You are seriously my idol, man. Holy geezums. You're videos are the ONLY ones I'm excited to see and as soon as I see that you've posted, I never hesitate to click. Oh my word. You've inspired me in so many different ways and I've been trying to achieve digital painting apart from cell shading. Your works are miraculous and always improve day by day. I rarely comment at all but there's just so much I want to tell you and so much art you must be prepared to recieve because holy gosh the artistic side of my soul has been blessed.

Hi I’ve been following you for a couple months, and your art inspired me to draw again :D it was an absolute pleasure to watch your videos and I noticed your style has been shifting from cartoony to realistic shading and details. How do you learn such defined facial muscles? I have been googling canine facial anatomy/expressions but it seems most of them don’t show the most significant muscle groups like those in your artworks. Real doggos’ are pretty hard to see since they are covered in fur... Also, how do you practice shading? Do you study other people’s works, drawing from photographs or just figuring the shines on the fur by yourself?

When I'm tackling something unfamiliar, I usually first just think of the things I do know (vague shapes, vague placement/proportions etc) and then I try filling in the gaps with pure improvisation and visual memory. Trying to nail down those mental images onto a canvas can be quite the learning experience (the more you struggle the more you know that you're making progress once you succeed)
Because if you depend 100% on learning anatomy just by looking at photo reference, then you'll be unprepared when trying to draw the subject in an unfamiliar angle / unfamiliar expression / unfamiliar style.
If you roughly *understand* how musculature can work, you could technically just wing it, and get a somewhat ok-looking image. Then it's just about occasionally checking with reference if you can update your visual library / correct it further.
But alas, you'll have to test what learning method works best for the type of artwork you want to make!! If I were to make studies of canine heads, it would look something like: sta.sh/0bbkhhsq6kc One version doing general geometric shapes and volumes, and the other version taking note of details, fur"patterns".
I went on a quick hunt to find some references that I think either show: facial structure or unusual angle/expression.
      sta.sh/020ecp9f4h6b
It's all about understanding the structure, and being able to detect the subtle changes in shade - understanding the change of planes - and knowing where to exaggerate them in your artwork for aesthetic purposes.
      ----
With shading, it's all about asking the right questions "where does the light come from, what might influence the light (clouds, fog, objects, etc), is the light intensely bright or dim, what color is the light and how does it affect the shadows, is there any bouncelight?"
You can learn from making your own studies, checking out videos, books, or analyzing other artist's work

      ----
When learning on your own, it's basically best to make a habit of looking for new sources of information; keep a blog, make folders, make playlists - collect from any place that might have some helpful tidbits
Hope this was of some help!

    Hello!
In many drawings, you create a new layer with a white object, and you will disassemble the tone on it. After that, everything is displayed on the color image. How do you do it?

    • @Remarin
      @Remarin  6 років тому

Do you mean like what I do at 3:09 ? (If not, feel free to give me a time-stamp of the exact thing you want to know more about!)
If you do mean the shading, then it's all in the "layer settings"! In the window of the layers, at the top you'll see a little bar that says "normal" -> www.polishedpicture.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Blending-Mode-Location_thumb.jpg
There are different "modes", but for shading I switch it to "multiply".
Setting a layer to "multiply" means that: everything you draw on that layer, makes the colors underneath "darker". ( => drawing with pure white on a "multiply" layer is invisible)
The opposite of "multiply" is "screen": everything your draw makes the colors underneath "lighter".
There are more settings that do weird stuff, and when adding randome effects, I usually go through every one to test which looks the best in that situation.
And when I paint my shading, I regularly switch it back and forth between "normal" and "multiply" to check that it looks good. (when I paint, I primarily use the "color picker" to get my colors, but "color picking" from a layer on multiply, won't give you the "original" color of that layer -> thus I have to swtich back to "normal" when painting)
      I recommend playing around!!

I know it's too late to say this.
First of all: Beautiful, a good job well done.
The thing is, that ear. I don't know how many times have you read this but aren't the ears too close to each other?
Most canids and even the reference picture have the ears more in the side of the head.
Maybe it's just that I'm wrong or no one wanted to say you made a fail or something.
Whatever it is, the art and your skills still are so great. And hope you're not lacking on traditional drawing.
    Take care and keep improving.

Thank you very much!! But well first I wouldn't base my own anatomical details on other people's art like that. I'm not saying that artists can't make anatomical accurate depictions, but just like with this picture there's a chance we artist "mistranslate" details because we mainly depend on vague memory or maybe take stylistic choices.
Also, I could now just whip up some quickly googled images of different wolves pointing out how the distance between ears can vary, since animals aren't "perfect clones" of each other, like
      ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/624/cpsprodpb/1EFF/production/_86153970_gastonmaqueda_banffnationalparkgreywolf2011permission.jpg
      and
      www.welt.de/img/vermischtes/weltgeschehen/mobile115065629/3252500487-ci102l-w1024/MACKENZIE-VALLEY-WOLF-canis-lupus-occidentalis-ADULT-SHOWING-TEETH-THREAT-POST.jpg
But the thing is, I'm not a photorealist painter. My aim isn't to be as anatomically accurate as possible and I don't claim my animals to be perfect representations of the real life counterpart. (half of my life, I drew canine legs with human-esque muscles because I thought "it looked nice") Otherwise I wouldn't have drawn the eyes that big either, and I would've only shown a tiny bit of the white-of-the-eyeball if I wanted a more realistic canid. I won't deny that I sometimes still mess up on anatomy, but I sometimes stretch/adjust things too much than realistically possible, just to aid the expressiveness of the drawing.
Maybe it would look more accurate if I shifted the ears to the sides more, but maybe it would also make the silhouette of the figure less readable and maybe it might've made the expression look a bit too sad.
My main goal is to make other people's characters look good. And at the time of drawing this one, putting the ears close together like that felt right. I might change my mind about it in the future, but who knows ;> All I know is that at the moment I like the aesthetic of close-together ears like those on kitsune masks res.cloudinary.com/teepublic/image/private/s--M-xT3TIS--/t_Preview/b_rgb:191919,c_limit,f_jpg,h_630,q_90,w_630/v1499893727/production/designs/1733853_0.jpg

Remarin Aham, I see now how it is. Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to know more abount how you make your artworks. I'm not an expert so i can't say nothing abount how to make your work better, it was to be sure that it is like you wanted it to be. The best of drawing is that the piece doesn't have to be like others want, just how the one making it want, sure you already know that. Love your work, every single one them, they only get better every time. And don't forget to try different methods sometimes :D
