I love how she brings the focus on healthspan and living a more comfortable life rather than just trying to extend a painful and degraded state. Rather than trying to extend life, focusing on the health problems with aging makes so much more sense and like she said would probably result in more years anyway. My biggest fears with aging is developing something like Alzheimer’s, it’s really reassuring to remember how hard people are working to ease these issues
I particularly like the study where they showed that people that used "sildenafil" (viagra) was 69% less likely to develop Alzheimer’s.
Whether you get Alzheimer's is more up to you than anyone else. It's your choice what lifestyle you lead, what diet you adopt, what you choose to eat and what you choose to prioritize. Laying back and going "oh, we got a load of genius scientists on the case, I'll just let them find the cure and I'll enjoy myself meanwhile" is a terrible idea. Prevention is always better and easier to achieve than the cure.
What we fear, we attract more of. Focus on life and remaining healthy and not the chances of getting Alzheimer’s. Worrying only creates more stress -> disease.

I was hoping that someone asked about the leaps in aging we make and I suppose they kind of did. I read years ago that we don't age outwardly day by day, but rather there are these seismic events that age us a lot all at one time. So maybe you cruise through your early 30s and still look 26, but then you get a divorce and suddenly you're aged by 10 years. Based on what I've seen in life, that seems to be true.
The exemple of divorce is a life event of big stress, which, in short, makes you age faster
Like presidents before and after office
more stress = faster aging
this is why presidents look like they've done meth their entire lives after their presidency ends, running a country and being involved in scandals all the time isn't healthy
COVID definitely aged me. Not getting it, but the stress of the years.
My whole life is stress since I’ve been 12 and I’m 23. How come I look like 15? I’ve always looked VERY young no matter the bullying or other really stressfull things?
She looks so excited and happy to be answering the questions, especially about epigenetics. Really makes the video like 100x more interesting and entertaining to watch!

Love that she's talking about healthspan vs. lifespan. Similarly, I think we need to stop talking about "healthy" vs. "sick" as though it were binary. There is a wide spectrum with very sick people on one end and extremely fit people on the other.
It's not even just healthy and sick that's has a spectrum, Everything in life is a spectrum, we all just categorize the extremes of both ends because it's easier to understand

The way her facial expressions and gestures operates as she explains is like an asmr to me.
No.1 way to slow down ageing of the skin is to wear sunscreen. Sun exposure is the biggest factor in wrinkles developing quickly. Don't go tanning ladies, wear sunscreen!!
This type of research is what we should really start pouring money into imo. If we could maintain our youthfulness, we wouldn't have to worry about Alzheimers, cancer, heart disease, arthritis, etc.
To clarify, our youthfulness in biological age (the health of our organs and overall system), which is important, not the aesthetic signs of chronological aging (lines, wrinkles) that people complain about.
Excellent, thank you.
She seems like a great professor. She did a great job of explaining biology jargon without dumbing it down too much or being condescending.
We can reverse aging in whole organisms such as worms and mice. There is no reason to think we cannot do the same for people at some point.
They are trying to not get people excited.
except, listen. just because we can do something for one organism doesn't mean it is possible to do it for another. there is a reason why we can do it in worms. they're extremely simple organisms in comparison to humans. it's like saying, "well, I was able to jump over a six inch wide puddle the other day. there's no reason I can't jump across the Atlantic ocean someday"
@@sethescope Your comparison is hyperbolically disingenuous though. You're talking about something that can't possibly be improved, at least not realistically for this century or even the next. In reality it's more like this, "Well this weird flying contraption by the Wright brothers can travel 136m, there's no reason it can't travel the entire Atlantic ocean someday." There you go, a more honest comparison. Considering how we are now very quickly learning what makes the body age and what needs to be fixed, in the end it's all a biological engineering problem that's not even close to the difficulty of what you're describing. Oh and please tell me what we've learned to this day that will make us able to jump across the Atlantic ocean, realistically and step by step, that you would compare it to our current knowledge of aging.
@@AnifreakGedsparrow wow, you got really worked up by a comment you disagreed with. sorry I hurt your feelings, my bad

I think she’s spot on with the “hangover recall”. I think when you’re younger you were quite happy sleeping a day away - less responsibilities you have to do next day etc. Now it’s like - kids jumping on you, dammit I was meant to clean the house, I’ve just lost an entire day GAH! 😅
The question about age of internal organs and the chronological age helped. Someone once did a series of measurements for a health assessment and said my "internal" age or I forget the term they use was "16" but I was 35 at the time. I was confused. Everyone congratulated me and asked me where the fountain of youth was. I had no idea what they were talking about. Now I am in my forties healthier than everyone around me and still look like I am in my 20s. I guess that internal age or whatever term she used is important. lol.
Another good one
According to my physical therapist I’m starting to lose lubrication in my knee joints and it’s just due to age. I didn’t expect that to happen at age 29.

Some changes in the musculoskeletal system are just normal. As long as you don't have any symptoms of pain and you keep yourself active, do not worry too much about it.

'To live forever is like having a birthday party everyday
and never get to open your presents'
I was curious about the hangover/age correlation she touched on, and not to say she's wrong, but one proven link was due to the liver's decreased capability to deal with certain toxins as you age.
I'm sure she's probably aware of this study, maybe there are things that prove it unreliable but idk
There probably isnt enough research into this to say for sure. Also keep in mind this is usually said by people in their late 20s and 30s and not someone at 60 so the liver function wont be drammatically worse than at 20. Hangover symptoms are also not necessarily the best indicator to how well your body handles the poison since its basically your immune system causing them. Just like with vaccines, a strong response can mean your immunse system is just very active and powerfull so it knocks you out with a mean headache
Our body's rate of metabolism slows down as we age. As the metabolism slows, this reduces the amount of alcohol the body can get rid of before we wake. Like you suggest, the slowed metabolism leads to an elevated level of toxins still in the system. She may be a scientist but she doesn't specialise in this particular field.
Drop your skin routine, sis

Avril Lavigne should be answering this
Physicist here: she might have been ironic in the "Do we age more in Space" question, but just to clarify... the time dilation effects she's talking about are not responsible for any difference in aging. They amount to microseconds...
Hey, either you have 3 microseconds more or not. They accumulate and some day you can live a whole second longer then you would have otherwise.
@@JonesP77 Ahah sure! I did the math for fun: on the ISS astronauts gain about 9 milliseconds over an entire year (it's 0.3 nanoseconds per second). So it would take more than 100 years for the difference to amount to 1 second.
worth it 😎
I think she was trying to consider longer travels/an hypothetical scenario. Also, making the person who asked the question feel less silly.
I think it’s obvious that going into space will have a negative impact on your body: g forces, shifts in gravity and oxigenation, etc.
@@andreaolivo523 hhahaa
I was actually surprised she didn't mention radiation in space. It's a significant health hazard.

Aging in part is an evolved mechanism for a lot of lifeforms to make room in a niche for the younger generations that ideally could have more genetic diversity and changes that increase the fitness of a species and overall help it evolve faster so it has a better chance of surviving. As a species this mechanism makes a lot of sense but as an individual not so much.
Aging is not really something that was evolved, things just break down eventually. BUT we also didnt particulary evolve to have long and healthy lifes either, as in evolutional terms anything that happens to you after giving birth is irrelevant.
@@yakb.7690 Yeah cell break down but they also get replaced, some animals can do this forever, it's called negligible senescence. There are many ways being around after not being able to reproduce helps you pass on your genes, just ask your grandparents.
