  • The15th installment of my 5000 mile solo road trip to the Balkans on board the mighty BMW R1250 GS Adventure.
In this episode, I depart Sarajevo and cream myself at the Serbian Border.
Permission to Torque is a Mental Health movement set up to show others that you "get it" by displaying a discrete symbol for others to take comfort in. Its not about sitting around in a circle feeling sorry for yourself, its about shared experience and getting out there to find out what makes us happy - this is the aim of my trip and why I am sharing it on UA-cam, the good days and the inevitable bad ones too.
I hope you enjoy the journey with me and find it at least vaguely useful! :)

Thank you Chris, these videos are keeping me reasonably content as I used to go for a random ride whenever my brain fogging got depressing but just as the weather finally returned allowing me to ride(the very same morning, good weather)a group of 3 wearing balaclavas stole my bike & wheeled it about 700 yards onto the cycle track & set it alight. I was woken by my partner asking me "where's your bike?" & shortly after was informed a neighbour had video footage(via facebook) Now a few weeks later & I have to make do with watching YT videos of motorcycles & sit morose in the garden hearing bikes all around the area.

How's the road surface? Would you consider Chris' riding risky at times or does the surface easily allow for the pace/lean angles? I rode in greece and I had more then one little slip in the dry (without crashing) some patches are just bad and they are not always recognizable right away - when it rains the surface gets like soap.

As a result of watching this brilliant series (some of it binge watched!), I’m now considering doing my next tour, alone and I’m even considering, against my previous avoidance, of fitting a couple of cameras to the bike, too! My sentiments absolutely entirely re riding in the UK… I’ve done pretty much of the whole of the UK for business purposes and it no longer has anything that draws me to it - it’s too condensed and congested for me. Europe is where I now get my riding ‘fix’. I’ve always said that 24°C is the perfect touring temperature 👍 From my corner of the world, on the edge of Epping Forest, the GSA1250 in my garage is giving me the eye!
BTW, my GSA has that clattery sound when accelerating from low revs. I’ve recently improved it by replacing the left hand cam chain tensioner. I agree, it’s not a good noise! If you see this post.. check YT on this subject. 👍

The cam noise i had in mine ended up being chain slop due to warn chain tensioner Pads. Could have just been the tensioner spring you can change underneath each side. $20 part, can get aftermarket ones that are stiffer last longer. un screw and screw new one in. Consult manual for torque specs. I was at 48k miles and over due.

@15:35. "I am in the midde of bum f*ck nowhere, in the middle of Serbia, and that's something I never thought I'd say" Absolutely right. Well done indeed. I'd hope to say that myself one day.
I did a trip to Barcelona once to watch the F1. Had no one to go with so went on my own. Stopped in Paris and Bordeux among a couple other places along the way to see the sights. When you're in France and Spain you have to at least _try_ to speak the language.. taught me that I can reply on myself doing that trip and I was only felt a bit lonely when I was watching the racing because I wish I would have had someone to talk to about it and share the experience with but then being on your own people tend to start talking to you wayyy more often than if you were already with a mate. So I met a lot of people (usually other bikers) just because I was on my own. I want to do another solo trip one day.
Thanks for making this series and the walking channel Chris. Both are excellent.

  • @LMO169

The rattling you hear from the left cylinder head is part of the exhaust camshaft called decompression system. When the camshaft is spinning slow while the starter motor is turning the engine, there is a tiny lobe extended on the backside of the EX cam to release a bit of compression to make it easier for the starter to turn over the engine. When the bike is running centrifugal forces push out the lever that rotates the small lobe on the rear side of the cam down to its flat position.
My guess is that the lever isn't heavy enough to create sufficient centrifugal force to keep it planted in the outer position and starts the rattle. Maybe a thicker oil 5W-50 reduces the noise but apart from that I'm not aware if there is a fix from BMW.
Here is a short video of a Swiss guy showing the rattle. Unfortunately he showcased it by pushing the lever inwards or up in this case, not down how it happens in operation

Edit: Please let me know, if you have any news about it

I believe that is general Garmin programming to take you through someone's backyard and the most obscure paths imaginable. Had that happen to us in Scotland, where the road became a farm road, became a gravel footpath and then we drove right past someones back door to then connect us back to the main road we could have just stayed on. But A++ for scenery and travel yarn

Think Garmin only can plot routes three ways: Fastest, Shortest and Curvy (although you can get it to avoid M'ways say). Curvy is weird. You can have a goat-made mountain pass for 30km but when it gets to the first village it goes "Ah Ha, you have been on one road for 30km and need some curves, hey let us explore the residential roads of this small hamlet" - adding 3 km and 20 minutes to your journey, for nothing. Basically I avoid Curvy like the plague and use Fastest but make the b'stard sat nav avoid motorways and go though waypoints i like. Hard work tbh

@@BaronVonGrumble On mine, i would get paranoid and remove the cylinder cover just to check the camshafts for wear. But ya certain times on long trips they just make weird noises. i have 2 r1250gs 2020 and 2021. There is a fix from bmw for the camshaft tensioner, basically they remove the tensioner and make it longer puts more pressure on the timing chain. That stops the cam chain from slopping around. I tried it, but it just felt weird for me but did lower the noise, i took it off went original.

@@BaronVonGrumble Hey Baron. "Lars" here 😅 Try having the timing chain tensioners replaced. They're easy to get to and not that expensive. I've heard of multiple cases of these not keeping proper tension on the chains and allowing them to rattle. I know for a fact that Dale from "Bridge to Gantry" at the Nürburgring had a similar rattle on his almost new R1250GS. I changed mine as a precaution after my trip.
