I adored Anora and expect to love the Brutalist. But why aren’t Dune and Challengers higher in the Oscar race? Those are both in my top 3 this year and I consider both to be “prestige” films. Queer lost steam so I don’t see why Challengers can’t build some hype. Just very strange to me how you can even consider Glad 2 when these movies exist🤷🏼♂️ Anora feels like this years Anatomy of a Fall for me
Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.
The constant comparison of Dune Part 2 to Two Towers not getting Oscar noms is BAFFLING. I’m sorry but this is the second part to a book??? Not a trilogy. I don’t care if Dune Messiah comes after, that doesn’t change that Part 2 was the finale to the first Dune film, and having read the books Messiah is not a Return of the King type book, its not the end of a saga, it doesn’t tie up loose ends from the first book. Part 2 FINISHED the story of Part 1 its as easy as that. I guess we can assume Oscar voters to be morons but i dont understand why Big Picture keeps dismissing Dune Part 2 purely on this basis. Also LOTR’s films were all made at once, Dune Messiah won’t even come out for 5 years at the minimum

I need some help understanding the case for Wicked. The case Joanna and Katey seemed to be making was 'it'll slide into the same blockbuster slot with the academy that Barbie did last year'. But as we've more or less seen with the academy's recent nomination patterns, they usually only pick one 'blockbuster' nomination. So does that mean Dune 2 won't get picked? I personally find that hard to believe just because of all the technical awards Dune 2 is likely to win. Or will Wicked slide into the the 'women's issues movie' slot and knock something like Baby Girl out?
Usually it's one or two populist films, think Barbenhimer, or Top Gun and Avatar the year prior, Joker and Little Women, this year is a bit weaker because of the writers strike that the field is way more open (not to discount the merits of any of the movies) but that's what I've been hearing from pundits who say some of these wouldn't have made it in if it had been any other year. Everyone has had Dune as the big pick all year and they've been thinking that maybe Gladiator or Joker 2 were going to be the other one but those two movies are not doing well with critics so the spot is going to Wicked who no one knew how it was going to perform.

Honestly, the best and most emotional film of the year is THE WILD ROBOT and it is not particularly close at this point.
emilia perez is one of the best fims i've seen this year. Ghostlight, Stranger Darling are better. I'ver not seen Anora yet
ghostlight was soooo fucking gooooddddd. absolutely underrated film for the year.
@@drew_m_r I'm amazed more people are not talking about it.
the tone is conan obrian yuck
Anora is probably a Trump voter. Certainly all the other characters are.
"I can't mentally cope with a vote going a different way to I wanted it to. Therefore I'm going to change my vote for the oscars." Such humans exist?
Just buy some big boy underwear and get on with it.
Fortunately, Amanda Dobbins is not on this episode of the Big Picture Podcast. 5/5 stars
