well to be honest, I didn’t know this was going to be a problem because I’m not the most educated in tech. However, I noticed the issue as soon as I got it. It’s incredibly noticeable and I now know what it is because I searched the problem. For someone who performs most tasks in dark mode and dimmed environmental lighting, it’s a profound issue.
Awesome review! It’s great that you explained the concept of the LED vs OLED vs Mini LED technology. Also like the apples to apples screen test with traditional LED. Good stuff!
Older video I know but I just got a 12.9 and seriously considering returning it. I use my ipad mostly at night in bed and in those dark situations it starts to hurts my eyes to see the bloom around almost everything because it feels similar to like i'm looking at a perpetually blurry picture.
I think this is the best video I’ve watched so far on this subject and I have watched a lot. I have only had my 2021 for about a week now but love the display.
Yeh exactly, I mean it does happen even at 50% brightness but I just couldn’t get that to show on camera! It’s so hard filming these as what the camera sees and what our eyes see are so different!
If I never used the ipad I would agree but even at low brightness it’s a thing. Don’t let anyone tell you different. Not a bad vid though, liked that he just honestly stated that mini-led inherently has the problem. What he didn’t add though, is that apple was more lenient with product due to COVID, so literally certain screens are better than others, I can personally attest to this
I still see it when brightness is low. Idk why they have to have brighteness that high that’s straight up stupid!. I’m glad to understand it a little bit more about how and why its happening but for someone who watches content more so than productivity such as photography or LumaFusion can get very annoying to see those LED still on around a white object. I have found is not even white txt that it shows. Even the Sony logo right before a movie “Fatherhood” on Netflix begins to turn on, showing the lcd look before and i mean in big letters BEFORE the actual Sony image appears. Only in dark rooms though it’s very noticeable. It’s just very very very annoying to see this LED turn on “showing the LCD look like the guy in the video displayed” around an image and the rest is pitch black. It don’t look bad, but when its there. It’s a reminder I should have just stuck with my 2020 iPad. Honestly would prefer LCD than this mini LED or just make it OLED. If you a content only person. I wouldn’t recommend, since it’s annoying and you’d save a lot of money. To just go with a cheaper iPad since you don’t use any power hungry apps or go with OLED display tablets offered from samsung As for me. Although it’s annoying. I love iPad. I love the pencil. Loving the battery efficient better on this one. More ram more layers for drawing. Maybe overkill but at the end of the day it was my decision and at the end of the other days the nonreturnable text made the decision for me to keep it 😂
No issue at all, and I like to keep my brightness below half even during the day (my eyes feel more comfortable) let alone to maximum in pitch black room. It would kill my eyes and give me a headache, blooming or not
I put it at full brightness for the camera and video but this issue is noticeable even at 50% but if you dont work in the dark, honestly its not that bad as I said in the video, I wouldn’t return the iPad Pro for this reason
It’s the same thing, unfortunately its hard to show on camera, even the images you see online is completely overblown because camera sensors see differently to our eyes, honestly its not an issue as I said in the video its really over blown in the media, I would take this display over an LCD any day
recently, i notice "blooming" related problem when i watch Dune 2021 on superamoled display, because the local dimming zone is not small enough, some of the scene with planet with pitch black background, the area where the grey area(light from the planet) and pitch black area looks extremely pixelated, and this look way worse when the video moves upward to show the full planet. i thought the movie was corrupted but i played the same video on macbook lcd and it was fine! minus the greyish black
Professional users, With these two iPads (disregarding size) 12.9” m1 iPad vs 11” m1 iPad Which screen is better suited for color accuracy? (For Graphic design/photography/video editing.) the darks are darker on the mini led, but I know oleds suffer from saturation issues (yes i know mini led is technically lcd). I’ve been using the retina lcd screens for a while now, but afraid to add mini led to my set up if it isn’t as color accurate.
I did prefer the smaller version but now more happy with 12inch. Just hate when I'm playing a video and open a new tab page and the noise stops; have to re click to play.
hi i have a question khamun, that as you showed the difference between the ipad pro 12.9 and macbook air, the same difference would be there between ipad pro 12.9 and ipad pro 11 inches?
Good video Its the bloomin nature of the beast. With led the whole screen blooms and with mini led the bloomin is just around the bright objects. Just saw the 12.9 display at the Store and it looks bloomin marvelous .
Making excuses for trash ,I kept holding it up to my 2020 pro and my Samsung s7+ it’s “brightness “ isn’t worth the bloom, it’s just awful, I turned on all the lights and cranked the brightness down and I still see it every where. Funny thing is I didn’t see it when I was looking at the display model. And if you understand how many strides they have made in pled technology you wouldn’t be too concerned about burn in I have a few Oled screens and not a single one of them over 3 yrs. Of constant use has had a burn in issue. Leave it to Apple to put a tester screen on the market for for more than Sonys A80j 55in tv which is just a supreme TV. I’m keeping my 2020 ipad and upgrading my TV instead.
I received a 12.9 2021 ipad pro yesterday morning.. yes i have the blooming effect.. but okay for most of my use cases.. no one always is going to use it as 100% brigtness. I am okay with it.. specially for HDR contents this tech is awesome
The truth is, I’ve never complained / thought about my iPad’s screen quality until this iPad. I’m returning mine. The Mini LEDs are more trouble than they’re worth. I’d suggest anyone who is on the fence about it to return theirs as well if they are not 100% satisfied.
I have an observation, when you switch on the iPad, the apple Logo doesn’t bloom the same way everything else does. So technically apple should be able to correct it no?
I used to think Apple was all about quality that they perfected the tech before introducing it but they are proving me wrong again and again. Such a shame this Ipad's screen turned out to be like this. Like the issue is quite obvious and Apple's team still incorporated the mini-led display despite know that issue before they fixed it. I bought it and really regret it because my main usage is media consumption especially at night and this screen sucks because of that blooming issue and some days ago it started showing lines on left side of the display so I have to send it to Apple to fix it. Disappointed
I have an Apple rep, its not a broken screen. You are wrong, and the Apple person you spoke to doesnt understand the tech behind MiniLED. This is how this tech works. Look at the Creator laptop with MiniLED.
But you need to be watching a black video with third lines or text, in a dark room with full brightness on to see it, or is noticeable in normal use? That’s the key, as i think, anybody will be using it in a dark room with full brightness. Please, let me know. Nice video, BTW
It happened at 50% brightness too but it was hard to get that on camera even though my eyes could see it! UA-camr problems haha I barely even remember about it when I’m using it during the day but when I’m writing at night in dark mode I can see it but its not distracting. For me I think a lot of people are making this into such a big problem, its the nature of this tech, its like OLED, after a few years of OLED you get burn in and loss in colour which makes it useless long term for colour work like video and photo editing but miniLED can be used for years and years, you might just have to deal with blooming in certain situations
@Tweed Penguin don’t know if it was my model but I noticed it one afternoon, in sun slight so I returned mine because I thought it might be defective lol.
It’s mainly in the dark to be honest at any brightness from my uses, but its really not worth people worrying or making a bit deal from, I would take this over an LCD display
@@Techkhamun I agree with you i love the look of the new screen quality Just wish I had my iPad already but I won’t get until end of June so I’m learning all I can on it from great techs like you and others
But this blooming effect is completely negligible . The positives are more than 99.9% in this new ipad pro M1 than worrying about the 0.1% small microscopic things . One needs to understand, Nothing is 100% perfect in this world and move on with it.
Hi great show thanks. But listen there is no issues with blooming on the new M1 iPad Pro 5th gen at all. My iPhone has blooming, my laptop has blooming and my tv has blooming. I don’t hear the bombs dropping on those devices…, hmmmm…., buy the new M1 iPad Pro 5th gen 12.9” or don’t but if you do you won’t be disappointed. I have mine now for a few days now, and it’s awesome!!!! And if you are put out by a little glow you need to head to a alternate universe where perfection is the order of the day. Cheers. 🤓😉
The blooming doesn’t bother me at all but i feel like there’s a huge gap between the panel and the glass like the cheaper iPads compared to my 11’ 2020
I was looking for an elaborate test and comparison like this, thank you!

Thank you. Great video. It’s good to know my unit is not defective. Some people say some stuff like they don’t see it at all.
Glad it helped!
I have the iPad and its not issue
I think another “fix” is to not be an extremist and using full brightness in notes 😂. Let auto brightness to what it does best. Subcribbbeddd

I’m curious about the cost gap between mini-LED and OLED ? Why ipad pro doesn’t use OLED ?
Burn in issues on OLED, not good for long term use
Ok but can you show the blooming effect in the dark room with brightness on nomrkal level not 100?

The 12.9 m1 iPad is the best tablet for artists, film editors and photographers.
Would be interesting to see same test in lit environment and also while looking at screen straight rather than from a n angle.

Who is watching his IPad with full britness in a dark room in real life?
Me lol
I was wondering the same. No one is going to be doing this realistically
That's not the point.. Oled doesn't do it.. And the iPhone uses which?
I will get my Ipad in few days. If I don't use dark mode, will I still see the blolming?
no
Thanks for the good explanation.
Very helpful! Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Is this because the local dimming zone is not small enough?
Micro-led should solve this blooming issue.
Yeh exactly, and microLED is many many years away
I mean how many hour of the day you gonna use your I-pad in the dark area? the mini LED is way better than the IPS LCD for overall daily use.
Anyway we are not going to use the iPad in complete dark room with full brightness!! Show that ideal use as test
Superb, like see any one OLED also on side for this comparison, anyway 👍
Excellent... explanation.. great and thanks bro

Keep it, its really not a big deal, and has no effect of longevity.
No, you must immediately throw it out the window since it blooms. At this point you bought a non functioning pane of glass.
cooooool.
