In this version, chests alternate between wizards and items. So get as many chests as you can. You get the gold armour when you get an item whilst you are already wearing armour. To get the special weapon you need to get an item whilst wearing the gold armour.
I always loved this version on Genesis. The music and sound effects worked so well. I wanted a Genesis just for this game.
"That fucking thing barfs on you!?" Hilarious. I was waiting for it.
The Nintendo Switch can perform an estimated 393 GFLOP/s so not even half a TFLOP.
Floating point operations per second or FLOP/s is a measuring unit of calculation power of any computer system, PCs and smart phones included so not just for consoles. The normal type of floating point operation measured for gaming systems since it is the only one really useful for gaming graphics is FP32 (full precision floating point at 32-bit).
The very reason why a powerful PC is considerably more powerful than any console when it comes to 3D based graphics is mainly due to a combination of having a large video memory that has a very large bandwidth coupled with the large amount of FLOP/s that the graphics processor is capable of.
Memory and memory bandwidth aside Switch is capable of around 0.4 teraflop per second or TFLOP/s for short (in docked mode), PS4 around 1.8 TFLOP/s, PS4 Pro 4.2 TFLOP/s and lastly the king of consoles as far as FLOPs are concerned the Xbox one X around 6 TFLOP/s.
A high end yet still not top of the line PC with say a Geforce 1080 for graphics will do around 10.5 TFLOP/s overclocked.
Some people state that Switch is capable of around one TFLOP/s. This is not true as far as games are concerned since this is measured with a Tegra X1 (the Switch GPU uses a version of this graphics processor) running at around one GHz while performing half precision 16-bit FLOP. The Switch’s version needs to perform full precision FP32 calculations for games which cuts the number in half compared to half precision calculations. Add to that that the Switch’s version only runs at 768 MHz and the number gets even lower.
The Capcom collection for Original XBOX, PS2, or PSP have the arcade versions of Ghosts n Goblins & Ghouls n Ghosts, as well as an emulated version of Super Ghouls n Ghosts :

One of my favorites on the Genesis, I've beat this several times
Same
24:16 that's one of the bosses from Kirbys dream land!
Prepare to scream at your tv
I love hitting the end of a J&M Monday like the one for this, which ends in ignominious defeat for our heroes, then finding in the rec list Mike defeating the game later on. Vindication, at last. Playing along is fun too, this is a hard freaking game. The tips and example really helps.
Loki = Low Kai in Mike language.
Hey, Mike! Didn't know you were streaming this on Twitch so I completely missed out. I wish I was there when you were streaming because I would've helped you out with the parts you were struggling on. I played this game countless times when I was younger and it's not that hard once you know your way through.
I know this was your first time playing it, so I understand your frustration. The Torch weapon is very useful in certain areas. You just happened to get it in places where it's really not well suited and you chose to head to the boss checkpoint with it instead of dying to get a better suited weapon. The giant worm boss (and that part of the stage) is actually one of the best times to have the Torch. The fire will go through the floor and hit those circle things. You don't even need to jump. In other cases, yeah, you don't want it. That must have been Torch-ure for you, especially because you were using them during the second run, which has stronger enemies! BTW, I think the Axe power explosion is useful in killing those annoying flying guys. Charge the weapon and bait them into flying into you, then watch them get hit with the explosion!
So you basically get armor every second chest. Usually, the first chest is the Magician and the second chest is armor. You found out that jumping around certain area will spawn chests. Sometimes you got the Magician when you thought it'd be armor. It's because the chest you opened was actually the first one that appeared during that life. You wanna wait til you see a second chest. Avoiding to get hit is one of the key factors in getting through the stages quick. If you get hit, you're forced to find regular armor, then gold armor. If you have the gold armor on, every chest afterward is a weapon, but I think sometimes could be a Magician. This is the other key factor in getting through the game fast. You want to not get hit, get the gold armor, then just hold on to a weapon you like. In your second run, you can get the Goddess weapon (Psycho Cannon) as early as the first stage. It's so powerful it can absorb some projectiles like it did when you used it against those cyclops head things. I actually choose to replace it with the Torch sometimes when I get to that worm boss because it's easier for me. You can get the Goddess weapon back anytime as long as you still have the gold armor and open a chest.
Sorry for the long comment, but I hope this helps you out the next time you ever get to play this again! Trust me, once you learn the patterns, you will breeze right through the game. I was terrible at this when I was a kid, but I can finish the game in no time at all now. Suffice to say, this is the only Ghosts N Goblins game I've played all the way through and I found it to be really easy once I learned how to get by. Maybe it's because you can attack up and down?
Best answer. Super nice
Well done! I think I counted about 156 deaths and 52 credits used. Next time, if there is a next time, you should aim to halve that.
Flops are a computing term, works for consoles because consoles are essentially simplified computers themselves. It stands for Floating point Operations Per Second, tera denotes a trillion. so 1 teraflop means the computing device can handle 1 trillion floating point operations every second.
There is a pattern to the chests I forget what it is now, but it’s something like weapon, wizard, wizard, armour and you can make the gold armour appear after that. It’s the same in super ghouls n ghosts on the snes, James and Mike made that game very hard work for them selves in their run a while back, because they were so scared of losing the knife they wouldn’t hit chests and hardly ever had the gold armour for the charge up weapon.
I think in Super Ghouls and ghost iirc, the first pattern is, weapon, green armour, gold armour, moon shield then wizard. But if you get hit at any time the next will be wizard, wizard, then the armour but havent played in a long time. Fun to see this stuff again!!!
as much as mike plays these games too. cmon broooooooO. jump around more, trigger those chests. even beginning of levels.
I knew the broken bridge part would be entertaining. I beat this as a kid.
I got to play this at a New York barcade last year during a college trip. The Sega Genesis version was my first exposure to the franchise back when I was six or seven years old. Managed to get up to the cave level before we had to take off. My professor was impressed and was like “that’s dedication” after I beat the second boss. Could’ve beat the whole thing if we had more time. Still an awesome experience.
There was a Sega Master System version too
The Genesis version was almost a clone of the arcade.
indeed, because it is the port of the arcade game of the same title. the snes game was a different game of its own. many western players confuse it being the same game on a separate console which it is not. graphicswize, the best port of ghouls n ghosts is the pc-engine super graphics version, which did not get localized outside of japan.
This is probably the most faithful Genesis port of an Arcade game
"Modern Games or retro games?" Mike, I love both. However, I think, imo, you would love Spelunky HD (the sequel is coming next year too!) It's a great platforming roguelite, rng level layouts, event spawns, and just a kick in the ass.
I've heard about it before but haven't tried that one. Too many games, too little time! Thanks for watching
Thanks for replying! Maybe you can get around to it sometime. It has become a favorite around here. Thanks for the streams! Even if I can’t always make it, at least I can watch the archive.
@@Cinemassacre I second playing Spelunky. It's really difficult, but it's addictive and you keep wanting to play more. It's a rogue like, so every time you start a new play through the level layouts are different, it's procedurally generated. And deaths are final, you get one life every time, but that's part of the appeal, so that gradually you get further and further into the game as your skills improve
Responding late, but no interest in modern games here. Even The Messenger. Something about the graphics - too wide and too much on the screen (not a retro look), too polished and detailed at a pixel level. I didn't care for the look of it. It looks modern indie retro, if that makes any sense.
It's funny because the blue flame is the best weapon for the maggot boss
I use to play the hell out of the arcade version on holiday to Cyprus in the mid to late 80's on one of the old table arcades, the sort "Space Invaders style " of games were normally played on.
Mike Matei I don't mind you playing modern games at all. However, I most definitely prefer the retro.
a sword is a big knife. a knife is a small sword.
I played the Commodore 64 versions of both games growing up, horrible visuals but fantastic music for their time. Same goes to Golden Axe on C64.
music s great on c64
1. I noticed you get a checkpoint whenever the Timer increases how much time you have left. I thought that was a nice touch.
2. Capcom's name isn't on the box most likely due to Nintendo's policies towards 3rd parties. If I recall correctly, Capcom simply licensed the game out to Sega for them to reprogram for the Sega Genesis themselves - so this is like a weird case of it being a 2nd party game, instead of a 3rd party game.
3. This game really needs a Rondo of Blood style system for subweapons - giving you a brief moment to reclaim the last one you got. Or even better, I'd prefer something like the Thunder Force games or Contra: Hard Corps where you can pick what weapon you want at any time.
Oh how I feel your frustration.
Sega always had way cooler covers than Nintendo
Original Ghosts N Goblins Arcade available on Capcom Arcade Cabinet PS3/360
Mike is a gangsta 2019
He said munky fuck!! This city is fucked
I actually often prefer Mike playing modern games that he really enjoys, like Spider-Man, because those streams are more calm and consist of more happy exploring than skill-related torture. But I like the mix. I could listen to Mike playing any old Castlevania game 24/7. The fact that Mike just plays WHAT HE WANTS is very inspirational in this day and age! His knowledge of both new and old game mechanics makes his opinions convincing and relatable to everyone.
Still looking forward to Shadowgate!!
Game room tour %!
I keep thinking "Why don't you double jump?" Like it's the SNES version
Mike, have you played Maldita Castilla Ex?
Also, check out Sigi: A Fart For Melusina... It's easy but, a fun little throwback.
Maldita Castilla is free on PC and a ton of fun. not quite "NES hard" but fun throwback nonetheless.
Watching you play this is torture
He probably could've chopped his play time in half if he just stfu and played the game.
Best version of this gane was on the Genesis. Man this was a hard game. I would get so mad at this that i actually played phantasy star and got into rpgs because i couldnt stand this anymore lol😂
Sega Saturn has a compilation of the first 2 arcades + the snes one called Capcom Generations 2. Japan release only. Think it was on PS1 as well.
Hi Mike,
Have you played Alisia Dragoon?? Really good genesis game.
Also Mickey & Donald's World of Illusion!
Cool. Both of them??
Ever tried Magician Lord? If I had to compare it to anything else, I'd say it's like the NeoGeo's answer to Ghouls 'n Ghosts
As long as you have standard armor you can receive super armor at 47:00
You should do a playthrough of Black Tiger (Arcade). Probably my favorite arcade game that never had a home port.
It had computer ports. But thankfully the arcade version can be gotten on Capcom Classics Collection Vol. 2 for PS2/Xbox and Capcom Arcade Cabinet for PS3/360.
the graphics aren't quite as good as the SNES version but honestly I like the music and gameplay of this one better..it just looks more fun...I've never been a huge fan of the SNES anyways...more of a fan of the NES
this game is legit hard cause controls are good... the SNES one looks more elaborated but the Knight is stiffy and slow to react
Honestly I like Ghouls 'n Ghosts on Genesis more then Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts on SNES but there both great games. If you enjoy a challenge these game just dam hard
Great port
Super GnG has a patch that removes almost all slow down, and it runs on genuine hardware. The problem is with Capcom's programming, not SNES itself.
This version looks great, although enfuriatingly hard. I like that you have a sword, am I wrong or is it the only version that has it?
Stabbing magnets!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤯🤯🤯
2 games I'd like to see if you can beat for Genesis. Shadow of the Beast and Aero the Acrobat. Fuck both those games lol.
graphics look great
I always thought that cover was pretty cool.
Ima start the hair pulling now just to get ahead lol
mikegot the golden axe lol
wow this game is just as hard as ninja gaiden and ghosts n goblins
I have this on ps2 capcom collection vol. 2 or maybe it's vol.1... good collection series though
It's the arcade version in that one. They botched Ghouls n Ghosts a little there though, the background layer is too dark. It does have a little cheat code that let's you choose any weapon on the fly, very useful.
Flops = floating points per second, a unit to measure calculation power of CPUs and GPUs. GPUs are usually measured in Teraflops. So no, it is not just console related thing.
Ghosts N Goblins - The Flame Sucks. Get the knife!
Ghouls N Ghosts - The Flame Sucks. Get the knife!
Super Ghouls N Ghosts - The Flame fucking sucks! Get the fucking knife!!
The game developers know the flame sucks and programmed the game to force it on you at every opportunity
No, James and Mike play games together every Monday. Many more Mondays, many more games. Every fuckin' Monday.
Easiest final boss of the hardest game ever
"For what seems like to be." I like that.
Sucks to not have the double jump
This one of the few games I completely said fuck it and gave up on
STEP 1. Get the knife. STEP 2. Get The Knife STEP 3. GET THE KNIFE!
Hey Mike, we found that it is not really a "never really know" situation while offing the wizard that hurls the stars of David at you that turn you into an old man or duck-- rather it is an "every other" thing. So one time you kill him is results in a curse, the next will follow an aid to your battle typically in the form of armor, the next a curse and so on...
and yes, you must complete the game twice to beat it.
You should play decap attack for the genesis 😎
Now you have to beat the super Nintendo version.
they beat it on Beginner in 2015 or so
I remember this game being super hard. I never owned it but my buddy did.
Own it, can honestly say I’ve never played it. But that’s about to change
Hard as nails
(Uses weapon to defeat enemy hindering him)
"So far I don't want this weapon."
Goddamn Mike, how can you be so awful at games and beat so many impossible games? Love it! Keep streaming and never reading the instructions, man!
I beat it on Practice difficulty! Why didn't I get the real ending?!
Fuckin' love you, Mike.
piss
Mike, if you play Janga we will all watch. I promise you lol
1:48:00 if you had "anything else" youd still be button mashing and getting lucky. youre not strategizing.
mike you always know what chest is next, there is a pattern. I learned it in super ghosts and goblins. if you have your grey armour then you get new items, jesters appeared on an interval pattern. jump everywhere to uncover chests. super ghosts and goblins is my fave with the weapon power ups!
40:30 i depends on the game tbh. Both games modern and retro.
you can know if it is something good or not in the chests. I noticed this when you and James were playing the super version. It depends on what armor you have when you open the chest. Let's say if you lose armor and open a chest that was to contain armor then the magician appears as a punishment. If you get to the chest and you haven't lost your armor then you get upgrade armor. Notice how many magicians you get when you have no armor vs when you have armor. I hope that makes sense
Not sure if it was covered but you can play the arcade versions of these games on the capcom arcade collections for ps2/xbox.
Dark Souls 1.0
I wasn't too into the early gauntlet games. they felt too repetitive. So it was something that I only played when I had some friends to play with. Playing it in a group made it more fun. But I LOVED when Gauntlet Legends came out. And then Dreamcast had the true to arcade port of it. I played that game to pieces. I beat it with every character. But The Jester was my favorite. I liked his bombs.
This is making me want to play my snes classic
The game is really hard and you have to beat it
I liked the port of the arcade Ghosts N Goblins on SuperGrafx, the vaguely more powerful version of the TG16, It really was only different in that it had a little more memory and slightly better graphics card. And the game cards had more memory so the games could be larger. For example the Rtype port on tg16 is only half the arcade game, but the one on super graphics is the whole thing. So the port on supergrafx was pretty good. It was really close to the arcade.
Holy crap I absolutely hated the 3rd level, especially the moving platform part. Died there many, many times.
Totally. I usually loose a life there, which is bad there is like a total of six for two playthroughs.
You should play the sequel called Black Tiger. It was the first arcade game I played a lot of back in 1988 at the age of 8.
Does this guy even know you can do a super powerful charge shot once you have gold armour!?
He does that a lot! Did you watch the video?
Mauricio E. Oops!, i must have skipped those bits.
It's hard to believe that this is actually the easiest game in the series!
Great game this, also that tmnt animation was amazing Mike!, well done.
Ive noticed that the dagger is the best weapon in all of the games
Good work Mike.
2:15:15 hhhhmm nooooo LoL
That marquee is amazing!
I didn’t know this had a genesis port I don’t think I ever beat ghosts and goblins
Super Ghouls and ghosts on snes i played the hell out of that game with my cousin when we. Were younger remember finally beating it because you had to go all the way back and beat it again with the bracelets was the ultimate badge of honor
Super freaking hard but such a great world and characters the sprites are really awesome we were into this an act raiser allot at the time
At its time this was a very faithful port of the game and advertised like wise. You can't really fault that.
They could have done more, but at this time Sega cut costs using small maskroms. This game for instance is less than a 1 megabyte.
This is the ugliest sega game I have ever seem, is that why?
um.... its low key not low kai
Air is free... CO2 tax.
It's not pronounced Loke Eye, it's pronounced NESSSS, lol.
Mike you want a challenge? Play Demon's Crest... I never beat that game cuz of its difficulty
Stop blaming the weapons, they all have their strengths. The axe is nice because of its large hit box, but it's one hit Weaker, the knife is faster but only goes in a pencil straight line and is slightly stronger, but the hit box is smaller. They usually put the weapons out as you will need them.
Hey Mike, have you ever played Maximo or it's sequel on PS2? Spiritual successor to Ghouls and Ghosts (or Ghosts and Goblins), but in 3D. It was really fun, and had the same difficulty, just not as frustrating.
He should definitely play those games.
I remember liking the C64 of this game too... good for C64 at least
You should stream live in youtube too.
