    This really helped me understand what's going on in the song, thank you. Now I'm looking to see the exact voicings and rhythm from the recording.

    Wonderful. First tune I learnt and loved to play, and one of the most beautiful Jazz pieces. Always struggled with improv on it - many thanks for the ideas!

      Dear Rob, That's great! The 30-Day Jazz Musician Course might be a perfect fit for you, and it will give you the tools to play many jazz standards. We offer a 5-Day Test Drive just to be sure, but if you can play this already you are probably the right fit for this approach.

    I think the rhythm is different to the recording?

    • @contemporaryschoolofpiano
      @contemporaryschoolofpiano  Рік тому

      Yes. I made some subtle changes to the groove for the sake of breaking down the chords in a more accessible way for people. Well picked up!

      Not subtle to a drummer’s ear :) Awesome video! I’m stuck when you get to the improv - You’re playing is great 👍

    I like the part where you say quite humbly...Well, we're going to have to strip this cord down because it's got too many notes to allow you to improvise with your right hand!!! And you reduce it to 3 notes!!! I was laughing on that part quite a bit. I had arrived to a 4 note version of the first chord, and it sounded probably a little bit better than yours. You know, whenever I see a SUS chord in sheet music, I never know if they mean the Sus 2 or the sus 4 version. I've kind of defaulted to the SUS 4 version because it sounds so good comparatively. Bill Evans was such a genius on stripping a chord down to even 2 notes and it sounded brilliant when he did that. It really taught me a lot about playing chords. We don't have to play all 4 notes of a chord. It helped my playing once I realized that. I wish I had the money to take your course, but watching videos doesn't do it for me. I need a live teacher to show me.

    Well done sir, however the “iconic rhythm” is demonstrated incorrectly. It would be good for all your fans to hear that rhythm played correctly. please consider correcting the rhythm in the second measure of the comp pattern. It really does make a difference. Space being the key word here

      Yes, it's a modified rhythm and that is intentional. I’ve made a conscious decision to modify the rhythm of 'Maiden Voyage' to make it more accessible for our members. While the original version from Herbie Hancock’s first recording of this piece uses further syncopation. Herbie himself has explored this piece in various ways throughout his illustrious career, including some very expansive interpretations for solo piano. In jazz, unlike the fixed compositions of classical music such as a Mozart Sonata, there isn’t just one definitive way to play a piece. Which I understand can be at odds when we are attached to certain pieces and ways of playing them, and for good reason too, the original piece is a masterwork in the jazz rep, so it wasn't an easy decision but I put the pedagogy first in this case - and that's is what I often do in my approach to teaching, as it makes the music more universally accessible to students who are starting out, which is something I am very passionate about. Hope that makes sense!

    These are not the correct voicings, Herbie plays g-b-c-e/d so there is the half step tension, like a Bill Evans chord.

      Yes, I am aware of the voicing in the original recording. However, it's essential to note that this work is primarily an educational tutorial, not an attempt to duplicate the original version in its entirety. My focus lies in delivering the fundamental chord framework for learners, which I believe offers a more profound insight into harmony's intricate concepts. This pedagogical approach, in my view, facilitates a more substantial comprehension and exploration of music theory.
