    I adored Anora and expect to love the Brutalist. But why aren’t Dune and Challengers higher in the Oscar race? Those are both in my top 3 this year and I consider both to be “prestige” films. Queer lost steam so I don’t see why Challengers can’t build some hype. Just very strange to me how you can even consider Glad 2 when these movies exist🤷🏼‍♂️ Anora feels like this years Anatomy of a Fall for me

    Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.

    The constant comparison of Dune Part 2 to Two Towers not getting Oscar noms is BAFFLING. I’m sorry but this is the second part to a book??? Not a trilogy. I don’t care if Dune Messiah comes after, that doesn’t change that Part 2 was the finale to the first Dune film, and having read the books Messiah is not a Return of the King type book, its not the end of a saga, it doesn’t tie up loose ends from the first book. Part 2 FINISHED the story of Part 1 its as easy as that. I guess we can assume Oscar voters to be morons but i dont understand why Big Picture keeps dismissing Dune Part 2 purely on this basis. Also LOTR’s films were all made at once, Dune Messiah won’t even come out for 5 years at the minimum

Anyone attributing the election to Moonlight’s win, even minutely, is unfortunately playing into that trope.

    I truly hated Emilia Perez and really don't understand the love and praise it is getting, especially for awards consideration. It's aesthetically ugly, the musical aspects are quite jarring, & the story has absolutely no cohesion. It's a total mess, yet somehow is being taken seriously and I really don't understand why. You don't get credit just for taking a big swing if the miss is just as big. If people are looking for movies tackling the trans experience, I Saw the TV Glow and Will & Harper feel much more representative of the community.

      Claiming that Emilia Perez IS not aesthetically beautiful IS ridiculous. This movie is flawless in terms of aesthetic, with the music wonderfully integrated into the story and flowing naturally. Not liking the film should not prevent you from maintaining a minimum level of objectivity. This film achieves what it sets out to do, and given the initial permise, that was no easy task. It does not claim to bé a story about transsexuality, but rather about humanity in général. It's not a movie that advocates for the trans cause, nor does it need to. This movie conveys that non matter how much you wish escape your past, it will catch UP with you. This film is beautiful and emotionally touching. It's not an lgbtq Propaganda film.

    I think it's a huge win for Wicked that it's even being considered as a BP winner. Just a month or two ago it was barely showing up in the Best Picture 10 let alone being considered for a win, same with Ariana. Honestly, most of this time it's seemed like Wicked would only be nominated in Costumes + Hair and makeup, but now people are predicted 7-8 nominations. I hope the hype pays off, the music I've heard snippets of so far sounds fire!

    I need some help understanding the case for Wicked. The case Joanna and Katey seemed to be making was 'it'll slide into the same blockbuster slot with the academy that Barbie did last year'.
    But as we've more or less seen with the academy's recent nomination patterns, they usually only pick one 'blockbuster' nomination. So does that mean Dune 2 won't get picked? I personally find that hard to believe just because of all the technical awards Dune 2 is likely to win. Or will Wicked slide into the the 'women's issues movie' slot and knock something like Baby Girl out?

    • @Jose-sx4ql
      @Jose-sx4ql 12 днів тому

      Usually it's one or two populist films, think Barbenhimer, or Top Gun and Avatar the year prior, Joker and Little Women, this year is a bit weaker because of the writers strike that the field is way more open (not to discount the merits of any of the movies) but that's what I've been hearing from pundits who say some of these wouldn't have made it in if it had been any other year. Everyone has had Dune as the big pick all year and they've been thinking that maybe Gladiator or Joker 2 were going to be the other one but those two movies are not doing well with critics so the spot is going to Wicked who no one knew how it was going to perform.

    The depiction of Mexico isnt bad. As a Mexican i am not mad at it. The acting itself is good. The story is at least interesting, what gets me is having Zoe be Dominican and no very clearly indicate that she is and is now living in Mexico and working there as a lawyer and it isnt dawning on anyone that is what is happening. There are black people in mexico she could have played a true mexican, by getting the accent right , but i feel like this movie did not make the efford to cast any mexicans as the main characters or give the actors the time to sound and feel mexican. Selena is supposed to be a mexican american women that still cannot speak spanish fluently even after living in mexico for years, just give the girl more time to get it right. The lady playing Epifania is the only mexican actress in the cast and she does an amazing job. I think from the mexican audience she is the only that makes sense in this story. Everything else feels fake. Like a soap opera by way France.
    The other issue i have with it is that the main character is one of the most violent man turn trans women. The trans part is not the issue, the issue is that i am supposed to believe that a men that has inflicted so much violence and death and was probably one creating many of the death and missing of my country has a sudden chance of heart and now wants to help people find their missing death. The story just didnt give me enough to belive the change. Just didnt.

    It happens almost every year, something that is complete trash getting a good amount of nominations and a surprising win or two. Emilia Perez and Wicked are that this year. I fully expect Emilia Perez to get like 8 noms and 2 wins, or Wicked to get 10 noms and 4 wins while something like Anora, Dune pt 2, The Brutalist (I don't think you guys are ready for this to get snubbed as hard as i think it might), or Challengers/Queer get a ho hum 3 nominations and zero wins. The academy is insistent on being like the Grammys, especially in recent years.

    I know Joanna didn't mean it that way probably, but I really don't like the whole 'omg Amy Adams and Margot Robbie haven't won an Oscar but Ariana Grande might?' sentiment. Idk if she deserves to win or not, but I really believe she's put her 110% into this role and going by the reviews so far...everyone's placing her as a high point of the movie (including Sean right here), so I feel it's a bit....dismissive and anti-meritocracy. Like what does it matter who's won or not? If Ariana gives the best performance out of the 5 nominees (if she's even nominated), then why shouldn't she win?
    Also it's two completely different scenarios. If Ariana Grande had two STELLAR performances like Lily Gladstone and Emma Stone happening in her category, she'd probably be out of the conversation too.

    • @Jose-sx4ql
      @Jose-sx4ql 12 днів тому +1

      100% Agree, it prob wasn't intentional but it came of as biased hater energy, not only did Ariana have to prepare for the acting, dancing and singing but she also had to overcome all the people who were doubting her for no reason other than the fact she's an incredible pop star. The reviews saying she steals the movie are proof she has done all of that so then why would a nomination be such a crazy thing? On top of that she's getting nominated in Supporting Actress which has always been friendlier to musical performances, if anything she's the Ryan Gosling in Barbie of the season, she's getting the exact same type of reviews and love. To me looking at all those factors it makes sense. Also should we then be mad at Mikey Madison who's only other role was in Scream?

    I think it's time to disband the academy if Emilia Perez is anywhere near any major awards.
