I actually met Maniac outside a geek shop in Oslo last summer. Didn’t get to talk to him for very long, but he was a good guy. I told him that Chimera is the greatest Mayhem album, and he laughed happily as he was walking away. Such a chill dude for such devilish vocals 😁
1 - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas 2 - Grand Declaration Of War 3 - Chimera 4 - Ordo Ad Chao 5 - Daemon 6 - Esoteric Warfare 1 - Wolf's Lair Abyss (my fav EP of all time) 2 - Deathcrush 3 - Atavistic Black Disorder
I love De Mysteriis, but I get why you would hate Atllia’s vocals it took me awhile to get into his work on that album. If you haven’t already check out De Mysteriis Alive. I think Atillia sounds a hell of a lot better than on the studio album.
I had to listen to Ordo Ad Chao and Daemon to really appreciate Attila's vocals in DMDS. DMDS was probably the last album i got into from their discography (not including deathcrush), imo Attila is one of the most unique voices in black metal. My favorite aspects of his style is when he does the opera-like howls and despaired chants.
I disagree with you on DMDS (my favorite black metal album of all time) but I fully agree with you on Grand Declaration of War. Super underrated. Completion In The Science of Agony and In The Lies Where Upon You Lay are just pure gold, and A Time To Die is like a Necrophagist song. So fucking awesome.
The crazy thing is not a whole lot of people will praise this album for a lot of reasons because of the time change meaning the year of 2000 was a really weird year for black metal so but for sure this was probably my favorite mayhem on besides one with freezing moon, but overall grand declaration of war was such a great and underrated album
So far I’ve only heard their stuff up to Grand Declaration of War (including the EPs). I gotta check out the other stuff soon, I love me some weird extreme metal and straight-up black metal as well so I think I’ll probably dig most of their albums. Thanks for yet another great video 🤘🤘
It took me quite a bit to get acquainted with Attila's vocals, but even now that I have I still think they work better with Sunn O))) as the backdrop. The strange and somewhat operatic inflections I just feel are much more befitting with the universe-swallowing, black hole type atmosphere that their guitar droning creates.
I've always loved Attila on de mysterious and every other mayhen album but I've never liked any maniac albums I mean there good but the vocals put me off
My problem with de mysterium isn’t that the vocals sounds silly, it’s that they have no energy or oomph. Just imagine it with vocals more like darkthrone, it would be twice as good
I feel like more so than so many metal bands people have such a diverse array of intense feelings on Mayhem albums. I find it fascinating and I think its a good thing. They've always kept me guessing and interested and a fan since I was a teenager. Enjoyed your video and takes a lot!
I can agree for the most part on DMDS. The only semi-good vocals on that are on the title track imo, and that really holds it back from being one of my all-time favorites
There's no accounting for taste, agree or not :) What's interesting for me is when people reason their views, so this kind of video is usually more informative than the review which confirms my own biases or opinions.
Honestly i agree 100% with your opinion of De Mysteriis don Sathanas. Seriously the live bootlegs with Dead and Deathcrush were so much better. RIP Dead.
Yeah….. I’ll be honest I just do not like Mayhem at all. Give me Darkthrone, Gorgoroth, Bathory, Emperor, Satyricon and even Burzum any day of the week over Mayhem. Besides Grand Declaration of War everything else is below a 3/5 for me. That being said though Attila is an awesome vocalist and Tormentor Rules
Mayhem like many others were my first ever black metal band I heard. I remember hearing Death Crush a long time ago and thinking it was the most god awful thing I had ever heard. Then I remember hearing Atilla's vocals on de mysteriis and thought it was a joke. I couldn't ever take the band seriously for the longest time. Then someone told me to listen to Esoteric Warfare and that completely changed for me. Probably my favorite album by them along with Daemon. They just seemed to get better with age. Excited to see them live for the first time next weekend!
And holy f*ck I agree almost too much with the vocals on De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas being pretty garbage lmao. It sounds like Marge Simpson with rabies haha
Agree completely on the vocal performance on De Mysteriis. I had to restart the album three separate times because the moment the vocals came in I just started laughing.
I absolutely agree! I have a bootleg version with Dead on vocals. And a few instrumental tracks where there is no dead on vocals. Also Daemon is great too.
I think that I must be the only fan that actually enjoys Ordo Ad Chao 'cause every Mayhem discography ranking I've seen has it last. I agree with you 100% about Grand Declaration Of War however, but I think that Wolf's Lair Abyss should be talked about along side it considering it's basically Part I.
👏🏼 Bro! I was wondering if you had done a Mayhem album review… I know I’ve been out of the loop since my youngest was born back in March. Anyhow I like your honest ranking as always of each album here is mine even with the 5 point status: Studio Albums: 1. Grand Declaration of War - 5/5 2. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas - 3/5 ( Admittingly took a while for Atilla’s vocal approach to grow on me for that one, I love it more for the atmosphere ) 3. Daemon - 4/5 4. Chimera - 3.5/5 5. Esoteric Warfare - 3/5 6. Ordo ad Chao - 0/5 (sloppy, unforgettable, heard once now collecting dust somewhere in my collection… oh well!) I will give Deathcrush a 4.5/5 I love it and for its historic value in the genre. There ya go, I am in the realm of more quirky avant-garde black metal too, I like all other forms don’t get me wrong, but I like music that makes me think and gets me when I don’t expect it rather than repetitive stuff anymore. Cheers!
Tackling True Crime: The Band, I see...😏 I can understand your gripes about Attila's vocals on De Mysteriis. He's a... unique vocalist, to put it lightly. Grand Declaration of War is my favourite Mayhem album, too! I saw someone on RYM say that the album is Deathspell Omega before Deathspell Omega, and I can really hear it! The trip-hop song legitimately reminds me of Ghostmane's more metal and industrial-influenced stuff, but done 20 years earlier... Makes me wonder if he was inspired by that track as an artist, given that he's a huge black metal fan (he even name dropped Varg from Burzum in one track).
Yes! Grand declaration of war fuckin’ rules, was completely out of left-field at the time and I still dig it 20 years later. The remix was crappy tho I prefer the original mix
I don't HATE the vocals on DMDS, but i do prefer Dead on vocals in that period, and the live in liepzig stuff. Wierd too cuz Atilla is a fucking monster vocalist, i think he was trying to go for something unique. There ARE instrumental versions of the album available on UA-cam for anyone interested. Cheers.
I actually like Atilla for at least some of De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, specifically Freezing Moon and Pagan Fears, although I thought some of the lyrics in Funeral Fog were kinda sucky
I waited NINE DAYS to see what Hate you'd get for your opinions on this review. Because it was GUARANTEED at 1 minute in. And yeah, seems like everyone is Pretty chill about it. Mayhem Fans seem to keep it together better than Korn fans :p
8:00 What I will say about Atilla's vocals on De Don Mysteriis is that what sounds really dumb to me is that he's actually trying to sing with the black metal goblin voice, but he can't. The lower, constipated singing sounds so dumb and then he just assaults my ears whenever he raises his voice and sings some off-key higher note. No wonder most black metal vocalists don't try to shriek in key because I find it just antithetical to the music style and its purpose. It's like the rest of the band gave Atilla some strong vodka, sat his drunk ass on the toilet, and told him to sing to the instrumentals like Cronos while simultaneously trying to shit.
My list: 1: Ordo Ad Chao 2: Deathcrush 3: De Mysteriis 4: Grand Declaration 5/6/7: Sorry I just can't decide out of Chimera, Esoteric Warfare and Daemon haha. I enjoy all 3. Most people tend to disliked Ordo Ad Chao but personally it's the slowest and most atmospheric of the Mayhem albums and I prefer atmospheric black over regular black. Plus I love the high pitched screeches he does at parts of the album. I am someone who loves grindcore and noisecore and stuff like that and this album harkens to some of that sound but a lot clearer. This is still a hell of a lot clearer than Deathcrush lol. And as for De Mysteriis I do agree that his vocals are just kinda weird and not in a great way, I still love the album but I definitely feel it's very overrated. There are looaads of much better black metal albums from a lot of different bands.
1. De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas 2. Grand Declaration of War 3. Chimera 4. Ordo ad Chao 5. Esoteric Warfare 6. Daemon (still good, at least a 3.5/5) DMDS is one of my all time favorite black metal albums for its atmosphere and how fittingly spooky it gets, but Grand Declaration of War is fucking brilliant. At first I really didn't like it at all, but at a point it just clicked. A ballsy move by the band to go in this direction, but it results in one of the most criminally misunderstood and underrated albums in black metal. Ordo ad Chao is muddy, but I think it gives the album a truly hellish and dreary character, almost akin to a Portal album at points.
I understand wanting to avoid dawn of the black hearts/ Live in Sarpsborg, but I can't stress enough about how it was a gateway to the genre for a lot of us. No salt, just a bit of a bummer not to have it get a mention
100% with you on Grand Declaration of War. Edit: Also, De Mysteriis is my favourite Black Metal album of all time but I've heard other people having the same problem and I get it. Chimera and Deathcrush are phenomenal, AS IS Ordo Ad Chao :D Lost all interest in the band after Blasphemer left. Call me a fanboy. Wanna do a complete discography review for Septicflesh?
Interesting takes and a fun video as usual, my good man. Way too much to really say in a youtube comment, but I'll try for a few things. I'm willing to bet the BM fans won't be as salty as the Kornheads but we'll see. As someone who started listening to them just after De Mysteriis came out, I'll have to strongly disagree on your take about the vocals. In fact, a lot of the negativity you point toward Atilla here I'd be more inclined to level against Maniac. You're not wrong about Grand Declaration of War; it is a pretty cool album, especially in retrospect/after the passage of more than twenty years, but man, I just don't like Maniac much. haha I did interview Blasphemer around the time the album came out, and the subject of influences did come up. I don't remember everything he said at th e time and no longer have the recording of the interview, sadly, but one record he did mention had been an influence on him and his guitar-playing in particular was...Dimension hatross from Voivod. I thought that was pretty cool. While I know you weren't mostly talking about EPs, you did rightly discuss Deathcrush -- I think WOlf's Lair Abyss is an important recording in Mayhem's discography and really shouldn't be skipped, either. It's kind of the necessary bridge between DE mysteriis anD grand Declaration, which especially seems to come out of nowhere without the intervening EP. It's not one of my favourite mayhem recordings, but yea I think it's as important as Deathcrush in its own way. It was the proof that the band could survive post-Euronymous and still has a lot of influence on it, even though Blasphemer was the new guitarist at the time.
Probably a controversial opinion, but I think De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas would be much better as an instrumental album. I love the music itself but those vocals are painfully bad. I’d give anything to have someone better redo the vocals
Ordo ad Chao is "not a good record"?! 😮😂 Well, yeah... Instead of saying "Not my cup of tea" or "I didn't get it" you unapologetically state this as a fact.
Dude, I thought I was the only one that hates Attila's vocals on De Mysterris . It is so distracting and it's the only thing that prevents this album from being great for me. It kills the whole mood. And it's very unfortunate cause the music behind them is actually amazing. You are not alone on this one.
They have always been divisive and I don't remember a time when that wasn't the case. I personally love them, but yeah they probably sounded a bit funny to me at first, though it's honestly hard to remember that time now as it was almsot 25 (!) years ago for me. I think they are going for something qutie different than most "traditional" black metal vocals and I am 100% behind that. The performance is pretty spontaneous and I think you can sort of tell. Could it have been more intense or done with mroe takes? Yeah sure, but this album is the product of the people that made it in a certain time and place and mental space, and one is either with it or not, and that'sa ll there is to it.
Great vid man…and I’ll add a Hot Take on this myself, I respect the influence and impact this band has had on Black Metal, but I think this band (along with Burzum) are EXTREMELY overrated…if Dead hadn’t offed himself, DMDS would have been a much better album, it’s a shame too, because Attilla’s vocals on the Tormentor stuff are super awesome, and then there’s this stupid shit on DMDS…music and atmosphere are great, those vocals are fucking laughable…being huge fan of Black Metal, I say this with NO SHAME, after Live in Leipzig, I could give 2 shits, No Dead, No Bueno, for me at least…but I will check out Daemon per your suggestion…but honestly this is just one of the classic 2nd wave Black Metal bands I just don’t fucking care about…great vid man…keep up the killer content dude
@@Schlain666 Dude, Varg was in Mayhem and contributed to De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, not just with his bass playing. Also, he was arguably the pioneer of nationalistic and nazism in black metal, so he and neo-nazis are definitely relevant to Mayhem and black metal as a whole.
I actually met Maniac outside a geek shop in Oslo last summer. Didn’t get to talk to him for very long, but he was a good guy. I told him that Chimera is the greatest Mayhem album, and he laughed happily as he was walking away. Such a chill dude for such devilish vocals 😁
I love Atillas singing in DMDS. He made it sound gothic and unique.

1 - De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas

3. Daemon

Thank fucking lord lmao, I thought I was gonna get BUTCHERED for my thoughts on De Mysteriis, but so far so good.
De Mysteriis I enjoy instrumental wise. Vocal wise I have never liked it. He sounds like Gollum have a seizure while high overdosing on LSD
Wow 2.5 for dmds and 4.5 for grand declaration of war. What a mess.
Oh no, we disagree, how horrifying
Great vid man…and I’ll add a Hot Take on this myself, I respect the influence and impact this band has had on Black Metal, but I think this band (along with Burzum) are EXTREMELY overrated…if Dead hadn’t offed himself, DMDS would have been a much better album, it’s a shame too, because Attilla’s vocals on the Tormentor stuff are super awesome, and then there’s this stupid shit on DMDS…music and atmosphere are great, those vocals are fucking laughable…being huge fan of Black Metal, I say this with NO SHAME, after Live in Leipzig, I could give 2 shits, No Dead, No Bueno, for me at least…but I will check out Daemon per your suggestion…but honestly this is just one of the classic 2nd wave Black Metal bands I just don’t fucking care about…great vid man…keep up the killer content dude
de mysteriis dom sathanas is WAYY too low
Hot take:
De mysteriis Is mayhem's worst album
de mysteriis dom sathanas alive way better
The way you described the sound of these records confirmed all my prejudice towards black metal and reminded me why I don’t ever want to listen to it…
Quest for metal while be hate this viedeo 🤣 i don't care. Im not a Fan of Mayhem. I like Immortal, Emperor, Dark Funeral more.
Can u pls shorten your futur videos more?
Dude, Neonazis? What the hell, that has nothing to do with either the genre, this band or their first album. Please just stop.
Varg Vikernes was literally a neo-nazi, so thats just flat-out false. I will not stop.
@@themetalmeltdownofficial Yeah you can talk Burzum in another video.
@@c4gam1ng12 You should really get help with your delusions.
