Hi Gary. Another clear and easy to understand video! Well done. I find iCloud, once set up, does a masterful job duplicating the files and items you choose on all your devices without any further input. It just works seamlessly. It is a far cry from the old iTunes method of synchronizing, which was ponderous and opaque. Thank you for all you do! 👏👏👏
nice, tks, but how can I see trough wifi the iPad files on my Mac,? the same that you explain on minute 7:00 but for the files from my iPad to appeer on my Mac (Finder). thanks!
I don't think you can since the iPad doesn't have network file sharing. So put files in iCloud Drive on your iPad and you can easily see them anywhere.
Sir at 4:29 what does Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected do? 1) What apps are synced using this? and is this syncing from iPhone to Mac or Mac to iPhone or both ways. 2) Moreover I recently found a very dangerous loop hole, If we go to the photos subsection and Sync photos from our Mac to iPhone by selecting a particular folder, it DELETES all the existing photos of our iPhone and only keeps the photos from folder synced from Mac, instead of just adding the new photos. 3) Kindly confirm if this loophole is there for "Automatically Sync when this iPhone is connected" in general tab as well, as I do not want to lose any file on both my Mac and iPhone ( I don't have iCloud backup). Thanks and regards :)
Lots of big questions there. For the first one see support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/turn-automatic-syncing-on-or-off-on-mac-mchlda9a4a0e/mac For 2, yes, that is what "sync" means. It replaces the photos synced last time with the photos you want synced this time. Maybe consider using iCloud Photos if you want to modernize. Also use iCloud Drive to share your files with your Mac and iPhone instead of syncing.
Hi Gary, why my phone connect to Mac doesn't show the toolbar on top? like General music movies..., it is nothing, just some photos. and I can't see the eject icon beside my iPhone on the left side bar.
Hi Gary, One of the most annoying things about Macs is a notice that says "You do not have permission to access the requested resource". I c an fix this on my iMac but not on my iPad, where it denies me access to the music files stored on my iMac that I am trying to play through Home Sharing. How can I fix this permanently?
Hi Gary, thank you for the information. Have you done a way to transfer files from iPhone to iPad? I film sometimes on my iPhone and the files are saved to a folder. The problem I have is trying to transfer those files to a folder on my iPad as if I AirDrop them they automatically seem to always get put into photos and I really want them in a folder for editing on the iPad.
Why not just use iCloud? Or any cloud service of your choice? Otherwise, AirDrop should work as it should give you a choice of where to receive it, Photos or Files.
AirDrop acts totally flakey between our iPad and Mac, sometimes OK, sometimes recipient doesn't show up, sometimes recipient shows up but automatically declines offered file[s] -- finally I followed your instructions to set up network file sharing and it worked like a charm --- Many Thanks, Indeed!
Photos as files? Or photos in the Photos App Library? For the first, just use iCloud Drive, that's the easiest. For the second, using iCloud Photos Library is the way to go. Otherwise, the old cable-sync method.
Thanks a lot MacMost, you usually have the most complete info. I have a question though, I am trying to transfer photos from and old iPhone to my Mac, then from my Mac to a new iPhone. When I use Airdrop it destroys all the Metadata (like original capture date) so I'm wondering, is there any non-destructive way to transfer these files? I have several hundred I'm trying to keep.
It doesn't "destroy" the metadata. The metadata is INSIDE the file. Don't confuse it with the file creation date. If you open the file in Preview and look at the Exif info, you'll see the metadata and the date the photo was taken. This is what the Photos app will use. Try it with a photo and see.
Hi. You didn't mention an amazing method. You can just copy and paste files - try to command+C something on the Mac and then to select paste on the iPhone in the files app by taping and holding on any empty space.
Gary thank you for this comprehensive vid. I have a question for you. I just started photography and I first dump all my photos from SD to Mac to filter them, I’m thinking which method is the best to transfer from my Mac to iPhone, where I will do the editing on LR mobile? Thank you.
Just use iCloud Photos. Then they appear across your devices automatically. Import them from SD card to your Photos library, then you'll see them in your Photos library on your iPhone.
You could do it if they were files from the Finder to the Files app on your iPhone. But iCloud Drive would be easier. But that doesn't help you if you want them in the Music app.
forgive my ignorance but @ 7:25 network file sharing .. im confused with wether I use my computers name/ admin password or my itunes account name and password. please help!
Thanks for yet another really informative video! Airdrop is not always working though... There are several times when I'm trying to transfer files (i.e. photos) from my iphone SE2020 to my mba m1, and I'm stuck with the waiting sigh for too long and the transfer is not done. Other times it works as it's supposed though
Thank you for the great video! What is the name of the big cable port that is on the Mac Air model 2014, and also on the MacBook pro 2015? The one that was done away with now. I don't know the names of these things😅☺
Impossible for me to guess which one you are talking about. This page lists all of the ports on a 2014 MacBook Air: support.apple.com/kb/sp700?locale=en_US
Terrific video, Gary! I’m astonished how you can get so much useful information and easy to get in such a short time! Do you have any video explaining the best way to watch movies and series in iPhone? I have the archive of the serie/movie in the Mac and want to watch that on iPhone/iPad. Do I need a non native app to do that?
thanks for the video, i have iphone 15 pro and macbook pro... I use the app with storage method and simply drag and drop files from macbook pro to iphone 15🙏😎
Hello, thnx for your video. On my iPhone I have a read-only-photo-album ( transferred some time ago from annoteer MacBook to my iPhone). I don't manage to transfer this album neither by Photos neither by the Image app. Can you help me? Kr, Marc
So that was transferred from a Mac to your iPhone using the old cable-sync method with iTunes? Not sure how you'd get it from your iPhone back to your Mac. Do you not have a copy of those photos on your Mac anymore? Not sure if there is a way and I don't have anything in that situation to try things out myself.
5:45 I checked the “show this iPhone when on wifi” box in finder. My iPhone shows up in finder over wifi, but not in my mac’s photos app. I tried restarting my Mac, but it still doesn’t show up. Any idea how to fix this?
Not sure if it does. I haven't synced photos that way in years so I'm not sure. You may need to connect with a cable for that, or look in the Finder for the option there.
Hello! I have my iMovie library on a flash drive because it was taking up too much space on my MacBook. I would like to be able to edit these projects on my IPhone as well, but I’m worried because the files are pretty large. Will connecting the flash drive to my phone allow me to edit on my phone without causing any problems?
Hi Gary, I am a longtime fan of yours since migrating from a PC to Mac in 2014. I always seem to learn something from each of your videos. One additional quick way that I copy files/etc is the basic copy and paste. I stumbled across this and it works great. Thanks as always for sharing your wealth of knowledge.
@@JustinMacri007 So you want to move them to your Mac and then delete them from your iPhone? How about just turning on iCloud Photos and then you can keep them in both places, and new photos would automatically be in both place? Do it that way. Otherwise, you'll need to connect your iPhone to your Mac, use the Photos app to import them there, and choose to remove them from your iPhone when you do so. That's the old way of doing it anyway.
Dang I searched the internet for this exact topic. I should have come to you first. You never let me down. You have insight into issues with AirDrop not working with 10.13.6 Mac?
@@macmost yeah. That it. Just looked at it. Late 2011 model. And Airdrop is 2012 and after. Thanks for the other options to transfer files in your video though.
Gary Great video on file transfers. Can I trim the file sizes down for photos and other large graphic images. Similar to what happens when file is sent out in Preview I believe?
I would like to know, if I have a large document ( in Gbs) on my iphone saved in the files app maybe downloads or docs etc. and I want to transfer it to my mac without airdrop ( maybe if I want to use a faster wired connection) what should I do?
how do I share files from iPhone or iPad to MacBook so when I open finder I see iPad or iPhone in my locations area to the left in finder app? without a wire? thank you for the vid its helpful but not all the way what I'm looking for.
Hi Gary I just bought new iPhone 15 and wondered could you help me sync it to my iMac as the cables are incompatible I know its a big ask but Im sure you could help me best wishes Jim
Hi Gary is there anyway to send a file or photos from a iphone/ipad to a mac without having to turn off it's firewall? When I have the firewall on the item I airdrop just says waiting to my PC, but if I turn off firewall and do it again I can receive an Airdropped file instantly. I can send airdrop something to a iphone/ipad from a PC no problem, but the other way around not unless I turn off the firewall. Kind of a pain in the butt to do that every time for airdrop. Any thoughts Thanks
It's interesting that iPhone connected to Windows machine, File Explorer shows iPhone folders directly. Wish I could do the same on Finder. Meanwhile, we can use of course Image Capture as shown on your video.
This is really helpful. Does anyone know how to get my photos synched from Finder onto my iPhone from a previous phone I no longer have (that wasn't synched to iCloud), into iCloud so I can then turn on iCloud Photos on my phone without losing the previously synched photos from Finder? This seems to be a problem.
So you no longer have any copy of these photos other than ones synced from a Mac (via a cable) to your iPhone a while ago? The originals are gone? I would first back them up by selecting them, then use the Share button to "Save to Files" so you have them in your Files too. Then turn on iCloud Photos and it should merge what you have on your iPhone with what you have in iCloud Photos. But if it doesn't, then you have those photos elsewhere too.
Hi Gary. We take around a 100 photos every day for inspection reports. Which one of these options is the quickest way? We’ve played around with both airdrop, iCloud photos, etc and find it to be inconsistent in speed. At times we have over 200 photos at a time we need to come through. Sometimes it can take forever for the pics to show up on our end. Just wondering if there’s any best practices in speeding up this process for bulk photos. Thanks!!
I have a sandisk portable ssd. Will this work for getting files off a pc and transferred to the new Mac? I need a video for that…lol…just have some photos and a few files to transfer, but I am scared. 😂🤣. I have watched many of your videos…do you have one on that…I did get the iMac up and running and all set up, thanks to you. Quite proud of myself. ☺️. I know just enough to be dangerous.
Is there a way to direct photos taken on my iphone directly into a folder/album in photos, through icloud, rather than them just appearing in recents? Then I could have a separate folder for phone photos to access on my mac.
No, but you can use Smart Albums to have an album that automatically shows anything taken with your iPhone, or the last x days from your iPhone, or whatever you want. ua-cam.com/video/DiaBtjtZMAs/v-deo.html
Thanks, Gary; The one sharing option missing for me, is mail. I keep all mail in Mail Boxes "On my Mac" which is great on the Mac, but hidden from me on iPhone / iPad. I know I can export them as pdfs and then share them or put them into live email address folders, but then they appear in "All inboxes".
Hi Gary, sometimes the Photo library is not showing up in iMovie. Then, go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy, select Photos on the left hand side and make sure that the iMovie box is checked to allow access. ... This was so frustrating before finding the solution!
Hi G So, i own an old 2gb ipod shuffle (square). I can't seem to get my mac to recognize it anymore. what is the problem. Cos luckily i have it loaded with my fav. songs, so i still use it extensively when i run! Pls help!
I synced photos from my mac to my iphone which now appear as "From My Mac" in my iphone. Now my mac got reset due to some reason, how can I sync those "From My Mac" photos back with my Mac ? Photos app in Mac is showing only newly clicked under Imports Section. Airdrop is frequently failing.
So you aren't using iCloud and you have no backup of your Mac? And you synced manually from your Mac to your iPhone before? This is going to be tough. You can turn on iCloud Photos and let your iPhone upload the photos to iCloud. Otherwise, AirDrop is your best bet. But you may not even have the full resolution versions of those photos on your iPhone. Not sure what you did to sync them before, exactly. Contact Apple Support for more help on this.
Why would my Apple devices all of a sudden stop recognizing any other devices to airdrop to? Wifi connected & signed in on all devices, it worked many times before but now neither phone nor iPad recognize the MacBook from either direction. I had to go as far as use that network shared server option to get my files.. which is handy, thanks for that!
Hi Gary, I have been trying to transfer some of my music from a very old ipod touch to my iphone 13. I have been able to transfer to my Macbook air but no matter what I try, I can't get it to copy to my iphone. The problem is only with music that I have taken from actual CD's and not purchased from itunes. I am a very senior citizen and not extremely tech savvy but I suspect that is the issue here. Am I beating my head against a wall? Thanks! Diane Sheridan
You usually don't transfer from and iPhone to a Mac. It is the other way around. Do you have the original files on your Mac from when you ripped the CDs?
Thank you so much for this video. It is very very educational. My only question is when you use a cable to plug in your iPhone you did mention that some of the apps and folders that pop up on the Mac are not on the files app on the phone, but the same is in reverse for an example. Your docs folder does not exist on your mac. Question is if I want to copy right now, 1000 videos to my iphone, I have no way to do it with a wire I have to neither do airdrop which will take a year or I have to do dropbox which will take a lifetime My question is why isn't there a way to simply transfer it with a wired directly to a folder that I already created on the files app just like it would be a Samsung device Why can't iPhone just allow me to use it like a regular USB? Why do I need to use a dongle in order to be able to transfer files from a memory card? Why can't I just transferred directly from my Mac to a specific folder on the files app
I can't answer "why" questions, of course. I don't work for Apple. But AirDrop should be pretty fast. iCloud would be better because you can then see the 1000 videos, but you'd only download each one when you needed it. Hard to suggest anything else without knowing what you are trying to do by having 1000 videos on your iPhone like that.
@@macmost the workaround I found is to download VLC player and drag and drop files into VLC player folder and then once it’s in that folder on my phone, I’m able to then move it to other folders
It’s so weird and I can’t understand why Apple does this, like if you plug-in an android phone into your MacBook, you can drag and drop files back-and-forth but if you plug in your own iPhone, you can’t drag and drop files anywhere you want you’re limited to a few apps that allow the file transfer Very weird stuff and this whole synchronize business is also very stupid like who seriously needs to synchronize music today. Everyone has Apple Music subscription and no one transfers music anymore or photos because 99% of people back up everything to iCloud and have it available on all devices so literally the only thing that I would ever want to transfer our random files and stuff that I want instantly available on my iPhone without having to use Wi-Fi and upload to iCloud and download. And to do that scope copying and pasting Apple makes it so complicated. This is why I was so hesitant about changing to Apple in the first place. It’s for all these little bugs that can drive me crazy.! but I still love the Apple hardware so I don’t think I’m going anywhere so fast
Hi Gary, can Image Capture work via bluetooth? Or, is Image Capture only for cable transfer? I know I could use AirDrop for transfers. I just got hooked on Image Capture because of you.
Sorry one more. I’m actually doing some work where I need to give the files to someone else, so it extends beyond just storage for myself. Thank you for the video. 👍
That's very different than this. Use iCloud Drive file sharing, or whatever cloud service you like. Or if it is local, use AirDrop (if it isn't working then troubleshoot).
Is it possible to see all your folders on the iPhone or iPad when connected with a cable? It doesn’t seem like it. For example, the “Downloads” folder on my iPad doesn’t seem accessible, just folders for specific apps.
Hi Gary thank you. The difficulty I have is transferring files between Mac and Windows. I can format,a drive so it it compatible on either, but dragging files onto the drive on Mac (jpegs) won’t open in windows and vice versa. Please help 🙏🙏

Hi, I just transferred images from ssd to my iPhone 15 in files app, but images are not showing in photos app, but these are available in files app. Suggest please
Photos does not show things that you have as files. It shows images in your Photos library. So if you want them to be seen in Photos, you'll need to import them into your Photos library. View it in the Files app, use the Share button and "Save Image" and it should send a copy there.

HELP PLS! Serious question…I’ve been transferring photos/videos from iPhone to Mac via airdrop and just recently, the date changes to today’s date and not the original created date. I know I can see original date via Tools > Exif but I need it to go back to how it was (not having to click on Tools etc) Do I need to change any settings?
How are you transferring, exactly? If you are moving them as files, then you are creating new files on your Mac and those dates are the creation dates of those files. The date of the photo is stored in the metadata inside the photo like you said. Instead of using files, use a tool like Photos to store your photos and it will use the metadata for organization.
@@macmost I transfer by airdropping the photos/videos to my Mac. It used to carry over the created date automatically, no problem, but somehow it’s now todays date. I really think it’s a setting in my iPhone but I can’t figure it out.
Question: I connected a cable from my iPhone 13 to my iMac. I clicked to allow WiFi. But the phone did not show up as a device in Photos or Image Capture. Was I supposed to sync my iPhone after I connected the cable? Or should I call Apple Tech-Help to see what happened?
It easily, no. Do you not have the original files that would have been on your Mac or PC in order to get to you iPhone? Can you just rip the CD again, if that is where it came from?
@@macmost Thanks for the reply. The original file disappeared from my Mac and doesn't show up in time machine. I can probably find the CD it came from. It just seems like there should be a way to transfer it from the iPhone to the Mac just like any other file. Just another Apple thing.

First, figure out what you were doing that caused the duplicates. Make sure you change that behavior so it doesn't keep being a problem. Then go through your photos and clean up duplicates. Just use the All Photos view so photos "taken" at the same time would be right next to each other.

Depends on the app. Most iOS apps won't work on Mac. Some newer apps will work on M1/M2 Macs if the developer has allowed it.
Gary’s tutorial videos are so easy to follow, even for those of us who are technically challenged. Near perfect timing and cadence.
Hi. You didn't mention an amazing method. You can just copy and paste files - try to command+C something on the Mac and then to select paste on the iPhone in the files app by taping and holding on any empty space.
Thanks a lot. The Air Drop app worked really well!

Just use iCloud Photos. Then they appear across your devices automatically. Import them from SD card to your Photos library, then you'll see them in your Photos library on your iPhone.
Oh..!! the File Sharing option was great! - Thanks
Can I transfer MP3 files from my iMac to my iPhone's music playlists via airdrop? Thanks for creating and sharing this video.
You could do it if they were files from the Finder to the Files app on your iPhone. But iCloud Drive would be easier. But that doesn't help you if you want them in the Music app.
Is there a way to turn on automatic acceptance of transfers without having to click on Accept every time?

Do you not have a copy of those photos on your Mac anymore? Not sure if there is a way and I don't have anything in that situation to try things out myself.
5:45 I checked the “show this iPhone when on wifi” box in finder. My iPhone shows up in finder over wifi, but not in my mac’s photos app. I tried restarting my Mac, but it still doesn’t show up. Any idea how to fix this?
Not sure if it does. I haven't synced photos that way in years so I'm not sure. You may need to connect with a cable for that, or look in the Finder for the option there.
AirDrop works fine for transferring ringtones and alert tones. How could some of the other techniques shown be used for transferring these files?

I don't think the iMovie for Mac and iMovie for iPhone libraries are compatible like that.

Great video on file transfers. Can I trim the file sizes down for photos and other large graphic images. Similar to what happens when file is sent out in Preview I believe?
Not sure what you mean, but you can certainly using graphics app (or just Photos) to lower the quality of the photo to reduce the size.

Hi Gary I just bought new iPhone 15 and wondered could you help me sync it to my iMac as the cables are incompatible I know its a big ask but Im sure you could help me best wishes Jim
If you want to do a cable sync, you'd need a cable. Just get a regular USB-C to USB-C (assuming your Mac is USB-C) and use that.
Excellent tutorial
It's interesting that iPhone connected to Windows machine, File Explorer shows iPhone folders directly. Wish I could do the same on Finder. Meanwhile, we can use of course Image Capture as shown on your video.
Gary, you are the best!
Awesome 🎉

Possibly. Depends on the files and how well-organized you are. Try it and see.
Is there a way to direct photos taken on my iphone directly into a folder/album in photos, through icloud, rather than them just appearing in recents? Then I could have a separate folder for phone photos to access on my mac.

Hi Gary, sometimes the Photo library is not showing up in iMovie. Then, go to System Preferences>Security & Privacy, select Photos on the left hand side and make sure that the iMovie box is checked to allow access. ... This was so frustrating before finding the solution!

So, i own an old 2gb ipod shuffle (square).
Not sure. Try restarting them.
Wow how do u learn all these crazy tips???
Thank you so much for this video. It is very very educational. My only question is when you use a cable to plug in your iPhone you did mention that some of the apps and folders that pop up on the Mac are not on the files app on the phone, but the same is in reverse for an example. Your docs folder does not exist on your mac.
Question is if I want to copy right now, 1000 videos to my iphone, I have no way to do it with a wire I have to neither do airdrop which will take a year or I have to do dropbox which will take a lifetime
My question is why isn't there a way to simply transfer it with a wired directly to a folder that I already created on the files app just like it would be a Samsung device
Why can't iPhone just allow me to use it like a regular USB?
It’s so weird and I can’t understand why Apple does this, like if you plug-in an android phone into your MacBook, you can drag and drop files back-and-forth but if you plug in your own iPhone, you can’t drag and drop files anywhere you want you’re limited to a few apps that allow the file transfer
Very weird stuff and this whole synchronize business is also very stupid like who seriously needs to synchronize music today.

@@vickayaker3307 5:07 shows the list of apps that have documents available for you to transfer with this method. If you have documents outside of apps like this, just in your own folder, they won't show there.
iCloud Drive works simply: You put a file in iCloud Drive, then you look on your Mac in iCloud Drive and it is there. It is a shared drive between your devices. No need to connect, sync or anything. You just see the same files on all devices with no effort.
