The look on Brad's face when he finally realized what the song was about! 😂😂😂
He hit it on the head about it being about masterbation and being lonely
That was fucking priceless! That slow, but then sudden realization 🤣🤣🤣
I think this song should be especially relatable for the 30 and under crowd today: going out less and less, having sex less and less but watching more porn, often unemployed or only sporadically employed....
"😳🤣"
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I grew up with Billy and Mike.. haven't spoken to either in 30 years mind you. I still flashback to them playing Def Leppard, Ozzy, and Motley Crue covers at grade school dances. I'm happy they made successes of themselves.
Lucky!
I was at Lollapalooza 94 and they were onstage when I got there. They didn't play any of their own music. Instead they played Metal Health from Quiet Riot. The entire album. I thought it was strange but I was only 17.
They played my friends 17th birthday about 9 months before Dookie came out lol! Missed it though I got grounded and couldn't go! I used to meet them a few times at the Coop Punk With Presses where one of my friends lived! Lol still never seen them in concert!
It's funny, in 1987 the band Death Angel stayed at my parents' house on their first US tour for the "Ultra-Violence" record. It was a last-minute gig because one of their shows in Ohio had been cancelled at last minute, so my buddy booked them to play a hall show and they drove up to Michigan. Their tour manager at the time had worked for Slayer. Years later he became Green Day's tour manager, I heard him on a podcast talking about how the guys in Green Day always ask him about the thrash metal days.
That must make you feel old. I feel old when I here them on my local classic rock station.
Honestly, Green Day have a plethora of classics you'll love.
"Plethora", nice word! Makes me think of The Three Amigos 🤣
they have 2 good albums, first and second....
The combo of not having motivation and being depressed is very common, most people with depression have a lack of interest in pretty much everything which leads to lack of motivation. Also, it’s very common for guys to “choke the chicken” when they’re bored because it’s just something to do, and if you have no motivation, you’re going to sit around bored a lot, so you might “choke the chicken” a lot.
I've never heard 'choke the chicken' before! 🤣
@@an1malsr0ck it was used in the video. That’s why I used it.
Another masturbation song
As a teenager I suffered almost totally debilitating depression, which for some reason goes hand in hand (pun intended?) with unrelenting horniness. And yeah, even when you want/need to do something, you can't peel yourself off your velcro seat
Like p8ppo
Lex, “maybe it gets in his eyes”. I’m dying 🤣🤣🤣
This album is great. Welcome To Paradise, Longview, When I Come Around, and Basket Case are my favorite songs from this album
Those are the singles.
No way burnout, she, sassafras roots etc way better then the mtv songs
She
F.O.D and the secret song
also she
The entire Dookie album is tremendous! I personally recommend the song Sassafras Roots; it's an underrated gem.
Christy road.
I love Sassafras Roots
My buddy Brian would sit and listen to dookie for hours. 90’s were 🔥. He’s gone now., but the memories are golden.
@@GlamprinceRockking That one's Kerplunk, but I too enjoy that song. Def in my top 10 Green Day songs
@@ThisDude234 I know.
I own it on CD had it for 27 years.
Yes Brad that is def something parents would tell their teenage boys especially. "My mother told me if I didn't stop I would go blind so I figured I'd just do it until I needed glasses."
Or that your palms will get hairy.
ROTFL - an idea for a great Harry Potter sketch just popped into my head
Lmao 😂💀
trust me, we needed bands like Green Day and Blind Melon and Offspring and Green Jello to mix it up with everything else being so heavy all the time.
Cant say Jello.
Fun fact, Mike Dirnt, the bassist, was tripping balls when he came up with that amazing bass line, and I'm order to not forget it, he played it repeatedly until Billie came in to write it down
2:23 thats Green Day for you...
Really some of the most simple riffs and chords you'll ever see a band use.
But they've actually made it sound incredibly well...
Most bands need over the top solo's and stuff the liven up their sound, these guys had the same effect with the basics.
It says alot about the 90s when this was the song the band and label thought would be a hit, and they were right. This was the chosen introduction of the band to the world.
@Master Kush i looked it up and yes, it was apparently
I always thought it was When I Come Around...at least that's the first track that got heavy rotation in my part of the world.
@Master Kush that's interesting, I guess When I Come Around just feels like it should be the first single off Dookie, seeing as it is arguably the most radio-friendly track off of Dookie. Once that came out they absolutely blew up here in NZ and have had a huge following ever since!
I thought Basket Case was their first single.
Y'all got me doubting my memory so I looked it up... from Wikipedia: "'Longview' is the debut single by American rock band Green Day. It is the fourth track on the band's third studio album, Dookie (1994) and their first single as a band. "
"You'll go blind" is an Old Wives Tale. Like, "Your face will get stuck like that" or "You'll put someone's eye out."
^This, I think it was also was something along the lines of, at least in some cases, "it's a sin and that is how God will punish you." kinda thing.
Another myth was you'll grow hair on your palms.
@@leftofpunk I remember that one.
Ah - I'll let my kids know they can run with scissors now
Brad & Lex, their "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" and "When I Come Around" are next for you!
I don't think Green Day knew that this 1994 album 'Dookie' would sell 10 million copies in the US when they recorded it... According to the band, they didn't even use their entire advance that their label Reprise gave them. They shot a cheap video for 'Longview' and were shocked when it became a hit on MTV... 'Basket case' and 'When I come around' were even bigger singles... the album 'Dookie' went into the top 5 charts and Green Day became an overnight sensation.
Their best album hands down. Fight me
Green Day came along as a front runner of punk wave 2. Wave 1 was Ramones, Sex Pistols, and all the bands that came out pre-82. Then there was a lull in punk. Green Day, NoFX, and the like came out in the mid-late '80s with more complex lyrics, different rhythms, but still the simple 3-4 person band and 2-3 chord songs. As Green Day continued to have mainstream success, their sound defined wave 3 with being more pop punk. Additionally, their musical skills grew to the point where Billy Joe was actually writing stuff for Broadway which led to American Idiot the stage show. This song and this album moved Green Day from the punk underground to mainstream music.
Dookie was the first CD I ever bought with my own money. I bought it with Offspring’s album Smash. Love every song on this album. Even though I prefer grunge over alternative, Dookie and Smash were really pivotal in the transition of the rock sound of the time. To me, this is album is an absolute classic.
Yo same. Wow that's crazy. First 2 CDs I bought too
Dookie was my first ever CD too! I was 9 and didn't truly know what I was getting into at the time but it opened a door to the world of punk I never knew existed outside of my parents music. Took a couple more years to really bloom but Dookie was for sure the gateway.
Mine too! I had the cassette and as soon as CD’s came out, the Dookie album was my first CD i ever bought. Played on the Sony Discman. That gray ugly thing that skipped if you got to rockin too hard. Ahhhhh the 90’s
@@B-Killin or skipped just causally walking down the street. I hated that
@@edreedson yeah it was sensitive. Then came out the fancy anti skip technology that was so futuristic haha.
Oh man, haven't heard this song in years! I was listening to this in elementary school in the early 90's. Takes me back.
as an overall career, I'm not super into Green Day, but this album is in my top 10 of my life. This is the first album I learned on guitar! 8th grade! all power chords
Agreed. Im not really a Green Day fan, but I can’t deny that this album is pretty damn great. Brings me back to the 6th grade when me and my friends were ALL ABOUT it.
Nobody really liked them that much back then. I was more into offspring.
@@thisisisabella3634 Yeah except this album I also wasn't a huge fan, was more into Bad Religion and others. But Green Day absolutely rocked live back then.
@@thisisisabella3634 They sure sold a lot of albums for a band that nobody liked.
@@NeonNights80 So did Nickelback.
Lucky enough to see GD on this tour. Pansy Division opened for them. Indpls at the Emerson Theater. I had no idea the sensation they would become. God I miss the 1990s.
"Maybe he gets it in his eyes" I straight up snorted before laughing. Thanks that made me stop dreading going back to work for my second shift.
"You'll go blind." Or "You'll grow a red hair in the middle of your palm." Were the ones I remember from Sunday school. It was a religious thing, for me.
the look on Brad's face when he realized what the song was about...priceless
GO EAGLES!!! BIRDS NATION!!! Saw the profile pic and had to comment.
The lightbulb exploded in Brad’s head. Brad’s a cool dude who would has a soul destined to be a teen in the 90s.
Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong said: "I was just in a creative rut. I was in-between houses sleeping on people's couches. It's a song about trying not to feel pathetic and lonely. I didn't think that masturbation was really seen from the point of view that I was looking at it.”
I think you did a good job of hitting the nail on the head with your reaction. I just saw them last summer Live in Detroit for their Hella Mega Tour with Weezer and Fallout Boy. Green Day sounds as good, maybe cleaner, than when I saw them in 1996! Have a Happy Easter!
They're definitely "cleaner" lol Billie Joe was a full blown tweaker in the mid 90s.
I remember when I first heard this, and I knew these guys would be huge!!!! This was there breakout hit!!!!
LOL this was Green Day's first single. My friend's and I loved Green Day, we all went to their concert at the Nassau Coliseum. Later they had an amazing performance at Woodstock where there got into a mud fight with the crowd and the rest is history. Great band.
PS ... yes, you can go blind and grow hairy palms from pleasuring yourself too much.
That’s why I’m blind and my hands are so hairy
😂
It wasn’t their first single…just the first off this record.
Oh yeah, Green Day had been releasing singles for a few years before this record.
Dookie was their third album
My favorite band, ever since their album dookie in 1994, the introduced me to the punk sound, and I appreciate the band do much
I am a music teacher at U of M, specialized in rhythm, the first bass riff I learned was Mike dirnt's Longview, I still play his signature model, based on the '59 p-bass,
Can't believe you guys have never heard that myth. There's the old joke about how you will go blind and the guy says "can I just do it til I need glasses?"
u mean the guy called master bates?
@@dubiousdistinction6500 Harry Palms
@@1RungAtATime jack meoff
Green Day and The Offspring are good bands to learn on guitar when starting out because they have awesome riffs that mostly aren't too complicated and can be learnt fairly easily.
Dookie is the only album that my dad bought five times. Three times on tape and twice on CD. Although his favorite song was “She”.😂 But this entire album brings back so many good memories.
What's wrong with "She"??? lol
@@robert3602 There’s nothing wrong with it. I was just saying that my dad’s favorite song was She not Longview.
I am a 40 year old fucker too, and she is my favorite song as well
When my cuz and i were young we used to sneak in our older cuzes room and jam Green Day.
thats the beauty of longview, the riffs genius is in its simplicity! its unique yet easy to play
I grew up with a lot of skater friends who were into ska and punk music. We bonded over Wu-Tang because they listened to them too. Anyone into that sound capturing the street and rebellion that skating represents got it. Thats why Wu Tang has such a diverse crowd.
It still cracks me up that a punk rock song about being bored, depressed and jerking off to pass the time was a massive radio hit. The '90s was a crazy time for music. That's what made it so awesome though.
Their song 'She' is such a slept on classic. I love that song.
He's basically singing about being a 90s slacker.
This was the first cassette I ever bought, I was a 7th grader. And yes I said cassette! Went well with my Walkman! 🤣🤣
Great! I started laughing out loud when I saw Brad laugh at the ending. Yeah, going blind is the old wive's tale I thought everyone's heard of.
When songs were written before the internet was a thing. And phone calls were attached to your wall. Good times
Growing up in the 70s/80s I did hear the myth that a person would go blind...lol
Lol! Yes they use to say that on tv, movies, and in songs...that and your palms will get hairy...
the whole "stop or you'll go blind" deal was from back in the day. I don't know when it started but Robin Williams very first movie was called "Can I Do It... 'Til I need Glasses?", it was a sequel to "If You Don't Stop It... You'll Go Blind"
Choke the chicken made me laugh so hard! I'm high but that was funny!
Bro I'm 36 and that phrase will never NOT make me laugh lmao
I just realized how so much of the song is suddenly a new version of "RELEVANT". "sit and watch the tube" could now mean "UA-cam", along with "changing the channels", and "sit around and watch the phone" could come off as "watching a smart phone".
"My mother said to get a job, but she don't like the one she's got", I think that's _everybody's_ mom in America.
2:16 - This is pretty much everybody's reaction to *Final Fantasy VI* after being so used to everything since ff7. "American Idiot" is good, but it was pretty much Green Day's Final Fantasy 7 album. No idea what their Final Fantasy VI album was (or is)... Dookie might be their FF4 album, the one that put GD on the map sts.
Was a pleasure watchin you figure out the meaning of this song in real time. LOL!!!
Loved seeing brad really enjoy this one !
funny you mentioned how the beginning riff sounds easy to play. Im pretty sure Longview is the song during their concert that (in 06) they had a fan come up and play that part for a bit.
LOLOL Your guy's reaction to this was priceless! Love watching your vids!!
"If it gets in his eyes ". 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm dead... Funniest thing I've heard in a long time
Yes baby.. We need more Green Day here!
Lmao that u guys hit the nail on the head quickly with ur lyric analysis
So there's this notorious story from my hometown Corpus Christi, TX. Apparently Greenway used to play a lot of shows back then when they were starting out and hang out with a bunch of local bands that were popular around the scene. There's a band called "Sweet Daddy" and they have a song with a bass line thats basically note for note this one 😅. Inspiration is one thing, but to base an entire structure of a song on bassline you didnt even write.. Cmon Greenday 🤣
It's funny to hear you say this sounds so different for them. This song was mine and a lot of people's introduction to them as it was the first single off of Dookie.
When Brad grins at the end its hilarious!!! Love this!!!
Lex gets it. Head nodding within seconds once that bass line hits haha
My favorite Green Day song.
The Morlocks "My Friend The Bird" & "Get Out Of My Life Woman"
The fact Brad has never heard the saying "masturbation causes blindness" makes me feel old. In the mid to late 90's and into the early 2000's played in a band, and one of my bandmates often wore a shirt that said "Masturbation does not cause blindness", lol.
30 years ago, I'm running around middle school in an oversized Dookie t-shirt, screaming these lyrics lol
Back in the 50s and 60s, they did say you’d go blind, grow hair in your palms and all manner of weird stuff. My favorite line is the one that if you don’t enjoy it for yourself, you’re f-ing lonely.
Having grown up in Longview, (Washington not Texas) I get that this song is about a kid who grows up in a real boring small town. Probably no prospects, and so he has to find ways to entertain himself.
My brother went to an early Greenday concert in Longview, the crowd was going crazy and the band said they would name the song after our town... Whether that is true or the song was already named Longview and they just said that to pander to the crowd I don't know. But my brother going to the concert is true.
Yes, that was a myth they used to tell young boys to scare them. I never could figure the connection. :)
Hairy palms and going blind are old school myths likely created by parents to scare their sons into finding other hobbies that won't make laundry day so intense.
That was a hilarious reaction!😂
That is correct about masturbation, Brad. A friend always used to joke that his mom told him to stop or he would go blind, and he would ask her if he could just do it until he needed glasses.
Green Day has good easy songs to learn. "When I come around" is a really good one for beginner guitar players. I'm sure you guys can learn that in a day.
I miss good Green Day so much
As far as I know, "it'll make you go blind" was always a very British thing, pretty sure this song was the only time I ever heard an American say it. Mind you my parents always said the same thing about drinking whisky.
Reminds me of an old British joke. Dad comes home from work and his wife tells him she caught their teenage son pleasuring himself, and could he have a chat. Dad goes upstairs to the son's room and says "that's a very naughty thing to do, and if you keep doing it you'll go blind!"
Son says "I'm over here, dad!"
This band was one of the many California punk bands that brought punk to the mainstream in the early '90s.
Brads face when he realized what the song is about 🤣🤣🤣
glad you finally got to this one
"Maybe it gets in his eyes"... LMAO, I can never predict what Lex is going to say.
😂😂😂 Brads face when he realizes what's going on here! 🤣😂
A MASSIVE hit that was all over the radio & MTV (when they played videos), and it was an entire song about being so bored that masturbation wasn’t even fun anymore. Lol
This is usually played in combo with another song of theirs "Welcome to paradise " , it's pretty deece too.
This is early Green Day. I was in 10th grade and obsessed with the whole album as well as their other albums from the time.
"stop or you'll go blind" is an old wive's tale. It was also referenced in the 80s song "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper. Another one is that you'll get hairy palms.
When I used to live with my gran in my teens, if I ever spent more than a minute in the bathroom she'd knock the door in passing and say in her wee Scottish voice 'Yerl gae blind'
The beginning of the song he mentions flipping through the tv channels. I always thought the “some say quit or I’ll go blind” was a reference to all the parents that would say sitting too close to the tv would make you blind. My parents used to tell me that when I was little.
You've seriously never heard that "You'll go blind" thing? It's a cliche many, maybe most of us have never been personally told, still, it's been "out there" forever. And yes, we're all "guilty" or at least prone, beginning in our teens. Best of luck, boys.
You gotta admit, it may not be the most complex tune ever, but you know what? It sure as hell is catchy (especially that bass line). I remember when this album came, out I had this song stuck in my head for weeks.
One of the first songs I learned on bass
Lol was waiting for this i feel like getting a karaoke machine lol
Nah, get some friends who can play a bit. I'm more of a guitarist but it's fun to get drunk and grab the mic on a jam.
old green day is so good especially this album
Back when I was a kid, the 70s, we were told that if you do that you'll go blind (or get hairy palms). It's a common thing for people my age, and older to have heard.
This song goes HARD AF live.
Lucky enough to of seen Green Day 3x in their mid to late 90s prime and good lord 🤌🏻
Still incredible live to this day
What a classic from 1992 and the words to this banger are GREAT. Lead singer of Green Day Billie Joe Armstrong along with the group tells it like it is that's why I admire their music. Trying to make an outlet seem dirty or feel guilty in the long run is more detrimental than facing the truth. A real winner by Green Day is the album American Idiot, a lot to say there.
It's from 94. 92 was the album kerplunk.
Green Days Dookie all sounded like this and it was glorious.
The "bite my lip and close my eyes..." line is a masturbation reference. I saw them back in the day, and they put on quite a SHOW!
This was from Green Days third album. This vaulted them into the mainstream. Their later albums from the 2000s are probably what yall are used to when they went a little pop punk.
Brad, punk rock is easy to play for the most part. Power chords and fast riffs. The song is also pretty nasty lol. Watch the video, too.
You aren't very familiar with punk if you think it's just power chords played fast. There are bands like that (The Ramones, Sex Pistols for example), but that's mostly just the stereotype.
@@johnjr757 You are even less familiar with punk if you think The Ramones are a punk band 🤣🤣🤣 Never were a punk band, they were a pure rock n roll band, THEIR description not mine. They were a major INSPIRATION for punk true, but punk is entirely the baby of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood born in Soho, London in 1976. The Sex Pistols were the FIRST band ever to be described as punk, by the Daily Mail actually, and the genre started THERE.
This is from their album called Dookie. You can listen to this album all the way through and every song is gold. This is my most listened to album of all time. Thousands of plays as a kid and its still good today
Hitchin a ride is my favourite greenday song ..!!!! Definitely worth a listen
I've "discovered" a lot of bands over the years b4 anyone's heard of them (GnR, Black Keys, Kings of Leon, etc.). Dookie was the only album that I LITERALLY walked into my bar, held up the CD, and like a town crier, loudly proclaimed "THESE GUYS ARE GOING TO BE HUGE!"
Longview has been my state of existence for a while now 😂
You gotta listen to "SHE" .......my favorite Green Day song.......especially if you need energy.........Welcome to Paradise is close second!
I remember buying this blue cassette tape as a freshman in high school when it came out. I miss these raw California punk days if the early to mid 90’s
Yeahhhhhh! This is the real Green Day. This whole album!
Yes, the two common “myths” about masturbation are you’ll grow hairy palms or you’ll go blind. They probably don’t say it much these days, but that was a thing 40-50 years ago. Alanis Morissette also references it in her song “Forgiven”
