    Good morning 🌞☕
    I'm a wildlife rehabber here in NC & I have a suggestion on your possible possum issue. I specialize in opossums & absolutely love them. You could try putting out a dish of food for them in the area you're having the issue. A trailcam will capture what is really trashing your plants. But, then every evening, move the offering of food closer & closer to the woods & away from your plants. Hopefully that would "train" them to stay away. Things you could offer are fresh veggies, yogurt, fruits, raw paultry with bones, fish & so on. I wouldn't give eggs as you don't want them stealing your eggs. If you have any questions, feel free to message me. Best if luck 🥰👍

      What do you think about setting some live trapping traps to get them a bit upset and then releasing them in the woods? I also think possums are wonderful creatures.

      That would just invite all the other wildlife to join them.

    First, I am addicted to your videos. I tell my wife about them all the time. Now, when you were talking about your raised potato bed you mentioned that the half with whole potatoes had grown larger than the half of the bed with the pieces. I noticed that during your video the half with the potatoes cut into pieces was in the shade. Is that the case the rest of the day, because that could certainly make the difference. My wife and I are absolutely fascinated to see how your potato experiment turns out. We are not homesteaders, but we do live on 55 acres in New Hampshire. You have a long lovely growing season. Our growing season is about an hour and a half in the middle of July. It has been a struggle for us to get things in the ground early enough or keep them in the ground long enough to get decent harvests. Thank you both for sharing your journey with us!

    Those big buckets are nice! I got my hands on some and plant my potatoes in them. One thing I like to do that might be a help for you, I drill holes in the rim and put rope handles on both sides. It makes it very easy to move those heavy pots.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 I just run a piece of rope through the holes and tie a knot on both ends to keep it tucked under the lip but it can't slip through the holes 👍🏻 I used to just lift by the rim but the ropes have been a huge upgrade!

      Where can I buy those black buckets??

    • @lovemyfamily60
      @lovemyfamily60 4 роки тому

      TheLissabee I think they said they get them from the dairy farmers...I believe some kind of feed or minerals come in them.

    • @bearrivermama6414
      @bearrivermama6414 4 роки тому

      TheLissabee you can get new ones (similar to these) from feed stores and hardware stores. I found some at menards for $8 a piece which I thought was a good price. You can also use the really big flower pots and add handles. I've found those xx-large flower pots at garage sales for a buck or two. Menards had liners for the half whisk barrels. They work very well too. Hope that gives you a couple of ideas. You could check with livestock farmers and ranchers in your area and see if they have them. (Left over mineral block buckets that is what they did)

    My aunt always grew pinto beans and then canned them as GREEN BEANS! She simply picked them early, cut them up and threw in some of the beans that had been shelled. Obviously she harvested them before they were dried on the vine. In our family, they are famous. Now I sooo want to learn her recipe. I want to say thank you so much for your channel. My husband and I have learned so many things that have helped us in our own garden. We have been encouraged to venture further into the world of self sustainability. I know I am blessed to already have the basic skills of gardening and preservation but your videos have taught me more and I am eager to try new things. Thank you and God bless!

    Seeing large gardens and having my small garden, makes me envious in some ways, and relieved in others. Just witnessing the garden growing, and the bounty setting would be wonderful. But with larger gardens comes more pest and disease issues, more potential pest issues, and when the fruit is ready, endless hours of harvesting, tying plants to trellises, removing dying or diseases leaves and branches, cleaning the harvest, and preserving in the heat of summer. I guess I will be happy with my too small garden. If I were younger like you 2, and had someone to work with me, your gardens would be my playground.

    A big help for those who may have limited resources or budget for composting deep buckets or beds-use rotted logs or branches, pour a thick layer of manure over the top and then add your dirt. Burned limbs/logs are great as well, and they provide lots of good nutrients under your plant babies. It's especially great if you have HUGE raised beds you need to fill.

    You should look into red worms for making own compost, you’re in a good climate for them. They are a gardener’s best friend! Instead of buying your compost you’ll be able to make your own in little time and no turning the compost or anything. So healthy for the garden!

    • @chrismoore9686
      @chrismoore9686 4 роки тому +1

      Yes!!! Not only do they make great compost quickly, the worm 'castings' aka poop make it even better. Get red wigglers worms from a bait store.

      I honestly would have thought with all your animals and wood vegetation on the property you would produce all the compost you could ever use. We have an 1 acre total garden space in use and 4 horses supply more manure then we need along with the old contaminated hay. We add in our kitchen and plant scrapes. We even composted a few of the farm animal carcasses in a couple piles. Road kill works well also.
      Between all the manure and vegetation/leaves etc you certainly have the resources should you choose to make tons of great compost. A good quality chipper if you have a decent amount of forest area is worth it. Overall decomposed wood makes some of the very best loamy compost. You can also make your own biochar to add to it. That would make a cool video as well.

    Try dehydrating the green's and saving them in a jar. You can use them in soup's and salad's during the winter. Rain Country does it, she has video's on it. I got my dehydrator and will be doing it this year. We've been building our raised beds and will start planting this weekend. The temp's have been all over the place. Trying to get hoop's/low tunnel's over alot of the bed's. Sure wish spring had come on time and been really a good one. Would be done with most of the building and planting. But making the best of thing's. Thank's so much for all the great info/video's. Wish my garden was as far along as your's and as beautiful. Thing's are looking wonderful at your place. Stay safe and healthy. God bless

    I take branches and place them around my buckets so as to keep animals and our cat out...she thinks it’s great to crawl up into a plant and lay down for a snooze.
    I bought Tulle fabric, it’s 54” by 40 yards from Amazon ...I think it was $12.....and I cut a piece and wrap it around the sticks and clip with clothespins to keep insects out of my brassicas ..works great also when plants are small to keep squirrels and chipmunks from having a snack...

    Suggestion: can use a bungee cord to keep a load secure on a hand-truck. For example, I have 2'x2'x3'H racks I built for firewood that I can move around with a hand-truck alone. Once they're balanced, the bungee cord will account for any bumps, etc. Same thing with garbage cans of compost.

    We used to do a half acre of potatoes. Dad would plow a row & I'd follow behind & drop in potato pieces & he'd go next & cover each row. Then leave them alone. Later brush hogged then ran the plow & pick thru the ground. Then ran plow through cross ways. Pick thru, plow 1 more time. Any potato that was cut from plow was used immediately the rest was put on shelves of wire to dry & store... often we had potatoes all winter. We were lazy farmers...lol

    One good tip to use way less dirt in your large containers used for more shallow rooted plants is to fill the bottom 1/2 of the container with old water bottles (with the lids on to keep them from getting crushed), and then fill the rest of the way with your dirt. Saves dirt and money, and makes the very large containers much lighter :). Also, check out the Ruth Stout method for potatoes! Sooooooo easy, and yields such a gigantic harvest!

      And bigger pots are always better! They dry out less and don't get as hot in the summer as smaller ones. Great recycling too!

    Everything is looking great guys. I love watching you two all the time. You work so hard and everything looks great. Thanks for showing us how the watering system works, it does a great job. Sara you could put tullé over them all the way across those buckets to help keep the opossums out, it's not that expensive and works great and will last for several years. love you guys again and God bless.🌻🌻🌻🙏💕😊

    A raised bed of strawberries would be great! They do well for early summer harvest in your part of the Ozarks. You could make preserves for the winter.

    I am really looking forward to see how your potatoes do under the woven ground cover. I planted the same way this year. I have 2 40' rows of Red Pontiac and 2 of Kennebec. I tilled the area, added leaf mold. Added the cover and burned holes every 12". Drip tape on top with an emitter over each hole. I planted my seed pieces 4 to 6 inches deep. All have come up. My Red Pontiac were first and are starting to bloom right now. I have had lots of criticism of not being able to hill them. I think the cover will keep the potatoes from getting sun burn, depress weeds definitely. When done, pull the tape, cut the tops, pull the cover and start digging! I guess we will both see.

    Not much space so am doing a container gardening. Had my grandkids over for the weekend and made some potatoe salad for them. Well the potatoes had started to grow some roots. They asked if they could plant them. Well am nana so I went got some soil we used disposable cups. We planted those skins with roots. Am thinking there's no way they will grow. But they sure did and kept growing. So that's the start of my container garden. And of course I had to get some more for them to plant flowers, tomato, pepper,squash ,zucchini these were bought at a Lowe's as transplants. So will see how our container garden grows

    Just an FYI (I’m in Texas County MO), my summer squash is doing FABULOUS in the High Tunnel as everything else is bolting.

    I planted potatoes for the first time this year. I used the woven ground fabric like i do with my veggie garden and they are looking great. Zone 6a has been crazy weather wise we had snow 4 weeks ago. Everything looks great. I need to get ahold of some of those crystelx pots... Great resource.

    Potato bed looks great. Possibly trim back trees, not enough sun on end of bed. ☺

    Can you please do a vlog re: selling your produce, etc. at the farmer’s market? Is the farmer’s market your only source of revenue (other than UA-cam)? Please speak on this aspect of homesteading. Thanks!!!

    To Keep the cut worms from cutting the plants. Take a small twig . Push it into the ground next to the stem of the plant. Worms can't wrap around the stem of the plant. A nail works just as well.

    Looking good Kevin & Sarah!! Thank you for the update, I was really wondering about how the potatoes were doing. Please keep doing updates throughout the season. Also, if you could do a video on how you deal with pest control that would be helpful! I planted green beans the first time this year and the slugs are decimating them! Thank you so much for you videos!

      I hear you. I mulched with newspaper to keep the weeds down and had the worst slug infestation, never could get rid of them it was so discouraging.

      you might look into diatomaceous earth. i had never heard of it but someone recommended it for helping with some bugs i found in my flour and other things. in reading about it it was mentioned that it was good for getting rid of slugs. it also seems to be good for just about everything. hope you check into it. let me know.

    Love your videos. I do such a great job. Your gardens look great and will surely keep u busy. I am doing just one small raised bed and some pots. We have had a cold spring so not much is doing all that good, except the tomatoes. I cannot garden much but I do like fresh tomatoes and pickles. Have fun gardening.

    I'm just about done with summer squash. I'm experimenting with Cucuzzi to see if it will be a good replacement for my family. The squirrels gave you a black walnut tree in your onion bed! I love how everything is set up and the different experiments. Can't wait to see how it all turns out. Killed my first cucumber beetle of the season today.

    There is alot more shade on the half potato bed, the full potatoes seem to have full sun. That may be a contributing factor. BLESSINGS, -Kate

    I also tried my potatoes under the ground cover this year for the first time. I had to remove the cover because the plants came up not matching the holes. They are doing amazing though. I used shredded leaves as a mulch.
