You did an awesome job with your budget. I am right at that same amount for my ITB miata and I am not even nearing the final goal of where I wanted to be. I could have saved a lot more if I didn't fall victim to the "while I'm in there might as well upgrade" mentality but you live and learn.
@yeknos I am not sure about prices in Canada, but I am sure its not too far off from here in California. Which is getting more expensive 😣. I'd say in the future you might be looking at around $3-4K for a running one. But sometimes good deals come around!
@yeknos Don't underestimate the reliability of these cars man, I bought a rusted out 93 with 200K on the odometer for 860 USD and after about 3000 USD of parts and several hours of work mine looks clean and runs great. (been daily driving the car for a little over a year, 5000 miles, with minimal issues) My point being don't be afraid to put some real love and care into one of these cars, I knew nothing about working on cars when I got mine but it's taught me so much about cars and how they work. Good luck little man.
Sweet build! from a business perspective, the main thing you missed on your balance sheet is the labor!! I can tell you have spent a lot of your time building this. If you were able to get an estimate for time spent working on the car and then “paid” yourself $25-75 /hr depending on how valuable you think you are, I bet this price would double to well over $20k.
You are correct! a lot of man hours went into it but I wouldn't charge my time since I didnt know what I was doing lol Also it was 'hobby' time, I enjoyed the process. I hope other people try building a car to some degree as well since it is a really enjoyable experience.
My teenage fun car was 91’ NA, but I had to sell it when some expenses came up and my wife got pregnant. I’m in a good spot financially now, and I can’t wait to buy another one and build it. I hope this doesn’t sound rude, but I’m going to essentially copy your build, with the exception of power delivery. I’m wanting to do a high revving N/A setup, individual throttle bodies. It’ll be a weekend/auto cross car. I love your build, and the passion you’ve put into it. Thanks for the inspiration, I can’t wait to see you guys blow up on here🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
How much would you spend on all the tools/equipment, assuming you had it buy it all? Amazing video thank you, sweet ride, kind of hope to do something like this
I did not take tools into account. But really I dont have super special tools. Standard mechanics socket set and then some small hand tools here and there I picked up along the way. A basic socket set like this will get you most of the way: amzn.to/3v9Grb3 Then pick up specialty tools as you need them (eg. extendable ratchets, extensions, special pliers etc). Also having things like an impact gun or my favorite an electric ratchet like this can make life much easier: amzn.to/3v7inpr I hope you do get a chance to learn and build a car! Keep me updated!
amazing cost breakdown....or analysis....but your labour time and expert work and all the miscellaneous would cost about $ 10,000 + inc parts in australia you should have a contest to work out the exact price of total material cost....? great job guys....love ur work
though I would not charge for MY labor specifically, correct paying someone else for labor definitely adds to the cost. But part of my goal with this channel is to encourage others to try their own builds if possible! Thanks for watching and welcome!
i paied 350€ for ma miata which has a dent in its fender and had to have major rust repair on the wheel arches, but at the end i got a fully road wrothy miata for about 2.300€ which is a steal seeing for how much an imported original miata goes for here in Germany. The guy was a friend of a friend who just wanted to get rid of the car cause he was a rich kid and his parents promised him a new BMW so he just sold it for cheap also it was filthy af inside but nothing some unscrewing and scrubbing can fix, now its pretty mind inside and outside well some peeling paint and the bent fender and maybe an old soft top but other than that drives great and is lots of fun even stock and with an open diff

Hi, just getting into looking into project cars. Can you build a project car miata with the main purpose for distance driving and just lasting a long time overall? How long do project cars tend to last for?
The Miata is a surprisingly robust car! Mine had over 200k miles on it and was still running great and held up to a few track days and even being supercharged!
I am not too well versed in buying damaged cars. but visually it looked like no chance the frame could have been tweaked. So I felt safe to go for it. I am sure there are techniques out there to find out like taking measurements and stuff but I am not sure of how people who do this often check.
Check out www.mossmiata.com they helped out with some parts for the build. Great place for aftermarket parts as well as hard to find OEM/OEM Replacement parts like interior bits and other obsecure things you cant find at an autozone.
Thank you so much. I just bought an absolutely trashed miata for $500. They said it has engine knock due to the main bearings being bad. Its missing both front fenders, and was previously sandwiched in between two cars and pulled back apart. I have a lot of work on my hands, but the hardest part for me has been locating good places to shop for import parts.
@@mikegibson7128 wooo sounds like youll have your hands full but its going to be that much sweeter once you get it all back to glory! Look into local facebook groups, they were pretty valuable for me during my build for information as well as used parts.
What would you recommend someone who wants to start buiding cars similarly like that as a hobby? How do I get started? I am not afraid to mess up a car, I just wanna work on it and have fun, but I just don´t know anything about Miata. How do I start? Thank you :)
I watched a lot of youtube videos and just took a risk and tried things myself. go slowly and take your time. it can be a little scary but when you finish the project, its the most amazing feeling! Good luck!
that is a really good idea. lol Not because the miata is unreliable or anything but not having to rush your project car because its your ONLY car, makes things much much less stressful.
The car makes 160whp (according to dyno app). The car SHOULD have been making about 180 but my motor is over 200K miles and compression is not great. Still a big upgrade from the 100whp it was stock. I made a tuning/dyno video here you can check out: ua-cam.com/video/zKIhAIGN4js/v-deo.html
I made a video of me street tuning the car. I do a before and after tuning pull. Note that I used a dyno app but it should give decent idea of the power it makes. ua-cam.com/video/zKIhAIGN4js/v-deo.html
But the work time (would you give me a car to work with, i would destroy it cause i dont know what to do) for a Garage is like 20k or so. So it will get not so cheap :/ maybe you could tell us what the prize would be if you want to sell it
11k? That just puts you right back up in the area of how much miatas are going for on the market. So all in all you didn't really save any money at all. It would be the same as if you bought a 5k miata in better condition and just put in 6k of upgrades. Or maybe it would've costed you less since it would be in better condition? Like say 3 or 4k in upgrades instead? You would essentially be in the same if not better place you are now. Lol But who cares in what order you did things, it all still results in the same thing. A good looking miata.
well said! Miata prices are pretty crazy now but the condition of the Miata I got was pretty rough. Could be a wash for sure. But yup love this little thing. Cheap to mod, easy to work on. Looks great. Thanks for the support!
