@@btf_flotsam478 I've stopped watching any GDQ unless for TAS. The drama behind being selected is cringe but removing the funniest run with amazing/horrible impressions and banning the runner forever is just dumb as hell.

I wish I could have been in that second guy’s head when he decided “alright the live crowd for this charity event isn’t laughing at the constant suicide jokes and my mates seem super uncomfortable, let’s see how a domestic abuse joke lands”
And then he intentionally soft locked the game at the end, said he likes wasting people's time, and made a joke about murdering the audience. Truly tone deaf.
As someone who works at a hotel, I can tell you that unless we thought someone was stealing cards from rooms still in use, hotel cards are the last thing we care about. Theyre a dime a dozen. Even if someone was trying to use them to get access, cards can be deactivated right from the front desk. Thats insane even if it WAS true, it is a 5 second fix.
Maybe there was more than just the cards at the end of the day (as I've heard about stalking). But even if it was simply the cards, considering he was a member and representative of the organization, stealing cards is more than worthy of banning them from an event (more than most other cases in this video). It's a simple act of hooliganism that doesn't cause much issue, sure, but holy crap get out of here if you're doing it. It's middle-school level immaturity and stupidity.
@@Edeinawc yeah I can understand not wanting to be misrepresented. Personally I wouldn't think they were, but I see how they could be to other people or businesses

I have so many hotel cards, I find them constantly when going through boxes of stuff. I actually try to make an effort to return them and I always wind up forgetting one tucked away in my wallet. I average around one card per day I spend at a hotel because I always lose them and ask for more, then find one in each pair of pants I took with me when I unpack back at home. I'm probably on someone's shitlist, good thing I suck at games.
Bonesaw's run is legit the best and most entertaining run I have seen from GDQ. His ban is ridicilous and you can clearly tell that the majority wanted him unbanned and speedrun again. Hopefully he will submit another run soon.
He won't. He actually stated he is more or less banned from GDQ period, even attending runs. Someone wanted him to attend a run as a guest and the lead for GDQ (his name escapes me) looked at Bonesaw and asked in a pretty rude tone if he'd be making more Owen Wilson jokes. He said no, was allowed to attend as a guest, but before the run could start (iirc) he was removed for fear he MIGHT start Owen Wilson jokes again. The higher ups at GDQ don't like him even if he was hilarious and made that GDQ significantly better.
the reason why that run was so funny was for 1 simple reason. it didn't feel like an normal GDQ run where everyone is trying to be as PC as possible. it felt like a bunch of friends sitting in someones living room just having a blast together.
@@LenzTL that's defo not true, the amount of exposure is beyond worth it. I know of at least one runner that submitted a spliced run, in a bus game if I remember correctly.
Donation incentives include: Permanent/irreversible bans, reposting the roster because we felt like changing who gets to play, and not double checking anything because we are pretty lazy.
Streifel he wasnt banned for the Owen Wilson impressions, he was banned because he told viewers to tweet at the airline that brought him to GDQ, because he had severe delays. Its a stupid reason, but not as arbitrary as Owen Wilson jokes. Jawibae does not give any good reason on why he thinks Owen Wilson was the reason.
@@alanpendragon1316 It's easy to criticize the venue and their decisions without resorting to subtle transphobia. @@sweetwheatsy my trans"phobia"isn't subtle; it's rather overt. They deserve proper care in a mental ward, not the butcher shop where they get their sausages chopped off
Sadly, yeah. I think I stopped watching it in 2020. From then on I only watched the occasional highlights on UA-cam--and now I almost totally forget about the event entirely. The online only events were a major factor in killing it for me, because there was so much less excitement without a couch and a community there backing them up. Plus the recent lineups for games have been pretty obscure and less interesting to watch (seems like a lot less TAS-block too, which was always my favorite). Unfortunately the whole eggshells thing is part of growing a business like that. The bigger you get, the more PR you have to do, and the less mistakes you can make--so everything is way overprotected. Definitely kills the initial close knit gamer vibe it used to have.
I understand the need for GDQ to keep its content at least somewhat "clean" but vague rules being applied in heavy-handed and less than transparent ways isn't the way to do it. Of the specific incidents mentioned in this video, only the suicide joke guy seemed like a fair ban.
Id still ban the possible potential mass murder tweet or at least pull the run. Suicide joke guy... nah id have cut the run short or walked up and told him to stop with the joeks if your gunna continue to play.
@@Truth_Hurts_Bad its not that he just says it, hes saying it over and over and over. @@L33T_Taco The deciding factor would be that they donate to suicide prevention, then I could understand a little more. But, it's still just mildly annoying @ best. Have a good one, buddy.
Bonesaw should have been given a yearly spot after that Jak and Daxter run. I've never laughed harder during a GDQ run. He had the whole room and chat going wild. Everybody loves that run, except maybe Owen Wilson and Ben Affleck.
I regularly rewatch that run too for some easy laughs. It's the only GDQ run I have watched in full. If they were all like this one I'd probably bother tuning in for the events on Twitch. Given how they reacted to the jokes and such, kind of tells me a lot about the type of content GDQ is looking to curate. Watered down and boring. Haven't had much interest in watching future GDQ events since.
@@kaladan1890 I can guarantee that Owen Wilson never even heard a peep of anything related to a charity speedrun event. GDQ became way too corporatized after 2014-2015 and it sucked any fun out of the concept of just a bunch of regular people raising money by playing games fast. I miss the days when naegleria had to duct tape his mouth shut every time he swore, spikevegeta was the only announcer for reading donations, and the most viewed things about the entire event weren't just cringe compilations. The last good run at a gdq event was zallard1's blindfolded punchout wii.
LOL TELL ME ABOUT IT!!. Reddit is (generally) just dumb and toxic Af!! gamesdonequick in of itself is cringe. a lot just dead wires. How they carry themselves is just cringe. Asking why TAS is essentially just retro games, and why they don't do mondern.: ban. Ok now whait a second banning someone for not getting why they don't run mondern games that people are more likely to be into and relate to. WTF.
@gorkskoal9315 I am not the most knowledgable of the inner workings of TAS runs, however I believe I know why more modern games aren't TASed. Due to the way that TASes are made, they usually need to be older games, because they require emulators which can do things like slow down to advance frames, save state, encode stuff properly, etc. There are some more modern games that are TASed, though not as many, probably due to 3D games being even harder to TAS all that well (with a few exceptions). But I also agree, seeing more modern games would be cool, and being banned was dumb as hell.
Bonesaw577's run was probably the funniest run I've ever watched on GDQ... I think they just banned him to try and save face over the embarrassing "Sorry AirCanada" tweet... They didn't even bother checking to see if it was even being tweeted out lol how irresponsible can you be at your job
He deserved to be banned for the quality of the gameplay which was really bad. Definitely entertaining but he didn't exactly explain much either. That being said GDQ isn't entertaining anymore, Bonesaw and Werster were definitely very entertaining but GDQ is way too "family friendly" now for funny commentary like that.

Bonesaw update; the guy did a video quite recently (as of the time of this comment) basically saying he's effectively blacklisted as he was barred from couch commentating despite his ban only being for submitting speedruns and only got on the couch after many protests. The staff also treated him like shit since that initial ban, prodding him to try and say something to drop him in hot water, cropping him from press photos apart from one where his face was covered, a spokeswoman making a snide remark after the event that could refer to him and even banned donations from reading out his name. I dunno what their beef is. They still haven't explicitly said what it was but I feel something deeper is going on.
I'm usually one for edgy jokes, but gamerpro's... I can see why he got banned. Suicide jokes with proper setups can be hilarious. But when you throw em out like that... yikes.

@@guthetanuki256 this is true of pretty much any kind of controversial comedy. The MORE controversial you want to be, the funnier you also got to be. It's pretty much why Richard Pryor was able to get away with his routines in a time when people were considerably more stringent on entertainers.

Alaskan Pipeline I still don’t understand how that is grounds for a permanent ban? If the joke was crude or racist I’d be able to understand that, but it was a dumb impression. Definitely seems like someone on top was looking for ANY reason to ban him
Bonesaw is a national treasure. The Americans that run GDQ just dont understand that trolling Air Canada is a part of our nation's history. It's basically a crown corporation so we are legally allowed to troll.
That woman who wore the maga hat kinda had it coming tho. I'm a biased leftist but if no political demonstrations are allowed then so be it, though zero tolerance is bullshit.
@@kbolternorris2676 funny thing is shes a hardcore leftiest and transgender. She did it as a joke, thats why they had the hat. If gdq wants to avoid any extra controversy, they have to be consistent. They can't let anyone slide on policy violations because it opens the door to other people doing the same thing.
GDQ: You’ve been banned for showing political influence on our stream using a maga hat Runner: But I didn’t wear a maga hat... GDQ: Y-yeah well you unplugged a thing from the w-wall. Banned
Im really starting to feel that these kinda rules are infringing on peoples freedom of expression and speach. Like, I would say no TALKING about political issues while streaming is a viable rule, but banned because you support the president of the U.S. by wearing a hat? GDQ can go fuck themselves. They think themselves more important than they really are. Like, even in the gaming community, GDQ is still not considered mainstream. It's mostly speedrunners and game breakers. That's a small subset of the gaming community. Yeah they may raise a lot of money, but they're nowhere neer as important as they think they are. If they're not careful, they're going to over exert themselves and no one is going to want to attend and be bound by rediculious rules and regulations put in place to coddle the weakest people. I know we play video games guys, but we're still adults. Quit acting like a nazi youth camp.
The Bonesaw run was really fun. Dude was borderline delirious from exhaustion and it made for hilarious commentary. Once he was banned, I stopped watching GDQ.
I thought that companies, that do charity, should be as transparent as possible with their actions. Here's couple things to improve: If you ban someone, state your banning reasons propriety. How in the world could anyone follow your rules, if they don't even know why some people get banned. Its bad enough that followers must try to find answers and speculate what banned person COULD have done. Second, if you try to hide your decision making, how could people trust you with their money? Don't get me wrong, I love speed running events, but if I give money to charity, they should be transparent business with all their actions. "We raised 1 million to charity!" and then they give 100k to where it should go. But hey, this is just me speculating, nothing wrong with that.
you should pose this to every big tech company in the world right now. then, realize there's been a pattern emerging for the past decade, and that you need to resist it at all costs.
It's a real shame because the GDQ's attitude towards streamers has done more to hurt their event than any of the streamers they have banned. Raising money for charity is great and all, but I'd rather find a charity event run by less irritating people.
The rulers were looser till they got more views then they tightened the reins and runners became more scared to joke around which is half the fun of watching them.
I stopped watching GDQ after Bonesaws ban. His run was one of the most entertaining and funny runs I've ever seen, and he got ALOT of donations for GDQ. It just goes to show how corporate they got. How little they care for the fun and enjoyment of the gamers.
@@LaskyLabs Honestly glad I don't speedrun (maybe in the future), because if I do and ever make it to GDQ it is over for them. I don’t think there has ever been a run that was as entertaining as Bonesaw’s. It was pretty clear after his ban that they only wanted professional speed runners with zero personality.
I've seen the same in the Fighting Game Community. They just want family-friendly sponsor-friendly commentators and events like EVO will ban hilarious people like Yipes just because they're seen as too risky in favor of corporate and boring looking guys that will never ever swear.
@@aliceinwonder8978 "Family friendly" basically requires you to sanitize your personality. Esports commentators at official events all sound the same. The best ones are at the local scenes.
In almost every case, a policy being "zero tolerance" actually just means that the ones enforcing the policy will refuse to evaluate the situation with any degree of reason or nuance and opt for the most extreme response even if it causes unnecessary harm
I still watch GDQ content, but they seem to get worse every year with the way they treat a lot of runners. We get more and more stories from runners who were banned for unknown reason or because a higher up in staff just doesn't like them. Even if most of it happens behind the scenes it puts a bad taste on my mouth to support them with a sub.
I was so confused as to why so many of the comments on this video were complaining about trans people, and then I finished the video and saw the maga hats, and it all made sense.
Little did they know, that banning someone out of the blue for no specified reasons can affect someone's mental significantly, especially if said runner loves the event so much. Kinda defeats one of their purposes, doesn't it
@@inxine Okay, imagine being in a group you consider a big part of your life, probably for many years now, and the ONE event you get to actually meet up with many many friends of yours just boots you for no apparent reason. Yes, you're completely right. Like a lot of things, it starts off small and well intentioned, then as it grows they get an inflated ego and the people running the show get power hungry or a straight-up god complex as well as it becomes all about the money and/or views rather than the original mission or values. In the case of GDQ, it seems people can be blacklisted if they simply don't like you... and the whole idea of the alleged harassment and poor treatement of some of those people, by the same staff and organization that would seem to want to appear all squeaky clean tells you all you need to know.
It’s so important that ESA exists. We can’t let GDQ have a monopoly on big speedrunning events. Even though ESA isn’t nearly as popular, they’ve already kinda established themselves. I just hope they don’t end up the same way as GDQ.
I was watching Bonesaw live. It was amazing and super comical. Super amazing commentary, wonderful impressions, and just a great Jak and Daxter run. Really wish him and the couch came back.
There seems to be some cardinal rules that are zero tolerance. One is about targeted harassment. Telling people to flame air Canada with tweets (even as a joke) if the run goes poorly is engaging in targeted harassment. Was is that bad, personally I think not. However, when you have a company that has a zero tolerance policy on certain things, it is well zero tolerance.

I'm not really sure what's going on at GDQ, but they make me really uneasy. Being a non-profit, I think that they have to be a lot more transparent. All of the vagueness and secrecy just makes me wonder why is there a need for secrecy? I really wish that someone more sensible would step in to make fun speed running events.
That gamepro one is so, so bad. I don't know why he thought that was a good idea. Even the short clips you showed were so hard to watch. But good video, thank you for putting it together. And agree on that Bonesaw run being one of the funniest runs from a GDQ event.

I don't blame bonesaw one bit on going elsewhere to raise money for charity. To this day that run is in my top 5 best speedruns (not from gdq but all others) they had fun made some bank for the charity and cause apparently one of the staffers was a owen wilson fan he got banned. This is why MAGA supporters are allowed to have rallies; it would be dangerous to try to forbid them from that, since that would completely go against the whole First Amendment.

In the case of GDQ, it seems people can be blacklisted if they simply don't like you... and the whole idea of the alleged harassment and poor treatement of some of those people, by the same staff and organization that would seem to want to appear all squeaky clean tells you all you need to know.
This is simply the best comment you could go for using a maximum of 10 words

*WELCOME TO THE BAN ZONE*
I'm dead, I wasn't expecting this :D
ONLY BANS INSIDE GDQ RUNNERS
This is why ESA is x4 better. They seem to not care about anything other than the vibe and the speedrun
It’s so important that ESA exists. We can’t let GDQ have a monopoly on big speedrunning events. Even though ESA isn’t nearly as popular, they’ve already kinda established themselves. I just hope they don’t end up the same way as GDQ.
Esa also ensures a much fairer split of consoles/systems, compared to gdq who just want their blocks to be 80% Nintendo nostalgia circle jerks.
Whats esa? I need to support them
The Sedaiv European Speedrun Assembly. It’s like GDQ but actually respectable
@@RossMoney24 looks like I'm getting a passport. I'll gladly attend as a speed runner. Thanks bro
I was watching Bonesaw live. It was amazing and super comical. Super amazing commentary, wonderful impressions, and just a great Jak and Daxter run. Really wish him and the couch came back.
The Bonesaw ban baffles me - that Jak & Daxter run was one of the funniest AGDQ runs of all time
There seems to be some cardinal rules that are zero tolerance. One is about targeted harassment. Telling people to flame air Canada with tweets (even as a joke) if the run goes poorly is engaging in targeted harassment. Was is that bad, personally I think not. However, when you have a company that has a zero tolerance policy on certain things, it is well zero tolerance.
You're not allowed to have fun at GDQ.
@@joshdavis3743 I mean, you don't even have to think it "wasn't that bad" PERSONALLY...

GDQ: PERMANENTLY BANNED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of these were pretty egregious, but with others the bias and lack of professionalism is uncomfortably obvious. GDQ really needs new management.
These videos really prove to me that GDQ isnt about speedrunning, its about being a boy's club for only the people they like. If they dont like you, youre not allowed to sit with them.
Not even a boys club boys don’t get offended as much as GDQ does
it's a woke leftard club for people with special needs and far away from the real world.
Dont assume the gender of the club
@@-pressxtostart- figure of speech, but yeah it is 98% male
its more of a they/them club, honestly. this type of self important, sanctimonious, hall monitor environment almost exclusively exists within groups of middle aged women & "AMAB" communists.
No mention of how Clint Stevens got banned for smoking weed in the bathroom and setting the fire alarm off. Feel like the ball was kinda dropped because of this.
And for them not letting his girl on the couch
That second one was hard to watch. Understood that one being banned.
bonesaw's run is my favorite gdq run of all time and i lost massive respect when they banned him for essentially no reason
To be honest if they literally said " Stop " And you dont stop
Imagine you have a stop
And youre chef tell you to stop doing that
And you just still do it
You will lose that job in most cases.
not gonna lie, if you had a name like "gamepro011" I'd ban you too.
I’ll never understand how full-blown corporations can get away with acting like children. It’s embarrassing

@@TheEvilCheesecake Werster is terrible i agree, but the pokemon community as a whole is a dumpster fire
Man I remember watching that Bonesaw run live. Very likely one of the most enjoyable times I've had watching AGDQ.
...Though the jokes were pretty repetitive. It was a good time either way. Sad that he's probably "quasi-banned" and likely on a blacklist or something.
He was delirious from exhaustion. I'm amazed he was even able to do his run.
Speed runner: What happened? Why am I banned?
SGDQ: For asking too many questions.
That gamepro one is so, so bad. I don't know why he thought that was a good idea. Even the short clips you showed were so hard to watch. But good video, thank you for putting it together. And agree on that Bonesaw run being one of the funniest runs from a GDQ event.
GDQ Staffer's out here really being the Reddit Mods of the Speedrunning Word.
Everytime I hear something about them it feels like GDQ is a great event organized by people with bad judgment and perhaps more problematically no ability to admit mistakes.

Never forget that Trihex was banned as well
GoTree64 But why?
Is Caleb banned too?

Trihex didn't deserve it. Dude's a pillar of the speedrunning community and super chill.
Bonesaw's run of Jak and Dexter is one of the best ever. I watch it from time to time and it is always hilarious.
Werster was probably also banned/on a heavy warning for saying the n-word in one of the GDQ's prior.
yikes. sounds like there's personal beef in some of these, and that's really stupid.
There was, Bonesaw made a video on it and basically stated that he was banned from submitting runs, he was on the cough for another and when they asked him where he was going and he said to the cough for a run, the organiser had to be pulled in for it, he was allowed but cut out of any picture taken during the event.
Those hats should've said "Make GDQ Great Again"
I don't blame bonesaw one bit on going elsewhere to raise money for charity. To this day that run is in my top 5 best speedruns (not from gdq but all others) they had fun made some bank for the charity and cause apparently one of the staffers was a owen wilson fan he got banned. That's just stupid and I know gdq (as much as I love the runs) are getting more and more strict and "unbending" where the slightest joke will get you banned. That's one definite way to keep ppl from running. I still love them (atm) but I prefer RPGLB cause they don't have a stick up their ass
GDQ rules in a nutshell: "We don't like you, you're permanently banned for a totally legitimate reason we won't take the time to explain"
If you choose to appear on a channel, then you are subject to that channel's rules, and you will get banned if you don't follow them.
All discussion forums on the Internet clearly specify this exact thing in their rules, usually along the lines "this forum has the right to delete any of your posts that break the rules, without warning".
@@Peter_1986 No one is saying GDQ can't ban or remove whoever they want from their events. They are criticizing the flimsy or vague reasons for the bans.
@@olivercharles2930
Well, I can agree that some of their bans have been a bit weird.
I never really liked how they apparently removed a video just because someone in the audience was wearing a MAGA cap;
I am personally definitely not a supporter of that movement, however I do believe in freedom of expression, so I believe that people should be allowed to be present with that kind of clothing without becoming a huge controvery.
This is why MAGA supporters are allowed to have rallies;
it would be dangerous to try to forbid them from that, since that would completely go against the whole First Amendment.
@@Peter_1986yeah, I bet you hold the same opinion to the channels you dont like.
I get it's a big charity event and all, but my lord is GDQ run by a bunch of babies that have no business running an event or handling pr. It's like a race between them and Twitch to see who blows up first
For me GDQs action in this video does way more damage to their brand than anything anyone said or did.
They're slaves to their charities who give them a cut from donations. The charities are made up of wealthy holier-than-thou SJW's who want to cancel everything they don't approve of.
that gif of the guy crying and wiping his tears with banknotes
The time when the gdq staff banned touhou plushies from the couch and stream for a bullshit reason was the time I stopped watching them.
Seems mutually beneficial that you did.
I fell in love with watching GDQ videos but I quickly lost interest when I realized how corrupt they can be with these issues. They're more worried about their image than treating runners fairly. And a temporary ban and continued denial of submissions is a permanent ban.
GDQ needs a real competitor and replacement.
What's been banned from GDQ is the comment section
It's a shame Bonesaw got banned because his run was one of the funniest to watch at GDQ.
I always thought the leading minds behind gdq were gamers and so who wanted a big speed run event but to see that, it really gives me the feeling that those people are just some buisnes man who don't give damn
When SDA was over it, it was.
Businessmen, no. "Political activists", yes.
gamers famously always have good politics and make sensible decisions, famously.
a lot of misunderstood self deprecation in here

It's a shame he got banned but it was totally worth it 😁
Imagine caring enough about a sponge bob speed runner to go out of your way for years trying to get him banned from submitting a speed run for a few years. How lame of a life do you have to have to do that?
Leftwing ideologists usually have low-value stuff going on like that.
They should have a cheaters category where they have only the notorious cheaters play in front of an audience and explain their trickery or prove they are legit runners or whatever, i think it would be cool like having a drugged division in the olympics
That would actually be kinda interesting.
A drugged version of professional sports would be professional sports.
