That is not how that works. Introversion is a fundamental part of your personality, your brain structure. You don't just "change" that. Especially in 1 month.

I had a really hard time communicating growing up. I never picked up on social cues and I didn’t naturally express any emotions, so I came off monotonous and out of sync. From middle school onwards I read books on public speaking, making friends, even leadership and management. Eventually I got a lot better, but it took years of trial and error to become someone that wasn’t a chore to interact with. All that being said, what you’re teaching is invaluable. It’s some of the cleanest, clearest advice I’ve ever seen on this subject. Too many others in this sphere overcomplicate things and turn their focus towards aspects of communication that are only incidentally important, but you simplify and strive to communicate the core principles with no fluff. Thanks for what you’re doing

    • @Headtalk

Any advice on avoiding overusing gestures? I generally struggle with overdoing it, or at least so I was told. It helps me stay focused and keep presentations more engaging, but I feel the need to do something with my hands when I'm not emphasizing a specific point so I just have "weak" and "strong" gestures instead of picking specific moments.

I do this thing where I touch the right front side of my forehead briefly and then push my hand and arm out when I'm talking about stuff that I just don't get about others that's frustrating me. It's hard to explain you kinda have to see it visually. Now I'm wondering if this makes people uncomfortable or if it's ever more powerful than being in the "power sphere"

I watched a lot of ASL growing up, and also dealt with a lot of friends and coworkers that came from different cultures, not speaking the best English. So gestures come very naturally to me, especially when my mind is racing faster than I can find the words. I also notice I opt for gestures/signs as I speak to clarify my tone/attitude. Sometimes words alone can be misinterpreted, and facial expressions in combination with gestures is a more effective form of communication. That is why deaf people are so expressive, it improves their ability to more accurately communicate. ASL is more than just signing, its facial expressions, body movements, and speed of motion. It’s very funny though, because I am definitely not fluent in ASL. I just had many friends with deaf parents, and tons of exposure. Sometimes deaf people get excited to see me gesture subconsciously to my baby, and quickly realize they were mistaken . 😂
It’s like an unconscious habit when I’m wanting clarity. It’s usually signs like IDK, sorry, write, done, okay, happy, beautiful, & etcetera… It’s very subtle that I don’t even notice it myself, until after the conversation ended, and I think… did I just sign to a hearing person that knows perfect English ??? Definitely not proper direct signing, but definitely recognizable enough, just more discrete or to the side. It’s like hesitant hands fighting with my mind as I speak. I notice if I see a friend dressed up beautifully for example, even if they don’t know ASL, I will have the habit of saying something like: “OKaaaayyyyy!!! Look at you, girl!” & subconsciously signing “beautiful!” with my head turned away as I make the gesture. It’s like my brain knows it’s strange to sign beautiful face to face with a hearing person, dividing the conversation with a large hand gesture, so without even thinking I turn my head slightly as I gesture it so it’s less aggressive. Then I think back… “Did I just do that???”, but nobody finds it unnatural, it’s very subtle within my movements or laughter, that nobody questions it besides deaf people that want to socialize & me. 😂
