My budget dream car is getting supercharged! In this video we install an Edelbrock Supercharger kit (stage 1) on my 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata. This kit will bring power to around 200 horsepower at the wheels, with a max boost pressure of 8.25 PSI. Edelbrock claims it increases horsepower by 41% over stock and increases torque by 36% over stock.

Fun fact! If you add up the total cost for a '16 Miata Club (~19K or less), car wrap (~3K), and supercharger (~5K), you're at $27K, well under the price of a new Miata Club (~$31K club, ~$35K with BBS & Brembo package like this car has). Will it be as reliable as a new Miata? Absolutely not! Will it be more fun?! I think so!
Big thanks to AutoTempest for sponsoring this episode! bit.ly/2Bq1wbw
12:00 C'mon Jason, you know Miata owners have faith that Big Black Things will fit into Tight Spaces. 😜

Yeah, but the resale doesn't keep up with the mods unfortunately. I like this comparison though. Not every project car has to be a sunken costs falacy on wheels!

That service advisor skit gave me PTSD. I've been robbed by one before 😂
freezeme360 Lol, if those are like spark plugs you just heat them with a torch to remove (I assume you broke the part that the wrench goes on and will need to use an extractor kit). That’s not too difficult, even if you had to drill it out it’s not a terribly expensive job.
@freezeme360 I have a convertible and the Rams and pushrods broke. I had a service guy tell me it would be nearly 4k for them to fix it and another 500 for a rear end control module. Everything I needed was on eBay for 150.
Oh and they charge 300 for an oil change
@@_red_scorpion_ As a defence to the service industry. Speaking about just the price isn't fully fair. I have to do the rear main seal on my Odyssey. It's like $35 in parts, but pays like 13 hours.
Ice also done jobs that pay\take very little time and the part is over $1000.

Next Video: Buying and supercharging a yellow Tesla roadster
Hah, that's a good one. It's too early for the auto parts stores to carry an electric supercharger, silly. : )
Plot Twist, adds a Tesla Supercharger at home.
If the Porches can turbo, Tesla can supercharge. Thats the way it is
@@Sondalive Hurrah, for standing-up for Tesla. Howbeit, you're speaking of apples and oranges. Charging is not booting. Boosting a Tesla would require amping up the voltage to drive the electric motors harder. Equal rights for ICE and EV!
Or it would imply ripping the e-junk out and remaking the toy that it is into a proper, Brunellian oil guzzler that uses a proper geartrain to tear the asphalt from underneath it’s bosom...
Jason you may find this reassuring, when I was in auto body repair we had 4 high milage (350,000-450,000km) Mazda CX-5s come in, engines sounded great, just in for body repairs from accidents. I asked all the owners when they came to pick them up how much maintaince have the put in? Routine maintaince, breaks early was common amongsts them, and one person had an automatic transmission fail but thanks to the unlimited milage warrenty they were covered, and got it replaced for free. They were towing when it happened (perhaps over capacity) Carbon build up wasn't mentioned as an issue. Perhaps it's because they were all mainly highway vehicles, less change in speed, less PCV use?
I was surprised to see build up as it was an issue that Mazda adressed in the press release of the SKYACTIV G engines. They mentioned proper heat would eliminate build up, perhaps having more fun with this supercharged power will help?
People underestimate the difference between normal miles and highway miles
@@toad3222 While a lot of them were mostly highway that's not to say none of it was city, regardless that's a lot of run time and they were all holding up very well. I don't think anyone would argure Port Injection will generally hold up longer than Direct Injection motors given the same driving situations and regular maintaince.
Though perhaps the SKYACTIV 2.0L will hold up better than the Honda 2.2 with an 8000 redline and a tendancy to burn oil.
So you’re saying fitting a supercharger is preventative maintenance. Got it.
Direct injection causes a boatload of carbon on your intake valve

Congrats, and great color choice! My wife and I installed this exact same kit on our 2017 RF. When you get to driving it and are immediately VERY disappointed with the driveability of the Edelbrock tune (hesitation, surging, really uneven power delivery, etc), you may want to look into a 3rd party tune. We did a custom ecutek tune from a vendor we found on the miata forums; it was worth every penny and completely transformed the car. We were about to rip out the SC and take the car back to stock before we found a proper tuner. I'm eagerly waiting to see your dyno numbers; ours made 221 HP, 191 TQ with the SC kit and a RoadsterSport header. Also, for anyone wondering about the length and difficulty of the install, I'm guessing the reason it took them 3 days is because of the filming part; we are experienced DIY wrenches, but not pros by any means, and we did it in two relaxed 8-9 hour days, with one minor snag. The fuel line in our kit was from one of their LSx kits. They overnighted the correct part, though, so good customer service from Edelbrock. I hope you end up as happy with the final result as we are with ours!
Good job guys ! That was fun to look at, thanks for posting this project.
