  • I've finally gotten the opportunity to film my first tornado, an EF4 that narrowly missed the urban center of Chapman, KS on May 25, 2016. This tornado had wind speeds as high as 180 mph, was at times up to a half-mile in diameter, and cut a relatively short 26 mile path over a whopping 90-minute tour of Kansas.
I apologize for the shaky video during the drive; I'm not the steadiest cameraman while driving. Also, the tornado was rain-wrapped the entire time I was NOT driving, so there is hardly anything to watch as it passes a mile or less to the south of our position.
    Music Used:
"On the Ground" - Kevin MacLeod
    "Event Horizon" - Audionautix.com

Yes, great video! I'm astonished how 'invisible' this strong tornado is, one can only see it through the timelapse. Interesting, how close it is but the people in the street behave as if nothing is happening. You did very well waiting at the 'shelter' - always safety first!
I'm a bit jealeous as a guy from Germany who can not watch easily this absolutely fascinating phenomena. Keep up!

Very nice! I've seen tornadoes, but witnessing something of this magnitude must have been incredible.

Nice. We chased it from its birth, got ahead of it before it crossed I 70, and watched it as it was rain wrapped and passed Chapman. I think we even stopped in the parking lot of the Dollar General for a few minutes...the power appeared to be out at the time.

Hardly anything to watch my ass. I know you may have felt like you didn't capture much since we couldn't really "see" anything, but I think, of the 500+ tornado videos I've watched on UA-cam alone, this video is one of the absolute best.
It's just as important, if not more so, to look at what you CAN'T see when a monster is coming for you. Having to really strain and wonder what you were looking at, knowing something was in there but not what, or how big, and knowing that it could be coming to kill you, is something many people can learn from.
The sirens, the wind, the moments from 9:00-9:30 was just chilling. Absolutely chilling. And forget shakiness, you did a far better job with your "first" video than many "chasers" have done with their 500th.

very interesting and unique viewpoint of this tornado; i've watched dozens of videos covering this.
this thing veering southeast at the last few moments was really something else.

Chapman was very lucky. Had this tornado hit the town head-on, as it was initially projected to do, I imagine the severity and area of the damage would have been greater than the EF3 tornado that hit Chapman in 2008. I think this one was larger too.

here's the noaa report if you're interested: www.weather.gov/top/LongTrackTornadoHitsNorthCentralKS
this thing being on the ground for 90~ minutes is just disgusting.
anyway, great video. it offers a pretty distinct experience of this supercell -- not to be redundant.

+MrAnders0n2 Thanks fir the link, and once again for watching. I'm limited to my general area for storm chasing, but I hope to get more video soon during the atmospheric instability we've been experiencing.

more or less, with the total area measuring .86 miles while the tornado was half a mile (.50~) wide
