  • 05/25/2016 A very long lived tornado that lasted an incredible 90 minutes occurred near Abilene to Chapman, KS along I70. This is our approach and close range intercept as it crossed over I70 and then we went past and intercepted it again just south of I70. It morphed into a huge wedge and very wide tornado as it crossed over I70 right in front of the chase vehicle. We experienced winds topping 100 mph! On the second intercept you can actually hear debris hitting the vehicle!

    You know it's getting real close when the inflow starts kicking into gear like it did around 5:00. It's crazy how few people understand that tornados almost always extend out beyond their visible funnels and how far out it can be when dealing with violent tornadoes like this.

    This footage is crazy!!!! Interesting how you’re sitting there filming as lots of traffic whizzes by, and you almost don’t notice that at some point there’s no traffic anymore in either direction. You’re actually inside that thing.

    I have driven past the debris field 2 miles west of Chapman on the south side many times and it still staggers the mind... the one that devasted Chapman just 6 years earlier caused me to stop by City Hall and make a donation to their tornado relief fund.
    You are always in the bullseye in central Kansas!
    Great video!

    It’s so crazy that from a distance tornadoes look kinda slow and graceful. Then you zoom it or it gets close then you realize the scale and the crazy sandblasting winds.

    I wonder about the people in the passing vehicles. Were some of them intentionally trying to get out of the tornado's path? Did some not even know or care that a tornado was nearby?

    • @tabortoothtiger7580
      @tabortoothtiger7580 6 років тому +1

      Oh, they most likely knew, but stopping and sitting in a car during a tornado isn't the best plan of action. At least find a stop and find a building to get into. Or get under an overpass. They probably just realized that it wasn't yet coming towards I70 and it was around the time that people were trying to get home from work, so that's probably what they were doing. Or they were chasers themselves.

      This being Kansas people were probably able to judge where and when it would cross the road. Notice that the traffic stops about a minute or two beforehand. Only these madlads were brave/ stupid enough to get this close.

    I mean, yeah, I have to say it was fascinating to watch only like a mile or two from your house, but knowing what happened to people's houses that my dad knows and is friends with. Pretty sucky. Winds so powerful that a stick went right through a tractor tire, which isn't an easy feat. They found their cows miles away from where they originally were and some of them had to be put down. My dad's friend got a stick through his hand. Thankfully it was the only injury out of the whole thing, but still. My dad said as he was standing outside, my neighborhood was close enough that they could actually see the debris getting sucked into it and being spit out. One house was literally just a floor by the time all was done. Talk about open floor plan. Good thing most people in Tornado Alley know to get some really good insurance in case of this type of stuff. Oh, and my dad's friend's brand new truck survived, while his wife's and son's cars were half way across the yard and his tractor was tipped over. Not even a little tiny scratch on the truck though. Just moved some sticks and leaves and bam, clean as a whistle. It was a pretty wild tornado for Abilene. We usually don't get them that close, at least not on that side.

      Yeah that one moved pretty slow. You wouldn't be that close to the El Reno tornado. Besides it being so big,and grew so fast, it was moving 50mph at times and the RFD that close to the El Reno was recorded at 150mph to possibly 200mph.
