    A seized sewing machine usually involves the main bearings on the upper and lower drive shafts of most sewing machines. These main "bearings" can be made of hard plastic and can easily get gummed up with lint, grease or rubber contaminants. If the timing gets off between the upper and lower shafts you will have nothing but problems. You need to check and adjust the timing when this happens.

      That’s not a bearing it’s a bushing, and a machine with plastic bushings has bigger issues from jump. Good machines seize because somebody put weird oil into them. They also seize at the hook gear/bobbin assembly.

    Very helpful video. In my case same issue was observed. I had applied engine oil few days back and now recovered after your instructions

      Why on earth would you use engine oil on a sewing machine?

    • @elizabethclaiborne6461
      @elizabethclaiborne6461 Рік тому +2

      Engine oil in a sewing machine is a recipe for disaster! The stench smells up the house and it’ll stain the fabric. We use sewing machine oil for exactly those reasons, plus these aren’t cars and have very different needs.

    I was strugling with my machine in 2 days. The case is exactelly the same as the machine you repared. I think the machine i own had not be in use in decades. It's an Adler 1595 which i bought for only 25€. I tried every video on youtube but nothing worked. Luckly i found your video and by pushing some parts as you did and voila, the machine is working now.

    There’s a very strong possibility that penetrating oil worked after sitting for a while and you happened to push on the right bit. People put weird oil into machines and it oxidizes and glues them together. Only use actual, water clear sewing machine oil.

    Same problem. I have a Sew Mate that I haven’t used for a few years and I can’t move the wheel at all. What kind of tool do I need to unscrew the screws that are “deep” in” - not on the surface of the machine? TY

    have a Elna 6003 Quilter Dream (not Pro) and it was sewing just fine. Then all of a sudden, my hand wheel seized up. The local shop says it will be a month before getting it looked at. I'm thinking not spending the unknown $$ for repair and upgrading but I LOVE this machine. Is there a way to try and fix it myself? The needle stopped/vibrated and the display says Stop for safety reasons, Then I noticed the hand wheel seized. I thought I overheated it so I shut it off. About 1/2 hr later the hand wheel rotated (with some help at first) but I didn't sew anymore that night. The next day I turned it on and it sewed about 8" and seized again. Off to the shop.... Any suggestions before I spend a lot of $$ on a new one since this one is over 20 years old? Again, I really do love this machine and would like to try and repair it myself if possible. I will get it back before they send it out out open up the case. (It's so old, they won't take a trade-in so what do I have to lose, right?). Any suggestions besides what's on the video? I haven't oiled it but have cleaned it for lint regularly.

      Use a blow dryer on it, esp on metal parts, not on plastic. This melts down the gummed up joints. Then spray WD 40 or some degreaser (Diesel?), blow dry, wipe clean, poke around joins for gummy oil. Finish off with Triflow or sewing machine oil to lubricate. Sometimes, the knobs for buttonhole, etc are jammed, causing a jam on the flywheel. I have that issue. Heat, poking with screwdriver can loosen them. Leave out in hot sun too. You solved part of the problem but not far enough with the degreasing. Do not use Carburetor Cleaner or anything that has Acetone and Toluene in it, which damages plastic. I am thinking mineral spirits, alcohol, diesel would probably be better degreasers, esp with a warmed up machine.

      @@mjremy2605 Thanks for the advice. I ended up giving my machine away but I received my Dad's 1923 Singer 101. It's the first electric sewing machine made for residential use. He used to sew miniature horse harnesses with it when I was a kid. Anyways, my brother stored it above his kitchen cabinets and it now has LOTS of grease coated on the outside (who knows about the inside). I'm sure it hasn't been run for over 40 years. Since it's old and electric, how do I get the grease cleaned without wrecking it. Put it in the sun? Blow dryer? same method as you stated above? I took apart, thoroughly cleaned and got an old treadle sewing machine working so I'm ready to tackle this one. Being soooo old, this machine should be all metal parts. I'd LOVE to be able sew something with Dad's old machine!! Any advice? TIA

    Thanks for this video. I tend to forget the power of oil sometimes and want it to be a bent shaft or something.
    The machine I'm working on became unstuck when I oiled and heated the needle shaft. It's still a bit stiff in general but I've got hope now. It doesn't get stuck after a quarter turn anymore.
    I'm giving it a rest for now.
    There's another one with the same problem...

    You did not show how to unjam the flywheel. This is basic 101 maintenance. Not a useful video. You could, and should have cleaned out the machine with a blow dryer to blow out lint, and warm up gummy old oil that solidifies around joints. You should have also used a degreaser like diesel or mineral spirits to undo the gummy joints, then an oil like Triflow or machine oil to recoat joints. Triflow also dissolves old gummy oil. This was disappointing. If you do the work of taking it apart, do a serious cleaning too.
