How to ADHD Hi! i just was wondering if you've heard of the reusable smart notebook "rocketbook" and what your opinion on it would be for a #bujo? ://getrocketbook.com/pages/how-rocketbook-works
When I had a bujo I did this thing called a boredom breaker where when I had a really interesting question but was busy I would put it in my bujo and when I was bored I would go to my bujo boredom breaker and google the questions I have and maybe get sidetracked and learn some crazy cool facts
1 collection now added to my fairly new bujo...."Boredom Breakers-/Google That!" What a perfect idea. I am constantly finding myself thinking "I need to look that up...I'll forget if I wait til later so STOP Everything and Google it now!" Then I feel guilty because I have spent too much time researching something that was #IBNU. So now I can add it to my collection! Thanks for sharing!
I love hearing that the bullet journal was made by an ADHD brain, because when I heard about bujo I thought it was for people who could organize and automatically figured that it wouldn't work for ADHD brains. So glad to hear from the founder that it works for brains!
I agree! This is why I ignored bujo as much as I could because I felt like I wouldn’t be able to have the attention for it cause people make such intricate ones and it’s just so overwhelming seeing those
@@UwU-lm9or I apologize for replying to your 2-year old comment, but it appears that you may have made the common and very understandable mistake of thinking ADD and ADHD are different and for the benefit of others (and maybe even also yourself), it is helpful. They used to be different diagnoses (my little brother was diagnosed ADD, my older brother ADHD as kids and my mom ADD in the 1990s). However, now, they are both under the same "ADHD" umbrella. Jessica touches on this frequently on the channel including these two amazing videos: "What is ADHD": ua-cam.com/video/xMWtGozn5jU/v-deo.html "Why My Channel is Called How to ADHD (not ADD) ": ua-cam.com/video/oBx7RjPAFrg/v-deo.html Basically, current diagnoses of ADHD are one of 3 different "presentations" 1. Predominately hyperactive/ impulsive 2. Predominately inattentive (What used to be "ADD") 3. Combined Aside: for the record, I, though much later than my family members, also received an ADHD diagnosis (predominately inattentive). We got hit hard really, really hard by the ADHD gene (that really, *really* strong family link was a big part of the reasoning behind my doctor diagnosing me).
How to ADHD thank you! ❤️ I’ve been here for over 14 months as that’s how long I had to wait for the appointment! Thank you for making the wait easy with all your advice and recommendations! I’ve nearly made the whole way through Eric Tivers & Drummer and the great mountain podcasts thanks to you & weirdly can hyperfocus listening to them! Mess in my house really gets me down but yesterday I was able to spend the entire day getting it immaculate ready for my parents coming for Christmas, I can’t tell you what a relief it is. ❤️
@@ehowiehowie7850 I start meds soon. Explain how trial and error went with the medications-- did the side effects disappear? What were your pros and cons with what ended up working med wise?
When I'm at work I keep a tiny little notebook in my pocket at all times -- I jot down whatever random thoughts and ideas that cross my mind. Then at the end of the day (or on a break) I transfer my notes to my bujo.
I find I stuff a bunch of sticky notes in my pocket, and then if I don't have the brain energy to transfer the writing, I can just stick 'em in my bujo so they don't end up lost foreverrrrrrr (probably forgotten in a pocket and doomed to leave paper lint all over a future load of laundry, usually).
Field notes... Great idea Christian! You can even find versions that have dots like a BuJo. They are 3½" × 5½" 48 Pages with rounded corners so are easy to slip into a pocket.
I'm a new viewer, as of just a few weeks ago. A friend shared your TED talk with me and told me that you had a connecting UA-cam channel. From the very first video, I was blown away. I then proceeded to hyperfocus and watch every video on your channel, haha. But, seriously, you're so inspirational. I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 17 (so 11 years ago) and didn't really have a good support system. My mom loves me and supported my interest, but had no idea about what ADHD is and had no desire to learn. For years, the diagnosis was something I was ashamed of. I did go to college and struggled for four straight years with finding a studying, partying, relationships balance (with studying often taking a backseat to other fun and risky activities). When I was 24, I decided to actually start learning about what ADHD was, what it meant for me to have it. I got a life coach who worked through social skills (learning social skills at age 24 was a bit tricky) with me. I researched and researched, I read science articles, I read blogs of fellow ADHDers, and I watched videos. Now, at age 28, I finally feel like I am accepting who I am and how I work. I have my own crazy way of doing things and there are actually people in my life who accept me for who I am. Finding your channel has been amazing. To be honest, it's the first time that I've found somebody talking about ADHD who matches who I am, an adult woman. It's not a doctor talking about symptoms in children, it's not the whole string of hyperactive teen boys or men (though, those are helpful in their own ways), but a woman! A woman who understands how ADHD affects self-esteem, emotions, and struggles from a woman's perspective. Keep doing what you're doing! I really appreciate you! Sorry the comment was so long! :)
Kayla your comment absolutely made my day, thank you for taking the time to write it! I spent all day rewriting the next video and am barely (at 10pm) ready to shoot it, and you just gave me the motivation to do it. Thank you so much!!
How to ADHD I am also a woman (age 33) right in your age range although I was just diagnosed a few months ago after a few years of suspecting. Your channel has been so wonderful. Congratulations to you and Edward on your marriage and success. Please tell Edward that his work is very appreciated and noticed too.
Good for you for finding out so young! I was diagnosed when I was 45 and all of a sudden everything in my life made sense. I just found the bullet journal idea by googling "how to ADHD' videos and it brought me here. I'm turning 55 this month and I'm still trying to figure myself out. ha! JESSICA....THANK YOU! For being upbeat, insightful, fun and keeping those videos short...because I check out after 3 minutes.
I'm pretty much in the same boat! I was diagnosed in Jr high, and tried a prescription or two, but after my junior year of high school, it seemed that everyone (parents, teachers, and even me) forgot that I have ADHD. Because of this, I actually thought it went away. I didn't know to be educated. Now, at age 28, when someone like a doctor asks about me medical history, I usually say I WAS diagnosed as a teenager while thinking that there isn't anything I need to do for it now, but still struggling all the same.. some of my friends could still see the symptoms and struggles up to now, but didn't say anything, probably because they thought I was already doing what I needed to do for it... Because I'm an adult...I had no idea I should (and could) still be doing stuff to help with my ADHD... until I found these videos. I think part of it was shame for having it and trying to keep the thought of it tucked in the closet in the darkest reaches of my mind, but mostly, I was NEVER educated on what the symptoms were or how to cope... Well, maybe my therapist who diagnosed me tried to tell me, but I forgot?? But I feel like I would remember if someone sat down with me and spelled it out like Jessica does in these videos. This channel has been life changing for me! I've been watching these videos every possible moment, but it's difficult with two kids. And now I know a way to organize my thoughts and make sure all the important stuff doesn't slip through the cracks!!! My biggest struggle with ADHD is trying to remember and prioritizing things. My brain is just like a white board that can only fit so much before you have to erase it when I'm halfway through a thought. My Bujo can be my brain. 😁 but that doesn't solve the problem of forgetting what I'm saying in the middle of saying it...🤔 Anyways, thank you for your post! I needed it! 🤗
My respect for Ryder has absolutely skyrocketed. Thanks for having him on your show and even more so thanks to Ryder for being so humble... What a cool person.
I love love love seeing how other people use their Bullet Journals. Especially fellow Brains! Mine is 95% memories, thoughts, and lists and about 5% planning.
When I was using my BuJo more for planning and things for that nature, I preferred the original system. However, I don't really have the need to plan things out daily or even weekly. I do however need a place to keep track of books to read, movies to watch, places to visit, videos to film etc. As well as a place to store memories & thoughts. I also use to to help keep track of my language learning.
Mine's the same! It's more like an organized journal, reverse itinerary (I like to record my trips to a T), lists, habit tracker, memories. I have a separate notebook at work that i use specifically for processing and work tasks (so it looks more like the traditional bujo with bullets and a key)
I swear to god if it wasnt for my bujo i wouldve forgetten 90% of my appointments rather than just 40%, because having them in a digital calendar is not enough. As messy my handwriting is (any other left handed brains?) I *really* need to physically write things down to remember them. Plus I never had a diary as a kid, so self-observations are nice to have too. Thank you Ryder for sharing a system thats free to start and cheap to use depending on how overboard you wanna go :P
2 years later but my tip is to go out and buy a good ballpoint. not a fountain pen. I had never realised how distracting it is to have 1000 (half)empty similar pens lying around that I couldn't write well with anyway. It truly has helped me immensely and didn't break the bank - mine was 32 euros.
Started my bujo ages ago, unfortunately I fell out of the habit. Your post was a great reminder to revisit and relearn it. Sadly it has been sitting on my under utilised launch pad... Which reminds me I need to start using that more too.... Oh and mediation.... And lists.... And... Ah crap.... Right... Think today could end up being a duvet day....
Hey everyone, Michaels craft stores have AMAZEBALLS journals almost exactly like a Leuchterm book, in graph, dot grid, or lined paper for only FIVE BUCKS!
Oh my...I’m 65 and have been making lists with check boxes for over 40 years; could not understand why I couldn’t hold onto anything if it wasn’t down on paper. Never heard of a bullet journal until now! Or, that OTHER people needed them to get through! Your videos are so validating: I AM CRAZY, but there’s a REASON! hahaha oh joy
I have been using what they seem to be calling a bullet journal for decades. Both for planning and catching my ideas. Monthly on white board in my office, weekly and daily in some many books. The years worth of hard cover note books were dated and in order on my selves. Now that I am retired ,I thought I did not need them but this reminds me how well they worked. Obviously I has had ADHD my whole life but developed so many coping tools fo myself to be successful but I guess it was a lot of work.
I agree and also kinda wonder if him having a good grip on what helps him find order in his own life (via bullet journaling) somehow subconsciously adds to the whole being attractive thing, like beyond physical look, but also the vibe that comes through from having an understanding of your own self.
Stop it, I’m a couple of years late but I was intently searching for this comment, he is SO FINE, my god. I rarely have this sort of reaction to people but MAN… he’s so fine.
@@jubeesays716 I think you’re definitely on the mark with that observation, for me it’s his mannerisms, expressions and way of speaking. I find them very attractive. The whole vibe.
I’m on my third BUJO -I keep one for each year - and I have one at one of my jobs that is specific to that work only. It has been the very best thing for me. The first one was more colorful- but I had to go back to mostly just my single black micron pen so that I couldn’t get hung up on searching for my midliners, or having to have a specific color for something - it was a great freedom to go back to basics and keep it minimal. I’m a big doodler and just doodling with my black pen is enough for me and my needs - doodling helps me process -and the bonus : my pages become little unique visual delights on the days when I do ! I often add some color at the very beginning of year; planning and writing goals - color is a great tool for me. And then sometimes I’ll add color when reflecting at end of a month or year. Highlighting items that were positive. Going minimal is so freeing - and forgiving. That’s my favorite part of BUJO ing - it’s so forgiving. If I skip a week - so what ??? I just start back up. No judgements. If I skip a month ?! It happened this year. And it was really 2 months. And it was because I was overwhelmed with the amount of work I had. When I picked it back up and started journaling again and looked back to the entries I had before i stopped - it contained extremely valuable information that I can now use to avoid the same problem next year. I am adding things(tasks) to the future planning in the months ahead that will prevent a lot of the bottleneck I experienced in March and April. So once again it’s a tool that organically grows and changes with me. The flexibility is key. Thank you, Ryder for sharing your system ( I first found you on Tedtalk) and I am so thankful for this UA-cam channel for so many other insights !!
Putting this in here in the hopes you'll see it, but it would be so super cool if you could make a video about either how to tell the difference between ADHD and other mental disorders (or how they affect each other) or discussing the difficulties and strategies against not trusting your thoughts and emotions (because you overreact all the time). Thank you! You're awesome!
it's been a while, but if you or anyone are still looking for this: Patrick Teahan on youtube has a bunch of videos specifically looking at overlaps of symptoms (he has a CPTSD focus, which can have a lot of similar symptoms due to dysregulation)
Hey Brains, I have no formal diagnosis but find myself easily relating to most of what you talk about. Regardless of my actual brain state I find your guidance comforting and at 38 years old the Bujo seems like something that could help me focus on turning my life around. I'll keep looking for the app and would appreciate an update or notification when it is released, just in case I forget about it 😁. Bye for now Brains
And diagnosis or no, if you have ADHD or similar struggles, if you're here for you you're a brain! If you're here to support someone you love you're a heart :D
Hey David, I can relate to what you posted and I am 48. I find a lot of what is in the videos is SUPER helpful and have been watching them all at various times. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks sooo much for the update! (I was one of the ppl who'd asked how it was going.) Of all the tips on your videos, the BuJo system has been one of the bestest. As to not losing it: I've tucked a Tile "slim" tracker gadget in my BuJo's back cover pocket, and have lost and found it twice already -- it works great!! Highly recommended. Thanks again for all that you do, L.
I always wanted one but my DH didn't see the need. Now I do!!! I keep losing my BuJo. And my keys, and my purse, and my Kindle... Thanks for the tip, Nicole
Hi im Carlton from South Africa, before i was diagnosed I always thought of myself as a child, that I could'nt grow up, that im just being unnessacary or not trying hard enough so i stopped everything that made me Me, so thank you Jessica and everyone on this page, you guys have given me the courage to be Me and not think that something is wrong with me, before this channel ive always felt alone and that no one understands me, Im so proud to be part of this awesum community and I appreciate and love you all...
Just finished setting up my first ever bujo and I'm soooooooooo excited!! So far I haven't figured out what to put in the future log but I did do 5 monthly logs back to back because I got the syllabus for each of my classes today with all the homework and reading assignments mapped out for the semester. I decided to make myself weekly logs too in the same style as the monthly logs because a week is about all my brain can handle at once and I need to start assessing my homework weekly rather than daily. Now I finally have a place in my agenda designated for professor contact information rather than repurposing another section! random doodle pages here I come!
Your timing is always perfect, Jessica. I found out about bullet journal in your first video about that, and now, I was almost giving up about all this journalling stuff; suddenly, you came up with this AWESOME video, thank you so much for that!
Thanks so much. I also started using a bullet journal after seeing a video from Ryder Carroll - before that had dismissed it as was so intimidated by the extremely detailed and artistic ones I saw elsewhere. A simple one is actually quite ADHD friendly! Appreciate you and your videos.
My dad was a farmer and even to this day wears "farmer overalls" which had a pocket where he keeps a tiny notebook and pen. He doesnt know he manages ADHD -or something similar- it is neat to see how he created a way to make life work for him. He is in his 80's now. There is always hope!
This is awesome! Ryder is amazing and has a calming voice, I'm listening to the audiobook now. Could you publish more of the talk you had with him? That would be amazing! Thank you for the important content you're providing, Jessica 😍
One of the biggest helps from your channel is knowing I don't have to beat myself up anymore. Has anyone else in a relationship had trouble remembering your response in an argument? I try to let hubby say what he needs to say, then I find 10 min passed and my wonderful goldfish tendencies kick in and I'm done fighting over it. I want to be connected and happy again, but my reason for being angry was legit. It always sounds better in my head than when I try to explain. LOL! Pro tip: been married to the same amazing (Not perfect) man for 19 years in September. Never go to bed angry. You end up staying angry days longer than if you walk away 10 min, calm down and try again to work it out. Learn to catch yourself being triggered in a conversation. (not easy to do) Many times recently I've found, if I walk away before the argument happens, I can sort through my own thoughts and decide what the core issue really is. I tried something called mirroring technique the other day. Helped me feel like he understood me. If your in a toxic relationship, get out fast as you can. If you really care about that person and they return the feelings mutually, it's well worth it to invest in each other. Your thoughts, needs and values should never be brushed under the rug or bottled up. It ends badly. LOL! Wondering if that tracker system would work for the number of arguments vs number of good times? Sometimes it's hard to tell if a relationship is toxic. Been there too.
I had the same issue, not being able to take out the book, find this month's page, get my pen and then write it all out every time I had a small to-do or scheduling note. So what I do is keep post-its with my bujo pen (and at my desk) and I put one on the front of my journal, use that to jot stuff quickly during the day. Then during my lunch/home time I'll throw everything into the bujo. It also helps because I hate having a daily to-do or grocery list inside the journal, because I'll immediately forget, so seeing it on the front of the journal is great.
I use mine a lot for daily to-do lists. I work in an office as a nutritionist and then 2 days per week on our social media. So I have constant to-do lists. I also write down important things about my family members, friends, convos so I know what to refer back to and what is going on. I can forget details about people I love and its helpful for me to have a conversation log.
I'm now going to Amazon and add to wish list cute journals and gel pens. I can already feel myself overwhelmed by the task of creating one so I may have to watch your video a million more times.
Been using a bujo for the past 2 years and it really helps me stay organized. If I don't write down my daily/weekly tasks it really negatively affects my anxiety levels. I'm a generally a very organized person out of necessity to mitigate symptoms of GAD, so I don't have some typical adhd symptoms. I really resonate with not being able to complete tasks, drifting off while being spoken to, being generally distracted and trying to do multiple things at once. I've suspected I have adhd for a little over a year now and after finding your videos recently, I'm pretty certain that I do. I began to suspect it after being in daily classroom setting and noticing other people retained information much easier than I did. Anyway, thanks for your videos. I may seek formal diagnosis one day soon. 😊
I was diagnosed just 3 weeks ago, at age 31. Before the diagnostic I was already watching all your videos like a maniac! 🙈😂😂 I tried the bujo but I have a huge problem with keeping up with anything, including the journal... I never learned how to make myself do stuff since I lived with my mom until I was 30, and she always make sure to force me to do things 🙈🙈. Now I’m married and in a total different country having no idea how to do the dishes every day. I haven’t watch all the videos (I’ll get there hehe) but any tip or help on how get out of the couch and actually do things I’ll be forever grateful. I can’t even do things that I want to do... 🙄😶 Ps.: I still have problems believing that I’m not lazy because of that...
Aww welcome to the tribe!! It’s not laziness, it’s executive function challenges - over the next 2 weeks I’ll be releasing videos on how to set up routines and habits!
Me too !!(31 and diagnosed this year). I started on meds and now I’m super duper productive in things I’m motivated by or must get done lol. Before that I used just sit on the couch and can do nothing ..so bad during holidays - my days would disappear. I do not miss all that brain fog I used to get.
Yen N So happy for you! The meds that I'm taking help with the racing thoughts but not about focusing... But I'm also doing therapy and trying every technique I heard of hehehe I'll find out what will work for me!! But is amazing to have this community that know exactly how we feel!! ❤️❤️
I'm a wife and stay at home mother with some very intense ADHD. Before having my daughter this year, I was okay at keeping up with my BUJO when I only had to manage myself. Now that I have a 10 month old,I'm finding it overwhelming to manage everything. Any tips for parents and/or homemakers using the BUJO system? Also, what to do when your child decides to rip all the pages out and eat them... or poops on it... both of those things happened last year.
I feel like mine is fairly standard, but I get very creative with the aesthetics of it. I’ve noticed the more time and thought and creativity I put into it, the more likely I am to use it. Lately setting up a weekly spread has been a whole process of rulers, colored pencils, pens, markers, the works, and sometimes I’ll take in upwards of an hour to get ready for a new week or month. But putting that time in makes me feel like if I don’t use it, I’m putting all that cool stuff and all the work I did on it to waste, which has turned out to be a pretty good motivator. Plus, it’s a really good creative outlet.
I'm completely digital because I have tried to have a paper calendar and goal setting system before but I just don't open it and even loose track of it. I've adapted Habitica to fit the way my brain works as a sort of bujo myself. It's free and syncs across all my devices so I can open it no matter where I am.
I think my #1 interest would be getting a best technique for getting rid of clutter. In the past there might have been some emotional attachment to objects that "didn't deserve" it. Now it's more a problem of, in minutes of starting the process of essentially putting things in the key "piles" of "Keep", "Throw", "Recycle", "Donate", "Sell"... before you know it, I have more piles and categories than I have mental or physical space for. The actual process of getting rid of the stuff almost makes for more disarray than not dealing with it. That's my 2¢! By the way, I think your videos are masterful, maintain a great sense of humor, and have been super enlightening for me! Thanks so much for what you do!
So much bujo love! That’s great! - people should use whatever works for them, but I just want to mention that I tried bujo and it didn’t work for me - what DID work and I’ve been able to really stick to longer than any other planner is the Happy Planner system. The big thing for me is being able to rearrange my sections and add paper to my sections whenever I want (even just plain graph paper for the bujo lovers!).
Wow , I fully understand what he is talking about. I am much older than he is and grew up in the 50s and 60s when Learning disabilities and ADAH were not fully understood, or even accepted. So I struggled for many years. I am proud of both of you i
This planner made my life navigable. ☀️☀️☀️ Could you do an episode on how to pack for trips? I can never plan for what i actually need and i always end up forgetting really important stuff (shoes)...
I've made myself Excel spreadsheets for any kind of trips: funerals, weddings, training, Christmas, etc. Been using them for over 20 years. I just print the list I need and tick off as I find my stuff... My children used them too when they lived with us and they really liked them too. Nicole
Hey Jessica, My I am Nathan from NY and currently in a very similar situation you were in. I just happened to stumbled upon your ted talk. I finally felt like someone actually understood me - understood how it was to have this "condition" if you were to call it that. I procrastinate, I am weird but down inside I just want to succeed as much as everyone else. Hopefully, with the help you provide here it can assist me in my daily life and to succeed where I felt I have failed in the past. I guess what I want to say is thank you. Thank you so much for founding this amazing channel and thank you for having that ted talk. It brought tears to my eyes and I am so glad that I found this tribe. Here is to a new year and a new way of understanding my brain and understanding me. Maybe I can be the one in charge of the remote this time and feel like a fish who isn't trying to climb a tree.
The INDEX has saved my life. Really. I'm so excited about this (for now granted) but I think I can actually do this. Thank you Ryder Carrol and Jessica. SO amazing! I've never been excited about a journal like this.
"Omg a bujo app?? That sounds amazi-" "It deletes entries after 48 hours" "Ah bummer... well, I guess I could still make us-" "Only available on iOS" "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO D'="
Hey Jessica, I started giving me points for each day... according to the number of tasks I accomplished out of to do list and adding them up to month level, and comparing how much better we did compared to last month.... This does make us progress a little bit more every day
Hi. Thank you so much for your videos. I highly relate to a lot of adhd traits but don't have a diagnosis yet. I'm an adult and may never get one but your videos have been so helpful making adhd research accessible 💕
Y'all, I just got diagnosed and started taking medication 3 days ago. I can't believe I just managed to sit through a 9 minute video without checking Twitter or getting up to make popcorn or something.
Thank you Jessica for another amazing video, I got diagnosed earlier this year (I'm 33 years old) and your channel has been / are a great source in my quest to understand myself better! Holiday wishes and hugs from Sweden!
Oooh, I totally still use a digital calendar with my bujo!!! I write things down in my bujo if it's handy but I always put things down in my calendar along with allerts and alarms.
So, I found out about you about 3 weeks ago (via your TED talk) and I have to say: whoa, this is amazing. Thank you so much for all the awesome things you do! Also, I started a bujo as well since then and have actually been able to keep on using it (used to quit each planner after a week or two maximum) :D
Got diagnosed half way through my second university year and I feel very welcomed. Super excited because now the world makes sense and I don’t feel crazy anymore.
I just started to use digital calendar last year and it has already helped me a lot, compared with my messy past. This video got me more motivated to do my own bujo. I'm so excited to know that Ryder is "one of us". Also, thank you for developing this system! Okay... I'll try the bujo myself today... okay.... I need to find a notebook somewhere...
I just started thinking about the Bullet Journal today. I've been making a big list in a notebook that just has calendars in the front for a while now, but my son (10) needed something doable and his oldest sister (25) recommended it. Thank-you so much for putting these Bujo videos together, I haven't shown them to him yet but I was SO inspired that I made one (I'll have to figure out how to repurpose that other notebook) in a small pocket journal from Hobby Lobby, (they're in the stationary section) you can get several and they have matching pens and bookmarks. 😃 YAY!!! Thanks again! I also think I'll plan on transferring anything important to my phone's calendar in the evening when I take my Valerian Root so I can 'Put my day away and rest' ...that's the idea anyway.
So much awesomeness! I remember hearing somewhere what can I do in the next 10 minutes that will take me closer to my goals? It’s something I’ve kept with me. What I would want to know is how do I use the bujo to better define my goals? On a different note: so thankful I’ve found the bullet journal, I work in an office and without it I would be fried. Like seriously. It stays at work (when I don’t carry it home to film my monthly setup) and it’s the first thing I do each morning. There was a month I barely touched it and it took weeks to feel back on track again, what I’ve learnt is you gotta spend time to save time with planning. I do decorate mine a bit, because it’s my motivator to keep doing it. The colors also work very well with my brain, it doesn’t work with boring. It shuts down. That’s also something id like to know like how do you stay motivated with the bujo? How can you use visuals to get it working? My own approach is that the decorative part is done in a wink, like when I need to refocus I put a sticker in it or make a quick doodle. Also where does a notebook stop being a bullet journal and start being something else?
One thing I've learned this year regarding clutter piles I avoid dealing with is to tell myself, "this pile can be here another 24 hours or I can have it cleaned up in 20 minutes if I focus only on this one thing..." I went through Mari Kondo's Tidying books and my goal is to complete the task this winter!
subscribed after watching your ted talk. 5 minutes into that talk, when you started getting emotional, i started crying. i feel like im not the only one. maybe im not broken afterall. hopefully your channel will help me
I've just started working on my bullet journal. Thank you so much for the recommendation. I'd heard of it before this but hadn't really looked into it until my girlfriend introduced me to your videos. I was diagnosed at the age of 8 and have struggled with finding anything to help. Your videos have given me some amazing ideas that are actually working! There are actually four of us working together daily to help each other out with accountability and making use of many of your ideas and the ideas that you've shared of others. Thank you, again.
Jessica, I discovered your UA-cam channel last month and I've now been through most of your videos. I can' thank you enough for what you have done for me and others like us. By the way, I ordered my first bullet journal #bujo today. Looking forward to it.
I would like to see how you plan each week using the bullet journal in combination with using an electronic calendar. I love your videos by the way. So grateful that you decided to do videos on UA-cam. You are very encouraging and fun too watch and who doesn't like fun. 😁
For this time being, I haven't been diagnosed as adhd but I know the symptoms I having is adhd. I once working with corporate organisation that needs me to do management jobs. It makes me distracting to finish and organized a task in timeline or with deadline. I just can't get to coop with it everytime and makes my performance drops after a year. So I decided to quit that job and started my own business. Now, I decided to live with ADHD and I would like to start with this bujo for planning my years. Thanks a lot Jessica. I hope I can keep consistently doing my bujo for this 2019. I inspired with this tribe 😉
I found a planner that is basically a bullet journal but the index is already "built in" there's a spot for monthly and weekly planning, a section for notes, a place for important names and addresses, etc and for my daily bujo I have a little notebook that fits in my back pocket that I keep with me. I also use my phone for some things (anything I need to remember and set a reminder for). Being a brain is tons of fun ;)
He described breaking tasks up into "small, actionable SPRINTS." Never heard anyone describe a part of a task as a sprint & I really like it. Sprints are short and do-able.
I like it too. The FlyLady uses 5-10-15 minutes to clean-up the house. It's doable and less overwhelming. Same applies with our honey-do list. Love the term Sprints. Nicole
I Love this! My bujo is my best friend when I need it and my most forgotten cousin when life runs smooth. My goal for new years though is to use it more and to make it my resting place when I need to unwind.
I recently found this awesome channel last week and subscribed! I’m ADHD and wasn’t officially diagnosed until about 3rd or 4th grade and I’m learning so many things from this channel that I never learned during any session with my psychiatrists for my ADHD! I just love it! I pretty much binge watched all of your videos. XD I haven’t started a bujo yet, but it’s going to happen as soon as I get a fresh notebook to use!
Grab an old one, tear out the used pages and start today. Then, after the holidays... say maybe a month from today (to develop the habit and get a better picture of what works for you) write "buy the prefect bujo notebook in your future planner!
I’m going to look into switching my Bujo to a Rocketbook Everlast notebook. I really like the Bujo since I started using it a few months ago, but I tend to run out of paper a lot in the size I can keep in my purse... I think having reusable paper that can be uploaded to apps I already use may help, but we shall see!
I keep a reusable bullet journal for my work life. It is a great addition. Personal life, I've tried it but I like to decorate my layouts too much. I'm trying a digital tablet ReMarkable for my personal bullet journal. But there again, a little lacking in color. But still good for the low key, minimalistic, functional system. How is Rocketbook working for you?
6:29 "Put it first. If there's something you don't want to do, just do it first thing in the morning. And that doesn't mean the hardest thing but it's the most challenging thing. [...] 6:39 Whatever the thing is you really don't want to do, I always try to do that first, and that helps a lot because by the time you're done with it, then everything else that day is going to be more fun."
Hello! I just discovered your channel. Would you be interested in doing a video on hyperfocus? I'm lucky enough to be studying something I'm incredibly passionate about in university, so my ADHD is actually helping me a lot of the time at school (it's at home where I fall apart). Thanks for sharing your experiences and your positivity!
I just ordered 2 new bujo notebooks today. 1) Neuro Diverse & 2) Don't Forget the Thing! Plus a bunch of stickers to put in my shiny new bujo journals! Yea!
An index at the beginning of a notebook is a total game changer! That is genius! I love notebooks but I have never gotten them to work because they are not organized and I just can't find the information
Thank you so much for this video! I'm surprised that you talked with Ryder for less than a day xD Bullet journal helps me so much! I usually keep it on the table near my bed and after waking up, one of the first thing is to read the journal. Hopefully, the app will come soon to Android system because it would be awesome to download it! Have a great New Year! Don't commit too much for the next year and good luck to you and all the other brains stick to the commitments for New Year without procrastination!
i only discovered the bullet journal yesterday...experiencing overload...woke up and you tube had graduated to this video and then....any progress is progress
He's one of us! I tend to put stuff in mine after the fact. I'm going to work on actually using it to plan instead of to record what I did. I have been having fun decorating it though!
I loved this!! I don't have ADHD myself but I've also had some trouble with the same sort of things. My #bujo question is if his way of using his bujo has changed after seeing what other people have figured out? You know like spreads, trackers, collections and so on.
I used meditation videos to help flush out those anxiety like rush of thoughts. Even sleep hypnosis videos. It helped calm things down and subconciously remove the clutter i didn't necessarily need at those moments.
So basically I'm relearning what I did in college to cope and get by. Only I didn't have the $ for an electronic scheduler, so I broke it down into small parts to tackle. Thanks for this!
I'd like to ask Ryder any tips to getting back on track with bujo habits after week or even a month of checking it barely once a week? In general, I love my bujo and I've been modding the system for my work notes as well, it is one of the most helpful systems, I've had chance to try. If I only could stick to it! ^^; #bujo
Check out Ryder Carroll's website for more info! www.bulletjournal.com
How to ADHD Gah This sounds fun to try. But I need that motivation.
how to actualy stick to the bujo?? #buzu
How to ADHD Can you do a video about having a crush while also having ADHD
YO, Ryder's site link isn't working presently.
That’s such a good idea! I have to incorporate that.
kierraa05 you should!
I've heard that called a "spice rack." When you think of something tasty but distracting, put it on the spice rack and try it out later :D
Melissa Bryant no problem!
I love hearing that the bullet journal was made by an ADHD brain, because when I heard about bujo I thought it was for people who could organize and automatically figured that it wouldn't work for ADHD brains. So glad to hear from the founder that it works for brains!
oh thought he said ADD but is okay
Agreed! When he said it was a coping mechanism, I was like DUAH!! Regular brains wouldn't think of it this way.
@@UwU-lm9or ADD is ADHD, just the inattentive type :)
Jessica touches on this frequently on the channel including these two amazing videos:
"What is ADHD": ua-cam.com/video/xMWtGozn5jU/v-deo.html
"Why My Channel is Called How to ADHD (not ADD)
": ua-cam.com/video/oBx7RjPAFrg/v-deo.html
Basically, current diagnoses of ADHD are one of 3 different "presentations"
1. Predominately hyperactive/ impulsive
2. Predominately inattentive (What used to be "ADD")
3. Combined
Aside: for the record, I, though much later than my family members, also received an ADHD diagnosis (predominately inattentive). We got hit hard really, really hard by the ADHD gene (that really, *really* strong family link was a big part of the reasoning behind my doctor diagnosing me).
Got officially diagnosed on Thursday and start meds on Saturday...I. AM. SO. EXCITED.
welcome to the tribe!!! we're here to support!
Good luck I've been struggling with the side effects
But the postives are really good
How to ADHD thank you!
Diced Rice goood idea !! I want a small book too, but I only have a5 size ones
Lina Boshof try Field Notes.
Field notes... Great idea Christian! You can even find versions that have dots like a BuJo. They are 3½" × 5½" 48 Pages with rounded corners so are easy to slip into a pocket.
Me too! I found some good ones that fit in my back pocket.
You go, girl! I can't wait to see it!
😁 but that doesn't solve the problem of forgetting what I'm saying in the middle of saying it...🤔
Anyways, thank you for your post! I needed it! 🤗
The information only holds for 48 hours, that's super smart. It give procrastinator like me have the sense of urgency to get it done.
My respect for Ryder has absolutely skyrocketed. Thanks for having him on your show and even more so thanks to Ryder for being so humble... What a cool person.
I don't even have adhd, but the life advice on this channel is generally brilliant and compassionate for anyone to learn from.
I got frustrated that my bujo wasn't perfect but now I see that was the whole point. For it to be imperfect
I love love love seeing how other people use their Bullet Journals. Especially fellow Brains! Mine is 95% memories, thoughts, and lists and about 5% planning.
cool idea!!! Who'd be willing to share?
I still pretty much use the original system.
KATRINA HAUER that what I love about the BuJo. It’s 100% versatile and customizable.
Max Left-handed here, I feel your pain
I’m left handed too!! I feel your struggle!
Fellow lefty here, the struggle is real.
Started my bujo ages ago, unfortunately I fell out of the habit. Your post was a great reminder to revisit and relearn it. Sadly it has been sitting on my under utilised launch pad... Which reminds me I need to start using that more too.... Oh and mediation.... And lists.... And... Ah crap.... Right... Think today could end up being a duvet day....
noooo don't get overwhelmed! You don't have to do everything at once, it's actually better if you don't
How to ADHD I will keep an eye opened for it... Oh and love what you all are doing with this channel
aww thanks!
Hey everyone, Michaels craft stores have AMAZEBALLS journals almost exactly like a Leuchterm book, in graph, dot grid, or lined paper for only FIVE BUCKS!
+1 Just picked a couple up the other day! They actually honored a buy-one-get-one deal that was posted in the store, so two for $5! Sweet.
That's where I got my. Now I'm starting my first bujo in 2018
Margaret Gardner I wish I would have a michaels in my area !! But Germany closed the last michaels in 20... I think
also Barnes and Noble has all their planners (included dotted ones) on sale at the end of year for half price
Are the pages nice and thick?
Oh my...I’m 65 and have been making lists with check boxes for over 40 years; could not understand why I couldn’t hold onto anything if it wasn’t down on paper. Never heard of a bullet journal until now! Or, that OTHER people needed them to get through! Your videos are so validating: I AM CRAZY, but there’s a REASON! hahaha oh joy
That last one though - doing the thing. So much motivation for organizing the thing, none for actually doing the thing lol
It's a whole mood.
Ryder Carroll, you are such an extremely. goodlooking. man. Too stunned to follow the video right now. 😅
looking for this comment, i know right? i was like O_O
Very relatable!!
Good point! I'll try to update when it comes out!
And diagnosis or no, if you have ADHD or similar struggles, if you're here for you you're a brain! If you're here to support someone you love you're a heart :D
Look up the paper bullet journal. The app is a help, not the system itself.
I did that too!!! Now I can use my bujo to find my phone, too!
Omg great idea!!!!
I always wanted one but my DH didn't see the need. Now I do!!! I keep losing my BuJo. And my keys, and my purse, and my Kindle... Thanks for the tip, Nicole
#bujo question for Ryden: What's your favorite bujo page invented by the community?
Hi im Carlton from South Africa, before i was diagnosed I always thought of myself as a child, that I could'nt grow up, that im just being unnessacary or not trying hard enough so i stopped everything that made me Me, so thank you Jessica and everyone on this page, you guys have given me the courage to be Me and not think that something is wrong with me, before this channel ive always felt alone and that no one understands me, Im so proud to be part of this awesum community and I appreciate and love you all...
Me and two of my adhd friends go for coffee sometimes, we start 930 ish am and usually don’t shut up until three of four am
I found out about bullet journal in your first video about that, and now, I was almost giving up about all this journalling stuff; suddenly, you came up with this AWESOME video, thank you so much for that!
yay that's so cool to hear! Let us know how it goes!
Thank you I really needed this now I have been terrible recently
I can already feel myself overwhelmed by the task of creating one so I may have to watch your video a million more times.
you need to watch the original video from the creator of the bullet journal
highly recommend the audiobook by Ryder Carroll talking through how and why of the Bullet Journal. Its really inspiring
@@chriscollins2548 I had to hear it instead of reading it on a screen. And it has so much information but a great voice to listen to.
yah totally
Fantastic! I am so impressed with the dialogue, the back and forth, the compassion, and the progressive wisdom here.
I was drawing and wasn't paying attention.... Time to press replay!
Nicole
@@thepeddler9226 You wouldn't happen to have a good trip list outline, would you?
@@supersky7711 It's on Excel; would you like a copy? Let me know and I will translate it for you (it's in French).
Hey Jessica,
My I am Nathan from NY and currently in a very similar situation you were in.
I recently found this channel. Thank you so much for all the help, I finally know where I belong! Thank you and Merry Christmas!
The INDEX has saved my life. Really. I'm so excited about this (for now granted) but I think I can actually do this. Thank you Ryder Carrol and Jessica. SO amazing! I've never been excited about a journal like this.
"Omg a bujo app?? That sounds amazi-"
"It deletes entries after 48 hours"
"Ah bummer... well, I guess I could still make us-"
"Only available on iOS"
"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO D'="
I had that too for a second then remembered I'm back on iOS. Android is coming next year though hopefully!
My thoughts exactly...
Al Starrmer my life in 5 sentences
Update on this: it's on Android now!
@@psychsoma I watched the video now, when it is available. Feeling lucky :D
I can't believe I just managed to sit through a 9 minute video without checking Twitter or getting up to make popcorn or something.
wait...I wonder if my meds are working, I didn't either, and i actually listened...
I just missed 2 minutes of it by playing with the cat and had to rewind 🤦♀️ - I think I need to get around to getting that diagnosis ...
@@lavendergilly5843 Probably cause the guy is attractive and gave you some dopamine by looking at him.. hahaha XD
This could be the best Ryder interview I've seen on UA-cam. It's honest and straight to the point.
Also, I started a bujo as well since then and have actually been able to keep on using it (used to quit each planner after a week or two maximum) :D
wow ok this made me cry. there's just something about people understanding The Struggle that gets me every time.
Got diagnosed half way through my second university year and I feel very welcomed. Super excited because now the world makes sense and I don’t feel crazy anymore.
Girl your first vid was perfect no need to get rid of it !! Much love for you mama brain
lol thanks but there was a black screen every few seconds during the interview, I knew it would drive some people crazy. Thanks for the support!
How to ADHD it’s okay girl, I totally understand. Video-making is Kinda hard!! You do great ! I’m always excited to see a new video from you!
love the support, thank you so much!!!
you are both the best people ever. thank you both.
This might be the best clip on bullet journaling of all, thanks for creating it. Much love from Vienna!
One thing I've learned this year regarding clutter piles I avoid dealing with is to tell myself, "this pile can be here another 24 hours or I can have it cleaned up in 20 minutes if I focus only on this one thing..." I went through Mari Kondo's Tidying books and my goal is to complete the task this winter!
ryder has a really comforting voice 😬
subscribed after watching your ted talk.
#bujo one more question!! or maybe it's more of a request... Can we see his bujo? Pleeeaaase?!
I already asked, he says it's private so he can't show it. But you can see his video on his website to get a sense of it.
I've seen this idea called "Eating the frog." You eat the frog first and the rest of the day has /got/ to be better than that!
This is just a recipe for not getting anything done that day for me 😢
What an awesome interview !!!! Jessica you are doing a fantastic job. I am so grateful for your job and the team. Blessed be !
Thanks for fixing. Great video!
I am working on setting up my bullet journal
He's one of us! I tend to put stuff in mine after the fact. I'm going to work on actually using it to plan instead of to record what I did. I have been having fun decorating it though!
So glad I happened on this video...I’m giving the #bujo another shot as I completely dropped the ball a few months ago. Thx Ryder for the info!
I really enjoy your videos. thank you for doing this.
You make me feel like I've found my tribe
I loved this!! I don't have ADHD myself but I've also had some trouble with the same sort of things. My #bujo question is if his way of using his bujo has changed after seeing what other people have figured out? You know like spreads, trackers, collections and so on.
can’t. focus. for. over. 3 minutes.
send. help.
You can do the thing! XD
hahahaha grab a fidget! :D you can also speed it up if you want, up to 2x
How to ADHD wowwww imagine if we could do that to life...!
Yeeeeah I caught the beginning and end. For the rest I was in another tab and I have no idea what happened.
I used meditation videos to help flush out those anxiety like rush of thoughts. Even sleep hypnosis videos. It helped calm things down and subconciously remove the clutter i didn't necessarily need at those moments.
How to ADHD you are my favorite UA-camr
THANK YOU SO MUCH! Your page has honestly saved me from a downward spiral
So basically I'm relearning what I did in college to cope and get by. Only I didn't have the $ for an electronic scheduler, so I broke it down into small parts to tackle.
Thanks for this!
My ADHD is on another level. I literally have 124 Chrome browser tabs open of videos I need to watch or articles which I need to read
I'd like to ask Ryder any tips to getting back on track with bujo habits after week or even a month of checking it barely once a week? In general, I love my bujo and I've been modding the system for my work notes as well, it is one of the most helpful systems, I've had chance to try. If I only could stick to it! ^^; #bujo
watching these videos helps me to clean or.organize thank.you
Really helpful video. Just soaking this all in for 2018. Got my medicine and Im ready to really tackle my adhd head on! I will be successful!
