- The Kitty Hawk Tornado tore its way through rural Carroll County on May 27, 1995. This camcorder footage was shot by Kevin Tigges of Mount Carmel, IA.
I was in the basement of the Tigges' house with the 3 Tigges boys, my brother, and our cat, White Sox.
That is really spectacular footage. If you listen carefully, you can hear Reed screaming in the distance.
xyzct hahahahaha!
LOL!
🤣🤣🤣
Good one
I think Reed wasn't storm chasing in 1995
Commendable for that police officer to basically be the emergency siren for that town since they obviously had no city siren.
Not a single sound was heard except for the roar of the tornado, some frightened birds chirping, some sirens, and the occasional sound of this guy's steel balls clanking together. Holy shit.
That circulation is crazy! All those vortices look really evil.
That cop was chasing that tornado to cite it for speeding! Lol.
I know, I know, sorry but I hope that no one was hurt on this tornado or died. It's so very scary to see on video however in person it is much more adrenaline and scary. I have been thru a couple of tornadoes and it sure was scary. Tho I never was injured nor experienced damage from an actual tornado but I have had friends that have been victims to severe weather and it's nothing much on video unless you experience it in person. I have seen and been very close to tornadoes in in the past and it is so amazing on how powerful that they can actually be. I pray that anyone who ever comes into contact with tornadoes do not lose their lives to said storms and folks please take all warnings seriously. Sometimes they can just pop up out of nowhere or they can advance upon you faster than you can imagine. Please pray for all folks who have to deal with these storms around the world. May God keep everyone safe during these storms.
I remember that day clearly. I was outside taking pictures on our farm on 150th St between Ivy Ave and Jade. I remember the sirens and watching the pops of electricity as the tornado hit lines and boxes at each farm. I can't believe it's been that long..Thanks for sharing.
Wow!
Been 5 years so idk if you’ll see this but I remember being in a historical derecho back in 2012 when I was 12. I can’t believe it still feels like tomorrow but it was (about to be anyways) 10 years.
The 4 who disliked this video were tornadoes.
Now its 8 tornadoes
@@Anidawehi now 10.
@@ODessa002 Now 11.
@@nmulae this one, the April 2011 tornadoes, the Moore 99’ and 13’ monsters and the greensburg tornado disliked this
"You have no right to film us in public, sir."
I watch a lot of tornado videos and this is the best video I've seen yet. No yelling, screaming, or cars trying to outrun each other.
I agree! Totally different generation of people as this video proves. I like this generation a whole lot better than the millennial's for sure!!!! Two totally different mindsets.
Maybe REED TIMMER gets excited when he sees one! No need to hide who you're referring to.
TRUMP TORNADO ! No librats were harmed
Power flash! POWER FLASH! Power flash!!!! Power flash! (power flash) powerflash!!!!!
Yeah, so we heard.
power flash! power flash. power flash!!!!!
Great video. Thank you for finally posting. Been searching for a video of that tornado for years.
The vortices were absolutely insane. Unreal footage
It must be terrifying to see something like that barreling down on you and there's not a thing in the world you can do to stop it.
You can just get out of its way. For folks that just happen to be under it's spawning The speed & direction the stormcloud is moving, in this case Northeastern, anyone that is at least a 1/4 1/8 mile away north of it, that close one either should drive away towards the true west or true east and south so as the twister can be seen north of the escapee's sight or east of the western escapee's sight. A storm shelter would not hurt either, remember thou, depending on how quick anyone in harm's way is able to according to the Warning Awareness for immediate proximity.
EF5 the roar of this tornado is something else. Very powerful tornado. This tornado meant business. Great film.
It was an F4, the Enhanced Fujita Scale had not been commissioned yet.
Pretty nice for 1995 footage!!!
U can really hear the roar of it
Finally I can see what this was like my dad talks about it all the time because we live like 2 miles away
Pretty good for an average Joe without a tripod! The wind circulation at the ground is a lot more intense than most. That always signals a strong tornado.
Near the end of the film just before it goes near town, the tornado begins to look like an identical twin of the 1991 Andover Kansas tornado from the Duke Evans film! So cool.
I noticed that, too, with those ripple vortices coming up from the ground. Just like Andover.....what a beast!
Just like Andover and very similar to Tuscaloosa and Xenia. They all did the "dead man-walking" dance right before exploding too.
This tornado seemed to slow down, then speed up multiple times. Tornados are the scariest most unknown thing. We can never really know what they are going to do. Change direction, speed up, change in size rapidly, slow down, backtrack, multiple vortices, be rain wrapped. Its just scary, I commend the people brave enough to shake hands with these Monsters. I study them, but I know the risk involved in meeting these things in person, so Thank you for Sharing this footage.
Damn, I was born two months after this date. Seriously impressive video quality!
Amazing footage. One of the best I've seen.
One of the best tornado videos I've ever seen.
Wow! I hope you had an escape route.
Spectacular footage of that tornado! I definitely see the resemblance of the Andover tornado! Glad everyone was safe!
Incredible!😊💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙👍
Ausome video glad u guys r ok , white Sox for the cat I like it
Great footage. I appreciate listening to the sound of the tornado, the roar of the winds produced is scary, along with the sight of these storms. I don't think the sound is like a freight train, just terrifying wind.
Great footage!
Wow! Phenomenal footage from a camcorder! The ground speed is enormous. Looks like an EF-4 possibly 5! What did the NWS rate the Tornado. Hopefully it was out over the rural areas and no one was hurt.
F4
The best video of a tornado before tornado videos became cool... Didn't have all the screaming and constant zooming in and out we have today.
7:30 looks like a carousel from hell
I'm surprised more people haven't seen this.
Reminds me of the Andover tornado!
A lot going on with that tornado. What a sight to see.
When you see those swirls, that's when you know it's really cooking.
Where is kitty Hawk? I I'm from Canada where we rarely get tornadoes, maybe in the plains of Saskatchewan/ Manitoba. I like this video, no screaming/yelling. Props to you👊
North Carolina
it's a street near Mt. Carmel, Iowa, which is where this was filmed
Hey! Is there any way I could possibly contact you (like through email)? I would love to discuss getting permission to use this video in a video production if this is possible. Thanks!
That roar is quite something .
When it intensified it got scary looking. Violent multi vortex
It's Iowa alright. My wife is from Sac County.
It's not trying to make one, it already has, it's there!!!!
what the hell. . . this tornado was so powerful that it reversed the rotation of the earth and sent it back to 1977. This is proven when the police cruiser Crown Vic, 1977 model, went speeding by...
Hi! May I upscale this footage using AI and repost it with FULL credit to you?
I really miss 1995
Recommended gave me a good video?
Well done.
This is a very violent tornado extreme motion multi-vortex f-4 strength? What did it finally get rated at? At least f-3. It looks huge wedge
The Wikipedia page dedicated to this outbreak only has one tornado in Iowa listed on 5-27-95 and it was an F4 noted to have been in the counties just south of where this was shot. This has to be the same tornado.
@@tyryztoll If you look again at that Wiki page, there are actually 29 tornadoes listed for that day in Iowa, there just is only one detailed description of a tornado. There were three F4 tornadoes in Iowa that day, this one in Carroll CO (Mt. Carmel), one near Stuart (Adair CO I think) which is the one south of this video that you mentioned and see on the Wiki page, and another one somewhere else
Brividi😱😱😱😱
Great footage for 1995, the person filming had great refrain from the annoying yelling many chasers do.
LARGE TORNADO ON THE GROUND! VERY VIOLENT TORNADO! WOW DEBRIS!!!!! DEBRIS!!!!!!
Like, we get it. It’s right in front of us. I wish I could go back in time and punch the first person to say “large tornado on the ground!!” because nowadays it seems like people say it because of all the chase videos and think they’re supposed to? I dunno lol
I have a 8mm video camera ready to go if I ever cross one of these things! I would rather use that type of camera for the fact that it sounds much better for one. Another reason is they look so much more evil, vs digital cameras!
...Fear farts...
that developed rather fast
What town did it just miss? Great video!
Mt. Carmel
Robert Wynn still rated ef4 so it hit something
Where is Kitty Hawk ? NC. Possibly?
Which Kitty Hawk ? North Carolina?
Kitty Hawk, Iowa, where the Wright brothers first flew.
@@johnwriterpoet1783 Wright bros. flew in NC. No idea why this tornado is called Kitty Hawk, but it was definitely in Iowa.
It was in Mt. Carmel, Iowa. Kittyhawk Avenue is the name of a big road near there
F3?
I echo those sentments!!!!& Amen hope no farmers were hurt God bless them all from Tim!!!
Tornadoes interest me. They're very fascinating. But I don't want to go near one because there's a 100% chance I will die or less. Luckily, I don't have tornadoes where I live (they rarely happen. All we have are sand tornadoes which are COMPLETELY harmless but the sand tornadoes only happen in the desert part of my state so I'm good.) ;)
You mean dust devils?
9:00, looks like Andover Ks, 1991!
I cat named White Sox. Hilarious. 😂😂😂😂😂
Where’s kitty hawk ? South Carolina?
When was this storm? My wife and I went to outer banks for vacation a number of years ago
This is not the obx!! Must be a different kitty hawk
1995. It was in Iowa west of Des Moines. I've been researching why it's referred to as the Kitty Hawk tornado but have come up empty thus far.
@@tyryztoll I'm guessing it's because of Kittyhawk Avenue, a street east of Mt. Carmel, Iowa, that runs north and south through Carroll County
I imagine the people that filmed this tornado didn't realize when naming it the Kitty Hawk tornado, that a lot of people would assume it must have happened in North Carolina, where Kitty Hawk is much more famous for the name, rather than Kitty Hawk Avenue,, which is a street in a town located in Iowa, where this tornado happened
When you see a wedge coming get down low if your in a trailer run for your life!! Froggy
Big Thunder, Poke the tornado ! Go ahead & poke it. Just funnin with you
almost 26 year's ago
Its not trying to make one? This is a full grown Malty Vortex half mile wide Tornado with vortexes Spining of and on around. though suckers are dangeraus for one little sping decides to jump and nail the side of your house ripping the wall or roof of or both. Scary looking weather creature.
Malty Vortex! LOLOLOL
Mother Nature was angry that day :-(
+Pamela Hagedorn "she" is always angry.
In 1925, tornado ripped up railroad rails. Made pretzels out of them. 300 MPH could not possibly do that. No doubt tornados have wind speed of 500 MPH. Scientist' have no idea such power. So they invent damage scale.
David Vance there is no way tornadoes have wind speeds of 500 mph
You have no idea the power of a tornado. No idea. Your are the same as the goofy meteorologists. You people & your ridiculous EF-scale. That is the most stupid idea on gauging Tornadic wind speed. In Jarrell Tex. The tornado did things that stunned scientists from the world over. There is no instrument to measure Tornadic wind speed. Every one of them built. Have been destroyed. Jarrell Tornado- 5 automobiles never found. Shredded to bits. You people are the ones who don't know what they are talking about. El-reno Tornado flipped a 325 ton 3 times. Tore the steel casing out of the ground. You have no idea how powerful a tornado is. No idea whatsoever.
David Vance I do believe tornadoes are strong. Just curious what do you think the tornado wind speeds in Tuscaloosa were
Anyone else want to go up and pet it? It walked right up to you. Don’t be rude. Lonely tornado
