I'm surprised you didn't mention the album cover. Somehow the whole concept of the band is perfectly captured by just going out for a fun bit of ice skating while wearing a Darkthrone jacket. Love it!
I laughed when they revealed the cover. A lot of people were whinging. They just don't get it. Haha.
@@WorIdComingDown You have to admit it is a pretty lame cover.
@@Assimilator702 if he removed the skates, im sure you would be singing a different tune. Haha.
@@WorIdComingDown I didn't even notice the skates at first. If you see the deluxe edition box set it seems like the two covers are somehow tied together.
Skating across the astral :=)))
I am definitely enjoying the new Darkthrone album 🤘Perfect timing with the cold weather about to come 👍👍🤘🤘🙏
Yeah, it's getting chilly here in Toronto.
One of my all time favorite bands, I always look forward to a new release.
Us too!
Lets revert back to the episode where Dethklokk started to record their album in the Mariana's Trench
Go into the water... live there. Die there.
lol!
murmaider is now stuck in my head...
Haha, great reference.
Darkthrone are like Enslaved in that I do not give a shit what they make, full trust earned & I’m all in to whatever they feel like releasing. I do wonder though, what was the costume that promoted the big shave? The crap grows back continually for some of us but still, to go full pink face is a real commitment, even if temporary.
The costume was Alucard from the Netflix adaptation of Castlevania.
I like it, hell I like all Darkthrone albums.
I like more the older stuff more but my roommate hates the older albums and only likes never stuff. He doesn’t like the production on the older ones.
Same, when I was a kid it was my first black metal ever and it was scary and thrilling for a 12 Year old.
@@richardaaron4454 I've never liked the low production on black metal albums. I wish darkthrone would re-record the first three black metal albums they did.
I love all of them. Each record and production gives a snapshot in time for Darkthrone.
Yeah, they really do no wrong.
i love the album cover. it's perfect.
I love how it's got a classic look until you notice the ice skates.
This new album is a banger. Every song sounds great and different. Very good shit by them.
Darkthrone keeping the streak alive for sure.
it's a very good record and I think it has no fillers. I don't remember anything from the last two records, AND considering that I'm not a big doomy stuff fan... it means something that I liked this new album that much.
It's a really fun record. Glad they took the chances on it that they did.
I was wondering, while waiting to head off onto the TTC for the Right Now...
What am I actually waiting for?
Turns Out, Banger TV.
Ver is one of my fave bands. Absolute riff master.
Great review man! I am really loving this album!
Darkthrone can do no wrong! Fenriz and Nocturno sound like they are having a blast jamming on these new tunes. I love it! They are keeping the spirit of Celtic Frost alive with this current sound (TBH, they have always had CF as a major influence).
Yeah!
There are Albums I like more than others, for sure.
But they're always changing their sound, and I'm cool with that.
@@astralmass I love all of it. Even the death metal stuff from their '91 debut is up there with bands like Morbid Angel, Obituary, Autopsy, etc. in terms of quality!
Yeah, Darkthrone has become one of my favourite bands of all time (up there with Bathory, Venom, Motorhead, and Priest), because their albums are always good, and their music is constantly evolving and developing, but always in a logical and organic way, and each album kind of leads to the next one. You're right, though, that Frost influence has always been there (especially on "Panzerfaust!"). \m/
@@johnholton8157 Panzerfaust is a great record! Drunk Nocturno cracks me up. "AAAAAAArrrrgggghhh..." 🤣
This album literally had nothing to do with Celtic Frost sound. They did it already on Panzerfaust and it was a killer. Full of fury, groove and also atmosphere. Astral Fortress is like a compilation of lazy rehearsal riffs lacking all fore mentioned. And what is this "away from trends" bullshit? They are the trend. No matter what they release people are all hyped, they sell thousands of colored vinyls for fanboys and after 5 years no one looks this back as a "masterpiece" like they did not look back for Circle the Wagons, Arctic Thunder, etc
Props to Jack Control (Enormous Door Mastering) for how good this album sounds.
Sounds absolutely fantastic.
Hey Hey, I'm Jamming to the new Dead Cross, Had Astral Fortress on the last couple days. I like it. Darkthrone never disappoints me because I've never Pigeonholed them to a specific genre. Good music by a couple weird dudes that would tell you weird stories and make your relatives uncomfortable at a BBQ.
Darkthrone is my favorite black metal band! This is a good one, I like the cover too!
Too bad they havent played black metal for years -__-
When listening for the first time I was hoping Eon 2 would be a Death n Roll track but the Power Metal sounding riff was welcoming.
Yeah, I loved that segment.
Loved that random phone notification on Kolbotn
My Friday…has been made….and is complete…..🖤
I didn't know they even had a new album coming out.
I'm picking up my copy from the post office tomorrow and I can't wait to spin it!
Ice skating under the funeral moon.
WHAT WAS THE COSTUME?
It's rifftastic!
Bare boned, minimalist, riffs a plenty.
Dark Throne..TOUR please.
We need bands like you guys to show the kids how to play organic, dark, heavy metal.
Please?
Very good album. Terrific progression. Nuff said.
Agreed! Though I certainly had a lot more to say haha.
I am very very happy you mentioned Brad Neely
One of my big influences!
Noice! Sound mixing on the video is much better! Got to give to video the 999th like too!
Sweet. Thanks, Blayne.
I think Darkthrone fell into a bit of a hole after the Crustthrone days ended. This is the fist Doomthrone record that I really love!!! Hope they go further into a real 70’s Rockthrone phase!!!!
Love to hear you're back on the train! I certainly miss Crusthrone though.
I find it funny that some people swear this album is full of Celtic Frost riffs and others say it is leaning towards 70's. Its like people are listening two different albums and still talking about one
Hopefully not
I haven't listened to a Darkthrone album since Sardonic Wrath (love that album BTW), but maybe Astral Fortress would be a good place to jump back in. Also, Blayne thank you for reminder to check out Implore! I heard the song Sun Deprived courtesy of my Release Radar on Spotify and meant to check it out, but got swamped with a lot of other albums!
I’ve been bangin’ arctic thunder recently, it’s sooo good
@@hamburgersandfuriousanger6820 artic thunder is underrated in my opinion
You should check out eternal hails! Love that record
Oldstar, Arctic Thunder, Circling the wagons and of course The Cult is alive are the best ones they have done since then imo.
I have “Sardonic Wrath” shirt. It’s one of my favorite shirts.
I've thoroughly enjoyed the Doom period. Arctic Thunder remains one of my favourite modern Darkthrone albums. Old Star is also epic. I have only given the new one a listen or two so I need to immerse myself a bit more before making a judgement but my first impression is positive. They rarely disappoint.
This one sounds so much like Celtic Frost, in the vocals too. I like it alright, but wish they would speed some more songs up. Love the album cover.
Can you point ONE CF riff on this album?
@@raakareiska9804 This entire band is a Celtic Frost riff lmao. My favorite band by far, but you can hear CF/Hellhammer in almost everything they do.
@@SharkxBait93 Except like Transylvanian Hunger album that has zero CF riffs.
I was worried after your Behemoth review that you'd be down on Darkthrone as well... glad we agree on this one 4 out of 5!
Well, Behemoth is plastic Wacken death metal, Darkthrone has always been the opposite of that. It's pretty natural for somebody to like one but dislike the other.
I'm only negative when I have to be. I want every album to be great!
Behemoth was better than this
Fantastic album all the way through.
All being said under a funeral moon is still my favorite Black Metal album
It has everything that this one does not
yes, but would you like them to do Under a funeral moon part 2 or 6 and so on? For me, one of many things good with Darkthrone is that they move and do whatever they want. That marks the difference between artists and entertainers.
"that other guy" 😭😭 dank
Anyone hear the new Deathsiege? Some decent Black/Death.
Implore are back! I thought they split??? That Depopulation album was awesome...
Hell yeah on the sacrifice shirt. All early death metal artists recognize that sacrifice album’s influence.
One of the greatest bands that deserved to be way bigger.
@@BangerTV maybe you can do a show on them exposing metal heads to cool sound bites from the band along with major metal acts citing their influence? Then do DBC, their riffs are so memorable along with lyrics and the drumming was stellar
20000 Miles under the sea by Nautilus is probably the influence for this album
This reviewer sounds just like Blayne wtf
Hahahahah.
Story Checks Out.
🤣
Canadian preeminent Blayne impersonator.
Great album, I have the big box set of it.
Oooo, that thing was nice!
Instant classic IMO
Hails to Vér! Giants of Mirk is great!
Sacrificer T-shirt? 👌🤘🤘
UNDAAAH THAA SEEEEEEEEA
This is really a tribute to Celtic Frost, but with its own spin on it. I'm a huge Tom Warrior/Fischer fan anyway, so I'm liking this "doomthrone" period way better than the crust/punk stuff.
When wasn’t Darkthrone a tribute to Celtic Frost? On all their work, CF is the main influence.
@@BanjoSick Transylvanian Hunger was a odd one cause it missed the CF riffs and drum beats. It was much more straight forward blast beat and more melodic than their CF copy material. Definitely they always was inspired by CF but these claims about how CF can be heard in everything they did are exaggeration
@@raakareiska9804 Hmm Transylvanian Hunger, yes. I didn't think of that one. That's really the odd one out. Funny that that is such a legendary release!
New shave. Who dat?!
PS: we still love you, sending vegan hugs!
Nice worm hat
Babycakes!
If celtic frost made a mid tempo album
Hehe, Fenriz still enjoys his time working at a post office where he gets to sort mail while listening to music all day.
Twitch channel done?
For me I've kinda had my fill on their black heavy metal/doom music and would prefer a bit of injection of speed and black metal riffing again. It's better than their last two though
I’ve actually heard a few bad reviews of this album and it’s baffling. Darkthrone never disappoints.
I was like it's kinda meh on my first few listens, but it gets better with every spin. Definitely a more subjective release though, you either like this style or you don't. But by no means does this deserve bad reviews, it's still very well written, as usual.
We're all smiles about the record over here.
Lol
I didnt know Wes Scantlin is a Darkthrone fan.
Haha great burn!
Who is the new presenter ?
That's Blayne Smith LOL
He shaved his beard for Halloween
A Beardless Dude.
Seems to know His Shit though.
I'm In.
Blayne's 12 year old nephew.
They mastered the grim sound and feel...and when they seem to be absolutely uncompromised, that's when you can expect a great album from them.
Finally a good review...i dont get the hate this album is getting..it has some of the catchiest riffs theyve done..i love this album..it gets better with multiple listens. I think its their best album in a while.
Catchiest riffs they ever made? I dont even hear one riff that I would remember tomorrow
Is it getting hate? I thought everyone was digging it pretty hard.
Repetitive,and boring
Blayne looks damn hot clean shaven tho...I can't lie 🔥
I think Darkthrone is an interesting band. They've mixed it up throughout the years with something called "black 'n' roll". Transylvanian Hunger is a classic. I thought this album was good too. I listened to the band on your shirt recently. They're like the Canadian version of Slayer. Not bad!
Sacrifice are the best thrash band that didn't make it huge.
Ok who were you for Halloween?
Lemmy
Darkthrone do what they want. They don't care anymore really.
That's why I love them!
that's good, most people don't care about their bad music either.
They never gave a single flying fuck about what others are expecting from them. After "Soulside..." they could have become a successful but boring Death Metal band and they changed their direction causing uproar from the label. Then there was "Total Death" where they basically started their departure from bogstandard Norsecore, after that there was their Crustthrone-era.
They do care! That is why they do whatever they want. If they didn't care you'd hear them trying to reproduce and replicate their old albums over and over... like many other older bands do!
What`s wrong with not having a beard ? ........ Metalheads don`t all have to look like extras for the Vikings TV show
this album has one of the best album covers that I've seen
Dind't Fenriz and/or his cat briefly become the mayor of his home town?
He was on the city council. It's quite amazing how he roe from basically being a total outcast to local prominence.
Not the best Darkthrone album though it contains some very old characteristics of the band. When they get melancholic they can really throw you back in the glorious '90s days. The production is also very good.
Cover looks like it should be for a rap album lol, still goes hard though
Why don't you talk about that other guy?
That sounds really good! Is it ok to say that about black metal?
I really don't mind that a younger UA-camr has had a stroke but maybe he should have been given at least a few more months to recover.
Dad please put the beard back
No, I think you actually look better when shaved.
Like a twat
Celtic cult👹
One word review ... underwhelmed.
J aime l album 😎😍😘😗😗😚☺🐂🐃🐄🐘🐘🐫🐐🐴 foad
Here's a clean, non-offensive comment.
*_"4 out of 5" is a bit harsh. I think you meant a "4½ out of 5" Blayne.....right?_*
"That guy we don't talk about"
Varg? Imagine being into black metal and being too afraid to say some guy's name, like he's Voldemort or something. Reddit moment.
Speed/Doomthrone > Blackthrone
"That guy we don't talk about."
Varg is still the standard-bearer for black metal, even when people don't want to use his name.
Eeeeeesh.
Mkay.
cowards don't talk about him.
I'd think if anyone could claim the title of "standard-bearer" for a genre, then they would have put out more than one or two records in their entire career that *didn't* sound like they were written by someone who likes to huff brake cleaner.
And Hopefully wasn't an absolute Piece of Racist Garbage.
Stand by your Albums, and Artists.
For Sure.
If that Artist, Album, Buddy, WHATEVER turns out to be a Suck Hole.
Fuck 'em. Adjust.
@@nachtjager109e You think wrong.
Darkthrone is one of those bands that are good but I just never got super into
Sleepy album.. maybe will work while drinking whiskey
Fishes don’t got good metals to listens too
Interesting album cover, really lacking musicianship I guess that's the point of black metal! Cool Sacrifice Tee though
First?
Second
Not getting any joy from that album cover I'll tell you that much.
just admit you hate fun
@@BloodyVulnona Yup. A guy walking over some ski tracks on a field is hilarious and I hate it.
Hes skating tho
This album is the fukn shit for some moody doom black thrash metal
Yawn. Not for me.
another lame review by Blane.. Everyone does the same thing... mentions the stuff that is not that great about an album... Then proceeds to give an 8 or a 9 Score (out of 10)...
if an album is boring... ITS BAD, thats it...
That other Guy?? Have some blls, The name of the legend you`re refering to is VARG VIKERNES.
Bruh
This album was so boring...
Glad I'm not the only one that feels that way.
Yeahh not really have cool riff.. just repetition of slower death metal riff..
@@zolamakhir8191 repetition of slower played death metal riffs? But these aren't death metal riffs in any matter
Dude I am a huge Darkthrone fan and I agree, listened to it many times but it just never gets any better.
Tedious, Boring uninspired this what Darkthrone has become. The cover makes it even worse.
Yeah, because recording another Norsecore album would have been sooooo creative...
Wow guys... that album sucks big time, i think Nocturno culto and fenriz would even agree with me on that, but what sucks more than the music is the cover hehe oh my... that is total c**p. 2/5 skulls, easy. Blayne please... you know im right, no need to blubber reasons for skulls (sorry, love you though!)
different strokes for different folks as they say. I have a hard timing imagining that Darkthrone would release something that they don't like.
Boring. They should call it quits.
Seriously.
You can just quit listening. That would solve your problem.
@@laveredasecreta most people should. It would help solve the problem of all this shit modern music!
@@laveredasecreta Okay fanboy.
If it didn't have the Darkthrone logo on it, nobody would care. Average album at best.
A big factor of them not wanting to play live is you wanting them to play live and they know it which is partly why they do not do it lmaooo
Classic Darkthrone haha.
I think its stage fright. Too much people u know
is that the scene from Merlin? 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Ok my top complaint is this please stop calling them a "band" when they are clearly a duo. A true band consists of at least three members! I just can't take these guys seriously 🤔
There's no definition of a "band". So the White Stripes were't a band either?
