The political background at the time of this song was the Iraq war, which I think impacted on some of the lyrics.
NOTHING HAS CHANGED... muricans still believe what their media say is THE TRUTH. Why? "We're the good ones, why they would lie??"
As a Brit growing up during the rise of punk and loving it. I can 100% tell you that punk is anti establishment in every way.
Except these guys were all for the jab. That’s not very punk
@@ronbecker7939 Yeah it's much cooler to just let disease roam free.
I'm 63 years old and have been a fan of these kids since Dookie after hearing my kids rocking out to it. I think GD hold the rare distinction of blending pop and punk in such a way that young and old alike can appreciate it. Oh, I actually can't think of a bad song from these guy's in general. Nicely done!
You're a treasure, Sir. 42 here and been fan since Dookie as well lol :)
Every cut on that album is fantastic. "Jesus of Suburbia" esp.
This album and MCR's Black Parade, I play from start to finish. Every time. And usually both albums back to back. Esp on road trips, jamming.
My first punk experience was in 79, at 17. But Green Day and MCR are my main go-tos in this vibe. All these years later.
Haters and racists don't like being called out on it publicly, then or now.
That is not applicable because Green Day doesn't point those things out anymore. They are on the side of the Hateful and racist now. They openly vote Democrat and shill for Joe Biden.
It doesn't get more hateful or racist than that.

The video for "wake me up when September ends" is a classic
The video has nothing to do with what the song is about.
Listen to the entire album in order. It's basically a rock opera. It's powerful. I love it. One of my all time favorites.
Dang, that title "American Idiot", rings true today, more than ever before.
It sure does. And ain't that just sad.
Rings pretty true for the whole damn world, if you stop to think about it
"Don't want to be a part of a MAGA agenda"
It fits better now then it did then and still rocks!!!
This song is even more relevant today. Green Day used their performance on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on Sunday night to make the ABC special’s audience aware of their political views.
During a performance of the group’s 2004 hit “American Idiot,” initially written during George W. Bush’s presidency about the Iraq war, frontman Billie Joe Armstrong changed the lyrics from, “I’m not part of a redneck agenda” to “I’m not part of the MAGA agenda.”
Ya hes an establishment shill now

Hard to believe I saw them 30 yrs ago at Woodstock II. These boys bring it!!!!
Dookie album by Green Day and Smash by Offspring were huge in 90s, when I was in high school in Poland. My fav song to this day is When I Come Around. Check it out.
@bars & barbells - Weird Al did a parody of this song.. "Canadian Idiot" - no joke. give that a listen too! lol
If they're too young to know Bob and Doug McKenzie, google them before watching "Canadian Idiot."
I actually made the same suggestion. I'm actually kinda curious how they'd react to that, being that they're Canadians
I'm from the East Bay Area, so are these guys...love them since Gilman St. Hung with them a lot!...Punk is not a phase, its a lifestyle
American Idiot was my high school album. It definitely had a huge impact on my life.
My guilty pleasure Greenday song, along with Holiday.
The entire album
American idiot
Is is a concept album
It was also a broadway play
Hey, Phil and Sam, in regards to other Green Day songs that you should react to, here's a few that I'd recommend:
When I Come Around
21 Guns
Basketcase
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Time Of Your Life
Time of your life would throw them for a loop.
@@matthewdrake4385 as would "When I Come Around" seeing as both songs are amongst their earlier material
Great concept album in age when thought those were dead. Punk concept album, very cool. Thanks for reaction!
This was the biggest album on the planet. Like Kiss in the 70s. It was everywhere. I have no idea how youve never heard it before.
Always respect for Green Day!
I never saw that video before but that was great high energy rock/punk. Good reactor analysis also.
♥ Green Day! You gotta do their songs: Longview, Basket Case & Geek Stink Breath
I think the song I decided GreenDay is way more than I ever thought was when I heard Jesus of Suburbia for the first time.
However, if you do another reaction to them I would honestly also love it if you did "Forever Now" since that is a song that I think is really underappreciated by them (because it was past their prime) and because of that there are very few reactions to it on UA-cam as well
Worth checking out the entire album!! "Jesus of Suburbia" is epic.
This song has been my wife's ring tone since I've ever knew her and she keeps her phone ring on full blast which means I fucking love and hate this song in the same time 😅
This song is timeless, no matter when you hear it, it is the state of the USA.
Start with the Ramones for punk
To late 😆
The Clash is another example for Punk Rock too
@@karlsmith2570 I liked them too but they went mainstream but I love the early music
Ludwig Von 88, Béruriers Noirs, French well known in Europe in the 80's
Sex Pistols
i used to have a 45 minute commute to work and this album timed out perfect,so i've heard it many many times driving down the freeway. one song flows into the next so it really should be heard as a whole. the last song "whats her name" is one of my favorites. this past new years eve they played it on "new years rockin' eve" and changed the line "i'm not a part of the redneck agenda" to "i'm not a part of the MAGA agenda" which ruffled a lot of trumpers feathers lol
Guys you are old enough to know this, but that era of let's say 2002-2008 was a punk pop era with some rock in it but mainly pop stars. if you actually lived in 2004, and I believe you did, you must know other songs just like that. Averil Levin is a main one, and there were others. It's the outcome of the sarcastic nu metal era of late 90s, from Offspring to Limp Buiscuit and system of a down. I mean unless you did not live in that era.. also there were serious new metal bands like slipnot and others. But the Punk pop wave came out of songs like stacies mom, who let the dogs out and so on. It's the funny ironic sobriety of Grunge in early to mid 90s and of course a direct decendent of alternative rock. but really guys.. you ask about this song, this album WAS their hit singles and career. This song for them is like Whish you were here for Pink Floyd. Another such band was of course Blink 182. But really? I mean didn't you guys live in this time?
Thanks, kids! This is a great song/statement... at least as relevant today (if not more so) as it was when they recorded it! I also recommend "Boulevard of Broken Dreams/Holiday"... (p.s. not quite "punk".. in the way that punk was in the mid-late 70's... but a fantastic and accessible version that captures the energy and anti-establishment statements - IMHO a better, more melodic message than some of the "true" punks of the day... lol)
They formed in the late 80s, but they didnt hit radio until the 90s. Basket Case, When I Come Around, Welcome to Paradise, Nice Guys Finish Last, Redundant are all worth a listen. They pretty much made pop-punk music pretty popular. I'll give you a heads up that the whole American Idiot album is done in the style of a rock opera, but the radio hits from the album are solid in their own right.
I’m from Scotland and I was 8 when this came out. I remember seeing the music video on tv and being mind blown 🤣🤣 I think my life was changed that day 🤣
I love this song. My favorite tune on this album is "Saint Jimmy". If you like Green Day, check out the band The Muffs.
This is one of my FAVS by them.....SUCH HIGH ENERGY!!! :) THANKS, YA'LL, for MAKIN' MY DAY!!! :) HUGS!
Man I love and miss Greenday! Brilliant dedicated musicians who are still on my Playlist. I recommend 21 Guns (Cast Version), it's SO SO good.
B&B haven't even checked 70's punk yet .Wouldn't that be wise before 90's punk pop?
yeah , i mean they think greenday are anti establishment LOL
they should listen to the clash maybe ?
@alteredoggy Yes for sure, even further back
The Stooges-Search & Destroy
The Ramones, Sex Pistols etc
Klasse ... Great
you should definitely do more greenday, i recommend revolution radio, bang bang, father of all and boulevard of broken dreams if you want to listen to more recent stuff
Hi.. Try to Listen to some simmilar stuff from here. 🤔.
,, Die toten Hosen - Sehnsucht(desire) "..
" Broilers-Ruby Light and dark, live Düsseldorf 2018"
"Jennifer Rostock - Tauben aus Porzellan". *greedings from north germany

The green would be red, imagine what that would look like.
I only know 2 of their songs and that was one of them lol. At the time this came out I was in a classic rock only era .
Thankfully grew out of my narrow minded music phase. Classic Rock will always be my favorite but I listen to a bit of most genre 😊
Green Day F***ing rock!!!
This is literally what you call pop punk. Pop punk was huge in the early 2000s and yes I had my phase back then as well but I still like Green Day today. I would suggest starting with Ramones for punk rock.
"Longview" one of their mid 90s MTV hits. The video is funny
Great reaction guys, love how the song generated a lively discussion between you! I do like what little I know of Green Day, the Offspring and the like but as a Brit who grew up with the UK Punk explosion in the late 70's it has largely lost the 'shock' value of the Sex Pistols, the Damned, The Clash etc. The presentation is more slick and 'manafactured' especially the videos, however, as you said, the messages still bear repeating because the big issues don't seem to change all that much! Cheers
Their critics said they sold out the punk rockers because they went so mainstream.
If you can....the Broadway Cast was so awesome doing these songs.....check out the original cast 21 Guns
I saw it 3 times...cried at all 3
I’m 54 and have been in my punk alternative phase since 1979 lol
Watch weird Al Yankovic’s “Canadian Idiot”. It’s his spin on this song.
"Know your enemy" next by Green Day please :)
Just react to every song from "Dookie" onwards, with lyric videos for songs that don't have an actual music video. There needs to be more reactions to Green Day outside of the newer or more popular stuff. I'd love to see people actually enjoy the evolution.
Award winning BROADWAY SHOW....PLEASE GIVE IT A COMPARISON
Next should be Jesus of Suburbia by green day
Nail on the head Sam and Phil. A lot of Americans controlled by the media these days
Back then we were realizing what we were seeing and hearing was not true.
In a country where everything was meant to be OK was not OK.
This whole album is really good. Green Day is sort of GAP punk but they definitely hit the social note the way punk is supposed to.
I have to admit I do like them.
Jesus of Suburbia is the Bohemian Rhapsody of punk rock
I thought I'd suggest anther new band to give a listen, if interested. "Little Feat - Spanish Moon (Official Music Video)" (by the channel: RHINO) --This song is from their live album called "Waiting For Columbus" released in 1978. The song was written and sung by guitarist Lowell George which was the creative powerhouse in the early years of Little Feat. This band released a total of 16 studio albums so there's plenty of their work to explore in future, if interested. peace out~
If u want a new genre to listen to, I'd suggest Il Divo. Adagio. Live in Barcelona
This song cuts even deeper today 😂
Which is a really depressing thought.
If your wondering why are they so loud for a 3-piece band, it's because there's a 3rd guitarist that travels with them. He s never shown in videos, but he's their kind of in the background on stage. I hope he's getting paid well.
Great reaction! It's not just about the Iraq War, the song's inspiration mainly came from America's reaction after 9-11. GD talked in interviews about how the media kept trying to scare us with color coded danger alerts, with blue, green, orange, red. GD (and many of us at the time) thought that was ridiculous and purposely trying to create unneeded fear across the nation. I praise GD along with SOAD at being the only 2 I know of that had the courage to speak out, bc you didn't or couldn't speak out about dumb gov decisions after 9-11, same as couldn't speak out truths during the pandemic.
Reading some of the comments, I'd say this song hit the ballseye. Ouch! Both then and no doubt now.
Hey Phil and Sam, Weird AL Yankovic does.a parody of this song that's titled "Canadian Idiot" it's pretty funny
Green Day has always had songs that were very political. This song came out during the time of the Iraq war.
Nice video, Green Day is definitely worth diving into. I recommend checking out Jesus of Suburbia live next..
You can react to Weird Al's "Canadian Idiot" parody of this, its funny, you may get the humor better than I!!!
Haha! Subtance.
Fuck yes Green Day!!! Oh sorry, hell yes! One of my all time fave bands and honestly theres not many songs that they've put out that I didn't like. Also I've never clicked on a video faster than when I saw it was yall doing Green Day. Green Day was always punk but then leaned more pop punk/skater music as time went on imo. This song is definately a timeless classic which will always apply in our world, now more than ever tbh. Love to see you guys check out more Green Day eventually as well, but greay job as always guys! ❤
imo, none of what they did after this album is anything to write home about. However, they had plenty of good stuff in the 90’s. I’d start there.
First time hearing this song and I believe they copied the chord structure from a 60’s song but I can’t remember its name or the group. Anybody help an old guy out?
Post modern punk
Green day was considered pop punk
There was a lot of bands from that era
They all started punk
Denae decided to make some money
To add if it hasn't been said already Punk is a music genre, but it is also a whole style in itself. Both are unconventional, even anti-establishment, politically charged in some cases. The music was of course in some places but also even down to the fashion sense of colored hair and clothes made from whatever the person thought was acceptable to them not society. Not to get preachy here on this because that is "Punk" but to get a grasp of the music of Punk there are many bands, I would say: The Ramones, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, the Damned, The Dead Boys, The Talking Heads, Patti Smith, Television, Richard Hell...let's be fair I can go on but there's a lot of choices to go down a rabbit hole of punk but that's a start in itself.
Please check out The Sex Pistols' '76 debut single Anarchy In The UK. We now have more access to misinformation.
The green paint running at the end of the video is symbolic with this flag doesn't run red it run like this country the color green as in cash. The whitewashed of flag is exactly what it means. If you're bothered by the lyrics and symbols you're probably the ones that they are referring to in the song. And that old adage of if it's popular it isn't punk is dead. The sea pistols, the Ramones and the clash are well known and popular and I dare anybody to say they weren't punk.
👍
They have another song that's called warnings That is where they read warnings off of labels and signs and put it to music.
The whole song is about how overarching political actors are a bad thing that the war on terror stifles the political spectrum of the US. This album wasnt one of the most popular albums of the 2000s because it was “mainstream” it was popular because it was a major challenge to the GWOT administration and especially songs like Holiday, at the time, were much more “in your face” to the political actors of the time
Government punk aka not punk.
Wait are u claiming you’ve never heard this song before? lol ok sure bud so u were living under a rock in 05? Got it
Notice the flag in the background of this video is a 48 Star US flag and not a 50 star US flag.
Yes, this song does have a reaction to Arianisum.
MAGA?
They talk about a certain type and I don't think it has any political sides, like telling you vote for Bush, It's just a fun song.
They are hard core lefties.
These guys always sounded like whiney little brats trying to sound like they have a valid opinion about politics and the state of the world in general !!! By the way the are not punk !
This song was released during the George W Bush administration and though it applies just as much today, was a critique of the Fox "News" conservative crowd. Also, if you are in a punk band and are not taking a poke at the establishment then you are not doing your job.
Hate the band ever since they started getting political! Never did like their music..................................stop listening/reacting to them, PLEASE!!
