The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King Movie Description:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson from a screenplay by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Jackson. It is based on 1955's The Return of the King, the third volume of the novel The Lord of the Rings by J. R. R. Tolkien. The sequel to 2002's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, the film is the final instalment in The Lord of the Rings trilogy. It features an ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm, and Sean Bean. Continuing the plot of the previous film, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are making their final way toward Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum's true intentions, while Merry, Pippin, Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the others join forces together against Sauron and his legions in Minas Tirith.
The Return of the King was financed and distributed by American studio New Line Cinema, but filmed and edited entirely in Jackson's native New Zealand, concurrently with the other two parts of the trilogy. It premiered on 1 December 2003 at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington, and was then released on 17 December 2003 in the US and on 18 December 2003 in New Zealand. The film was acclaimed by both critics and audiences, who considered it to be a landmark in filmmaking and the fantasy film genre, and a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy, with praise for the visual effects, performances, action sequences, direction, screenplay, musical score, costume design, emotional depth, scope and story. It grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2003 and the second highest-grossing film of all time at the time of release, as well as the highest-grossing film ever released by New Line Cinema.
Like the previous films in the trilogy, The Return of the King is widely recognised as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. The film received numerous accolades; at the 76th Academy Awards, it won all eleven awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, the first fantasy film to do so and tying with 1959's Ben-Hur and 1997's Titanic as the movie with the most Academy Award wins. It also became the second film series whose entries have all won Best Visual Effects, after the original Star Wars trilogy.

Well, JRR Tolkien served in WWI. He was part of the lost generation (where a lot of British men lost their lives). It would influence his writing quite a lot. I think you are mixing up the Grey Havens for Valinor. Sam and the gang *are* in the Grey Havens when they see off Frodo and Gandalf, who are going to sail to Valinor to hang with the remaining elves and the gods. Frodo gets to go since he saved middle earth, and Gandalf is going home to hang with his fellow Maiar (lesser gods).

It also had to do with the power of the Rings. The wielders of the Three were Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel, who were all there to board the ship at the same time. For the world to move forward - even marred as it is - the power of the Rings and all touched by them have to leave Middle Earth forever. That was why Bilbo and Frodo - who were the bearers of the One - boarded the ship to leave. Sixty years later, Sam also goes to the Grey Havens to sail across the sea, since he was also a bearer of the One, if only for a brief period.

The gardens are all real and they grow things all year round, then donate most of the food to the needy. Also, they make their own beers there and you can eat and drink in The Green Dangon Inn. I spent my 21st there, stole the cup that comes with the complimentary beer, bought a bottle of all 3 flavors, then went home and watched all 3 LOTR movies while getting drunk. It was amazing. So I enjoyed watching this great movie with you. And I want to share:
    1) I always cry when the horns of Rohan blow. I feel such love for them when they cry 'Death' as they charge into battle.
    2) The army of the dead had been bound to defend Minas Tirith. That was done. And in Tolkien's world view, doing what is right is more important than keeping a battle advantage, especially when these unnatural beings should be released to rest in peace.
    3) Elijah Wood was a little young to be Frodo, but I thought he did a great job. And there's nothing not to love about Sam, but it was Frodo who was risking not just his life, but his soul. To Tolkien, the whole point of the Mount Doom scene is that Frodo was saved because he spared Gollum's life and showed him compassion. No one could have deliberately destroyed the Ring where it was strongest, so Frodo failed, as Isildur failed, as anyone would have failed.
    4) The scene of the Dead Marshes with the corpses lying in the water is an image from the trench warfare of WWI, of which Tolkien was a veteran. And just like that war, men came back wounded in spirit in ways that never seemed to heal. Frodo is the same.
    5) Galadriel is at the Grey Havens because she repented of her defiance of the Valar in coming to Middle Earth, and is at last like the other Elves taking the journey back to the Elvenhome. This is what she meant in 'Fellowship' by "I pass the test. I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel'. Instead of becoming Dark Lady.
    6) There were not enough endings! And everyone should watch the credits at least through the song. I sat crying in the theatre because at last the story was over and I didn't want it to be.
    7) Heh no one ever reacts to the commentary track versions. They're all good but the actors are the most entertaining.
    8) Maybe Jackson will go in and clean up the effects some. I'd rewatch it!
    9) Nice wig.

10:52 About Pippin running all the way down and back up with Gandalf.. Well, there's this part in the book about Beregond who was a Guard of the Citadel serving in the Third Company. He also greatly admired and was friends with Faramir. After Pippin pledged his service to Denethor, Beregond (and his son) helped guide him about the city. So anyway later during the Siege of Gondor, Pippin passes news to Beregond about Denethor's madness, convinces him (for the sake of Faramir's life) to leave his post (a banishable offense) and actually fought off other guards to buy as much time as possible before Gandalf and Pip could get there.
Beregond also fought at the Black Gate of Mordor. In the book, Aragorn totally trolls him by acting like he's going to banish him for abandoning post and murdering guards standing in the way of rescue but then was nudged to live in Ithilien to serve Faramir and was promoted to Captain of the White Company.
Just an example of another side character in the book that never made it to the movies. I know many often think first of Bombadil, but my fav book-only character has to be Quickbeam, the nearest thing to a hasty Ent.

My favourite Andy/Gollum fact is that the first scene he shot is the "clever hobits to climb so high!" scene, and at that time they were in their infancy of how Gollum was to work (the original had him completely voiced, and they intended to animate him in without the need for Andy for most of the scenes). However 👀 Andy had put a great deal of thought into how Gollum was to move, crouch, the facial expressions, the various almost insect-climbing movents, etc. and after they wrapped this first scene with Gollum they ✨scrapped✨ the idea of not having Andy as Gollum in every scene, paused the Gollum shooting schedule, and they worked to created the Gollum we know now. I can't imagine a version that doesn't have him doing the physicality and interactions.

I can't remember if its on the DVD or whether I saw it some other place but the whole thing with Frodo and PTSD is a good take on what is happening but its also the corruption of the ring being almost like heroin or drugs. When Frodo is all a bit lost during the ending, its cause he needs that fix but knows he can't ever get it again. Its why he doesn't smile until he is about to get on the boat to the undying lands. It's also why Bilbo wants to hold the ring "one last time". All the people who were ring barers of the one ring (and the other rings too) got to go on the boat and leave. For Frodo, it was the feeling of the weight of addiction being lifted (as well as seeing his friends) that finally gets the smile out of him in the end. Good shit man

Shelob is a decendent if Ungoliant, a primordial entity from the Darkness taking the form of a giant spider, full origins literally unknown. Ungoliant is the oldest and greatest spider of Arda (their Earth), and was so powerful that she turned on Melkor/Morgoth and he was forced to call on the Balrogs to fight her off. She bred the Great Spiders, of whom Shelob is the last upon Middle Earth. She never has an alternate form, and she is physically based/designed and movement-captured (somewhat) in the film on the New Zealand Funnel Web Spider.

Just wanted to help out with some lore things. 1) Frodo and co. sail from the Grey Havens to Valinor, also know as the Undying Lands. Frodo and Bilbo disembark on the isle of Tol Eressëa, which is an island of Elves that lies off the coast of Aman (Valinor). They go there so they may be healed in both body and mind, and thus die in peace; the two hobbits were injured in their souls by the long corruption of the Ring. Also, the hobbits could not go to Valinor, which was long ago banned from the race of Men (to which hobbits are a part), as they wouldn't live satisfying lives so close to such purity and life, much as how some plants will wilt under a hot and luminous sun. The Elves go to Valinor because of the corrupt nature of the World, which was fundamentally infused into creation by Sauron's master, and this corruption/decay ruins their immortal nature. Valinor is the only safe place long term for those with immortality, as the Powers of the World (the Valar of Valinor) sustain and protect that place. Later, Gimli, Legolas, and Sam all take the same journey as Frodo and co., finding the peace and satisfaction they earned through their desperate and noble struggle as the Fellowship.

I've only ever seen a handful of people be critical of Eowyn's line as she defeats the Witch King, but to any that do; it's literally a plot point in the books. It's why Tolkien sets the Witch King's infamy up via the phrase "no man can kill". If I had to speculate, it's likely a homage to Macbeth's supposed invulnerability as "none of woman born shall harm Macbeth". Tolkien was a huge fan of dramatic irony, and literay foils.

If I remember right from the Shadow of Mordor games, they explain that Sauron, disguised as an elf, cursed a vain woman who held her beauty above others or something like that and turned her into a spider. Cursing her to be forever ugly and monstrous

As a little kid I was always EXTREMELY upset watching the charge of the Rohirrim cause I thought the horses really died. As an adult I get emotional watching it cause of the nostalgia and the music and the bravery in the face of certain doom.

I'd be either a named elve, cause no named elve has ever died, or I'd be from the dunadign. Whatever Aragorn is from. What happened to Frodo's neck is why I don't wear anything around my neck. It starts itching, becomes uncomfortable, and eventually, depending on what it is, I get a major friction burn or rash. Not pleasant. And gandalf has been to the white shores, it's where everything in the Lord of the rings universe comes from. It's just some people do something that makes them worthy of seeing it again. Like Frodo and Bilbo.

I am sorry to hear that these movies are among your lowest watched compared to others. I have been a huge LoTR fan prior to these movies coming out. I can remember being worried they would ruin them and happily surprised at how good they are. I know they aren't 100% to the books, but that is fine with me as I can enjoy each of them for their own merit and form. Like you mentioned doing, I also binge watched these on repeat, the theatrical editions, then the extended editions, one by one as I waited for the next one to be released! My husband (boyfriend at the time) tried to surprise me by taking me to one on the night it was released at our local theater. We didn't get to see it that night, as all shows were completely sold out until a midnight showing, and we couldn't stay out that late because of plans the next day. I used to startle co-workers because they would walk into our landscape office during slow times, and I was blaring the soundtracks while cleaning in there alone! (If I couldn't watch it at least I could see it in my mind while listening to the soundtrack!)

Shelob has no human form , she is essentially the daughter of an ancient dark spider god called Ungoliant.
Also in the book , Frodo didn't push off Gollum into Mt Doom, Gollum fell on accident in his joy after getting the Ring.
As the Ring just cannot be destroyed on Purpose , it took luck / fate to destroy it and defeat Sauron (this is also why Sauron never bothered with any defense at Mt Doom , since nobody should be able to destroy it even if they got there)

The only Lord of the Rings game I know of is the one on PS2, which I have. Is that the Return of the King game? I should get that one out. I haven’t played it since it was released.
It’s hard to say who stole the show in this one. They all had such great moments and integral roles to play in this war.
These movies are masterpieces, and everyone in them are bonded together forever. What a gift to have been part of such an amazing, unforgettable experience. I love watching the bonus features on the dvds and interviews with the cast, talking about their times together.
“Into the West” by Annie Lennox during the end credits is heartbreaking. I love her.
I was so obsessed with everything connected to these movies that I called the network, ABC, in 2004 and asked if I could somehow get a copy of The Oscars, but I was turned down. I knew I would be, but I had to try. I had a feeling I should record The Oscars each year these movies came out, but I didn’t, and I should have.

The sheer anxiety as the meter of enemies got higher and higher until it was in the danger zone...I would literally be shaking and sweating playing that. That game was so great. I'm surprised there has never been a remake or remaster.
