Funny how jazz snobs were thinking Herbie lost his soul with all his funk/disco albums. The guy never lost it and even his electronic period is getting more and more relevant over the years.

You're absolutely correct, Herbie and Roy Ayers are considered by the millenial lions (Glasper, Kamasi, Daddy Dave, the Roots crew, etc. as Don DaDa's

he didn t lost his soul, he evolved and did great music all along his career, i think he 's one of the truly great genius in the second part of 20th century, but we obviously can hear the influence of rachmaninov on his playing and composing decreased a lot over time, and as a true fan of rach i can understand what shoking or disapointing it could have sound to "elder ears", even if i prefer head hunters ^^

People like to rate dead people. Herbie has his ego at the back, and ever since I listened to his Flood album, I instantly knew he is a genius. Now his music is increasingly showing levels that the other jazz masters should bow down to. I can never get Herbie's music wrong, his electronic /funk/fantasy music olays make me feel better than I can describe, better than any jazz album can make me feel yet I have listened to a lot of traditional jazz

It is an absolutely unprecedented performance and it sounds......how should I put it? maybe modal? Those colorful notes sound familiar and remind me of Ravel. Unfortunately, I can only figure out some modes as simple as lydian and phrygian playing in the middle.

I just saw Frank Buckley interviewing Herbie. Frank asked him if he had a favorite song to play. Herbie said he doesn't really think that way, but if he had to pick one, it would be this one. Interview: ua-cam.com/video/ElhlWyUIDIU/v-deo.html

Not just amazing skill, but he 'raises the bar' by putting his soul into all his playing. Unfortunately, lyrics have overtaken the market of music nowadays. The art of music and the sound of instruments 'speaking' is not as popular as it should be.

Elias Antonas Yup. Couldnt have said it better myself. There are so many gimmicks that take the spot light in modern music over what matters the most. And that even goes for the more underground "unconventional" music as well unfortunately.

If you know your stuff you know that the real issue is that evrything is mastered and made to sound good on terrible speakers.

Ah, the "golden age of music" fallacy guaranteed to make its way onto every UA-cam comments section from someone long in the tooth. Don't judge modern music by what you hear on the radio. Music today has blossomed into so many genres that scratch any itch you could possibly have.

While not this version, there is the VSOP (1977) album which is on Spotify. It has the piano intro and the actual Maiden Voyage tune separated. Apart from that and a little bit of that 70's veneer on the piano sound, it's just like this: Herbie all the way.
