I don't know if you remember, but almost two years ago I emailed you asking if I could ask you some questions for my senior project in high school, where I was required to interview someone in a profession of my choosing. I chose UA-camr, and I was so sure it would be extremely hard to find someone willing to take the time to answer my questions. You were one of my favorite content creators, and I figured I might as well email you first, fully prepared to not get an answer and move on to other smaller creators to try my luck with. I couldn't believe it when I looked at my phone and saw that you not only responded to me, but answered all of my questions with very in-depth, thought-out responses. To me, you were this awesome, distant figure who had way more important stuff to be doing than answering some random kid's questions for a school project, and it meant so much to me that you went out of your way to help me. I love how it parallels what you described here-you were my MatPat, and your willingness to help me let me appreciate you as a person, rather than just as a UA-camr.

I have someone who met him by off chance at a convention back in 2019, he was just doing his stuff, i think he was getting ready to leave, he asked for a autograph, Matpat said sure and they talked for bit, friend gave a theory about some movie he had watched and i kid you not, Matpat said "Oh thank god, not a FNAF idea, everyone wants FNAF lore, but no one wants to talk movies" gave him his theory (saying it was a good movie too) and then the iconic Line with his name and went on his merry way.

His Majoras Mask "Is Link Dead" and the Rosalinas parents theory is what actually really got me into lore as a whole! Those theorys (Mario is actually evil, Link is actually dead, Who are Rosalinas Parents, Dr. Wily wins) are ridiculous now imo after growing up and delving a little further into those franchises, but they sparked my interest in theories and lore nonetheless and it sparked HARD.
Hes the reason I love looking at stories with a bit more of a critical eye, why I like media that puts in an extra layer with deeper meaning, and how I eventually found youtubers like Zeltik and you :)

Both My First and all time favorite theory I saw from MatPat has to be his theory on Rosalina being Peach's daughter, I had only recently gotten into the Mario seires, and my first games were the galaxy Titles, seeing such a cool take on a game I loved so much already was so wonderful and nerdy in the cooles sense of the word possible.
I honestly teared up when he himself brought that video up as one of his favorite theories he has worked on in all his 13 years.
I always loved his vibe/attitude/everything about him all these years, and as much as it pains me to see him leave, god, all the videos/tweets/etc talking about how much Matt meant to everyone and in general how awesome he was to interact with any time is just plain wonderful.

I thought it was a cool video when I first started watching him all those years ago and I stand by that even today.

I've been watching MatPat's Minecraft theories since I first got on youtube and he's honestly shaped not only my opinions on the game itself but also been the inspiration behind countless of my ideas and creations. Even though I've mostly moved on from Minecraft, I still think that the impact he made on my perception of the game and the ideas he posited in his videos stuck with me and are still making a difference in my work today, whether that's for DnD, my music, my art, or really anything.
I'll miss him, yes, but more than anything I know that even if he himself won't be here as much, the influence he had on myself and people like me will remain as a legacy to his kindness and creativity. he worked so hard to plant a seed, and now, through the imagination of his viewers, the first sprouts begin to blossom. but hey, that's just a theory...A GAAAAAME THEORY.
thank you, matpat. it's been an epic journey, and I'm so glad to have been a part of it. see you soon.

It’s the classic difference between knowing facts and knowing people. Relationships are so much more than a sum of knowledge, and relationships can go infinitely deep because you’ll never finish probing that other person.
    Just - beautiful.
I loved game theory growing up. I got one of the first merch shirts - a lot of ‘theorist green’! With a pin, but I never had the guts to go to an event. I wonder if that old shirt still fits…
Regarding him, he played all his cards right and, in the end, achieved his aim to make learning fun. In the Goodbye Internet video, I loved how he talks about Steph as his best friend. The sincerity, the wisdom, and the age start shining through. He’s known and seen a lot. But life is short… and I don’t think life ends at death. (Speaking of, there are SO many eulogies here in the comments that I was confused because everyone was talking like he’d died earlier than anticipated!)
But, while he lives, I hope he’ll draw close to Jesus and God - not from a knowing-all-the-facts perspective, but a relationship-knowing perspective. I’ve always silently hoped it while I watched him, even before I got a UA-cam account - there’s too much grief in his eyes to bear it alone forever. I used to watch Ronnie’s videos with digressing and sidequesting… the despair or grief, it can’t be cured without hope in new life. But God cannot lie (Titus 1:2)… the Bible is a reliable collection* of historical documents written by eyewitnesses during the lifetime of other eyewitnesses. They report to us supernatural events that took place in fulfillment of specific prophecies** and claimed that their writings are divine rather than human in origin.
*(corroborated by like 40 different authors who lived on three continents, wrote in three different languages, and over the span of like… 2 millenia! Just look up J Warner Wallace the cold case detective on youtube, or Voddie Baucham’s sermon on why he believes the Bible if you like videos. If you like books, dive into the Good Book itself: there is nothing else quite like it in its depth and consistency. Like, seriously, Star Wars Lore is already messed up within a couple generations and they have a group of people who try to hold the canon. If this stuff about God was made up, it wouldn’t be clear and consistent. Muhammad’s Qu’ran has contradictions throughout, like when he exalted and later decried idolatry, and he was one man. The Bible was written down by many writers over tens of centuries and it tells the same single story. It’s unlike anything else, not a mere myth or fable (Titus 1:14).)
**(Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22 prophesy about Jesus. All the Messianic prophesies were fulfilled. Like, seriously, this stuff evidentially stands. If anyone’s interested, try looking into it. In Isaiah chapter forty-six verses nine and ten, you can see that God’s mark of veracity is true prophecy, because He knows the end from the beginning and His hand is in creation… hence in Matthew 6, circa verse 30, Jesus can tell us not to worry for tomorrow because God graciously provides.)
The last book of the Bible, in the penultimate chapter, says this:
_Revelation 21:4-5 And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful._

It hurts to see him go, it truly does. He gave me so many good memories and sparked my academic interests with the, admittedly over the top, way he presented the theory he was covering and presented evidence to back it up. It hurts to know that he's stepping down, but it brings me joy to know that he is passing the torch instead of snuffing out the flame.
May his legacy burn on like the fervor he ignited in the hearts of many. He's earned the chance to rest, and I say we let him.

Late to the party but Game Theory and MatPat absolutely defined my young adulthood. I can't nail down one video in particular that did it. I started watching around the time he first was trying to do pixel measurements to nail down Sonic's speed. It stuck with me though, and as it expanded to other Theory content I grew with it. Film Theory was a natural adaptation. Food theory excited me greatly since I am a culinary artist major myself. Style theory was amazing as someone who always wanted to be more stylish but felt like they were falling short. In short, Team Theorist absolutely defined my early adulthood and helped me grow as a person. It warms my heart to see outside confirmation that MatPat is as good a person as his own brand presents.

I remember, when I was still in my Undertale phase sometime around 3rd or 4th grade (this was around 2016 to 2019 btw), I watched Mat’s vid on the “Sans is Ness” theory, and me being the naive elementary school kid that I was, I believed it. And now that I’ve known that it’s called a “theory” for a reason many moons ago, I’ve always kept up with Matpat. I eventually moved to his Film Theory videos and I enjoy those the most out of all 4 channels in my opinion. It’s going to be sad losing MatPat. He’s been apart of our childhoods for so long. He may’ve ruined them in turn, but he did it in the most theoretical way possible. MatPat has literally changed my life. Growing up as a kid, I was alone when it comes to my favorite things. There weren't other kids around me that liked what I liked. I was the nerd nobody wanted to be around. Everyone played other games than I did. My first theory I ever saw from Game Theory was the one about how deadly and heavy Link's hookshot is. That immediately got my interest. Not only was there a Zelda-based video on UA-cam besides gameplay and music, but it was also scientific and broken down in ways I absolutely adored. That started a binge watch of theories that I've long since lost count of. It opened my eyes to an online community I never knew existed outside my little bubble. And then FNAF came around. I got into FNAF because of MatPat and his LOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRREEE theories. I met most of my current and best friends thanks to FNAF. I cannot word how much has happened because of discovering MatPat's work. He is quite literally the first domino of how my life has been the last... what, ten years? That's nearly half my life at this point! FNAF has become just as strong as a comfort series for me as Zelda has... and it is all thanks to MatPat's first domino. Also following that trail is what led me to the Zeldatuber community, which thus in turn led to me discovering you, Bandit, one of my favorite content creators. So you could imagine the glee I felt when not only did I find out you were both a Zelda and FNAF fan, but also a strong theorizer. Then when that stream with MatPat happened and you two collaborated... I think that was one of my favorite moments on UA-cam period. For a favorite theory, I do not think I have one. I will always have a nostalgic factor for the hookshot one, but all his FNAF theories, and just other theories too. It was always a blast just to hear MatPat go through the research he spent so much work on doing and the theories he crafted. I guess you could say I did not watch solely for the type/fandom of the theory he did, but for him himself. The same could be applied to you. My favorite content creators are those that keep the human and the personality true behind the camera and screen. While I was heavily saddened when I found out about MatPat's retirement, I am forever grateful for what he has done so far and I cannot wait to see what he does in the future. Sure, it's sad he isn't going to be the main focus anymore, but he will always have a legacy, and he is still being active in many other projects too! Even though he said that we are not just numbers, I know my presence is very small in the community of theorists out there. I continue to hold onto the hope for the chance one day to truly tell MatPat how much of an impact he's made on my life, to truly thank him for what he has done, and maybe even get to meet him somehow, despite how slim that chance is. So, I guess this message will have to do for now. I know he will likely never see it, but Twitter does not allow me to do this long of tweet. And I could say the same about you, Bandit. You've had a very strong impact on my life too and I am extremely happy you got to personally interact with MatPat. In my eyes, not only are you guys, essentially, internet celebrities, but you are real people. And that is what I admire the most about you both. Thank you for the years of experiences and memories! Here's to a new and hopefully bright future.

MatPat, and FNAF have... helped me and my friend through some really rough times. Fnaf itself has become such a big part of our life it's... cringe to say I know but... it's hard to imagine life without it these past 3 years (I'm late to the Franchise I know). Hell, it helped save my friend's life, I wish I was joking but I'm not. When I saw MatPat's video I was opening weeping. Just sobbing because I would miss GT Live. I know it's going to be going on for a bit longer but I would miss it, it's become a big part of my weeks and not having it feels... offputting.
It is... really... really heartwarming to hear that MatPat was as kind in person as he seems on his videos. Sometimes I see people playing a character and I don't know who they really are but it just felt like MatPat was... real. A real person. It's emotional seeing this video, and matpat's video. I'm crying again typing this, but I'm also happy for him. I'm happy that he's done what he's wanted to do and that now, he can hand that off to others and do things he wants to do.
While I can't really say what my favorite theory is, there are so many... I think that my favorite Video of MatPat's is a recent one. If you want a nice... long laugh. Check out GT Live's video on Chickn Nugget. I have watched it a dozen times, and it still makes me smile. I watched it after the announcement video because I needed to laugh and smile again. I can't recommend it enough.
