” Her tone almost makes it seem like she’s never heard of them before. If she did, I’d expect her tone to be less confused and more surprised/angry, considering that the Crystal Gems have previously said that they protected Earth against their Homeworld, so you’d think there’d be negative sentiment regarding them among other Gems.
Obviously it's just head-canon, but my personal take is that Greg and Amethyst had a brief and unhealthy sexual relationship after Rose's death. More about being close to each other than true emotions for each other, liking each other enough to wallow together, but not enough to build anything healthy or meaningful, with eventually Greg breaking it off.
The books do foreshadow some future events like Connie getting a magical companion similar to a familiar so feel free to keep their conversations about it in mind
My impression with Amethyst was that after Rose passed, both Greg and Amethyst had lost the person they cared about, and kind of leaned on each other for support, but Amethyst tried to take it further and be more like Rose and have that relationship with Greg and manipulated him with a "I can't let you do this to me again", as a secret thing they'd do together, but decided to break it off and just avoided each other. In fact with him living in his van and Steven living in a house with the Gems, there is a very (you stay over there away from us while we raise our friend/boss/lover's kid and you can just be the "cool dad" who visits and lives nearby, but we clearly can't trust you or ourselves to be together too much). Also this is one of those shows where you don't know what is really important later on, a rewatching type of show where you catch lines of dialogue, things in the background, behaviors, that just later its like (wait...that was important? That was foreshadowing? Wait was that actually referencing this?)
Yeah, even when I first saw this episode, my mind went to... affair. Sorry I wasn't here hours ago. It's my 21st birthday, and Kraven came out today, so I had vodka for my first legal drink and saw it. Unfortunately, the camera only showed 80% and cut off the subtitles, but I got some movie vouchers and another free drink from the bar... so not a bad day.
OMG!! I'm the same when it comes to typing and reading!! My fingers can fly over a keyborad no problem, but if I try to read my brain jumps over things and I have to go back and read it again.
First off, I love watching people experience the pure magic of Steven Universe for the first time, so I'm pleased to have found you early on in your journey! Secondly - y'all are friggin' adorable. If this blew your mind, then strap in. It's about to get real.
So the way i interpreted the first episode is that the junk joke was just a random throw in line for adults. But I think its the same thing that happened now is what happened then, they were friends who bonded and watched a show together. Then either during roses pregnancy, or stevens birth they had to stop.
just letting you know garnets future vision works based on the variables she knows and that has an effect on the likeliness of that vision. she has blindspots because she is missing crucial information.
THAT EPISODE REALLY WEIRDED ME OUT And I saw that episode with my cousin and he said “Is it me or that was kinda… S**ual Harassment” but I was pretty 50/50 on his opinion, also I still think about to this day that were Greg And Amethyst were a thing in a way
Greg`s uncle`s mansion is very important! Later in the series his uncle dies, Greg sells the mansion (after clearing out some gem monsters haunting it) and gets 10 million dollars for it!
Lil' Butler reminds me so much of the cheesy sitcoms that aired when I was little, especially "Different Strokes" and "The Facts of Life". Even the font of the credits is the same, it has to be deliberate.
I always took this episode to mean that when Greg first met the Gems, he and Amethyst became really good buds. They have similar wnough personalities and interests that they just vibed really well together. Then Greg and Rose became a thing; and it was the classic situation of a really good friend getting into a romantic relationship, and it basically breaking up the friend group. Amethyst lost her bro, and didn't know how to handle it.
I have ADHD and wasn't worried about being dyslexic until I found out that those two things tend to coincide, went from a "Nah, im fine" to a "Oh thats making a whle lot of too much sense, and now... I'm worried. :)"
I’m not Dyslexic but I do type faster than I can read 😂 my fiancé reads SUPER fast. He can finish a book in a day or two but it sometimes takes me a month 😂😅 I’m super excited to see you getting answers as you continue watching 😊
Mosco had the same reaction and same questions as I did watching Maximum Capacity. This episode had me looking up the age-rating for Seven Universe. I’m personally looking forward to Rose’s Scabbard. Buy yeah I thought it would take forever for Mosco to get to Jailbreak. I’m just vibrating with anticipation. This is the episode that made me realize Steven Universe was my favourite THING ever.
Greg and Amethyst both live in a similar vibe, so it's no wonder that they got together to watch Little Butler after Steven was born and Rose Quartz had vanished, when they were lonely and unsure about the future. It's not settled canonically, but it's probable that Greg began to pull away when he realized that spending time with Amethyst was keeping him away from taking care of baby Steven, his primary responsibility. Amethyst likely shapeshifted into Rose at least once to try to keep Greg near her, but that would have backfired as spectacularly as it did in Maximum Capacity. At least Greg has had long experience with Gems, so he knows that they're aliens with personal boundaries utterly different from those of humans. He's thick-skinned enough to forgive Amethyst for her moral lapse, especially since she was desperately trying to make amends the next day. Amethyst's life is difficult enough; she wouldn't want to lose the friendship of either Greg or Steven. The Red Eye was the robot Gem spacecraft that was destroyed in episode two (Laser Light Cannon). It should be noted that Peridot is completely mystified by the words "The Crystal Gems". According to her information she only knows that Gems were "wiped out" on Earth. There's actually a big spoiler in the last part of Marble Madness that won't bear fruit for another three seasons.
i had dyslexia all through elementary and middle school, and got special help like a tutor and it did help, i can read books without much difficulty but i still have to read the same page paragraph or sentence over sometimes and when i get distracted i loose where i was. typing is a lot faster but i tend to add words or not complete sentences cause i'm typing so fast just to get thoughts down so when i go back and reread what i typed im like what was i writing?
Elijah cameo! That was adorable. ☺ I don't think that Amethyst and Greg really had a romantic relationship. I get the impression that it was a one-night thing (probably when they were both lonely and missing Rose) that went badly and ended up ruining their friendship. The Red Eye is the thing that they destroyed with Rose's Laser Light Cannon waaaay back at the very beginning of the series.
I love the show The Nanny to! I just got done watching it this last past year and I already miss it. also the red eye they were talking about is from episode 2 laser light Cannon. where Steven kept saying "if every pork chop were perfect we wouldn't have hot dogs" all the way back at the beginning of the series. I know right? what a call back.❤
In my opinion, Amethyst is really attached to Greg *platonically* and is willing to do ANYTHING to get his undivided attention. They really bonded over common interests, but at some point, Greg started giving her less attention, which led her to the idea of shapeshifting into Rose. It didn't go well, to say the least, and this was what made them stop hanging out.
This is the first time I realized it, but Elijah is WAY different when she's being your girlfriend. I give thanks to your editor, because that was adorable. I totally know what you mean with typing faster than you can type. (I'm pretty sure the only reason my dad doesn't is that he never learned how to type.)Haven't been diagnosed with dyslexia, but I probably am dyslexic.
I hadn't ever really considered Amethyst and Greg as having had a relationship but the way you interpreted it kinda works. It's entirely possible she developed feelings for him when they were hanging out and reacted poorly when he rejected her for Rose, maybe even resorting to shapeshifting trickery judging from Greg's reaction but it's never expounded upon after this episode so who can really say.
Yo, not dyslexic, but I’ve had training in educating students with various learning disabilities including dyslexia. Dyslexia is ABSOLUTELY the kind of thing that’ll slow down a person’s reading without impacting their ability to write or type. This is largely because dyslexia mostly lives in the perceptual parts of the brain that processes visual information, but writing and typing are all about spatial awareness and fine motor control. You know what letters you’re writing/typing because you know them by feel, and you don’t generally need to look in order to know that you’ve gotten them right (barring typos). Personally, I’ve got the flip side of that condition. I’m dysgraphic. That means that the fine motor control associated with getting letters formed when handwriting is out of whack and my handwriting is consequently always going to look a bit like scribbling. Also means i can’t draw for shit, even though I can visualize all the necessary elements of a drawing; there’s some level of signal noise going from brain to hand that I just can’t overcome. It’s easier with typing, but my typing speed tends to be a bit slower than most people. I’m not at ‘hunt and peck’ levels of slow, but it takes me a few extra fractions of a second to be confident that I’m getting my keystrokes right.
The shapeshifting into Rose is one of those moments that make us go, "I love you Amethyst, but that's fucked up."
and now it just triggers flashbacks of earlier this year when the amethyst x Sadie sketches came out

i don't think she was joking at all when she said she had seen Greg's "junk" before

I love seeing you watch this show
Yeah, even when I first saw this episode, my mind went to...
Maximum capacity is such an amazing episode. The subtext of everything is great.
OMG!! I'm the same when it comes to typing and reading!! My fingers can fly over a keyborad no problem, but if I try to read my brain jumps over things and I have to go back and read it again.
Anyone else watching this late at night bc nothing matters or is it just me?
First off, I love watching people experience the pure magic of Steven Universe for the first time, so I'm pleased to have found you early on in your journey! Secondly - y'all are friggin' adorable. If this blew your mind, then strap in. It's about to get real.
the Red Eye was the thing from one of the very first episodes, with the laser light cannons
The Nanny _and_ Schitt’s Creek?! You two are watching quality!
So the way i interpreted the first episode is that the junk joke was just a random throw in line for adults. But I think its the same thing that happened now is what happened then, they were friends who bonded and watched a show together. Then either during roses pregnancy, or stevens birth they had to stop.
19:47 the red eye is the thing that they destroyed with the rose canon that I think it was in the first couple of episodes
They were 100 percent friends with benefits
just letting you know garnets future vision works based on the variables she knows and that has an effect on the likeliness of that vision. she has blindspots because she is missing crucial information.
THAT EPISODE REALLY WEIRDED ME OUT
And I saw that episode with my cousin and he said “Is it me or that was kinda… S**ual Harassment” but I was pretty 50/50 on his opinion, also I still think about to this day that were Greg And Amethyst were a thing in a way
Greg`s uncle`s mansion is very important! Later in the series his uncle dies, Greg sells the mansion (after clearing out some gem monsters haunting it) and gets 10 million dollars for it!
The Red Eye was the thing they shot down in episode 2(?) w/ Rose's light cannons.
The Red Eye was the thing that was destroyed by Rose’s Cannon in “Laser Light Cannon”
Yeah it's heavily implied that after Rose died, Amethyst and Greg did have a fling, but it was toxic and feel apart.
Lil' Butler reminds me so much of the cheesy sitcoms that aired when I was little, especially "Different Strokes" and "The Facts of Life". Even the font of the credits is the same, it has to be deliberate.
I definitely think they made some fireworks together
I always took this episode to mean that when Greg first met the Gems, he and Amethyst became really good buds. They have similar wnough personalities and interests that they just vibed really well together. Then Greg and Rose became a thing; and it was the classic situation of a really good friend getting into a romantic relationship, and it basically breaking up the friend group. Amethyst lost her bro, and didn't know how to handle it.
The Red Eye was from the second episode with Rose's laser cannon.
He can finish a book in a day or two but it sometimes takes me a month 😂😅
I’m super excited to see you getting answers as you continue watching 😊
The sequel to the emergency girlfriend hug from the Mastermind reaction has finally arrived!
She's getting closer y'all...
The red eye was the big flying ball they destroyed in episode 2 :)
10:31 Mosco: Baba are you listening
Elisha: Kind of
I don’t know why but that just kills me
My local arcade added highland cows to the claw machine, safe to say….. I am now accompanied in my watch by Shamus
The Red Eye was the thing from episode 2. They even used that name for it.
The Red Eye is the thing that was watching them wayyyy back in like, Episode 2
I don't think that Amethyst and Greg really had a romantic relationship. I get the impression that it was a one-night thing (probably when they were both lonely and missing Rose) that went badly and ended up ruining their friendship.
The Red Eye is the thing that they destroyed with Rose's Laser Light Cannon waaaay back at the very beginning of the series.
FWIW, you two are so ridiculously, wholesomely adorable. It's like gatorade for my soul "It's got emotional electrolytes"
The mid video hug with your lady was precious! ☺️❤️💛💚
I know right? what a call back.❤
15:22 This is exactly what I experience when I read. Very relatable
Haha, aww. The between-episode hug. Relationship goals. xD
Mosco roaring for lore.
A whole pile of lore, as disorganized as Greg's storage shed, gets dumped into her lap.
Information overload.
You’re not alone, Lass! I read much slower than I write too AND I’m dyslexic.
In my eyes amethyst was like a daughter to him, greg was always busy with rose and steven that she felt left behind
Oh boy
*that episode*
I hadn't ever really considered Amethyst and Greg as having had a relationship but the way you interpreted it kinda works. It's entirely possible she developed feelings for him when they were hanging out and reacted poorly when he rejected her for Rose, maybe even resorting to shapeshifting trickery judging from Greg's reaction but it's never expounded upon after this episode so who can really say.
Hmmm trauma
