Herbie Hancock - Maiden Voyage
Watch the full legendary concert with Herbie Hancock, Joe Zawinul and Friedrich Gulda: • Joe Zawinul - Requiem ...
Brilliant inro into this hypnotic melody. He's a true master.
April 12: Happy birthday Musician-pianist-band leader Herbie Hancock; Grammy Award: Album of the Year; Kennedy Center Honors. Thank you and God bless. Thanks for the upload, LOFTmusic. Blessings
Funny how jazz snobs were thinking Herbie lost his soul with all his funk/disco albums. The guy never lost it and even his electronic period is getting more and more relevant over the years.
You're absolutely correct, Herbie and Roy Ayers are considered by the millenial lions (Glasper, Kamasi, Daddy Dave, the Roots crew, etc. as Don DaDa's
he didn t lost his soul, he evolved and did great music all along his career, i think he 's one of the truly great genius in the second part of 20th century, but we obviously can hear the influence of rachmaninov on his playing and composing decreased a lot over time, and as a true fan of rach i can understand what shoking or disapointing it could have sound to "elder ears", even if i prefer head hunters ^^
Amen
I have to like these comments for the algorithm boost.
People like to rate dead people. Herbie has his ego at the back, and ever since I listened to his Flood album, I instantly knew he is a genius. Now his music is increasingly showing levels that the other jazz masters should bow down to. I can never get Herbie's music wrong, his electronic /funk/fantasy music olays make me feel better than I can describe, better than any jazz album can make me feel yet I have listened to a lot of traditional jazz
Deeply influenced by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, and Igor Strawinsky. One of my all time favorite jazz pianists.
He was like 49 or something like that... Still fairly young!
Herbie Hancock is the musician of a lost island.
It is an absolutely unprecedented performance and it sounds......how should I put it? maybe modal? Those colorful notes sound familiar and remind me of Ravel. Unfortunately, I can only figure out some modes as simple as lydian and phrygian playing in the middle.
@Johnny G The modal soul, he is.
Anyone knows what's Herbie's glasses model?
I just saw Frank Buckley interviewing Herbie. Frank asked him if he had a favorite song to play. Herbie said he doesn't really think that way, but if he had to pick one, it would be this one. Interview: ua-cam.com/video/ElhlWyUIDIU/v-deo.html
I know a lot of you like his funk music which is not my cup of tea and that s ok this is just powerful and first rate
yo why would you put an ad literally in the middle of the song smdh
Sounds very Keith Jaredy
Who the fuck is Keith Jaredy!!
That mine PAPA DOC you knows about it ?
Microbiote
the intro sounds like it was built out of Ravel's Gaspard de la Nuit. Specifically Le Gibet
Good ear. I thought so too.
Jimmy Nguyen I think it sounds more like scarbo in the intro
Herbie is a big Ravel fan and if you listen to his opus of work, you'll hear lots of bits and ends of Ravel!
I agree
In case you haven't heard it, there is a recording of Herbie playing Ravel's G Major concerto 2nd movement. Spoiler alert: he improvs with the orchestra playing... It's quite something... Definitely recommend to have a listen at it!
Jeez that intro... he's one of the best improvisors to ever play...
yo whatup 8-bit big band good to see you here
21st century picasso.makes me appreciate being alive to witness such beauty and artistry!
Seems that there are at least 13 people on the planet who do not know how to appreciate genius
47 now :(

This is my favorite version of one of my favorite songs. Beauty and truth in music.
Not just amazing skill, but he 'raises the bar' by putting his soul into all his playing. Unfortunately, lyrics have overtaken the market of music nowadays. The art of music and the sound of instruments 'speaking' is not as popular as it should be.
Elias Antonas Yup. Couldnt have said it better myself. There are so many gimmicks that take the spot light in modern music over what matters the most. And that even goes for the more underground "unconventional" music as well unfortunately.
yes...thanks, Mike.
THe instrument till speak verry loudly and with allot of controll.
If you know your stuff you know that the real issue is that evrything is mastered and made to sound good on terrible speakers.
Ah, the "golden age of music" fallacy guaranteed to make its way onto every UA-cam comments section from someone long in the tooth. Don't judge modern music by what you hear on the radio. Music today has blossomed into so many genres that scratch any itch you could possibly have.
Then why are so many people itchin' ?
I love how in the beginning and for a short time in the middle, Herbie takes a second to think over everything he's going to play.
MASTERFUL! One of my favorite jazz songs for all time.
Maiden Voyage used to be the intro to the Billy Taylor Show on WRVR at 4:00 on Weekdays. I first heard it at 12, and saved up money to buy the album. My first one. This version is transcendent.
The influence of 20th Century classical music on Herbie has been profound. Great stuff.
More like Herbie playing with new toys.....
I think Zawinul actual displayed that more in his ideas than Herbie.
His music fills me with anticipation. So uplifting for the soul. He is the master!
What a great time to be alive and to be able to appreciate his genius!
5:58 the lick, but genious
Magnífico, pura sensibilidade e emoção nos dedilhar poético da música instrumental.
Simplismente magistralmente incrível.
Tocou meu coração e ouvidos também!
What spirit, what feeling, what transcendent mastery.... Bravo, Herbie.
how does he look younger now than he did almost 30 years ago
Could be the mustache. He's aged amazingly well, though. I saw him last year and he had surprisingly lively stage presence considering he's in his 70s! The performance itself was expectedly awesome.
@@afonsosousa2684 hehehe ! He is more in is 80s now :)
From 1:34 to 2:15 it reminds me of "Maracatu" by Egberto Gismonti.
the MASTRO ...
Undoubtly one of the greatest performances in the history of music. Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen.
The absolute master of harmony
There is a
fantastic version by Hancock, Buster Williams on bass and Al Foster on drums
that I can’t find any more in youtube. Somebody got the link, please?
what a remarkable musician, maybe my favorite of all time.
Woops this isnt sea of thieves
Lol I was looking for the same
Magnifique Merci Herbie
I have listened to this performance at least 5 times I think I'm a fan
Herbie and Bosendorfer...pure piano love
33 people disliked this , crazy.
That is one bright Bosendorfer, maybe the sound engineer turned up the tremble on it.
Hey Herbie,
You sound great on Bosendorfer. I like Fazioli as well, but you sing on these things amigo.
==BOZE==
How I find these track in Spotify?
Search for the albun "Dedication". It is not this version but is also very good
Ravel-like harmony in the beginning, brilliant!
there are times when it doesnt sound right or dissonant, but then an eargasmic melody and harmony comes in... then it goes away again...
I don't think you understand the context of what he is playing and how it fits together...
That was Britain's preparation in my SON Car Accident...? She Has a Grand Son to ,to make her fill what I Fill at distime before getting 100 for centery....May =Maiden 25 May 1925....Archaie & Poetic,?
Wish this was on spotify, only Herbie could have played it like this
While not this version, there is the VSOP (1977) album which is on Spotify. It has the piano intro and the actual Maiden Voyage tune separated. Apart from that and a little bit of that 70's veneer on the piano sound, it's just like this: Herbie all the way.
Hi ! thanks for this video , is it possible to take 3 first minutes of this video on my own video if i give sources ? i'm beguinner about laws on internet ?
Maiden Voyage by way of Debussy...
Classic!

Does Herbie Hancock age?
CLASSIC.
Breathtaking.
Grandissimo cuore

Bravo
Un dio che suona il pianoforte
Leandro: Hai ragione, signore!!!!
Lindo !
This is something else...
What do you mean?
LOFTmusic so good
Impressionism, Ravel "Le Gibet", some Debussy too....
I can clearly feel the influence of chick corea on this piece. I love how jazz legends of the same age have such a force over each other
the lick at 5:59
thats why theres a part of the melody that seems a little bit like the lick as well
Ryszard Jezierski not really
Beautiful
Much prefer Kenny Barron's version.
