  • Siri Remote Comparison - Old vs New
Earlier this year, Apple released the new, updated Apple TV 4K, the main highlight of which was a greatly improved Siri Remote. But should you pay to upgrade to one, particularly if you've already got an Apple TV? In this video, I'll compare the old with the new, and try to help you make a decision.

I have the original 4K Apple TV and when I tell you the new remote is a MASSIVE improvement. I love how thick and hefty it is so hopefully it won’t get lost as easily. I do like how the click wheel can still operate as a touchpad, as I did like that on the old one. The volume buttons don’t work for my TV, but I did expect that as the old remote didn’t either. But I think it’s worth the $59 if you already have an Apple TV.

Did anyone know that on the older remote if you held down the tv button and then clicked the touchpad it would turn off the Apple TV box

I agree, my supervisor at work won a first gen Apple 4K TV a few months ago at a conference and the company we work for is a fiber internet company and we use streaming for TV and one of our customers is having issues with our app and I got to setup the Apple TV to test our app to see if I can reproduce the same issue and I think the swipe controller is awesome and different once you learn how it works

Overall good redesign. I wish they would've added backlit keys to the new remote.

Agreed, I can never remember which button does what, especially in the dark while watching a film.

I try to go by the indent on the back button and just memorize the rest over time. As soon as your finger goes over the indent you know where you are without having to look. I’m pretty sure that’s why it’s indented in the first place by design is to develop a type of “muscle memory” over time. I would like the remote to backlit though, you think it would be when a replacement remote cost a whopping $70 😬

I do, The Gen 4 TV4K remote has accelerometer to play games where you need to ‘swing’ the remote, the new Siri Remote doesn’t have that, and having 4th (bedroom) and 5th gen (lounge) TV4K’s I’ve swapped the remotes over, as more space to ‘swing’ in the lounge to play games that require the accelerometer version remote, I prefer the Siri Remote but why they didn’t have it with an accelerometer is beyond me.

The old remote is by far my favorite. I’ve used the new remote for the past year and I finally switch back and I love it.
When pausing, skipping forward, strubbing, etc. the old remote works much much better. The new remote had promise but it’s rare that the app you’re using will take it vantage of the new circular wheel on the remote. The touchpad is much smoother and has more features like tapping, clicking or swiping. The new remote only has clicking and swiping.

The new remote sucks because accidental swipes are too easy when using the dpad. The design is just stupid.

There is no gyroscope in the new remote I think you missed that point

    • @ProperHonestTech
      @ProperHonestTech  3 роки тому

Yes, good point, I did miss that from the video. I must admit, I used the gyroscope function so little in the original, I don't think I noticed it was gone this time around!

My son has one on his ATV. It takes some getting used to, but I enjoy the presence of a MUTE button...otherwise I have to find the Yamaha app on my iPhone...log into it...and mute the amplifier, directly. So the MUTE is a big deal for me...especially if the phone rings while something is playing that can't be paused. I have both an ATV 4 and and first generation ATV 4K (I've had ATV's since the first one in 2007...which Steve Jobs called his hobby)....so I don't know whether the new remote will work with the earlier one or not...need to research that. The earlier version is connected to a 1080p projector in my media room (so no need for 4K). Anyhow, as always, a good review.

I upgraded my remote last week. I knew I’d love the redesign but I think I misunderstood some of its functionality. I was under the impression that it was a universal remote that I could also use as a regular tv remote, but I’m not able to figure out how to connect it as a regular tv remote.
It also cannot be paired with more than one TV without unpairing it from one and pairing it with another, but I cannot figure out how to unpair it. Any ideas? Maybe you can do another video on its functionality of what it can and cannot do.

The new Apple TV remote can change the volume on your TV, and power down your TV along with your Apple TV box when you're done watching, but that's as far as cross-functionality goes I'm afraid.
As for swapping out remotes, general consensus seems to be that you don't 'unpair' an old remote, rather you force pair a new remote, whilst keeping the old remote sufficiently out of range - discussions.apple.com/thread/8593454

Just ordered the remote for my current Apple TV 4K, I was lucky enough to get 10% off through work so I decided to go for the new style remote because I do use Apple TV for all my streaming services and UA-cam etc, plus I was getting extremely frustrated with how over responsive and sometimes unresponsive that touchpad is. I’m looking forward to trying the new design.

Yes, welcome to the stressful, annoying Apple Club and their new devices. They are a treacherous company and I wish they would go far far away. Like into another solar system. If you call they just persuade to buy new stuff. If you have older versions, keep them. They work, new stuff from phones, iPads, laptops, Apple TV are maddening, apple is laughing all the way to bank. sadistic. Doing NOTHING, THEY JUMP around, intrude with ads. This remote is awful. Following instructions and wow, result is a big nothing. I need subtitles, I can no longer watch tv because of APPLE TV, WHICH BEFORE was a pleasure.

    • @ProperHonestTech

On the remotes? I don't think you can change them. If you meant 'charge' them, you do this with a lightning cable (the same one that charges your iPhone). Both have a port at the bottom.
