- The fifth installment of my 5000 mile solo road trip to the Balkans on board the mighty BMW R1250 GS Adventure.
In this episode i recall funny stories of school and meet the elderly in an ice cream shop.
Permission to Torque is a Mental Health movement set up to show others that you "get it" by displaying a discrete symbol for others to take comfort in. Its not about sitting around in a circle feeling sorry for yourself, its about shared experience and getting out there to find out what makes us happy - this is the aim of my trip and why I am sharing it on UA-cam, the good days and the inevitable bad ones too.

The town Baron made his ice cream stop in was Schladming, a pretty great ski town. Schloss Pichlarn makes regular appearances on German and Austrian TV shows, picked a winner there too. Nice to see some of Styria through your lens, looking forward to the rest of the journey!

We went through Austria on our Euro trip this year, …awesome place, I plan to return next time for a month in Austria just doing Airbnb’s and really spend some time having a good look around this beautiful country 😍

I've also been watching a lot of GS content the past couple of weeks while thinking about potential rides in 2023...I fear an expensive visit to a BMW dealer is looming.
it was this episode when you mentioned enjoying being your own company that i fully understood the mental health struggles ive been having. I'm going to do a similar trip soon, as i think it'll help. cant thank you enough, sounds simple but those words have changed me outlook on alot of things.

I remember trying to push the bike backwards while sitting on it and my foot slipped on the ground and my shin hit the back of the foot peg most likely followed by bad words and pain ehheh. When you said shit the bed it made me remember a line in a movie that made my Nephew and I laugh.

Hey Baron thx for inspiring me to do a solo trip. I’ve been wanting to go on one since the first tour de baron and I’m finally going in February. It’s nowhere as big as your journey but I’ve never traveled over 200km a day on my bike.

Any reason why you are not using the BMW Connected app for navigation?
The routing algorithm in the BMW app is much better compared to the one used by Google Maps: choice from fastest, shortest route and three levels of curvy route selection plus the usual excludes (highway, off-road, toll etc.) Maps can be downloaded and stored on the phone so GSM connectivity is not required either. Routing indications can be displayed on the TFT and it will also tell you what the speed limit is on the current location. You can also get whiz wheel integration when using the app in combination with the (a bit expensive) BMW Craddle which also supports wireless charging of the phone. I rarely use my Garmin XT anymore.

Not sure about Austria but Germany is right before left in a 30kph hence why that car almost pulled out near the hotel. Its prob the same there. Great video

Well, some things now make more sense with the added context of your boarding school stories. I'd never realised there could be a case in favour of early-onset alzheimer's until I heard about 'the bread run'.
As a racer/track rider my R1250gs screws me up when I jump on my race bike. The GS because of the telever front end/swing arm, vs riding on the standard forks makes me numb. The GS is a cadillac and doesnt make you mindful of the front end feel, like you do on a traditional bike, if that makes sense
I'm glad that don't eat white sliced bread anymore, after hearing that fond childhood memory!
At the hotels you stay at, do they have secure parking for the bike?

At 14:56 no, you had right of way, the Seat driver had a yield sign. You can tell that from behind. The yield and the stop sign are the only ones which you can tell what's what from behind.

Love these and they make me want to do a similar trip. Doable on a street triple with limited luggage or would it just be annoying and shit?
Easily doable on a street triple, I did a 2,200 mile tour on a Panigale arse roasting machine, with just a small tailpack!
Golden rule,…take half as many clothes as you think you’ll need….. and twice as much money 😂! ..just go for it mate 👍
what is the extra deflector like on the screen? Do you have a make/link? Any other ones I see are huge and look quite rank.
